    Federal varsity in Katsina wins N32m grant from South African research foundation

    The Federal University, Dutsin-ma in Katsina State has won a N32 million research grant from a Pretoria, South Africa based National Research Foundation (NRF).

    The Public Relations Officer of the University, Habibu Aminu, made the statement in a press release made available to TheNewsGuru on Saturday.

    The institution explained in the statement that the fund was expected to be used for “Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability, Collaborative Research Action.”

    It revealed that the fund would be judiciously utilised for the intended purpose.

    The Research Foundation is an agency of the South African Government created to “contribute to National Development by supporting, promoting and advancing research and human capacity development through funding and the provision of necessary research infrastructure in order to facilitate the creation of humanities, social sciences and indigenous knowledge.”

    The PRO said the news of the research grant was broken to the institution’s Directorate of Public Relations and Protocol through the University’s Director, Research and Development, Muhammad Garba.

    In his reaction to the news, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Armaya’u Bichi assured of his determination to strengthen the University to attract more grants that will boost staff and students’ capacity.

    He applauded the University’s Directorate of Research and Development for what he described as a job well done “in not only securing the grant but putting the name of the institution in a global perspective which is in line with its vision and mission.”

    On his part, Garba told TheNewsGuru that the grant came after a rigorous process, stressing that the institution, like many across the country, require such support to develop the sector in Nigeria.

    Nigerian non-lieracy level drops now at 31% – FG

    The Federal Government has said that Nigeria’s current illiteracy level has reduced to 31% as against the 38% recorded in 2015.

    Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Opiah stated this while briefing Newsmen to mark this year’s International literacy day in Abuja.

    According to him, “This is a significant reduction from previous years. And seven per cent away from 2015 statistics which put the country’s none – lteracy rate at 38 percent”

    “It is heartwarming to note that the current statistics of 2022, based on estimations, captured the non-literate population at about 31% of the estimated total population”

    “This is a significant reduction from the hitherto statistics of 38% in 2015″, he said.

    “ International Literacy Day is observed all over the world to reaffirm commitment to promoting education and literacy. This goes to underscore the importance of education to human existence.

    As you are all aware, the world has become complex with rapid scientific and technological advancements. Several things have changed, including what it means to be literate and this administration is sparing no effort in meeting up with the demands of the present times”

    He said this year’s theme is an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.

    The Minister therefore reiterated the commitment of government in continually adopting existing and emerging innovations in the literacy learning programme

    In a remark, the Director General of UNESCO,Ms Audery Azoulay represented by the Regional Director, Mr Albert Mendi who called for more investment In the sector, also stressed the need for concerted efforts among stakeholders towards overcoming challenges facing the sector.

    The theme of the 2022 International Literacy Day; is titled‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces; Exploring Opportunities and Possibilities.

    The lingering faceoff between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be reaching its final face with Tuesday’s meeting.

    A senior Professor who is a top member of the ongoing negotiation excessively informed TheNewsGuru that government ‘seem to be waking up to appreciate the enormity of challenges it faces on the matter.’

    He said, “The body language of the minister and other government functionaries at the meeting seem different. It is unlike the puff and huff of old and the grandstanding. I think we may be reaching the end.

    “My hope is, beyond the language, that none of the two parties between ASUU and government derails. I am positive – in fact, optimistic that something tangible would come out of this meeting,” the Professor told our correspondent.

    The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, alongside stakeholders had entered into a special closed-door session over the lingering strike.

    Those attending the meeting include the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed; registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede; Emeritus Professors Peter Okebukola and Nimi-Briggs; alongside all vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors of federal universities.

    The minister had excused members of the media to excuse the stakeholders who attended the meeting and lamented the failure of ASUU to call off its strike despite interventions by the government.

    ASUU had embarked on a strike on Monday, February 14,2022 following what the union tagged as failure of the government to meet lingering demands.

    FG to include school security in 2023 budget

    The Federal Government has promised to include the security of schools in the 2023 budget.

    The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, stated this on Thursday in Abuja.

    She was speaking at the safe-school summit organised by the Emergency Coordination Center.

    In her words, “In 2023 budget, we will make sure we make specific budget to support financing of safety of our schools.”

    The Minister noted that the Federal Government would also be encouraging states to make specific commitments to the safety of schools.

    Zainab noted that consultation were underway with states, local governments and critical stakeholders to identify the most transparent, effective and accountable ways of mobilising and deploying resources.

    She also disclosed that the national financing plan for the security and safety of schools across the country would be unveiled before the end of the third quarter of this year.

    The Minister said the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning had established a committee with members drawn from the relevant ministries, departments and agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Education, the military and other security agencies, for this purpose.

    “The committee has been working assiduously to collate inputs from relevant MDAs and to develop a national plan for financing safe schools,” She added, “The plan will incorporate state level plans as well as Federal Government sectoral plans with an emphasis on ensuring adequate budgetary allocation in order to create a safe learning environment for teaching, learning and restoring confidence in the education system.

    “Consultations are currently on the way with states, Local Governments and other critical agencies of government. The committee is also working to identify the most transparent, effective and accountable ways of mobilising and deploying resources.”

  • Kano gov’t names state university after Dangote

    Kano State Government has renamed the Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil, after Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

    The approval was announced after the last sitting which was presided over by Governor Andullahi Ganduje.

    Commissioner for Information in the state, Muhammad Garba, made the development public in a statement on Sunday.

    Garba said the development followed recommendation by the university’s visitation panel.

    The statement added that the institution is now to be called Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

    It statement further explained that the approval has been transmitted to the state House of Assembly to study the relevant laws establishing the university for amendment.

    TheNewsGuru.com can authoritatively report that the renaming has been a long time coming as the visitation panel to the institution recommended late last year after the conclusion of its assignment.
