  • Edo PDP: New era beckons after Orbih’s memorable legacy

Edo PDP: New era beckons after Orbih’s memorable legacy

An era came to an end last weekend after the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, elected a new state executive after ten years of Chief Dan Orbih holding sway as chairman.

Remarkably, for all of the ten years that Orbih was chairman, the party was practically in opposition in the state.

However, despite operating from the opposition flanks, it is an irony that as his term drew to an end that a feeling of nostalgia began to sweep through the ranks of the party over what many feared was a probable loss of momentum achieved by Orbih.

That feeling was not unconnected to what nearly all party stakeholders saw as his suave and successful stewardship in the years he held sway.

Orbih led the party to three General Elections in 2011, 2015, and 2019.

In the last election before his exit in 2019, the party won two of the three Senate seats and shared the federal constituencies with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Despite being in the opposition in the state, he remarkably led the PDP to success in all three presidential elections and qualified victories in the legislative elections.

Orbih also led the PDP to two heated governorship elections in 2012 and 2016. He has also set the frame for the party to compete very well in the forthcoming governorship election later this year.

Orbih provided strong opposition through articulating alternative programmes and policies

It is significant that while the Adams Oshiomhole era lasted in Edo State that the former governor, through his performance, persuasion and pummeling, was able to win over a significant number of leading PDP officials to his Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN and subsequently to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Among those won over were his predecessor, Senator Oserihenmen Osunbor and his deputy, Lucky Imasuen, and even the PDP governorship candidate in the 2012 election, Gen. Charles Airhavbere (rtd.).

However, Orbih was unmoving in the face of the schemes of the Oshiomhole regime in Edo.

If Orbih remained only like a rock that did not impact the Oshiomhole phenomenon, he perhaps would have passed off unheralded. But he didn’t.

For the eight years that Oshiomhole was in power, Orbih tackled him and brought a different perspective of the Oshiomhole persona that Nigerians were unused to.

Orbih would memorably be remembered for bringing to the fore the unfortunate incident when the former governor tackled a widow selling her wares along the streets of Benin, albeit illegally; that was generally referred to as the ‘go and die,’ controversy.

Orbih, through his sources in the Oshiomhole entourage, got to know of the incident and, through his resources, got the tape and brought it to the public, practically bringing the governor to his knees with an apology and appointment for the woman.

That particular incident was said to have further solidified the mystique about Orbih around the Oshiomhole entourage.

Orbih changed the fortune of the widow after bringing her encounter with Oshiomhole to public light.

The ease with which Orbih got to know the inner operations of the Oshiomhole government obtaining duplicate vouchers and such secret documents was said to have amazed officials of the Oshiomhole government.

Some claimed at one time that the fear of Orbih was the beginning of wisdom for that government.

However, the success of Orbih in his years as chairman was not only in bringing the ruling administration to account but also in keeping party unity for most of the time he was chairman.

Despite not having a governor to oversight, him, the outgoing chairman with tact and good traction was able to forge a unity that could only have been envied by contemporaries.

Orbih’s success in Edo State almost became an issue ahead of the last national convention of the PDP when some leading lights in the PDP sought to draft him as a candidate for the position of national chairman.

Orbih it was, however, gathered, removed himself from contention on the ground that his friend, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, was firmly backing the aspiration of Prince Uche Secondus, who eventually clinched the position.

By pulling back from contesting against Secondus, Orbih determined not to betray the trust of his friend who last year publicly lauded him as a faithful and committed friend.

Aziegbemi the new chairman is expected to carry on from where Orbih stopped

Speaking of his achievements in an interview with a national newspaper ahead of last weekend’s state congress, Orbih said:

“During (President Goodluck) Jonathan’s election even when Oshiomhole was a second-term governor when the presidential election was held, we won Edo state for the PDP. We also won two senators and won the majority members in the House of Representatives.

“In the recently concluded election when you now have the National Chairman of APC from Edo state, we won the presidential election for Atiku Abubakar, and we won again two Senate seats and four in the House of Representatives. I must also say that even at the state House of Assembly, as we speak today, APC can only boast of ten members out of 24.”

However, the fear for many ahead of the state congress was on whether the party would be able to sustain the momentum that was achieved by the Orbih leadership.

At the end of the congress, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi emerged as state chairman undoubtedly with the state party machine behind him.

A former member of the House of Representatives with firm roots in the Tony Anenih machine, Aziegbemi party sources has the support of Orbih and is expected to go with that momentum in taking the party to higher grounds.

  • DSS set to arraign INEC officials for electoral fraud

The Department of State Services (DSS) is set to arraign Sulaiman Ikhuoriah, an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and one other for allegedly involving in electoral fraud in the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami charged Ikhuoriah and Olugbenga Omotiloye to have falsified results in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate against the All Progressives Congress and its candidate in the elections held in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state.

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court will on Tuesday sit over the matter, which was investigated by the Edo Command Office of the DSS. The Federal Ministry of Justice has requested the DSS to present the defendants in court on Tuesday. Justice Y. Halilu will preside over the case.

In the election, Ikhuoriah was said to have served as the Collation Officer for Ward 6 in Saint Maria Gorreti Secondary School, and Omotiloye allegedly served as an electoral officer at Bishop Kelly, beside St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City.

A Principal State Counsel in the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federal Ministry of Justice, who filed the charges on behalf of the AGF stated in the case summary filed in court that the defendants were invited for interrogation on February 27, 2019 and March 5, 2019 following a petition by the member representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma.

The prosecution alleged that Ikhuoriah, “without lawful excuse,” acted in breach of his official duty by placing a call to the petitioner, Agbonayinma, and requested gratification for the purpose of delivering his Ward to his party during the elections. Ikhuoriah was said to have erroneously made the call, thinking he was discussing with the PDP Chairman, not knowing that Agbonayinma, whom he was having the conversation with, was of the APC.

The defendant was also accused of receiving N100,000.00 as bribe for delivering the Ward for PDP’s candidate in the election. His alleged offences were said to be punishable under Section 124 (b) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

Also, the prosecution alleged that Omotiloye, while serving as INEC electoral officer on the March 2, 2019 at Bishop Kelly, beside St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City held a meeting with one Ise-Edehen and collected the sum of N100,000 as gratification.

The sum collected on March 2 was said to be in appreciation of his effort in ensuring that PDP won the election during the February 23 National Assembly polls in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State

“My Lord, the summary of this case is electoral malpractices, perpetrated by the defendants who were the INEC Collation Officer and INEC Electoral Officer respectively during the February 23, 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, Edo State. The defendants have acted in breach of their official duties by been involved in electoral malpractices including bribery and conspiracy.

“The defendants were invited for interview on February 27, 2019 and March 5, 2019 following a petition by the member representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Johnson (Hon.), where his Tecno Pouvoir (Model LA7) with GSM No. 0803-428-5260 was exploited. Thus, some incriminating text messages between him and one Matthew Urhoghide (Senator), with GSM No. 0803-3385-5557, Adaeze Onubagu with GSM No. 0703-528-5622 were found on the device.

“The suspects made voluntary statements under caution, and admitted collecting the sum of N100, 000.00 (one hundred thousand Naira) only from Ise-Idehen, as appreciation. My Lord, during the trial, the prosecution shall lead evidence to prove the guilt of the defendant based on credible and undisputed facts,” a summary of the case in a court filing read in part.

Some of the counts instituted against them read, “That you Sulaiman Ikhuoriah, male, 36 years old, of No. 13 Aisosa Street, off Okhoro Road, Benin City, Edo State, on 26th February, 2019 at Mr. Biggs, opposite the NNPC Mega Filling Station, Sapele Road Benin City, received the sum of N100,000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) only as bribe for delivering your Ward, thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 124 (b) of Electoral Act 2010 (as Amended).

“That you, Olugbenga Omotilayo, male, 50 years old, of Plot 1, Longe Street, Oko Central, Benin City, Edo State, on the 25th February, 2019 was directed by Senator Matthew Urhoghide not to take the Senatorial election’s result to Eghosa Grammer School which you complied in clear breach of your lawful duty, you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 123 (3) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as Amended).”

  • Customs: Edo/Delta command raises N1.8b in January, targets N32b in 2020

Customs: Edo/Delta command raises N1.8b in January, targets N32b in 2020

The Edo/Delta Command of the Nigerian Customs Service says it has generated N1.8 billion revenue in January 2020.

Mr Alajogun Olaniyi, the Custom Area Controller, Edo/Delta Command disclosed this to newsmen on Monday in Warri.

Olaniyi also said the command had been saddled with the responsibility of collecting N2.7 billion monthly amounting to N32 billion target in 2020.

“In January, we made N1.8 billion, it is always like that at the beginning of every year all over the places because businessmen are expecting what budget and government policies will look like.

“Before now, our monthly collection used to be N1.5 billion and for the entire year, we are supposed to collect N18 billion.

“On Tuesday, the headquarters rolled out the target for 2020 and Edo/Delta command has been saddled with the responsibility of collecting N2.7 billion every month and a yearly collection of N32 billion.

“The target given to the Nigerian customs service for this year is almost N2 trillion hence the upward review of what every command must collect.

“The revenue that we will be collecting will largely be based on the volume of cargoes that we are able to get considering the peculiar nature of the Warri port.

“It is not very active, but we are hopeful that things will get better.

“However, on our part, the best we can do is to ensure that the little cargoes that comes, we collect all the collectable revenues by putting in our best expertise and making sure no revenue that is supposed to go into government coffers goes untapped,” he said.

The customs area controller said the command generated N22 billion in 2019 as against the target of N18 billion.

“The command had a revenue target of N18,02 billion in 2019. The total revenue collected within the period under review is N22,181 billion.

“Comparatively, the revenue collected for the year under review is N6.35 billion higher than that of 2018 which was N16 billion with same revenue target of N18.023 billion.

“Reasons being that we have determined that whatever little things we have, due diligence must be done with them to make sure we collect maximum duties,” he said.

Speaking on the border closure, Olaniyi said that though the development had led to increase in revenue generation of the customs service, but it had no direct impact on the operations of the Edo/Delta command.

According to him, before the border closure, the command had not been getting much cargoes from larger vessels because of the shallowness of the Escravos channel.

“So there is no way the border closure could have changed that narrative, because the obstacles which is the shallowness of the channels that are preventing the vessels from coming into Warri port is still there.

“Edo/Delta command is essentially a revenue command and not an enforcement command, we do not have patrol team on the road.

“The seizure we can only make can be from goods that come through the sea and because of the low level of activities in this place, we do not actually make seizures,” he said.

Olaniyi commended the Federal Government for taking the bold step to dredge the Warri river.

He said that the development would galvanised activities in the Warri port and by extension the command, as soon as the project was completed.

The customs Controller also commended the leadership of the custom service for providing the necessary welfare and logistics for officers and men of the command.

Olaniyi urged his officers and men to reciprocate the generosity by doing their job diligently to achieve the general goals and objectives of the Nigeria customs service.

  • APC: Time for Oshiomhole to go, says party stalwart

APC: Time for Oshiomhole to go, says party stalwart

A stalwart of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo, Mr Peter Esele has said that recent happenings in the party indicates that it is time for the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, to go.

Esele, who stated this in an interview in Benin on Sunday, said, “In life, there comes a time when you must make a clear distinction between individual and institutional interests”.

He argued that Oshiomhole’s utterances about national issues had become a huge embarrassment to the party and the country at large.

Esele said that as the ruling party, APC must do all it could to defend the institutions of the state no matter the pain or interest.

“Failure to do so is a recipe for anarchy,” Esele, who was APC governorship aspirant in 2016 told NAN.

According to him, Oshiomhole cannot claim ignorance of the fact that the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the party in Bayelsa was ineligible to contest the election, which led to the Supreme Court’s verdict.

He alleged that “the incompetence and corrupt practices at the national secretariat” of APC had resulted in the weakening of various important internal processes for the selection of party candidates.

Esele said that the losses suffered from the flagrant abuse of the party’s internal workings had led to various court judgements against the party.

“States like Bayelsa and Zamfara now have to contend with governors the people never voted for,” he said.

He further said that APC had also been factionalised in Edo, with the alleged support of the national chairman.

“Neither faction will be able to fulfil the required provision of our party’s processes and protocol.

“APC has outgrown the kind of theatrics displayed by Oshiomole who, ironically, was also a product of court processes.

“The time is now to thank him for his services to the party and move on.

“Or, are we going to wail again, when the courts intervene to sack our candidate in Edo?

“There comes a time when you must choose sides.

“This is one of such critical moments, and I dare say that Oshiomhole has tried and it is time for him to go,” Esele said.

  • Facebook, Edo partner on online training for over 2,000 teachers, schools

Facebook on Tuesday said it had partnered with the Edo Government to provide more access to online training for over 2,000 teachers and schools through its communication platform called ‘Workplace for Good’.

Adaora Ikenze, Facebook’s Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa, who made this known in a statement, said the company partnered with Edo as part of its ongoing commitment to building community and improving connectivity.

She said that Workplace was Facebook’s communication platform, which transformed teams and organisations into connected, empowered and purposeful communities.

Ikenze said the platform used familiar features like Live video calling, chat, feeds and Safety check to connect everyone and turn ideas into action.

“In order to build on its Infrastructure and Connectivity projects for schools within the area, Facebook has also partnered with MainOne and Tizeti to provide fast, affordable, and reliable Internet through Facebook’s Express Wi-Fi programme.

“The programme which started early 2019, now provides free connectivity for teachers in four schools within Edo,’’ she said.

She noted that to further support the tech ecosystem, Facebook also invested in a meeting space in the South-South Innovation Hub for teacher training and local developer meet ups.

Ikenze said the company was delighted to be pioneering such projects in Nigeria and across Africa.

She noted that the partnership with Edo Government was a perfect example of how technology could positively impact education not only for students but teachers alike.

“According to the Edo Basic Education Transformation Sector (Edo-BEST), one in five teachers do not receive relevant training to improve learning outcomes in their classrooms and that is why partnerships like this are critical in impacting positive change in classrooms,” she said.

Adam Seldow, Director of Education Partnerships, at Facebook added that they were impressed to see that a number of partners had come together to help drive impact in the Edo programme including the Edo Government.

“We are impressed to see our education partners re:Learn, and our infrastructure and connectivity partners MainOne and Tizeti coming together to impact in the Edo State programme.

“We look forward to continuing our work in adding value to education in Edo State, with an additional 8,000 primary school teachers who will be added to this programme throughout 2020, but also further afield across Nigeria and Africa.”

“Due to its current success, the Edo State Government has committed additional budget to connect 100 new schools in the State by leveraging on the fiber investments and Express Wi-Fi, ensuring that over 15,000 students and teachers will have continued internet access,” Seldow said

Dr Joan Oviawe, Chairperson of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board said the support from Facebook would assist the state government in preparing pupils to compete with their contemporaries not only in Nigeria, but across Africa.

“We have to prepare the Edo child for a competitive world; a world without boundaries where they can build valuable skills for the future, using technology,’’ Oviawe said.

The Chief Executive Officer of MainOne, Mrs Funke Opeke, said her company was committed to bridging the digital divide across Nigeria through continued investment in infrastructure that contributed to the growth of local economies.

She commended the Edo Government for its commitment to empowering the next generation of digitally-enabled youths and teachers to transform education in the state.
