Heavy flooding has wreaked havoc in Azuoto, Okpuitumo Community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi, destroying many farmlands and people’s property, worth millions of Naira.

A victim, Mrs Chinyere Nworie, told newsmen in Abakiliki on Friday that her rice, yam and cassava farms were submerged by flood. Nworie said the incident had become a perennial experience in the area due to the nearness of Azuoto and Ebony River, linking the River Niger.

She further said that no fewer than 96 households in the area were affected by the disaster.

She said, “This flood happened on Saturday, following Friday’s heavy downpour. Our farms have been taken over by the rain flood. Our community has always suffered flooding every year, especially whenever it rained heavily and water overflows the Ebonyi River bank”.

Also, another resident, Mr Amauche Agbo, described the incident as “unfortunate”. The victims appealed to government at all levels to come to their aid with relief materials to cushion the effect of the disaster on them.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Uche Oba, said the agency had commenced assessment in the affected communities.

Oba said the incident had been a worrisome phenomenon to the State Government.

Why we did not participate in Ebonyi LG election – PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has opened up on why the party did not participate in the Saturday local government election conducted in the State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mr Steve Oruruo, PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman in Ebonyi blamed the development to leadership crisis in the party.

Mr Oruruo speaking in Abakaliki stressed that the Ebonyi PDP was not happy with the situation where elections were held in the 171 wards of the 13 councils of the State and the party did not participate.

Oruruo said that he and his executive were working assiduously to bring the party back to life in Ebonyi, urging members to be more united.

“Actually, we are not happy for not fielding a candidate. Of course, you must build your house first before you will be able to nominate candidates for elections.

“It’s true that our party is facing a lot of challenges, ranging from leadership crisis and all that. I encourage our members to be focused in oneness.

“Right now, we are building a strong platform to ensure that our party is stronger and united for a better Ebonyi and Nigeria at large.

“It is not good having one party system in Ebonyi and that’s not good for democracy,” Oruruo added.

Major opposition parties in the state, including the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party, PDP among others could not field candidates for the elections.

Dr James Igwe, political analyst, alleged that the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) did not give a level playing ground for other parties to participate.

Igwe urged EBSIEC to support democratic development and ensure that they conducted an acceptable elections for the people.

The councils monitored by the police boss are: Abakaliki, Izzi and Ebonyi LGAs, where she expressed satisfaction with the orderly distribution of electoral materials.

The Commissioner said though voter turnout was low, but expressed happiness over the security situation during the polls.

“Yes, the elections went on smoothly, though voter turnout was low. The conduct has no adverse report.

“I appreciate Ebonyi people for the orderly and peaceful conduct of the elections,” she added.

Downpour, apathy, late arrival of materials mar Ebonyi LG election

A downpour, which lingered from July 19 disrupted the commencement of the Local Government Area elections in Ebonyi State on Saturday.

A correspondent, who monitored the situation around Abakaliki and surrounding areas, reports that people were still inside their houses as of 9 am due to the downpour.

There were no voters in many polling units visited while officials of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) and security agents were scarcely seen.

The rain continued unabated in the early hours of Saturday in most parts of the State and had been heavy as at the time of this report.

A Resident of Abakaliki, Mr Justus Okafor, told NAN that there was no need defying the rains to vote in an “already concluded elections”.

“The election is all about the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) so why should I expose myself to unfavourable weather conditions to come out early.

“I might still come out to vote but definitely not under this rain,” he said.

An Electoral Officer who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the elections would go on as planned with or without the downpour.

“We are set for the elections and hope for a massive turnout as the day progresses.

“Our job is to conduct the election while the politicians bother on who controls the electorate,” he said.

Mrs Stella Okeh, an Election Observer, urged voters to come out en masse and cast their votes to ensure a credible process.

“The notion that the ruling party will dictate proceedings at the election should be corrected because other parties are equally participating.

“The massive defection of opposition members into the APC does not mean that those parties no  longer have members,” she said.

About six political parties are contesting for the chairmanship and councillors positions in the 13 council areas of the State.

Ebonyi LGA election witnesses low turnout, late arrival of materials

It was further observed that the local government election in Ebonyi suffered voters’ apathy and boycott by opposition parties as only the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) presented candidates for the exercise.

The election was held in the 171 wards of the 13 councils of the State on Saturday.

People came out in trickles to vote while election materials and officers of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) arrived late to many polling units.

The electorates, who spoke with NAN attributed the apathy to the non-fielding of candidates by the opposition parties.

In most units, the electoral officers and materials arrived late as accreditation and voting commenced simultaneously at 10:40 a.m.

There was low voter turnout in Oroke Onuoha Community Primary School polling unit, Oroke Onuha Playground unit, Ebonyi Local Government as well as at the Stadium polling unit 003 in Abakaliki local government area.

In some areas in Abakaliki metropolis, people were seen going about their businesses, though there was restriction of human and vehicular movements.

An electorate, Mr Chigozie Nwafor, said the low turnout was due to non-feilding of candidates by opposition parties.

“You can see, it is only the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that are in for the elections and no other parties,” Nwafor said.

Another resident and politician, Onyeka Nworie, alleged that the EBSIEC did not give political parties a level playing ground to participate in the elections.

According to Nworie, only the APC, the ruling party in the state, was participating in the elections.

“PDP, Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are nowhere to be found,” he said.

Also in Polling unit 003, Edukwu Oferekpe in Izzi local government area electoral officers and materials arrived late.

Ms Lucy Nwogbaga, Returning Officer at the Edukwu Oferekpe Unit, said that the voting could not start early due to the early morning rain.

“There were also delays from the collation centre. We could not move and go to the polling on time,” she added.

On voter turnout, Nwogbaga expressed hope that the electorates would come out to vote and noted that the processes had been smooth.

Mr Chukwu Eze also attributed the low turnout to the early morning rain in the state.

APC expects more women interest in Ebonyi LG polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi says it is expecting more women to indicate interest in contesting the upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) elections in the state.

The State APC Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, said this on Wednesday in Abakaliki while reacting to the seeming low number of women who obtained the party’s nomination form for the election.

“We have offered the expression of interest form freely to them among other measures as forms of encouragement.

“Any woman who then obtains the expression of interest and nomination forms is courageous and should be applauded,” he said.
