Protest: Organisers have agreed on modalities in Edo – Police

The Police Command in Edo State says it has reached an agreement with alleged organisers of the proposed nationwide protest on the modalities for the protest.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Funsho Adegboye announced this on Wednesday in Benin while briefing newsmen.

Adegboye, who did not disclosed the identity of the organisers, said the  protest would hold but would not take the form of a demonstration or march.

Instead, he said, it would be an “occupy” protest, where protesters would converge on a designated venue, the public park around Ring Road, Benin City.

“The police have assured that they will provide adequate security and support for the peaceful protesters, and have agreed to provide amenities such as water and medical services.

“This is to ensure that the protesters are comfortable and safe during the protest,” the police boss said.

The commissioner , however, warned that any attempt to hijack the protest or cause violence would be met with decisive action.

He urged protesters to be peaceful and law-abiding, and to avoid blocking roads or disrupting the activities of others.

Adegboye also appealed to law-abiding citizens to go about their businesses without fear.

“The police have assured that they will protect the rights of all citizens, including those who are not participating in the protest,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the police were committed to democratic policing and would protect the rights of peaceful protesters while maintaining law and order.

The police chief also urged the public to avoid spreading false information and to rely on the control room set up by the police for accurate updates on the situation.

The police have identified a designated area for the protest and warned that any convergence outside of this area will be treated as an unlawful assembly,” he warned.

Briefing journalists in Benin City on Sunday, regarding the progress made so far in the investigation, he said they would be declared wanted if they fail to honour the invite.

The police commissioner also affirmed the command’s respect for Okpebholo.

He apologised for the inappropriate manner the APC governorship candidate was addressed in the press briefing given following the shooting incident.

How I challenged God to prove his name – Philip Shaibu

The reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu has revealed how he challenged God to prove His name in his life.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Comrade Shaibu made the disclosure at a thanksgiving service held at St. Paul Catholic Church, Benin to mark his court victory.

Recall Shaibu, who was impeached on March 18, got reinstated by the court on July 17.

In his speech during the thanksgiving, the Deputy Governor warned against violence and anti-democratic activities ahead of the September 21 Governorship poll in Edo.

He called for unity and peaceful resolution of conflicts, notwithstanding the provocation.

Shaibu, who described himself as a child of God, said he had challenged God to prove his name in his life.

“I said, prove to the world that truly I am your son. They said they will impeach me, and when I go to court and by the time the judgment would come, the tenure would be over.

“But God proved them wrong and the judgment came earlier than expected on July 17,” he said.

He warned the youths against violence, saying they could be whoever they wanted without going to the streets.

“You can be who you want to be when you are consistent and do what is right all the time. Don’t let anyone disrupt this democracy.

“You must stand your ground to make sure that democracy succeeds,” said the deputy governor.

He said violence would only lead to suffering, adding that “Nigeria cannot afford to go to war.

“There are too many economic problems that need to be solved,” he
    said.

On the allegation that he was the mastermind of the Benin Airport attack, Shaibu said the State Government was only trying to cover up.

“They killed a policeman and all of them must be picked up. The men of the vigilance group and Public Work Volunteers did that.

“They want to drag people in, so I called on the President and IG to set up an inquiry, not just to investigate but to proscribe the vigilance group and POWOV,” he said.

The deputy governor said he had changed his style and now used his brain instead of resorting to violence.

“I don’t move people to the street anymore. They said I will soon go to the street, but I didn’t go. I use my brain, and I have been winning,” he said.

Earlier, the officiating priest of the church, Rev. Fr. Charles Omogiate, cautioned against killings in the name of seeking for positions. Position, he said, would come and go but human beings would remain.

“If you take lives and property because you want position, know that you are on the part of destruction because God gives lives and only He has the power to take lives,” the cleric said.

BREAKING: Real reason I returned to APC – Philip Shaibu

Reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) “holds a special place in my heart”.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Shaibu said this on Saturday when he officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

“It is a triumphant homecoming for me, as I officially return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party where I am accepted, valued, and welcomed with open arms.

“The party holds a special place in my heart, and where I have shared countless memories. I am grateful to be back among the people and community that have always supported me, and to reunite with my political family,” he stated.

Oshiomhole warmly welcomes Shaibu back to APC

TNG reports Senator Adams Oshiomhole, whom Shaibu refers to as his father, warmly welcomed the reinstated Deputy Governor back into the APC on Saturday.

Recall that the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo was a member of the APC until 16 June 2020 when he resigned membership of the party.

Shaibu was embraced by Oshiomhole when he alongside other members of the PDP legacy coalition group announced his defection in Benin at the inauguration of the National Campaign Council of the party for the September 21 Governorship election in the State.

Dr Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the APC and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), who also received the Deputy Governor, said they have come to add value to the party.

According to him, the opposition party will certainly take over the state after the governorship poll.

Recall trouble started for Shaibu in the PDP when he showed interest in the governorship seat.

The ambition pitched the deputy governor against his principal, Gov. Godwin Obaseki, which eventually led to the impeachment of the deputy on March 18 by the State House of Assembly.

A Federal High Court in Abuja, however, voided the impeachment on Wednesday, noting that the offence upon which he was removed did not amount to misconduct.

Earlier, Chairman of the APC in Edo, Jarrett Tenebe had on Friday paid Shaibu a solidarity visit, following and attack that led to the death of a police officer at Benin Airport.

Shaibu alleged that the attack was targeted at his life and that it was perpetrated by state-sponsored thugs.

Tenebe, joined by other APC chieftains, unequivocally condemned the heinous act and celebrated the recent victory of Shaibu at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“During our meeting, we honoured the memory of the gallant police officer attached to the APC gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo’s security detail, who tragically lost his life in the unwarranted attack, with a minute of silence — May his soul rest in peace!

“I appreciate the APC Chairman’s unwavering support and kind words, which have consistently lifted my spirits throughout this ordeal with the state government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His leadership and care are exemplary, and I commend him for embodying the true spirit of leadership,” he stated.

  • Edo govt kicks as Shaibu resumes as Deputy Governor

Edo govt kicks as Shaibu resumes as Deputy Governor

Mr Philip Shaibu says he has resumed as the Deputy Governor of Edo State and recalled all the aides in his office.

Shaibu said this on Friday in Benin City while stressing that he would be working from home to prevent any confrontation.

”I have resumed, recalled all my staff. I will be working from private residence to prevent any confrontation. I remain the deputy governor. All salaries and entitlement will be paid,” he said.

Shaibu said the Thursday’s gun attack on him and the APC Governorship Candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, was an assassination attempt allegedly orchestrated by the state government.

Shaibu, while reacting to the attack, said he was taken aback by the ugly incident that claimed the life of a police officer.

He noted that he had in the last one year avoided many calls for a protest over his ordeal to forestall any kind of confrontation with state government and its agents.

The state government, through its Commissioner for Communucation and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Project, Crusoe Osagie had blamed Shaibu for the mayhem.

The state government alleged that Shaibu allegedly mobilized armed thugs to wait for him at the Benin Airport.

Shaibu said he found the allegation very funny, querying the logic in him mobilising thugs, yet was attacked, leading to the killing of police officer in his convoy.

He noted, however, that he had instituted a N50 billion suit against the Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, Commissioner and the media aide for defaming his character.

According to him, it is surprising that Nehikhare and Osagie are insisting that he remained impeached when they have refused to study the court judgment.

He slammed the state government for issuing a statement on the judgment it never reviewed, saying there were many gaps in the administration of the state.

The judgment reinstating him, he said, was declarative and had to be carried out before an appeal could be entertained in the case.

“I can tell you that Thursday attack was planned by the state governor to assassinate me. The governor vowed to destroy me when I remained resolute to vie for the position of the governor.

“They said I was the one who planned the attack but I came in peacefully from Abuja to the state capital. Why were the armed thugs laying ambush for me? Were they expecting a visitor?

“I have already instituted a N50 billion suit against the governor, Nehikhare and Osagie for defamation. They will be served next week.

Edo Govt. calls on FG to investigate Benin Airport attack

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has called on the Federal Government to set up a panel to unravel the cause of the shooting that claimed the life of a police officer at Benin Airport gate.

Recall that a police officer attached to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Monday Okpebholo, was on Thursday shot dead during a clash at the exit gate of the Benin airport.

Mr Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, told newsmen on Friday in Benin that the state commissioner of police was a witness to what happened at the Benin Airport.

“Shaibu got judgment and flew to Benin with his friends and before entry Benin he mobilised armed thugs to wait for him at the Benin Airport.

“And on arrival, they unleashed mayhem on the innocent people of Edo state and in the process a police officer was killed and many others were injured.

“The state commissioner of police had intelligence report and went to the airport to caution him not to allow his boys to assemble at the airport or anywhere in the state he defied the advice.

“We had appealed the judgment reinstating him as the deputy governor and filled for stay of execution immediately we got Certified True Copy (CTC); and he was shown the restraining order from the court.

“The CP should be arresting him, because, as it stands today, he is not the deputy governor and has no immunity.

“We are now calling on the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police to look into the crisis.

“The whole thing happened in the presence of the commissioner of police and he is one of the witnesses,” he said.

Nehikhare disclosed that the state government would no longer fold its arms and watch thugs cause mayhem the state.

He said that efforts were being made to ensure that the violence did not degenerate further, adding that the government was resolute that election would be free and fair in the state.

According to him, the opposition party wants to draw the attention of the Federal government and create the impression of anarchy and call for state of emergency.

He called on the residents of the state to remain calm, adding that government was working round the clock to ensure a peaceful state ahead of the Sept. 21.governorship election.

In his reaction, the reinstated Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, denied the allegations, stressing that he would never sponsor an attack against himself.

“What happened yesterday was an assassination attempt on my life.

“When I was impeached, Shaibu that you know would have protested on the street of Benin but I decided that I do not want to take people to the street and get them killed.

“So, I decided to use the court to prove that the impeachment was unlawful; but unfortunately, what I tried to avoid by not protesting still happened yesterday.

“And I feel sad about it because am a peaceful person.

“This fight is not about me, but one that is targeted at restoring dignity and respect to the office of the deputy governor,” he said.

He said he never envisaged that he and the governor would be on the path they were currently.

“I thank God that I never betrayed him,’’ he said.

  • Edo: Gov. Obaseki behind my attack – Philip Shaibu

Edo: Gov. Obaseki behind my attack – Philip Shaibu

The reinstated deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of orchestrating an attack against him and Monday Okpebholo, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the state. Shaibu claims that Obaseki had previously threatened to “destroy” him.

Shaibu reported receiving intelligence that Obaseki instructed his men to prevent him from entering the state. This alleged directive resulted in a shootout in Benin City when Shaibu returned after the Abuja Federal High Court reinstated him as deputy governor. The clash led to the death of Okpebholo’s police aide.

In an interview on Channels Television, Shaibu said, “I got intel that the governor told his men not to allow me into town. I’m a free-born citizen of Edo State; nobody can prevent me from entering the state. The Constitution does not permit anyone to bar me from the state, whether I am a deputy governor or an ordinary citizen.”

Shaibu also recalled Obaseki’s threat to destroy him, adding, “I didn’t know he would arm them that much. Reviewing it further, I remembered the governor saying, ‘I will destroy you.’ It was an attempt to actualize that threat. However, I believe only God can destroy a man. That’s why I decided to fight for the sanity and sanctity of the deputy governor’s office, even after my impeachment.”

APC candidate, Okpebholo will be next Gov of Edo – Philip Shaibu

Reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu has declared that Senator Monday Okpebholo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming governorship in the State will emerge victorious.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Shaibu declared this in Benin when the Chairman of the APC in the State, Mr Jarrett Tenebe paid him a solidarity visit at his private residence, following Thursday’s attack on his convoy at the Benin Airport.

The reinstated Deputy Governor commended Mr Tenebe for always calling to uplift his spirit since his ordeal begun with the PDP. According to him, that level of care is what is needed in leadership.

“The State chairman of the PDP never put a call to me or tried to resolve the party crisis, even when I have demonstrated that I am a core party man.

“By God’s grace, Sen. Monday Okpebholo and Dennis Idahosa of the APC will be the next governor and deputy in the State,” Shaibu declared.

Tenebe, who was joined by some chieftains of the party, discribed the attack as calculated attempt to allegedly take life of the Edo’s second citizen.

“What your party (allegedly) tried to do to you was actually planned to take your life. As it stands today, you are the deputy governor of Edo State.

“I have brought a message of APC and after now, our flag will be hanging in your office,” Tenebe said.

Senator Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State has been reportedly admitted in an undisclosed hospital following an attack on his convoy by suspected political thugs in Benin City.
