Edo 2020: Stop blaming Oshiomhole over Obaseki’s disqualification-Edo APC chieftain

…says he’s simply avoiding Bayelsa legal debacle

…he’s still having sllepless nights on that issue

A top chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Edo state has pleaded with Edolites to stop blaming Comrade Adams Oshiomhole over the disqualification of Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki as he is simply trying to avoid the Bayelsa legal debacle.

The APC chieftain who spoke under the condition of anonymity to Thenewsguru. com said:

“We should stop blaming the comrade over Obaseki’s disqualification because the Bayelsa legal debacle is still haunting him till date.

“He received all the blames as the chairman of APC because it was largely believed the party didn’t do a proper screening which made us lose the state to opposition.

“As a right thinking party loyalist do you expect him to fall into the same legal pitfall that made APC to lose a Niger Delta state.

The chieftain explained that ” all the documents submitted by Obaseki had question marks and some critics felt it should be overlooked a second time.

“If he allows it and the opposition this time around decide to apply the Bayelsa formula through the courts, who will receive the highest blame, is it not the comrade, he wondered.

“The affidavits he submitted were not in tandem with his credentials, for his HSC he simply attached a testimonial from Institute of Continuing Education, ICE and you want the party to overlook all these discrepancies.

“We can’t continue to progress in error as the party cannot afford to lose Edo to the opposition and remember it’s only the state we have in this region.

“At this stage, caution is the torchlight the comrade is holding to avoid embarrassing legal pitfalls because the party would hold him responsible.

Recall that another party chieftain, former Governor of Edo state, Senator Oserheimen Osunbor had recently told party members in a statement to with caution to avoid legal pitfalls that could rubbish the party.

Osunbor had advised all the warring party men to embrace peace before the primaries scheduled for June 22.

The Professor of Law who is also a member of the APC national Caucus explained that:

“The crisis in Edo State Chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) which has simmered for about two years now threatens to boil over as we draw closer to the Party’s Gubernatorial primaries on June 22. This portends disastrous consequences for the Party and the people of Edo State unless it is resolved promptly before the primaries.

“Given my position in the Party I have made efforts outside of public glare towards bringing about reconciliation by speaking to the two leading protagonists, the National Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and His Excellency the Governor of Edo State Godwin Obaseki as well as some of their supporters.

“I also tried to rally some elders of the Party from the State to broker peace. It is common knowledge that our revered royal father, His Royal Majesty the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II made his own efforts including appealing to our President Mohammadu Buhari to help broker peace among these two illustrious sons of Edo State.

” It is also believed that their mutual friend Dr. Aliko Dangote made repeated efforts at reconciliation to no avail. So did a number of others that I know.

When therefore the National Caucus of the party resolved at its meeting of 21 November 2019 to institute a National Reconciliation Committee to address the crises in various states of the Federation, which resolution was upheld by a decision of the National Executive Committee of the party the following day, there seemed to be light at the end of the tunnel.

” However, this has not happened till date as the National Reconciliation Committee which was reconstituted in February 2020 has not yet completed its assignment.

“There is now a chance that the Committee may be confronted with a fait accompli and overtaken by events if the Edo primaries (and guber elections) are held before it concludes its assignment.

“That would be tantamount to medicine after death. It will be extremely risky and ill-advised for the party to conduct its primaries, talk less of going into the governorship election bitterly divided; hence it has become urgent and compelling to hasten the process of reconciliation of all aggrieved persons without further delay.

“The reason that reconciliation is imperative is that if the Party conducts rancorous primaries and goes into the governorship elections divided, winning will become more difficult than it should be ordinarily, given the weakness of the opposition in the State.

“Even if the APC candidate wins the election the victory will be tenuous because of the threat of litigation that is almost certain to follow. This is why we must as a party tread with caution.

Gov. Obaseki vows to fight off persons hellbent on mortgaging Edo State

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo says his government will continue to align with the people to fight off “those hellbent on mortgaging the State’s patrimony for the benefit of a handful of persons”.

The governor, in his Democracy Day address, said that the commemoration was remarkable as it was a humble reminder of how far the country had gone in the quest to determine a collective destiny as one entity propelled by the common zeal.

“As a nation, we shall continue to thrive and live better, fulfilling lives,” he said.

He said that celebrating Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, in honour of late M. K. O. Abiola, was a show of appreciation for the sacrifices that had continued to define Nigeria democratic experience as a nation.

“Democracy Day is, for us, of remarkable significance. Our drive to sustain democracy since 1999 is expressed through the continuous dialogue we engage in as a people as we seek for solutions to our developmental challenges and chart new courses of progress with determination and unwavering zest.”

He noted that there was no denying that democracy had allowed active participation of everyone in society in choosing leaders to articulate and advance national development.

Obaseki spoke further: “In Edo, government at all levels will continue to extend the democratic dividend to the greatest majority of the people; we shall also ensure that the policies, programmes and projects make desired impact in people’s lives.

“The lessons learnt from our democratic journey continue to strengthen our resolve to fight off those who are hellbent on mortgaging our patrimony and short-changing the majority of our people for the benefit of a handful of persons.

“I urge Edo people, Nigerians and friends of our dear country to continue to support efforts to make the people the major stakeholders and benefactors in the process of governance,” he added.

Edo 2020: All political parties must obey govt gazette in conduct of primary elections – Shaibu

The Edo State Government has reiterated that all political parties in the state must obey the regulations spelt out in its gazette, aimed at curtailing the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), in the conduct of their primary elections ahead of the September gubernatorial election in the state.

The Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, made the call while receiving his Bayelsa State counterpart, Sen. Lawrence Ehwujakpo, who is in the state for his party, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) ward congresses.

Shaibu, who commended the PDP for following the guidelines in the gazette, urged all other political parties to follow suit as the regulations will help in curtailing the spread of COVID-19 and keep Edo people safe.

“We got a letter from your party, the PDP, requesting to make use of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium for its primary election. Governor Godwin Obaseki approved the request because the party obeyed the rules and regulations set by the Edo State Government.

“I therefore use this opportunity to tell other political parties to obey the gazette in the state, which is now a law. Just as you have obeyed, we are asking and calling on other political parties to obey the law. Any political party that disobeys the law will not hold its primary election in the state as the gazette must be respected.”

He continued: “The life of Edo people is more important than the political ambition of any politician or wishes of political parties. We need to be alive to play politics; we need to live to vote and be voted for in the election. The rules to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in the gazette must be strictly followed to keep Edo people safe at this period.”

Shaibu commended the Bayelsa State Government for the unity, progress and development the people are enjoying, noting that the Governor Godwin Obaseki led-state government is also ardently pursuing the development and progress of the state.

“Development does not have a political party, neither does progress. But parties exist to act as vehicles to actualize the wishes of the people in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We would fight for the development and progress of Edo State. No element or person will stop our progress because Edo people come first in the agenda of this administration. We will stand against anything that will stop progress and development in the state,” he added.

The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Sen. Ehwujakpo commended the developmental strides of the Obaseki-led administration, assuring of his state’s continued support for the progress in Edo State.

“We associate ourselves with progress and development. Your administration is fighting to ensure that the development of the state continues, which is commendable,” he added.
