Youth leader takes over as Edo Labour Party chairman

Mr Ken Omusi, the Edo youth leader of the Labour Party (LP) on Thursday took over as the acting chairman of the party, ousting the Kelly Ogbaloi-led State Working Committee.

Addressing newsmen in Benin, Omusi announced the formation of a three-man interim executive committee with himself as the chairman to run the affairs of the party, pending the election of new executives.

Omusi attributed the change in leadership to the oppressive and autocratic leadership style of the previous executives.

He said that the former executives were bent on destroying the party with the suspension of over 350 members without following proper disciplinary procedures.

“I, Ken Omusi, is the acting chairman, comrade Stanley Orobosa and other members of the committee.

“We have three men committee in the state, three men committee in each of the 18 local government areas and three men committee in each of the 192 wards, ”he added.

Omusi called on the national leadership of the party in Abuja to ratify the decision in the best interest of the party.

But, Ogbaloi told newsmen that he remained the authentic Edo LP chairman

He said that Omusi lacked the authority to sack any member of the state working committee, emphasising that only the national working committee had such power.

We have no case against Oba of Benin – Edo State Govt

The Edo Commissioner for information and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, has said that the state government has no case in court against Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin.

Briefing newsmen in Benin on Thursday, Nehikare said the Oba was being sued by the Enogie of Evbo-Obanosa/Abudu, Prof. Gregory Akenzua, and the Enogie of Egbaen-Siluko, Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen.

He said “The attention of the Edo state government has been drawn to the misinformation regarding a court case involving our revered traditional ruler, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, and some Enigie.

“The case with suit no B/29005/2023, is between Akenzua, the Enogie of Evbo-Obanosa/Abudu and Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbaen, the Enogie of Egbaen-Siluko, against Oba Ewuare II.

“The Oba of Benin and the state government are defendants in the suit.

“It is sad and painful that the matter, which is essentially among brothers, has degenerated to the point of litigation.

“The government hereby appeals to all parties in the matter, being blood relatives, to work together and withdraw the matter from the court.

“They should begin a process of dialogue towards the amicable resolution of the issues in the interest of the sanctity of our most respected traditional institution,” Nehikhare said.

According to the commissioner, the state government is also open to working with all parties for a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

  • AAC governorship candidate frowns at suspension of 3 lawmakers

AAC governorship candidate frowns at suspension of 3 lawmakers

Dr Udoh Oberaifo, the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has frowned at the suspension of three lawmakers of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Oberaifo is the candidate of the AAC for the Sept. 21, governorship election in the State.

The Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, had on Monday,  suspended the three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other Principal officer.

The three suspended lawmakers are: Mr Donald Okogbe (PDP Akoko-Edo 11), Bright Iyamu (PDP Orihonmwon South) and Adeh Isibor (Esan North East 1).

Addressing newsmen in Benin, Oberaifo described the suspension of the  lawmakers as illegal and unconstitutional.

According to him, the speaker lacked the legal power and right to suspend a lawmaker democratically elected by the people.

“So what will now happen to their constituents that they represent.”

He said that the action of the speaker clearly infringed on the rights of the good people of Edo, the suspended members and their constituents.

“Our courts have consistently held that disciplinary powers of legislative houses like Edo state house of assembly do not extend to suspension.

”The court of appeal in Bauchi  State House of Assembly & ORS vs. Guyaba,  agreed with the trial court in holding that the suspension of a then house of assembly member, Hon. Gubaya for three months was illegal.

“Recently, the court also took a similar view in the case of Akinribido vs Ondo State House of Assembly.

”The point I wish to state here is that the clear malicious suspension of these members of the Edo house of assembly for whatever reasons by the speaker, is laughable, unjustifiable, illegal and clearly unconstitutional.

“It clearly shows the directionless lawmaking powers, offside decision making of the PDP led house of assembly, and lack of respect for democratic institutions,” he said.

Oberaifo urged the speaker to recall the suspended members in line with clear court precedents in similar matters.

According to him, the above shows that Edo people can no longer continue with the PDP governance and law making in the State.

He urged the people to vote for the AAC as a better alternative and for credible governance.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Shaibu to have said he received only one new official vehicle in almost eight years that he served as the Deputy Governor of the State

Addressing the issue of campaign vehicles in his possession, Shaibu clarified that the vehicles in his possession were not new but refurbished ones that belonged to previous deputy governors.

He emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability during his tenure.

“The vehicles they are referring to are the two Prado SUVs used by Lucky Imasuen as the deputy governor. The other Hilux was the one (Dr Pius) Odubu’s wife used, and the Land Cruiser was the one Odubu used.

“I took all those vehicles to the mechanic who changed their engine and refurbished them. Those are the vehicles that they are telling me to return.

“So, you can see how heartless men can be. I got only one new vehicle in almost eight years that I served as the deputy governor of the state,” Shaibu said in the interview with PUNCH.

He emphasized his commitment to activism and the need for political leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people.

On the issue of his impeachment, Shaibu criticized the process, stating that the oath of office had been breached by Governor Obaseki multiple times. He also highlighted the need for constitutional amendments to protect deputy governors from arbitrary impeachment.

  • Edo Court sentences three to d3ath by hanging for kidnapping, murder, robbery

Edo Court sentences three to d3ath by hanging for kidnapping, murder, robbery

    …another to life imprisonment

An Edo High Court sitting in Benin and presided over by Justice Irele-Ifijeh has sentenced three persons to death by hanging for armed robbery, kidnapping and murder of one Ephraim Akhere.

The convicts, whose names were given as Solomon Abuede, James Monday and Kelvin Edward were sentenced to death for armed robbery, kidnapping and the murder of Ephraim Akhere in Ihumudumun quarters in Ekpoma, the headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State

Justice Ifijeh, also sentenced one Oviasogie Sunday, alias Alhaji of Kano to life imprisonment for receiving an Infinity Jeep with registration number EFR 218 FB, property of the late Ephraim which was stolen after the murder.

The convicts were among the six persons arraigned before Justice Irele-Ifijeh in suit number: HEK/25c/24 on a six-count charge of armed robbery, kidnapping, conspiracy and receipt of stolen property.

The court, however, discharged two other accused, David Williams and Monday Ozomo, for lack of evidence linking them to the armed robbery and kidnapping.

In her judgment, Justice Ifijeh ruled that the kidnappers rode on a motorcycle, armed with dangerous weapons, kidnapped their victims and asked Ephraim, the driver and Sandra to move to the back seat and lower their heads while Solomon took over the driver’s seat.

The Judge averred that the convicts thereafter drove to the bank while two of them stayed with their victims inside the car.

She added that the other went to the bank with Ephraim’s ATM card to withdraw money from his account.

She posited that after the withdrawal, the convicts were said to have driven to an uncompleted building where one of them named Solomon Abuede threw Ephraim into a well after giving him rat poison to swallow, while the girl was given the option of jumping into the well or eating the rat poison.

The judge, further said that Solomon who provided the rat poison later spared the girl’s life but raped her instead.

The judge further added that James Monday who was said to have provided the gun used for the operation and Monday Ozomo took the Infinity Jeep and two other stolen vehicles to Kano where Oviasogie paid N420,000 for the Infinity Jeep out of the agreed N500,000

In a 91-page judgement, Justice Irele-Ifijeh held that the confessional statements of Solomon Abuede, James Monday and Kelvin Edward that they participated in the armed robbery were corroborated by the evidence of one Sandra, a prosecution witness who was in the same vehicle and kidnapped along with the late Ephraim.

The judge, who said the offences were committed on June 13, 2014, averred that the conviction of the three persons was in line with Section 3 of the Kidnapping Prohibition Amendment Law of Edo State 2013 and the Armed Robbery and Firearms Act.
