3 dead, many injured as gunmen attack Ebonyi church

The Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Nworie, has condemned the killing on Christmas eve of three worshippers by suspected hoodlums during a Christmas vigil mass on Sunday night.

Nworie disclosed this at Monday’s Christmas service at Saint Theresa Cathedral Church, saying that the killing occured at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Nkweagu, in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi state at 11.30 pm on Sunday.

The Bishop described the incident as sad, disheartening and prayed for the repose of their souls.

He explained that the suspected killers invaded the church while a priest was celebrating vigil mass service, killed and injured many others.

According to Nworie, such unfortunate act had never happened in Church in the state.

“This is the first time such an incident is happening in the Church and in Ebonyi state in general,” the Bishop noted.

Earlier, the clergy in his sermon, encouraged people to align themselves with the significant and teaching of the Christmas.

He urged the faithful to pray for unity and progress of the state and nation.

All efforts to get reaction from Ebonyi Police Command were fruitless as the command is yet to have a new Spokesperson.

Nwifuru made the announcement on Thursday, during a Maiden Edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) of the Wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu.

“I have seen that the contribution I made earlier to the workers as Government was not sufficient, that’s why I have decided to take a bold step; it is very hard but I have to do it.

“The workers of the state must live like others in this Christmas period,” the governor added.

In a message to the event, the Wife of the President, Tinubu said that the Governing Board of RHIESS, had approved N950 million to support no fewer than 250 vulnerable elderly citizens in the country.

They include: veterans from the Defence and Police and officers wives association.

“This is to cushion the effect of the economic situation and to alleviate the burden of our esteemed elders during this festive period,” Oluremi said.

She urged the senior citizens to embrace life to the fullest, prioritse their health, nurture their minds and strengthen with God as key to a rich fulfilling life.

Ebonyi to return mission schools to owners

Ebonyi will return all mission schools to their original owners by December, Gov. Francis Nwifuru promised in Abakaliki on Sunday.

Nwifuru made the promise during a pastoral visit to him by Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, Most Rev. Peter Nworie.

The governor acknowledged that the Catholic Church and others were tactical in improving quality of education in the state.

He directed the Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to begin the process of the return of the schools to the Missions.

“We are badly challenged in the area of education.

“We have agreed at a cabinet meeting to send 100 First Class and 2nd Class Upper Division graduates to countries of their choice to further their education.

“We will also sponsor 300 persons to study for their Masters degrees in Nigeria’s institutions of higher learning of their choice.

“We won’t hesitate if the Catholic Church or other Missions are ready to take back their schools that were taken over  by government,’’ the governor said.

He earlier commended the bishop for the visit and for blessing the congregation of the Government House chapel.

Nwifuru assured of his readiness to carry churches along in his administration.

Earlier, Most Rev. Nworie said the Church was ready to work with government to enhance teaching and learning in Ebonyi.

“Those schools were forcefully taken away from us after the civil war. The governor knows our feelings about this,’’ he said.

The cleric also expressed readiness of the Church under his leadership to support the governor to achieve his goals for the state.

He appreciated Nwifuru for the positive steps so far taken by his administration.

He also called on cabinet members of government to give their full support to the governor.

“If there is failure in your area there is a failure in the whole government because the success of any member of the cabinet is the success of the governor and that of the whole government.

“Today’s reading is an invitation for all members of the current government to assist the governor to achieve his goals for the state,’’ Nworie noted.

Echeazu, who was represented by an official of the agency, Mr Nnayelugo Ezeani, said the donation was not a compensation and replacement for their huge losses but encouragement, support from the federal government to assist them.

She said that there was need for early campaign, continuous sensitisation, meetings and collaboration among community leaders to prevent and address the menace of flood.

“In June 2023, NEMA and the state agency came for assessment as to ascertain the level of damage which affected buildings, household items, farmlands, economic trees among others.

  • Baptising Umahi in Abuja after refusing to learn in Ebonyi – By Owei Lakemfa

Baptising Umahi in Abuja after refusing to learn in Ebonyi – By Owei Lakemfa

IT was a short honeymoon. I expected it to be so. The Minister of Works, Senator David ‘Dave’ Nweze Umahi, was just 38 days in office when the staff of the Ministry publicly demanded his removal.

Hundreds of workers at the Ministry’s gates on Thursday, September 28, 2023 shouted “Umahi must go!”as they protested his perceived dictatorial tendencies.

Minister Umahi had that morning, as a disciplinary measure, instructed that the gates of the Ministry be shut against workers he claimed came late. After some hours, he directed that the gates be opened. He might have expected the staff to be grateful. Rather, the workers in retaliation locked the Minister in. They accused him of high-handedness, bringing in consultants to do civil service jobs, refusing to meet the unions and violating the Public Service Rules by locking out workers.

First, the Minister’s action is illegal. Section 18(1) of the Trade Disputes Act states that: “An employer shall not declare or take part in a lock-out…”

Secondly, no law or rule in the country empowers a minister to directly carry out disciplinary actions against a civil servant. Thirdly, the Public Service Rules which governs the workers has no provision for collective discipline of staff when they might not have been guilty of the same offence or in the same degree.

Fourthly, the offence for which Umahi purported to be punishing the workers is classified as ‘Misconduct’ under Section 3 of the Public Service Rules. According to that section: “Misconduct is defined as a specific act of wrong-doing or an improper behaviour which is inimical to the image of the service and which can be investigated and proved.” Umahi had neither investigated nor shown any proof that the workers were guilty of misconduct.

In fact, the rule states on lateness that the civil servant can be queried for “habitual lateness to work” not for a one-off lateness. In which case, the affected staff would have been a habitual late comer, would be issued verbal, and later written query. The Rule says: “The query should be precise and to the point. It must relate to the circumstances of the offence, the rule and regulation which the officer has broken and the likely penalty.” The officer must be given the right to respond to the query, and if his response is found to be unsatisfactory, then disciplinary action is contemplated. Even at that, the officer to be disciplined by a Ministry has the right to appeal to the Federal Civil Service Commission.

When Umahi realised that the matter was getting out of hand, he sent messages that the workers representatives should come up to his office. They refused, saying if he wanted to talk, he should come down to address them at the barricaded entrance.

After a cumulative five-hour stand-off and Minister Umahi could not leave to attend to other matters, including receiving a visitor said to be a serving governor, the Minister obliged. He went down and called for a truce.

What the workers in the Ministry have done is to insist that their Minister, or indeed, any minister for that matter, should respect the rules and respect the staff in as much as they are also obliged to respect him.

When Umahi was appointed Works Minister, I knew that if he had not repented his ways, he would soon clash with the staff.

In the first paragraph of my October 11, 2022 column titled, ‘Umahi: Impunity, falsehood and denials as governance.’ I had written that he “reminds me of the colonial District Officer who was a law unto himself. I know Abakaliki, the state capital was a major centre for slave trade four centuries ago, but Umahi governs the state as if it were still a slave colony where people have no rights.”

The column was based on the  strange behaviour of Umahi as Governor of Ebonyi State. On Tuesday October 4, 2022, during an inspection of work at the Ebonyi Airport, Onueke, he claimed some civil servants came late to work. The alleged late comers were forced to sit on the road while soldiers in Umahi’s convoy whipped them with horsewhip. When the scandal broke, Umahi while not denying that he got the workers whipped, claimed the victims were not civil servants, but “miscreants”. I had pointed out that flogging is not in the civil service rules and that even if the civil servants turned out to be miscreants, they deserve their day in court rather than Umahi constituting himself into the prosecutor, counsel, judge and appeal court.

On October 4, 2019 Umahi’s convoy was temporarily blocked by mourners in Onicha; he got them arrested. Then next day at a public function in the Government House, Abakaliki, he gave a chilling directive: “Next time the ADC should order for a shoot. It is very illegal to block the governor. And if anybody is killed in the course of that, it is allowed in the law.”

He gave a similar directive in March, 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown when 37 persons were arrested and quarantined for disobeying the COVID-19 lockdown order. He directed the security men at the isolation centres to shoot any of those arrested who may try to escape.

Also, during the period, it was mandatory for everybody in the country to wear face masks. But there were some people violating the directive. In Ebony State, Umahi directed that all those caught without face mask should be seized and caned publicly.

Umahi as the law in Ebonyi State detained without trial, the Sun Newspaper reporter, Chijioke Agwu, for allegedly publishing in the newspaper’s April 17, 2020 issue an inaccurate report on Lassa fever outbreak in the state.

He later set the journalist free, but banned him and Peter Okutu of Vanguard Newspapers for life from entering any government facility in the state. He forgot that he himself could not be governor for life. Three days later, he got Mr Okutu detained for allegedly being “fond of degrading Ebonyi State”.

Umahi told journalists that they would not be given the right to trial under the country’s laws: “If you think you have the pen, we have the ‘koboko’(cow hide whip). Let’s leave the court alone. Ebonyi people are very angry with the press and let me warn that I won’t be able to control them or know when they unleash mayhem on you if you continue to write to create panic in the state.”

Clearly, Minister Umahi, by his altercation with the workers in the Works Ministry, has not changed his ways. But he needs to or how does he intend to minister to the needs of Nigerians if he continues to be lawless?

  • Labour Party faults David Umahi on Senate seat replacement

Labour Party faults David Umahi on Senate seat replacement

The Labour Party has faulted Chief David Umahi’s declaration on his right to choose his replacement for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District seat.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Ebonyi South Senatorial District seat became vacant after Umahi, the immediate past Governor of the State, was appointed Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu.

The Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja on Sept. 8, ruled that Umahi was the district’s validly elected Senator and dismissed petitions from the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Umahi, however, on Sept. 9 during a visit to Gov. Francis Nwifuru, said he has the right to choose his replacement at the senate being a prominent stakeholder of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to the development in a statement on Monday, candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 election in Ebonyi south senatorial district, Chief Linus Okorie, urged the Minister to instead focus more on delivering good roads to Nigerians.

“I might not delve into issues concerning the APC but I advise that he leaves matters concerning the seat, having resigned from it. He should realise that the matter is still a subject of litigation,” he said.

Okorie noted that he and the Labour party would appeal the tribunal’s judgement which dismissed their petitions.

“No fresh elections are in view unless the court of appeal decides,” he said.

He urged stakeholders of the district to focus on what was best for them in the people’s interest.

“The ultimate decision rests with the stakeholders in case the court of appeal orders a rerun,” the statement read.

  • How leaving PDP to APC nearly took my life – Umahi

How leaving PDP to APC nearly took my life – Umahi

The Minister of Works, David Umahi has disclosed that leaving the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) nearly took his life.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Umahi made the disclosure on Saturday during his visit to Gov. Francis Nwifuru as part of his tour of the State to inspect federal roads.

Recall that Umahi, a former Governor of Ebonyi State, decamped from the PDP and joined the APC in November 2020, saying his defection was in obedience to the will of God as well as obedience to the wish of Ebonyi people.

The former Governor, however, noted that his decision to decamp to the APC from the PDP has yielded fruits with the projection of the State in mainstream politics.

“That decision nearly took my life, my properties were burnt and I became the enemy of the entire Igbos. The decision fetched all of us our present position so support the governor to deepen the party in the state and south east zone,” he said.

He declared that President Tinubu was ordained by God to lead the country, noting that he had maintained that stance since the electioneering period.

“I urge the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and other Igbo stakeholders, to support Tinubu. The president gave us the foremost ministerial position even when we didn’t vote well for him,” he said.

Speaking further during the visit, Umahi declared that he has the right to decide his replacement as the Senator representing Ebonyi South District under the APC.

Recall that Umahi left the Senate after being appointed the country’s minister of works by President Bola Tinubu.

Also, the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Sept. 8 ruled that Umahi was the district’s validly elected senator after dismissing petitions from the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates.

Umahi declared that he had the right to determine his replacement while stressing that he is a prominent stakeholder of the APC as only the governor ranks above him in the party in Ebonyi.

“We would ensure that the party’s zones the ticket to Ohaozara (his Local Government Area) and it will not leave there.

“We would discuss the issue with the governor and through him, run through the court process pending where the opposition takes us to,” he said.

The minister thanked the governor for supporting his moves to make Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi (APC-Ebonyi Central) replace him as the Senate deputy majority leader.

“I asked if you could facilitate the process, you did and it is currently working.

“It is not every governor that wouid want his subject to grow but I want to assure you of complete comfort.

“President Tinubu does not like division and be assured that you are not struggling for the party’s leadership with anyone,” he said.

  • Appeal: Don’t embark on mission impossible -Umahi warns Obi

Appeal: Don’t embark on mission impossible -Umahi warns Obi

Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi has called on the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi not to embark on mission impossible by appealing the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) which affirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu at the poll.

Recall PEPT had dismissed the suit filed by Peter Obi and his PDP counterpart, Atiku Abubakar against Tinubu.

Obi, however, has vowed to challenge the judgement of the tribunal in the Supreme Court.

But Umahi while answering questions from reporters in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital on Saturday when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Francis Nwifuru as part of his ongoing inspection of federal roads in the south-east, urged Obi not to go on appeal against the tribunal judgement.

He said the LP presidential candidate will still fail in the Appeal court as according to him, he came 3rd at the general election.

The former Ebonyi Governor of Ebonyi claimed God told him that Tinubu will become President of the country in 2023 and it has manifested in his victory.

Umahi said: “Throughout the campaign period and even now, I keep saying it boldly that God told me that Tinubu will be President of Nigeria.

“It was tough here in South East but I am very happy that Tinubu eventually became the President of this country.

“Like I said in Imo State, God has a purpose for everybody. There was John the Baptist, there was Christ and there is still Christ.

“Peter Obi has served the purpose of John the Baptist for the Divine President Bola Tinubu Ahmed, that’s all that God brought him to do this time around.

“So, I advise him not to go to any court of appeal. I am not a Lawyer but the Governor of Ebonyi State is a Lawyer and he has interpreted the judgment and it has left no hope for any appeal.

“Those judges are spirits. They went into everything and dissected them just like getting a coconut and breaking it. You will get the water and everything and get the nut.

“So, I advise him not to go to appeal, he is not even 2nd, he came 3rd at the election. he is our brother. Let South Eastern people come together to support President Tinubu. He made us the number one Minister even when we didn’t vote very well for him.

“But we voted even very well more than other regions because through the calling of John the Baptist, we were able to bring down PDP and that is a victory for APC”.

He called on the south east to key into the centre to be treated fairly like other regions of the country.

Subsidy palliative: Ebonyi government increases workers’ pay, to recruit 1,454 civil servants

The Ebonyi state government has approved immediate increment of ₦10,000 to the state civil servants across board to cushion the effect of subsidy removal by the federal government.

The government also okayed the recruitment of 1,454 Ebonyians into the state workforce .

Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Mr Jude Okpor, made this known on Friday during a press conference on the outcome of Thursday’s State Executive Council meeting held at centenary city, new government house, Abakiliki.

He said, “The Executive Council led by His Excellency the Chairman of Council approved that N10,000 be added to every worker’s salary in the state to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal as palliative.

On the Ebonyi state University ( EBSU) Abakiliki, the commissioner stated that governor Nwifuru mandated the secretary to the state statement(SSG), Professor Grace Umezuruike to look into the finances of the institution and determine the upwards review of subvention of the university.

“Council also approved the employment of 1,454 Ebonyians into the state civil service to fill in vacancies created in the services over the years.”

According to Okpor, the governor gave matching order to the Commissioner for Water Resources, to ensure that water runs in all the nook crannies of Abakaliki, the state capital, before the next Executive Council meeting.

“His Excellency was made to understand the hardship people in the state capital are facing over the problem of water and resolved that it must come to an end,”
