Police crack down on illegal arms in Edo, arrest suspects

The Police Command in Edo says it has arrested some suspects for being in possession of illegal arms in its efforts to curb crime in the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Moses Yamu stated this in a statement on Wednesday in Benin.

Yamu said operatives from Ehor Divisional Police Station on Oct. 5 arrested a suspect in Irue Community with a Beretta pistol.

In another separate operation on Oct. 6, Yamu said the police raided an Eiye Confraternity initiation ceremony in Egbeiri community, Benin, where two suspects were arrested.

According to him, the operatives in the process confiscated a locally made revolver gun and two single-barrel guns.

“The suspects have confessed to the crime and will soon be charged to court,” he said.

The police spokesperson said the state Commissioner of Police, Nemi Iwo reassured the general public of the Command’s commitment to curb crime in the state.

He said the commissioner reiterated the subsisting ban by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun on the activities of non-state actors in the state.

He said the command would not tolerate the bearing of firearms by anybody or any group under whatever guise in the state.

  • Edo guber: INEC doctoring BVAS to conceal rigging – PDP alleges

Edo guber: INEC doctoring BVAS to conceal rigging – PDP alleges

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is doctoring the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used for the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

The PDP, while demanding immediate release of election materials for inspection, accused INEC of doctoring the BVAS machines with the view of concealing alleged rigging that took place in the Edo election.

The party in a statement by Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary, strongly condemned the reported refusal by officials of INEC in Edo State to grant the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo access to the BVAS machines.

The PDP had sought access to the BVAS and other materials used in the September 21, 2024 Edo State Governorship election but the party has accused the electoral umpire of refusal against the Order of Court.

The statement reads in part: “Our Party also alerts the public of how compromised INEC officials used the ploy of waiting for “directives from above” to allegedly allow thugs recruited by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some unscrupulous police operatives to invade the INEC office in Edo State so as to cause confusion and frustrate the PDP from accessing these sensitive materials.

“INEC’s refusal to release the materials is in brazen affront of the Order of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Holden at Benin City, dated 29th day of September, 2024 which ordered the Commission to grant our Party and candidate “unfettered access to and open up for inspection all electoral documents or any document in the custody of the National Chief Electoral Commissioner or any officer of the Commission/1st Respondent, particularly the Voter Registers, Ballot papers, the BVAS machines, Forms EC25B, EC25B(i) Forms EC40A and Forms EC40C which were utilized for the conduct of the Edo State Governorship election held on the 21st September 2024”.

“The action of the INEC in Edo State therefore validates reports of criminal connivance of some INEC officials with the APC to obstruct the course of justice and suppress evidence of the manipulation and doctoring of election results which was clearly won by the PDP and its candidate.

“Information available to the PDP indicates that the heavily compromised INEC officials and the APC are working to alter the data in the BVAS machines, results sheets, ballot papers and other vital information in favour of the defeated APC candidate.

“It is imperative to draw the attention of Nigerians and the International Community of a pattern by the INEC to continue to present itself as a threat to democracy against its mandate to promote democratic principles of free, fair and credible elections in line with the Constitution and extant electoral laws.

“Nigerians will recall from reports in the public domain since the 2023 elections that INEC has proven to be in active connivance with the APC to manipulate the outcome of every election in favour of the APC in total disregard and contempt to the expressed Will of the people and the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022 and INEC Guidelines for elections.

“This manipulative and provocative action by INEC and the APC is already causing apprehensions with the possibility of a breakdown of Law and Order as Nigerians are increasingly getting frustrated with the Commission.

“The PDP therefore calls on the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to immediately redeem the image of the Commission by ensuring the immediate release of the BVAS machines, the results sheets, ballot papers and other vital materials used for the election for inspection by our Party and candidate in compliance with the Order of the Tribunal.

“INEC and the APC must know that there is no way the PDP and the people of Edo State will allow the mandate freely given to our Party and candidate at the September 21, 2024 Edo State Governorship to be illegally transferred to the APC which was defeated at the election”.

  • Edo State on a digital radar – By Okoh Aihe

Edo State on a digital radar – By Okoh Aihe

There is so much happening in Edo State at the moment. Elections are coming up on September 21, 2024, so the governorship candidates in the various parties are running from one end of the state to the other in frenetic campaigns to secure the votes of the people.

At this particular time, the people matter most, and politics is the only game in town. Quite exciting as this season would seem in the state, the downside of the convoluting scenario is that the helpless people are being subjected to a barrage of lies, fiction being woven and spilled out as truths but, which on the long run, would make the people more helpless, hopeless and much poorer.

Ha, my brother, democracy is good for the pockets of a few who lack vision beyond the precincts of their noses, experts in the effusion of baloney with gifted wizardry in manipulating the colours of reality, while turning white to black very effortlessly. Follow the campaigns, you will see that the politicians have exceeded the entertainment value of Nollywood while even adding a pigment of nastiness to their own efforts.

However, Edo State recently appeared on a major digital radar, a rare opportunity I opine, should not be mired in the colours of politics. A research by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), in conjunction with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), titled, Collaborative regulation: Accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation, credits the state with a digital readiness to easily work with the Nigerian government in its march towards fifth generation collaborative digital regulation (G5) which can promote an enabling environment for digital transformation. The state possesses all necessary tech paraphernalia to build a modern state and develop an inclusive digital ecosystem.

The G5 framework goes beyond the narrow consideration of only telecommunications/ICT to a far broader one of each country’s readiness to exploit a fully enabled digital economy and society.

“The country reviews are an important tool for regulators and policy makers as they work to create an environment that promotes investment, competition, digital innovation, protects consumers, and ensures that the benefits of digital transformation are widely shared,” Dr Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director, Telecommunications Development Bureau (BDT of ITU said.

In considering the place of Edo State in the nation’s digital ecosystem,  the ITU research stated: “Edo State provides a good case study of how states in Nigeria can promote digital transition to complement federal activities. The Edo State ICT Agency coordinates all state-wide implementation, while the State Ministry of ICT is the main policy-making body.

“Edo State has a bold ICT-enabled vision to create a globally competitive state, to provide efficient and effective public services, and to become Nigeria’s technology hub,” the research observed.

Some listed initiatives of the state, according to the research, include: Structured ICT training programme for staff; All 72 ministries, department and agencies are already on the edo.gov e-government platform; Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a fibre optic  company to cover 18 local governments, including facilities along the route (hospitals, schools, etc.); Currently 1782 km rolled out, with zero rated rights of way for fibre operators; Three data centres, with co-hosting provided for SMEs; Establishment of Edo State Park, targeting 15, 000 software engineers within fives years; and Digitised records, including all land registration records.

These are some of the cardinal activities that have happened during the time of Governor Obaseki and they have been appreciated even globally because of their positive impact on the state and beyond, and even how such cerebral reasoning has positioned the state for growth. The country review was between November 2022 and July 2023.

Ordinarily, it is difficult for simple minds to understand why a government would not collect right of way (RoW) charges – seen as easy sources of generating revenue – from telecommunications companies, especially from a company charged with laying cables across the 18 local government areas of the state. It is difficult for simple minds to understand why a state would build a computer superstructure in order to have a complete command and control of all its activities and remove greedy mouths from the various channels which are now streamlined and can be viewed on a video wall. You actually need a certain level of cerebral elevation to feature in the new ecosystem and must thus be amenable to some level of training.

So, as the state struggles in the mire of politics, this writer is not expecting anybody to give Obaseki credit, especially if you don’t belong to his camp. Our genre of politics demands that even good deeds/achievements should be degraded to the level of little acceptance, if there is any acceptance at all. They must be bad-mouthed into nothingness. They can accuse the governor of being confused and leading the state on a journey of no return. They have done so, the politicians who see inclusive growth as rocket science. I feel sorry for their ignorance and I sympathise with Obaseki, the misunderstood.

Within the week, I reached out to a fellow who once worked with the governor but they have since parted ways in no pleasant circumstances. Without dredging up the root of your quarrel,  would you be sincere enough to affirm some of the issues stated in the ITU report. With a ready answer, the fellow told this writer that Obaseki is structured and detailed and reasons on his feet. Some of the decisions he has taken, like building a computer network for the Civil Service, have denied the politicians their undeserved reward system, so they fight him daily. With just the input of a number, the Edo State employee would have all his/her details on the dashboard, the fellow said.

As a tech writer, I am happy that Edo State has a fibre optic ring that has connected most of the prime facilities, which makes WiFi available in some of these facilities. I have had the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, make a little boast of that. Such profiting is allowed.

Unfortunately, our politics is about patronage and allegiance to political godfathers,  about phantom developments and big cars to navigate roads that are in a very poor state, our politics is all about lies and demonstrated capacity to intimidate people into silence. Shock and awe is the name of the game. Often our politics is a war zone, and those without the bestiality to partake in it, must clap for the bold, the brave and the very cunning and vile ones among us.

Before Obaseki becomes a lame duck in the next few weeks, I want to observe that the ITU Research is an indelible pointer to a fact, that he has done well to position Edo State for inclusive growth, digital transformation and sustainable development that could manifest even in a much bigger way in the years to come. My only prayer is that whoever succeeds him, will have the capacity to read and interpret his efforts for the benefit of the people, without bias.

  • Your administration had brought untold hardship to Edo people – Akpata blasts Obaseki

Your administration had brought untold hardship to Edo people – Akpata blasts Obaseki

The governorship candidate of Labour Party in the Edo state upcoming election, Olumide Akpata, has criticised the outgoing governor of the Godwin Obaseki, saying his administration had brought untold hardship to the people.

In a statement on Sunday, Akpata the suffering of the Edo people had reached unprecedented levels under the Obaseki government, which began its tenure under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and concludes under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The current administration celebrates our 33rd anniversary with pomp and pageantry, brandishing statistics of its supposed achievements. Yet, as I have traversed the length and breadth of our state—from Benin City to Auchi to Uromi—I have witnessed a stark disconnect between these lofty claims and the harsh realities on the ground.

“This political somersault has brought no relief to the common man. Instead, it has only deepened the wounds of misgovernance and unfulfilled promises. The past eight years have been a masterclass in the politics of deception—a government that changed parties but maintained the same disregard for the welfare of its citizens.

“Our youths, once brimming with hope and vigour, now find themselves trapped in a cycle of unemployment and despair. Our elderly, who should be enjoying the fruits of their labour, are struggling. Our farmers, the backbone of our economy, grapple with inadequate support and crumbling infrastructure.’

According to Akpata, the dreams of a prosperous Edo State, which burned bright 33 years ago, now flicker precariously in the winds of neglect and mismanagement.

“But even in these challenging times, I see reason for hope. In my journeys across the state, I have been inspired by the resilience of our people. I have met young people who, despite all odds, are creating innovative solutions to local problems. The stories of everyday courage and perseverance remind us of the true spirit of Edo State—a spirit that no amount of misgovernance can extinguish.

“It is this indomitable spirit that we must now channel into charting a new course for our state. In just 23 days, on September 21, 2024, we stand at a critical crossroads. In 23 days, we have the power to rewrite the story of our state to cast aside the failures of the past and vote for a future that truly reflects the greatness of our people. This election is more than a political contest; it is a battle for the soul of Edo State. It is a choice between continuing down the path of unfulfilled promises and embarking on a journey of genuine transformation.”

He said although the journey ahead will be challenging, the rewards are immeasurable.

“Together, we can transform Edo State into a land of opportunity, where every citizen has the chance to reach their full potential. We can create a state where our children no longer dream of escaping abroad but aspire to build their futures right here at home. A state where innovation thrives, where small businesses flourish, and where our natural and human resources are leveraged to create sustainable wealth for all.

“Together, we can build an Edo State that will give us genuine reasons to celebrate in the years to come. A state where progress is not measured by the wealth of a few but by the well-being of all. The task ahead is enormous, but so is our capacity to meet it. The history of Edo State is replete with stories of triumph over adversity, and I have no doubt that we will rise to this occasion once again.”

His outburst comes as the Edo state governorship fast approaches.

Akpata, had recently accused supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of destroying his campaign billboards.

This is as the Edo election is scheduled to be held on September 21, 2024.

    Edo, Kano suspend school resumption

”I wish to inform pupils, students and parents that the announcement earlier made for school resumption on 8th and 9th Sept 2024 is now being postponed. Kiru, however, appealed to the people concerned especially the students, parents and guardians to bear with any inconveniences that may be caused by the postponement.

Edo suspends school resumption over hike in fuel price

Similarly, the Edo State Government has announced an indefinite postponement of resumption of all schools in the state over the hike in fuel price. The government announced this in a memo by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, in Benin on Saturday. The permanent secretary said the resumption, scheduled for Sept. 9, was postponed until further notice.

“The Edo State Government hereby announces the postponement of the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, originally scheduled for Monday, 9th September 2024, until further notice. An official statement from the government has directed that schools remain closed due to the tension arising from the recent increase in fuel prices and the challenges faced by parents and guardians.

  • Governorship election: Edo indigenes in Abuja offered free transportation

Governorship election: Edo indigenes in Abuja offered free transportation

Amb. Peter Orobor Foundation (POF) in conjunction with Asue/Ogie Support Group Abuja, have offered to transport eligible voters in the  FCT to  Edo to cast their votes during the Sept. 12 governorship election.

Dr Peter Orobor, President of POF, said this  at the Abuja Mega Rally organised by the two groups to galvanise support for the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo on Friday in Abuja.

Orobor said that his team had already compiled data on the voters in Abuja, adding that more than 5,000 of them have indicated interest to go and vote for  Asue Ighodalo, the PDP candidate.

This, he said was due to the manifesto of Ighodalo which has revealed the developmental plans the Edo people stood to benefit if he becomes the governor.

“This forum is organised  to galvanise support for the PDP candidate .We are gathered here as representatives of various groups of  Edo indigenes in Abuja.

“We are here to extend our solidarity and support the PDP candidates and let them know that our Permanent Voter Cards (PDP) is for them.

“We are also making arrangements to mobilise and transport every Edo indigene in FCT down to Edo for election for free to cast their votes. ‘’

Orobor  called on candidates in the Edo governorship election to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the election as campaign begins especially by signing the peace accord.

Dr Aghughu  Adophus ,Former  Auditor General of the Federation,  called on indigenes to put in place a good material for the governorship seat in Edo.

“It is unfortunate that poverty is being used to get youths involved in things they were not proud to do.

“Unfortunately, the electoral umpire is the one that has a say if the election will be free and fair, thuggery can only take place where you have the umpire already taking side either openly or by body language.

“Youths that are engaged for violence go and they don’t come back, because it is very risky.

“So I will like to advise the youths that for their own future they should support Ighodalo because he has a plan for them.

“We believe that if the youths cast their votes and allow the best candidate to emerge devoid of thuggery ,then the best governor will emerge for Edo.’’

Highlights of the event was   the award of excellence to Ighodalo for his tremendous success in public service.
