Gov Nwifuru presents Ebonyi 2025 budget today

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State says the 2025 Appropriation Bill of over N391 billion is ready for presentation to the State House of Assembly on Thursday, November 28.

Nwifuru said this at the Citizen’s Budget Participation/Inputs forum held on Tuesday in Abakaliki.

He said that there was a need to improve the state’s revenue generation and that his administration was committed to his “people’s chatter of need agenda”.

The governor said he would focus on economic development and sustainability in the next fiscal year.

“What we should be working towards is what to do to improve the state’s revenue generation. Budget is simply a plan for the future.

“We must continue to work hard to set up industries and improve the economy. My administration has plan to set up vocational industrial centre in the state,” Nwifuru said.

Why I suspended Ebonyi health commissioner – Gov Nwifuru

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has said that he suspended the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, for three months because he did not show capacity to manage the ministry.

Nwifuru said this on Wednesday in Abakaliki, while addressing stakeholders from different sectors during the citizens’ engagement forum for the 2025 budget proposal.

He said that the health ministry “is sick, despite having an abundance of qualified personnel.

“When one is in a position of authority, such a person should know that it comes with lots of responsibilities.

“People in authority should not be lackadaisical in their approach to work and should deliver on their mandates,” he said.

He regretted that the government had invested heavily in the health sector but there was little to show for such efforts.

“One contractor collected N3 billion to supply equipment and consumables to primary healthcare centres in the state.

“The government also spends billions of naira to bring primary healthcare centres and general hospitals in the state to standard but there are no results,” the governor said.

He also said that the government would constitute committees to inspect health facilities across the state.

“We have made several interventions, such as drug revolving funds for general hospitals and this has attained 60 per cent delivery.

“We are equipping the health facilities so that when people fall sick in the rural areas, they would receive immediate treatment before being referred to specialist hospitals,” he said.

Nwifuru said that when the health facilities are fully rehabilitated, they would be run independently by the health officials to make them viable.

“The doctors would generate funds to pay themselves and other health workers and generate revenue for the government.

“The same will apply to the state broadcasting service, which will be run as a public liability company.

“The funds the establishment generates would be used to run it and redundant staff would be redeployed to relevant ministries,” the governor said.

He warned commissioners and other public office holders to take their duties seriously, adding that more would be sanctioned for inefficiency.

“They have been given opportunities to realise that they have responsibilities.

“We have spent one year and some months in office and anyone that is joking should do so in his or her house,” he said.

Some of the stakeholders, who spoke at the forum, commended the governor for his “inclusive style of governance” and pledged their continued support to his administration.

“The governor probed further and discovered that patients’ data registers, cards and other documents were being moved into the vehicle. He also discovered that all the documents had been sold without government approval,” Uzor said.

The governor, according to him, described the action as sabotage of  government’s efforts at repositioning the health sector.

“You are selling government documents without approval on a Saturday afternoon. The state’s hospitals in the rural areas are in need of registers data entry forms and hospital cards. Unfortunately, you are selling the ones produced by the government,” he said.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi capital on Monday, nullified the recent ward, council and state congresses of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the second defendant in the suit from recognising any of the officers purportedly elected from the nullified congresses.

Recall that some stakeholders of the party had on Nov. 2 conducted a congress and elected Mr Peter Nwele, as the new Chairman of the party in the state.

The Presiding Judge, Justice  Hilary Oshomah, in his ruling, said the Congresses did not follow democratic procedures of the party.

“The congress of the PDP in the state is nullified, unconstitutional and of no effect whatsoever,” the Judge stated.

Mr Mudi Erhenede, the lead counsel for the Plaintiffs commended the judgement.

“Our clients went to the court because they were not allowed to have access to the nomination forms.

He said while the case was still pending, PDP went ahead and conducted the congress.

“So, the court has ruled in our favour. The congress did not follow the democratic processes of the party. It is a law that all parties should be allowed to have access to the form,” he explained.

Ebonyi gas explosion claims 2 lives

Prof. Robinson Onoh, Chief Medical Director of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FETHA), Abakaliki, has disclosed that the recent gas explosion in Ebonyi claimed two lives.

The incident occurred in Orokeonuoha community, Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state on Oct. 17 at a catering school known as “Good Shepherd Catering School.”

Recall that no fewer than 10 girls undergoing training in the school were initially hospitalised at AE-FETHA. Onoh, who spoke with NAN on Sunday, said two among the 10 burnt students of the school had died from injuries sustained in the gas explosion.

The chief medical director said that medical personnel had been on ground to ensure no death was recorded again.

“Both nurses, plastic surgeons, anesthetist team, internal medicine and respiratory team and management are on ground to do the needful. We lost two already; one on arrival and yesterday, Oct. 19, we lost another, making it two deaths. Our team is on ground to make sure we do not lose another person,” he said.

Onoh revealed that inhalation and saver dressing foam were the major challenges.

“Inhalation is as a result of accumulation of smoke from burns;  it is part of the burns affecting their breathing; we have been able to separate them. The saver dressing foam reduces frequency of dressing and healing process faster.

“The inhalation is a big challenge; burns can be managed but once there is an inhalational component, it becomes a problem. Saver dressing foam is quite expensive; it is not available here; we had to get this from Enugu State.

“We hope to get more; we do not want to use a particular one which could cause infection, pains and affect healing. We need help because it is demanding on the hospital, using internal infusion and drugs.”

The medical expert called on state government, led by Gov Francis Nwifuru to assist the hospital to ensure medical care of the patients.

“We are also calling on Wife of the governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, to support and also medical organisations, philanthropists to help,” he said.

Onoh further applauded the management, reverend  sisters and priests in the catering school for their level of concern in providing care.

Mr Augustine Nwokoku, a victim’s father and staff of the state House of Assembly, appreciated the medical team and management of the school on team work to ensure the hospitalised students were taken care of.
