Ifiezegbe Gagbe of Bayelsa State has emerged the most decorated athlete of the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF) in Edo after winning 15 medals in the swimming event.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gagbe won eight gold, two silver and five bronze medals in the aquatic events.

Aside the laurels won, the swimmer, who also had no fewer than 10 silver medals to her name at the last games held in Abuja in 2018, broke six records in the swimming event in Edo 2020.

She created new records in 100m Freestyle, 400m individual medley, 1500m freestyle, 200m freestyle and the 400m freestyle.

The Bayelsa swimmer returned a time of 1:01.54 in the 100m freestyle for women, against the festival record of 1:02.66 that was set in 2012.

Gagbe also erased the festival record of 5:47.95 in the 400m individual medley set in 2006 by returning a time of 5:46.95.

Similarly, she beat the record of 21:05.10 set in 2018 by finishing the 1500m freestyle women in a new record of 21:04.92.

Gagbe also created new records of 2:17.05 against 2018 record of 2:20.28 and 5:04.30 against 2012 record of 5:09.71 in the 200m and 400m freestyles for women respectively.

NAN reports that the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is expected to declare the games closed on Wednesday.

20th NSF: 16 swimming records broken in Edo

Sixteen National and Festival records have so far been set in the swimming event at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF), Edo 2020.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while two of the records are set in National Records (NR), 14 records have been broken in Festival Records (FR).

NAN reports that Team Edo set a new NR in 4×200m freestyle women relay in swimming in a time of 10:00.53 to erase the old record of 10:10.89 set in 2006.

In the 800m freestyle men, Opute Clinton of Delta set a new NR of 9:34.53 to cancel out the old record of 9:40.20 established in 2006.

She has created new records in 100m Freestyle, 400m individual medley, 1500m freestyle, 200m freestyle and the 400m freestyle respectively.

The Bayelsa swimmer returned in a time of 1:01.54 in the 100m freestyle for women, against the former FR of 1:02.66 set in 2012.

LOC backs down on threat to shut down 20th NSF

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) tagged ”Edo 2020” has rescinded its decision to abruptly shut down the 13-day event.

Musa Ebomhiana, a Project Manager in the LOC’s Media and Communication Sub-Committee, in a statement Thursday evening said the decision was taken after an emergency meeting.

He said the meeting was to review the Presidential intervention which came after a financial crisis threatened the festival.

Ebomhiana disclosed that the meeting, which was presided over by the LOC Chairman, Philip Shaibu, agreed that the festival should continue.

“The LOC agreed that the Presidential intervention is a very strong and direct commitment which we must all respect, honour and take seriously.

“We strongly believe and respect them commitment from the Presidency. We take them by their words.

“It’s a strong message to us that they are committed to redeeming their pledge to support us for the losses suffered arising from the three postponements of the games,” he said.

The LOC then commended President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo for their commitment towards the success of the festival.

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development had earlier assured that the 20th NSF hosts would get Federal Government’s financial support to ensure the Games go on as planned.

Nebeolisa Anako, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, while giving the assurance at a press conference in Benin, had stated that the process of getting funds was at an advance stage.

The assurance came on the heels of Wednesday’s threat by the Edo Government to abruptly shut down the festival by noon on Thursday.

Edo’s threat was as a result of the non-release of the support fund promised by the Federal Government.

NAN reports that Edo had made good its threat when it shut down the secretariat of the festival’s Main Organising Committee (MOC) on Thursday morning.

Edo 2020: Every gold medal attracts N1m – Gov. Okowa

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Friday assured the state’s contingent to the 20th National Sports Festival holding in Edo from April 2, that every gold medal won at the festival would attract N1 million reward.

The governor made the announcement at a pre-departure prayer session for the contingent at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, and restated that the state would continue to reward deserving athletes.

He reaffirmed that the reward would be a repeat of what the athletes received for medals won at the 19th edition of the festival held in Abuja.

He said that each silver medal won attracted N500,000 to the athlete while winners of bronze medals received N250,000 for each medal.

He charged Delta Sports Commission to ensure that members of the team received the best of comfort at the games, adding that the team should avoid any negative incident in Edo.

“In the last several months, you have gone through trying times that will bring discouragement.

“But at last, we give God the glory because the 20th National Sports Festival will begin today.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all plans, including the economy of the nation and even sports have been badly affected but we thank God that the National Sports Festival is finally taking off.

“In the last sports festival the athletes made us very proud as a state, because we were very emphatic in our victory and we didn’t just have victory we actually dominated the games.

“It appeared that we didn’t have any competitors and I know, as you go to Benin, you must be vigilant and committed with the passion to re-enact our victory in Abuja 2019.

“The ability to win starts from the inside and you must be passionate about it and you must dream it for it to become a reality.

“We are not afraid of the numbers that will win, because as many athletes that win shall receive their cash rewards,” he said.

On the inability of the foreign athletes to attend the festival, the governor said that God used the opportunity to showcase budding talents.

He urged the athletes to pray and work hard, adding that God would renew their strength and give them the needed energy to excel.
“Go forth to Edo State to win and to dominate the National Sports Festival.

“Many states have been preparing to displace you but I am convinced that this cup will return to Delta State because I know the grace of God is with you all.

“We have continuously won the festival and I know that we will continue to win, and I want to urge you to be confident in yourself and believe in God to lead you to victory,” Okowa said.

Earlier, Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, had said that Team Delta was ready and fully prepared for the “Edo 2020 Games.
He assured that the contingent would win the games because of the support and encouragement of Gov. Okowa to the athletes.

“It is time to go to Benin City for the 20th National Sports Festival that has suffered several postponements, but thank God we are now ready to go.

“The athletes have suffered so much psychologically, but I know that they are in high spirit and they are well motivated enough to make us proud.

“As defending champions in Abuja 2019, we won with a total of 352 medals, comprising 163 gold, 88 silver and 101 bronze.

“This time, due to the several postponements, most of our foreign athletes could not make it because they have qualified to go to the Olympics.

“In spite of that, Delta will still parade good athletes that will challenge for medals because you have always encouraged us and you have given us all that we need to go and perform well,” the chairman said

  • Edo 2020: Legacy Obaseki wants remembered for, By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo 2020: Legacy Obaseki wants remembered for, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
There’s a socio-political critic in Edo (Bendel) State called Air Iyare. He’s the type that lobes dynamites at the authorities, and together with his moral suasion, you ignore him at your own peril.
That’s the lesson Military Governor Husaini Abdullahi learned in Bendel (March 1976 to July 1978) in Mr Iyare’s crusading, when he wanted to turn a secondary school in Benin City into a hotel.
Writing in the once-flagship Bendel-owned Nigerian Observer, Iyare held that sustaining the grammar school far outweighed the advantages derivable from turning the complex into a hotel.
Closing his article, Iyare stated that should Abdullahi seize the school for commercial purposes, he “will not be remembered as Abdullahi the Governor, but Abdullahi the hotelier.” And that did it! Mr Abdullahi, who retired as Vice-Admiral and died in 2019 at 80, let the grammar school be.
The moral here isn’t Abdullahi’s succumbing to public opinion, but the legacy he would’ve left behind had he turned the secondary school buildings into a commercial venture.
Coming to the now, what legacy does Godwin Obaseki want to be remembered for after his eight-year tenure in 2024 in Edo State? Is it as Obaseki the Governor or Obaseki the “demolisher”?
Mr Obaseki should ponder this, as he embarks on a bulldozing spree of property of his real or imagined enemies, many, to wit, are stalwarts of opposition All Progressives Congress in Edo State.
Obaseki’s first act was in February 2020, when, on the excuse of “building on government property,” he sent bulldozers to pull down a multi-million Naira hotel owned by Mr. Tony Kabaka Adun.
Obaseki said the hotel was built on government land, and warned that, “anybody who contravenes the law, no matter how highly placed you are in Edo State, you will be dealt with.”
“Businesses cannot thrive when there is anarchy and complete disrespect for the law. For us as a government, whatever we need to do to ensure that there is law and order, will be done,” he said.
Having ignored an order of the court that’s about to give judgment on the hotel, Obaseki turned round to demand N18 million from Mr Adun, as the cost of downing his edifice. What an irony!
Barely a year after, the demolition squad uprooted the property of former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr Pius Odubu; a House of Representatives member, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere; and the Chief Executive of PADMOZI Sports Marketing, Mr Mike Itemuagbor.
Secretary to the State Government, Mr Osarodion Ogie, rationalizing the destruction of the property of APC’s top shots, said the Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) of the property was revoked, as “they were parting gifts” by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole to his allies on the eve of his departure from office in 2016.
What’s the government’s explanation to the claim by Prof. Ihonvbere that his property wasn’t a gift from Oshiomhole, and that he had paid all necessary fees and ground rent for the demolished property under construction?
If Obaseki was acting in the public interest to retrieve the “limited” government property at the GRA in Benin City, why didn’t he bulldoze other property, starting with his own property?
That’s why critics, especially the Edo chapter of the APC, accuse Obaseki of vendetta, for “regularly and willfully demolish property belonging to perceived opponents, and dissenting or critical voices in the state, in the bid to foist a siege mentality on the citizenry.”
As noted by the publicity secretary of the APC chapter, Chris Azebamwan, “the proper thing is for the government to wait for the outcome of the court process” instituted by Dr Odubu when he learnt that Obaseki had revoked the C-of-O of his property.
Obaseki had used “disrespect for the law” as cover to demolish Mr Adun’s hotel. Why won’t the governor, who owes his re-election to the rule of law, as intervened by the courts, obey the law and wait for the courts to pronounce on the property at issue?
Perhaps, as Mr Azebamwan alleged, the Obaseki administration “knew that it was pursuing an illegal agenda,” and had to demolish the property, to render nugatory any order by the courts.
Obaseki has debunked any “political undertone” in the demolition of property on government’s lands, but official action seems targeted at allies of Comrade Oshiomhole, who “made” Obaseki governor in 2016, but worked against his re-election in 2020.
Polity watchers deduce that Obaseki is going after his “enemies” ostensibly to demonstrate that he’s still “the Governor of Edo State,” as he had told Oshiomhole during the 2020 poll cycle.
But does Obaseki need to prove his status that Edo voters, and the courts have made clear since September 2020? It seems the Oshiomhole political ghost hasn’t been properly rested!
To salvage his re-election that’s almost truncated by the Oshiomhole-led APC, Obaseki defected to the Peoples Democratic Party. So, is it payback time for Obaseki against Oshiomhole and his loyalists in the APC?
Poll over, Obaseki, receiving a Certificate of Return from the INEC, said the “war is over,” and called on his challenger, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and Oshiomhole to join him to move Edo forward.
Obaseki has denied any personal grudges against Oshiomhole, but only dislikes the APC’s former national chairman’s style of politics – the method Oshiomhole deployed to enthrone him as governor.
It appears the governor’s random declaration of “no enmity with Oshiomhole” is always for the moment, as he hasn’t taken off his foot from the gas pedal since the build-up to the 2020 poll.
Recall that Obaseki had established a judicial panel to probe the contract for the Specialist Hospital in Benin City, in which Oshiomhole sunk billions. The panel report indicted Oshiomhole.
Obaseki has constituted another panel to probe the Benin City Storm-water project, began by Oshiomhole’s administration to remedy the seasonal flooding of the Edo State capital.
Obaseki has vowed to bring Oshiomhole to book, for allegedly squandering the huge funds he (Obaseki) said he had sourced while serving as head of the Economic Strategy Team (EST) that backboned Oshiomhole’s government from 2008 to 2016.
Obaseki’s words: “I was part of that administration, because I believe Edo must be developed. So, I sacrificed my time for eight years to help organise the state. I went to the World Bank to raise money for the state to enhance its development.
“But with what I have seen in the books, I look like a fool; while I was arranging finances and other things, I didn’t know that the money I was raising was being frittered away.
“I don’t like probing; I like to go forward, but it has become very difficult, because when I look at the cost of contracts I awarded in 2020 with the ones awarded 10 years earlier, people have questions to answer.
“This type of behaviour must stop and you can’t do something wrong and be shouting that someone is wrong because you don’t want people to know what you did wrong.”
No rational mind would begrudge Obaseki for what he says is “cleaning the house so that when you (PDP members) come in, there will be no issues and we will not be deceived any more.”
But the governor should avoid utterances and actions that portray him as undermining the rule of law, prejudicing matters in the courts, and intimidating leaders of the opposition.
Besides, his government’s actions should have a human face, which was absent when the bulldozers rolled into the premises of the affected, as relayed by Mrs. Precious Odubu, wife to the former deputy governor’s younger brother occupying the property.
“The way they came in, not through the main gate, I was afraid and asked about their mission and they told me that they want to demolish the house and if there are children in the building, they should be brought out,” Mrs. Odubu recounted to newsmen.
“Without even waiting for my response, they just brought in their bulldozers and started destroying the house without allowing us to remove our properties.”
In trying to cleanse the Augean stables of alleged financial sleaze committed on Oshiomhole’s watch, Obaseki should weigh the import of an Esan proverb, which says: “If you pursue your enemy without restraints, you will pay for it.”
Obaseki will earn applause of his followers if he continues with the demolition of property of opposition elements. He shouldn’t tread that route, but ensure the “war” is truly over with Oshiomhole!

Sports fans can’t watch 20th NSF events live – Organisers

Sports fans hoping to watch live games of the rescheduled 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) will not have the opportunity to do so, the organisers announced on Monday.

Philip Shaibu, Chairman of the festival’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) and also Deputy Governor of Edo, disclosed this at a news conference in Benin.

“The decision was taken as a measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the games,” he said.

The LOC chairman however pointed out that other channels where the games could be watched live by spectators have been put in place.

“Television stations will be beaming the games live, while social media channels among others will also be live-streaming the games.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 20th NSF tagged “Edo 2020” has been rescheduled to take place from April 2 to April 14 after several postponements.

Edo 2020: Everything needed are ready for National Sports Festival – LOC

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF) says the state is putting finishing touches to preparations for the event scheduled for Feb. 14 to Feb. 28.

Musa Ebomhiana, the LOC’s Head of Communications/Media, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that all needed for the festival, especially as it concerns observing the COVID-19 protocols, have been provided.

Ebomhiana, who is the Chief Press Secretary to Edo’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, said this was important as the festival had witnessed two postponements because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I can assure that the festival will hold this time around.”

He added that he was confident the state can now host any international competition of any magnitude, going by what they have on ground now to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The LOC official argued that there was now no reason not to hold the event tagged “Edo 2020”.

“COVID-19 pandemic has been there and the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season is also on now.

“So, since football has a lot to do with contact, why can we not have the National Sports Festival?

“The One Service One Medal (OSOM) Games Also took place last week, while other events have been taking place where people gather from across the country.

”So, what is the difference between those ones and the National Sports Festival?” he said.

Ebomhiana explained that adequate measures to curtail any spread of COVID-19 had been taken.

“As regards COVID-19, all the things they said we should put in place are now in place.

“We will also have a certificate of clearance for every athlete and official coming into Edo. They have to present it before being accredited.

“Equally, individuals must wash their hands and observe the protocols of wearing face masks and washing of hands before entry into every venue of the game, and they must be certified free of the virus before they leave Edo,” he said.

The LOC official added that nine venues, including the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, have been renovated and equipped for the two-week sports event.

Ebomhiana added that in order to adequately manage the event, the festival had been divided into two phases as part of strategies to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have nine venues, and we have a stadium which can take about 15,000 but which will not take more than 1,000.

“That is why I say everything has been put in place as directed the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and the National Council on Sports which met in Asaba late last year.

“They gave us guidelines on what to put in place and we have done all that and the games will begin on Feb. 14 to to end on Feb 28, while the opening ceremony is on Feb. 16.

“And, the essence of The festival being in two phases is for it not to be crowded. By the time we finish phase one, the athletes will depart the state.

“So, these are the guidelines and I believe they were well articulated and well digested by stakeholders who participated in that meeting in Asaba, and we have been having virtual meetings with the Sports Ministry on the organisation,” he added.

The LOC official listed the first phase games to include athletics, deaf athletics, para athletics, ayo, beach volleyball, dambe and golf.

“The rest are gymnastics, judo, langa, deaf table tennis, para table tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, para-lifting and weightlifting.

“The games for the second phase are abula, badminton, chess, darts, karate, kickboxing, kokawa, kung fu, scrabble, squash, tennis and wrestling.

“The venues for each of these games have been well outlined,” he stated.

Edo 2020: Ize-Iyamu appeals judgement nullifying deputy’s candidacy

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the September 19, 2020 governorship election in Edo state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has appealed the judgement of a State High Court which nullified the candidacy of his running mate, Audu Ganiyu.
TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the Court presided over by Justice Hellen Courage-Ogbebor, had on Wednesday declared Ganiyu’s candidacy as invalid for giving false information to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), in form EC9 affidavit, to enable him contest the governorship election in the state.
The judgement followed a suit filed by Kadiri Oshoakpemhe against the APC deputy governorship candidate and others.
The trial Judge also by extension, declared Ize-Iyamu unfit to contest the said election, having fielded an unfit deputy governorship candidate.
Ize-Iyamu in his appeal, averred that the judgement was in error on the basis that the trial judge erred in law when he held that the suit between Kadiri Oshoakpemhe (first respondent) against Audu Ganiyu (second respondent) and others was not statute-barred by virtue of the provision of the 1999 (as amended) Constitution.
The APC governorship candidate prayed the court to set aside the judgement of the lower court and dismiss the first respondent for failing to prove his claim rooted in allegation of commission of crime beyond reasonable doubt as required by law.
