Edo State Government to create world class traffic system

Edo State Government has revealed its intention to roll out a world class traffic management system across the state, adding that the process had already commenced with the implementation of the ‘Edo Clean-up Project’.

In a statement from the Office of the Chief Press Secretary (interim) to the Edo State Governor, Mr. John Mayaki explained that Edo State would have top traffic managers directing traffic in the state and that the recent clean-up in Edo State was carried out by volunteers, who were not being paid but decided to work with the government to clean up the state.

The statement read in part: “Be assured that we will have one of the best traffic managers in the State and create a model for people to learn from. We will also use technology to monitor the activities of our men and some of the technologies have never been used in Nigeria.

“There will be a TV room where we will network and see what is going on with the road users and the traffic enforcers so that when you are arrested and you are complaining, we will play back the video for you. Even the officials will be empowered to use some technology to record offences”.

He added that the personnel involved in the clean-up process at King’s Square (Ring Road) recently were only volunteers, who were trying to help the government, noting that they undertook the responsibility because the congestion had become intense and the clean-up was long overdue.

Edo to commence BTC contract bids

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has revealed that his administration would start receiving bids for the award of contract to rebuild and retool Benin Technical College on Monday.

He disclosed this when he visited the school yesterday in company of the Presidente of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Laure Boldrini.

The Governor revealed that his administration was focused on how to tackle the challenge of reviving and upgrading the technical college to excellent standards.

He said: “We are clear on what to do; we are ready to take up the challenges to tackle the problems head on. My first assignment as the Governor of Edo State was to visit the Benin Technical College to inspect the school. I am happy to inform you that by Monday we will open the bid to award the contract to build the school”.

He added that by 2019, the school would have 5000 students, most of which would be female because the government was prioritizing female empowerment.

He therefore urged Boldrini to encourage Nigerians in Italy to return back home and collaborate with the Government in the task of developing Edo State, adding that his administration would utilize the school’s premises to build facilities.

On power supply to the school, he disclosed that an agreement had been reached with Benin Electricity Distribution Company limited (BEDC) to supply uninterrupted power to the college.

Meanwhile, Boldrini expressed support for the Governor’s policy to prioritize education, affirming that education was the key of progress and prosperity and everything in life because it helped to build capacity to move ahead in life.

She said: “Education is the key of progress, dignity and prospect of life. It helps you with the capacity to move ahead in life. Education gives you the capacity to choose in life”.

  • Obaseki assures Edo local government pensioners of arrears

Obaseki assures Edo local government pensioners of arrears

Edo local government pensioners yesterday protested non-payment of their entitlements as they visited the State Government House where Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu addressed their grievances.

The protest later became a congenial meeting as both parties reached a truce on the modalities of the government’s ongoing efforts to offset their outstanding arrears and set the tone for sustainable payment process.

They also asked for settlement of their outstanding pension arrears, enrolment of newly retired pensioners, harmonisation of their pensions, and regular payments of their monthly pensions.

They also alleged that the bailout funds from the federal government had been used to pay the state pensioners but the local government pensioners were still being owed arrears.

Addressing the pensioners on behalf of Governor Godwin Obaseki, Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu noted that the government felt it was lawful for them to express their grievances, as the Pensioners Association was to serve as a mediator between the state government and the pensioners.

He said: “This is not the first time we are talking. The last time, both State and Local Government pensioners came. We discussed the issue of bailout, how it would be used and we had another meeting with the governor on it. Today, the issue of state has already been resolved. For state pensioners that have been captured, before the Governor or Deputy Governor receives their salary, they are the first to be paid. They are paid before even workers in the civil service get their salaries”.

He, however, rued the fact that the Edo State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners was not present at the protest because the state did not owe any money to the pensioners.

Explaining, he revealed that since 2008, Local Governments had been in charge of their internally generated revenue, so they had also been in charge of their workers’ pensions.

Nevertheless, the state had been responsible for paying the pensions of its workers and had already done so with the bailout funds from the federal government, while also putting modalities in place for a sustainable method of paying the pensioners their entitlements and gratuities.

“We relied heavily on oil boon before, and so corruption spoiled the payment process. Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) will be resurrected so that pensioners can be paid directly. We are trying to boost your IGR so that you can pay yourselves. We will be in a meeting with your leaders today as it is not in our interest to see our elderly ones suffer,” he said.

Continuing, he noted that Governor Obaseki had already set about duplicating the same system at the state level into the local government level because the government would not tolerate fraud and the state government could not remain aloof while the local government pensioners suffered.

“So we need to help Local Governments to establish what we did at the state level so that you can pay your salary arrears and pensioners before even those that are working. The governor is determined to eradicate owing of pension and he is concerned,” he said.

Obaseki restates commitment to improved health care delivery

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo has reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to improve health care delivery in the state, noting that health care is one of his government’s focus. He made this known as he received the management of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) South-South Zonal Office on a courtesy visit at the Edo State Government House on Thursday, where he declared his administration’s health care goals for the state and policies to help achieve the goals.

He said: “We have decided to domesticate the National Health Act to improve accessibility of health care services for all in the state. We will also develop a health masterplan, which will incorporate the resolutions made in our recent health workshop”.

In addition, Governor Obaseki revealed that his administration would also revitalise Primary Health Care (PHC) centres in the states. He noted that having functional PHC centres would reduce diseases, as it was germane to the health care system.

On health insurance, he revealed that the government does not have the resources to do so fully, after which he called on NHIS to work with the state in repositioning its health care system.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of NHIS South-South Zonal office, Dr Akingbade Olufemi commended the governor for prioritizing health care among his agenda for the state, noting that the state’s investment in health care would guarantee healthy people, who would be able to take up the over 200,000 jobs promised by the present administration.

He added that the state government should find a way to make health care compulsory and revitalize the primary health care system in the state.

When this was done, he concluded, the government would be able to take care of the 3.4 million people in the state.
