  • Singer, Ed Sheeran ordered to stand trial in US over claims he copied Marvin Gaye’s hit Let’s Get it On

Singer, Ed Sheeran ordered to stand trial in US over claims he copied Marvin Gaye’s hit Let’s Get it On

British singer and songwriter, Ed Sheeran will face trial in the US over claims he copied his 2014 hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’ from Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic ‘Let’s Get It On’.

U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton in Manhattan denied Sheeran’s bid to dismiss the copyright infringement suit, saying a jury should decide on whether the two songs are substantially similar.

The move comes after Sheeran, 31, and his co-songwriters were awarded more than £900,000 in legal costs in June after winning their UK High Court copyright trial over the hit Shape of Year in March.

After that ruling six months ago, Sheeran lashed out at the ‘baseless claims’ being brought against singer-songwriters.

On Thursday, Judge Stanton said that Sheeran must now face trial in the US amid claims Thinking Out Loud is copied from Gaye’s Let’s Get It On.

The copyright infringement suit was originally lodged in 2018 – not by Gaye’s family, but by Structured Asset Sales LLC, which owns a portion of ‘Let’s Get It On’ co-writer Ed Townsend’s estate.

Structured Asset Sales (SAS) is seeking $100million in damages while alleging Sheeran and his co-writer Amy Wadge ‘copied and exploited, without authorization or credit’ the Gaye song, ‘including but not limited to the melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bass line, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping’.

Gaye co-wrote Let’s Get It On with Edward Townsend, an American singer and songwriter who died in 2003.

They released the song in June 1973 and it hit No.1 in September that year. More than 10 years later, Gaye was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Senior – whose surname is spelt differently – at their house in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, after an argument on 1 April, 1984, on the eve of his 45th birthday.

On Thursday September 29, Judge Stanton said a jury must decide whether the two songs are substantially similar because music experts on both sides of the dispute disagree whether Sheeran’s song mimics ‘Let’s Get It On.’

‘Although the two musical compositions are not identical, a jury could find that the overlap between the songs’ combination of chord progression and harmonic rhythm is very close,’ Stanton said.

An attorney for Structured Asset Sales, Hillel Parness, told Reuters the company is ‘pleased’ with the ruling.

  • I have a verse for Fireboy’s ‘Peru’ – Ed Sheeran

I have a verse for Fireboy’s ‘Peru’ – Ed Sheeran

Grammy award-winning singer, Ed Sheeran has announced that he will be featuring on Fireboy DML’s ‘Peru’ remix this December.

Ed Sheeran made this known during his 15 minutes chat via Apple Music’s ‘Rocket Hour’ platform with Elton John, adding that he’s obsessed with ‘Peru’ and finds it addictive.

Speaking on how he got to work with Fireboy, Sheeran said, “So I got sent his song ‘Peru’ a week ago, to remix it. Someone, a friend of mine, Jamal [Edwards] who runs SBTV sent it to me.

“He said, ‘Fireboy DML would love you on the remix of this song and I’ve just found it really intriguing. So I recorded a verse for it and it’s a song that’s blowing up in Nigeria and Ghana at the moment and their club scene runs over Christmas’.

“So you basically put a song to the club in the middle of December, which would seem a weird thing to do in England. But yeah, so I have done the remix for this song, but the original is just an ear-worm, it’s addictive and I’m obsessed with it.

“I mean, Cherry will tell you, I’ve had this song on repeat constantly in the house for the last week.”

I prefer Ghanaian jollof, Ed Sheeran tells Yemi Alade

Award winning singer, Ed Sheeran has said he prefers Ghanaian jollof rice over that of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru reports that in the past years, there has been a heated debate over which country has the best jollof rice between Nigeria and Ghana.

At a recent event in London, Sheeran had met Yemi Alade, talented Nigerian songstress.

During a chat between the pair, Alade had asked him about his view on the controversial topic.

Responding, Sheeran said he would choose Ghanaian jollof rice because he has not been to Nigeria.

“I think I prefer Ghanaian jollof, I haven’t been to Nigeria. So, I’ll go with Ghanaian jollof,” he said.

Alade also took to her Instagram page to share a video of the pair’s chat.

“So @teddysphotos started arguing about Ghanaian and Nigerian jollof (he hasn’t eaten Nigerian jollof yet oo, the battle hasn’t been won),” she wrote.

  • Rihanna knock down Elton John, Ed Sheeran on UK music rich list

Rihanna Fenty has toppled music moguls like Mick Jagger, Elton John and Ed Sheeran on a UK rich list, less than a year after she moved to London.

The Barbadian songstress, who last unveiled an album in 2016, made the top-three of Sunday Times’ music rich list with an estimated £468m fortune, having moved to the UK in May 2019.

Rihanna, 32, was, however, toppled by Andrew Lloyd Webber (composer) and Paul McCartney (singer-songwriter), both of whom were joined first with fortunes of £800m per capita.

It is believed that Rihanna’s wealth was boosted by the success of her Fenty cosmetics brand and other partnerships such as her lingerie line alongside the record sales from her eight albums.

See part of the list below:

    • Lord Lloyd-Webber— £800m, down £20m
    • Sir Paul McCartney— £800m, up £50m
    • Rihanna— £468m, new
    • Sir Elton John — £360m, up £40m
    • Sir Mick Jagger— £285m, up £10m
    • Olivia and Dhani Harrison— £270m, up £20m
    • Keith Richards— £270m, up £10m
    • Sir Ringo Starr — £260m, up £20m
    • Michael Flatley— £206m, up £2m
    • Ed Sheeran— £200m, up £40m
    • Sir Rod Stewart— £200m, up £10m
    • Sting — £200m, no change

Sunday Times Rich List details the wealth of the 1,000 richest people in Britain.

Robert Watts, its compiler, said Rihanna’s inclusion marks a “seismic change” taking place at the top of the list in recent years as those with inherited wealth are usurped by younger self-made stars.

“If you look through the yellowing pages of the first list in 1989, it looks like a rogues’ gallery of middle-aged and elderly white men,” he said.

“It was earls, dukes, and figures from manufacturing and finance. Now money is being made in different ways, and by all sorts of different people – like Rihanna.

“The cancellations of tours and the pulling of albums (due to COVID-19) mean it will be a thin year.

“We expect most artists’ earnings to flatline but not for them to necessarily lose money because the bulk of their wealth is already earned and safely in their bank accounts.”

  • Ed Sheeran Marries his Childhood Sweetheart in secret wedding

Award winning singer, Ed Sheeran has reportedly married his fiancée Cherry Seaborn in a discreet Suffolk ceremony believed to have happened in December 2018.

According to what a source told The Sun, Sheeran tied the knot with Cherry just before Christmas, in a ceremony attended by just 40 guests made up of only very close friends and family.

A source said: ‘Ed got married a few days before Christmas. It was very quiet – just Ed’s oldest school pals, limited family, and the priest.

‘There were only 40 people – so no Taylor Swift, record company executives or any royals or popstar pals. He wanted no fuss and he wanted it to be something entirely for them – just a tiny winter wedding.

‘Neither of them were that fussed about making a big deal about it. Cherry just wanted to get it out of the way without any problems or intrusions.’

The source also noted that Ed who announced his engagement to Cherry, 26, in January is planning another big festival-style wedding party which will happen around the summer for their celebrity friends, who were not part of the intimate secret wedding.

  • Musician Ed Sheeran is engaged!

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran took to his Instagram few hours ago to announce his engagement to childhood crush and sweetheart Cherry Seaborn after secretly proposing last year.

Ed shared a sweet Instagram post of the pair kissing with the caption:

“Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx, as he revealed that he proposed last year but chose to keep the news private until now.”

The 26-year old singer met Cherry, 24, when they were both students at Thomas Mills High School in Framlington, Suffolk but the pair were separated when Cherry left high school to attend Duke University in Durham North Carolina in America.

According to Daily Mail, Ed did not begin dating the consultant until 2015, when she was working on Wall Street, the financial district of New York. Ed had the chance to fall in love after the pair spent most of 2016 travelling the world together during his one year break off music in 2016. “This has been the first time I’ve ever actually had the time to fall in love properly, he told Zane Lowe on Beats 1. ‘I’ve always got into relationships very passionately – I’m a redhead and also Irish.”

Apparently Ed found his perfect woman as his latest single Perfect is dedicated to her- “I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know, she shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home.” In December 2016, Cherry transferred to the London office so that she could move in with Ed and the pair have been blissfully happy since.

Ed had a every reason to celebrate at the end of 2017, not just with his engagement, but also scooped the Christmas Number 1 with his song Perfect, featuring Beyonce.

Ed Sheeran will be performing at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding in May this year.

  • Why I am quitting twitter-Ed Sheeran

Why I am quitting twitter-Ed Sheeran

Talented singer, Ed Sheeran has finally vacated Twitter. The singer was recently attacked on Twitter by Lady Gaga’s fans after they assumed he referred to her in an interview.

He said there is no reason for him to allow people call him all sorts the way most Twitter users do.He also mentioned that the social media platform is full of people who are always ready to say mean things based on their assumptions.

Sheeran noted that his Instagram account will automatically generate tweets on the site, but he will not be using it himself.

In his words:”I’ve actually come off Twitter completely. I can’t read it. I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. Twitter’s a platform for that. One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-f*** for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.I have people like my dad who will have a conversation with me. I don’t have to have someone calling me a whatever.

“You would have thought comments on a newspaper website could be the mean ones.Lady Gaga’s fanbase read an interview in which they assumed I was talking about her and they all f***ing hate. And it wasn’t anything to do with that at all.So I think Twitter gets on a massive steam roll of assuming things and then you get in the s***” he said
