Lai Mohammed spreading fake news on Peter Obi – Edwin Clark

Nigerian nationalist and  Ijaw leader, Edwin Clark, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to call Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, to order over his alleged gagging of the media and also making unfounded and unproven allegations against members of opposition political parties.

Clark had in a statement castigated Minister Lai Mohammed for spreading lies against the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.”

Clark posited that Mohammed has become the mastermind and disseminator of fake news.

He, therefore, called on Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to investigate Mohammed and charge him to court.

The senior citizen went on: “It is, therefore, highly hypocritical within government circles today, that statements made to ensure that there is diligent dispensation of justice with regards to the largely flawed 2023 elections that didn’t threaten the existence of the country are being tagged treasonable.

“Even more regrettable is the fact that an innocent stakeholder in the person of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of Labour Party, who has not uttered a word, is being mischievously dragged in.

“Moreover, rather than mention the names of those who have been raising this question, while drag the name of Obi, who has been totally silent on the subject matter, if not for cheap political gain.

“Like I said, Lai Mohammed did not base his information on any credible intelligence report from the state agencies, but on propaganda and falsity.

“Therefore, I am of the opinion that he should be charged for spreading an unhealthy information and fake news against an innocent Nigerian, who is very prominent and has proven his worth in the country.

“Lai Mohammed used the exalted office of the nation’s Ministry of Information to commit this perfidy.

“Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the just concluded elections, has never taken the laws into his hands. He is going about his case, in the constitutionally provided way.

“He was the first to seek redress in court over what he felt was an unfair and unjust manner of conducting elections. It is his constitutional right to do so.

Muhammadu Buhari, in the number of times he contested and failed elections, did same.

“We all know that at no time from the beginning of the current political season did His Excellency, Peter Obi, make any statement that in whatever manner constituted a breach or threat to the peace and security of this country.”

BREAKING: Edwin Clark endorses Peter Obi for president

Elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, has endorsed the candidacy of Mr Peter Obi for the 2023 general elections.

Chief Clark announced his position at a news briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

The elder statesman based his endorsement of Mr Obi, who is the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party on traits he believes are critical to leading the country.

Explaining further, he cited honesty, trust and transparency, all of which he said Mr Obi displayed when he was governor of Anambra State.

Chief Clark called on Mr Obi to tackle the issues of the injustices and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region if elected as President.

The Ijaw leader’s backing is the second high-profile endorsement to be received by Mr Obi in three days.

Edwin Clark worries over brain drain, high exchange rate

Elder statesman Edwin Clark has expressed concern over reports of increasing number of Nigerians, particularly youths relocating to other countries.

He told newsmen in Abuja that there was nothing wrong with people travelling or relocating to other countries.

According to him, the recent trend where increasing number of Nigeria’s active population, the youth are emigrating is worrisome.

He said the development was leading to increased brain drain, describing it as “very bad’’.

Clark urged government to continue to put necessary measures in place to create a conducive environment to encourage youths to work in Nigeria and contribute to its growth.

The elder statesman expressed concern over the high exchange rate, which he said had led to the rising cost of goods and services.

He said Nigerians were finding it difficult to afford basic amenities.

On redesigning of the Naira, Clark urged Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele to put short term plans in place to mitigate any negative effect.

He said the rise in exchange rate was one of the likely effects of the Naira, adding that there were reports that the exchange rate had hit a record high partly due to the announcement.

“On the redesigning of the Naira, I am not a financial expert to say whether the decision was right or wrong but reports have it that the exchange rate further increased the moment the announcement was made.

“The advice I will give on this is that the CBN governor and other relevant stakeholders should come up with a short term measure that will mitigate the effect of this development.

“Something urgent has to be done to prevent the Naira from falling beyond what it is today.

“As we speak today, the rising cost of food is worrisome and something has to be done to stabilise the situation,’’ he said.

On security, the elder statesman urged government to do more to secure the lives and property of Nigerians.

  • Crude oil theft going on for about 50 years now – Chief Clark

Crude oil theft going on for about 50 years now – Chief Clark

Elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark has said that crude oil theft in Nigeria has been going on for much longer, for about 50 years, contrary to the position held by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Chief Clark made this disclosure at a news conference on Monday in Abuja, describing crude oil theft as a criminal act and calling on the federal government to institute a judicial inquiry to investigate oil theft in the country.

He said that the investigation to the matter must be full, open and comprehensive if there was sincerity to unravel what was going on.

The elder statesman said: “My attention and that of the entire country have been drawn to the recent discovery of a large scale and sophisticated oil theft machinery going on at the deep swamps at Yokri, close to the Forcados terminal in Delta.

“According to reports, high powered technological engineering expertise is applied to steal crude oil from the Forcados line.

“This is transported through a four-kilometre pipeline to a platform in the sea, which belongs to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and its partners.”

Clark further cited the report saying that about 200 hundred barrels of crude oil were been stolen from there every day, and that this has been going on since 2014.

“According to NNPCL, this is part of the 470 thousand barrels of crude oil that is being lost every month, amounting to 700 million Dollars.

“Although, the NNPCL thinks these have been going on in the past 20 years, some of us have always insisted that this oil theft has been going on for much longer, for about 50 years.”

He said that the illicit four kilometers pipeline through which crude oil was being siphoned indicated that oil theft was being perpetuated by some mafia-like groups, with the connivance of some people in the oil industry.

“What is going on is a sophisticated criminal act, carried out by a syndicate,” he said.

Clark further said that the investigation must uncover all government officials including top officials of the NNPCL and their collaborators, who had inflicted such magnitude of harm on the country, and on the Niger Delta communities.

“It is dangerously incredible that crude oil theft, in spite all the securities around, has assumed wider dimension to the extent that the quantity of crude oil we export today is less than the quantity being stolen by a gang of thieves of various designations.”

  • Delta 2023: Edwin Clark endorses Omo-Agege for governor

Delta 2023: Edwin Clark endorses Omo-Agege for governor

With an unequivocal endorsement on Thursday, elder Statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark has given a massive boost to the gubernatorial ambition of Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

At a three-hour ceremony attended by top personalities from Delta State at the Asokoro home of Chief Edwin Clark in Abuja, the former Federal Commissioner for Information who also led the struggle for the creation of Delta State in 1991 emphatically restated his confidence in Senator Omo-Agege’s capacity to turn the fortunes of the state and its people around.

“My son, you will be the governor (in 2023). Your father who is no longer with us will be proud and happy to see me, his brother working to make his son our governor. Authority belongs to God and I want to pray for you,” Chief Clark stated, adding that Senator Omo-Agege’s administration would massively transform the state within eight years.

Chief Clark disclosed that after seeing the massive pace of infrastructural and human capital development being executed by Senator Omo-Agege in his Delta Central Senatorial District, he had advised him to spread such historically significant goodies to other parts of the state, and that Senator Omo-Agege did not hesitate in accelerating the development of areas outside his constituency.

Clark insisted that he would vote for Omo-Agege against the opposing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) even though he was a once a member of PDP.

“My vote is not because you are APC, but because you are the kind of governor I have been waiting for. A governor that will develop not only the whole of Delta, but Warri, which was the projected capital of Delta before it was changed. A governor that will not emerge by imposition. A governor that will serve the interests of the state and not of godfathers,” he said.

In his brief speech, Senator Omo-Agege stated that he, along with his running mate, Rt. Honourable Friday Osanebi and members of their gubernatorial campaign team were starting their first round of formal consultations with a visit to Chief Edwin Clark before they begin visits to various traditional rulers on Saturday.

Senator Omo-Agege said that his developmental impact through infrastructural projects, employment, humanitarian efforts and human capital development positively impacted every town and community in Delta Central and stressed that he is seeking an opportunity to raise Delta State to a level where its development can become easily comparable with that of Lagos, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and other leading states.

Omo-Agege lamented the deep deterioration of Warri City and infrastructural facilities across the state over the years, adding that great opportunities exist to boost tourism, road transport, education, employment and the internally-generated revenue profile of the oil-producing state.

“It is said that ‘by their fruits you shall know them’ but my achievements in Delta Central Senatorial District and beyond speak for themselves. Among others, we have done solar street lights, provision of transformers , e-libraries and numerous other projects and we have ensured the allocation of N600 million for the construction of students’ hostel accommodation in Ukwuani Local Government Area.

“Under the 2022 national budget alone, we have over 750 projects, in 2021, we had about 600 and in 2020, we had about 450 projects” stated Senator Omo-Agege while reeling out numerous developmental projects, including Federal Polytechnic, Nigerian Law School Campus and several other projects that he facilitated for Delta State within four years.

“The Warri that you grew up in, is dead and now in great need of massive urban renewal and God willing, it is one of the major assignments that our administration will focus on if we emerge as Governor and Deputy Governor of Delta State. Okerenkoko, Ode-Itsekiri and other places can be developed and beautified to accommodate five-star hotels and become huge revenue-yielding areas like Hawaii in the United States.

“We can become what Lagos became; why can’t we generate enough internally-generated revenue to power massive development,” he said.

Senator Omo-Agege was accompanied by his running mate, Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo; former Minister of the Niger Delta, and DG of the campaign organization, Elder Godsday Orubebe; state chairman of the party, Elder Omeni Sobotie; former Chairman of the National Social Insurance Trust Fund, Mrs. Ngozi Olejeme; his Chief of Staff, Dr. Otive Igbuzor, Chief Paulinus Akpeki, amongst other party chieftains and heavyweights. Also in attendance was Ambassador Boladei Igali.

  • Constitute substantive board for NDDC now – Clark charges Buhari

Constitute substantive board for NDDC now – Clark charges Buhari

Elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark has appealed to the President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a substantive Board for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) without delay.

Clark made the appeal when members of the Delta Central All Progressives Congress Leaders of Thought (DELCAT) paid him a solidarity visit in Abuja on Tuesday.

The board was dissolved and the President authorised a forensic audit of the NDDC in 2021 following allegations of widespread corruption at the commission.

Buhari had expressed disgust that a few individuals entrusted with the management of the special development fund for the Delta had squandered the resources for more than 20 years, without tangible results.

Clark said that when the Forensic Audit Report was submitted to Buhari on Sept. 2, 2021, he promised to constitute a substantive board for the commission.

“About 10 months after, no board is constituted. This is affecting the duties of the commission, and the people of the Niger-Delta region because there is a limit to the things an Interim administration can do.

“The yearning of the people of the Niger-Delta is for the Federal Government to constitute a substantive board.

“Any other agitation, especially from some greedy and self-centred persons for Mr President to appoint another Interim administrator will be resisted,” he said.

The elder statesman said that there were speculations that government was in the process of appointing another interim administrator for the NDDC.

“If this is true, it will mean that it will be the fourth time an interim administrator will be appointed in total neglect of the act setting up the commission.

“This is an aberration. The people of the Niger-Delta have been patient and understanding enough.

“As Mr President ends his tenure, we plead and wish that the cordial relationship which has been established out of very deliberate and concerted efforts should not be truncated.

“We plead with him not to listen to the selfish demands of few individuals who want to continue to despoil and milk dry the region,” he said.

  • 2023: Kukah reacts as Clark blast APC, Tinubu over choice of Shettima

2023: Kukah reacts as Clark blast APC, Tinubu over choice of Shettima

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah has reacted to the decision by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to present a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2023 presidential election.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Bishop Kukah described the move as teamwork based on a calculation of what would work for the party and that it is not what to lose sleep over.

Recall that Asiwaju on Sunday announced former Borno State Governor, Senator Kassim Shettima as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.

The development has continued to generate reactions from concerned Nigerians who argued that a Christian Northerner should have been picked in place of Shettima.

But Kukah, while reacting to the controversy, said those angered by the development should support other candidates they feel are better.

“This is what you call team selection and everybody will choose depending on what they think will give them a fair chance.

“So people will take responsibility for the choices they have made. For me, it is not something to lose sleep over.

“If people feel unhappy with the kind of choices that have been made, that is why we are democrats, you can’t force it. We outsiders cannot force a choice of any candidate.

“It is now left for you to look at the choices that have been made. And there is no guarantee that all Christians will vote for Christians and all Muslims will vote for Muslims,” Kukah stated.

Similarly, former Federal Commissioner for Information and South South Leader, Chief Edwim Clark has reacted to the development as well.

Chief Clark, the  Convener of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), on his part lambasted the choice of Senator Shettima as running mate to Tinubu.

The elderstatesman in a statement he released on the development, stated that he felt very threatened for Nigeria as a country.

The Statement titled on Muslim-Muslim Ticket read: “I feel threatened for our beloved country because of the way things are going.

“Nigeria is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation, with Christianity and Islam as the major religions, even though Nigeria is a secular state.

“In compliance with Constitutional provisions of inclusiveness, the number one and number two positions in the country, viz, President and Vice President, have always been occupied by practitioners of the two major religions, to ensure balancing.

“It will be recalled that the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Alhaji Ahmed Bola Tinubu, could not be chosen in 2015 as Vice President to Muhammadu Buhari, because he is a Muslim and Muhammadu Buhari is a Muslim. Alhaji Ahmed Bola Tinubu, in his own words confirmed this in his statement in Abeokuta, Ogun State. What has changed? One quality of a good leader is consistency. A good leader must act in the same way at all times, to all people. He must not display double standard.

“Today, what has the Presidential candidate of the APC, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu done? He has picked a person of his religion, a Muslim, as his Running-mate. Such choice is not inclusive, it is not good for a secular state like Nigeria.

“There is presently a sharp division in the country, even on religious lines, and all patriots are seeking ways to salvage the situation. Therefore, Alhaji Tinubu’s decision to take a fellow Muslim as his running mate, will further worsen the situation in the country. He should know that patriotism is a quality of a good leader.

“On the reasons adduced by Alhaji Tinubu on why he chose Kashim Shettima as Running-mate, is the APC Presidential Flag bearer telling Nigerians that there are no Christians in the APC from the north who are “competent, capable and reliable?”

“There are rumours of an attempt to Islamise the country. Are all these pointers to the confirmation and actualisation of such rumours.

“One need to bear in mind the antecedents of the major backers of Alhaji Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition, which include Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Governor of Kano State, and the chosen one – Kashim Shettima.

“Both the Governor and Deputy Governor in Kaduna State, are Muslims. A blatant action by the Governor, Nasir el-Rufai. Unfortunately, the APC Gubernatorial candidate for the 2023 election, is following suit. Is there a deliberate move of making Kaduna an Islamic State? Unconfirmed statistics put the ratio of Christians and Muslims in Kaduna State as 50/50; some statistics even put it as 55% for Christians and 45% for Muslims, yet Nasir el-Rufai, despite complaints and agitations by people not only from Kaduna State, but from the entire country, ‘decided’ to pick a Muslim as his Deputy.

“It is illusion to think that except one is from the north, you may not win election. So, the idea that unless you come from the north or you are a Muslim, or a Muslim supports you if you are not a Muslim, you cannot win an election, should immediately be jettisoned by proponents of such an idea. The north needs the south to be in power, same way the south needs the north to be in power. No part can do it alone. About 46% or more of Nigerians are Christians.

“Yet a group of persons want to sideline and exclude them from the affairs of the country. This is not possible.

“The question is, is Alhaji Bola Ahmad Tinubu under pressure from these his core supporters and backers, to pick a Muslim as his Running-mate, and did he cave in to the pressure because “it is his turn to be President of Nigeria”, despite complaints and protestations?

“The PDP is the cause of these things because of its refusal to zone its presidency to the south.

“These are dangerous signals. Alhaji Ahmed Tinubu cannot compare 2022/2023 with 1993. In 1993, majority of Nigerians, on their own volition, supported the Muslim/Muslim ticket of M. K. O. Abiola and Babagana Kingibe of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), as President and Vice President, 29 years ago. It was not shoved on them; it was not forced on them. Also, during that period, Nigeria was not so divided on ethnic and religious divides. If people are complaining, a good leader should listen. Unfortunately, we have leaders who not only ignore the concerns of the people with impunity, but also make crass statements.

“The insecurity, the fate of Nigeria as a failing state as it is today, did not exist in 1993. The killing of Christians, especially Catholic Priests, the forty (40) persons killed at the Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State; what happened at the Kuje Medium Correctional Centre a few days ago, where about 1000 inmates, including about 63 Boko Haram terrorists were freed, the attack on the Kaduna bound train, and the killing of some and abduction of several of the passengers, does not speak well of the times we are in. They are all signs of a failing state and ought to make everyone to be very cautious in our actions. And nobody, should aggravate the situation.

“Those who are leaders should remember that power is transient.”

  • I can’t betray Igbos, Orji Kalu replies Edwin Clark

I can’t betray Igbos, Orji Kalu replies Edwin Clark

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, has said that he never betrayed the South-East in pursuing his political ambitions.

Kalu, in a statement he issued on Thursday in Abuja, reiterated his determination to continue to advance the Igbo cause.

Recall that an elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark had accused Kalu of betraying the Igbo cause by dropping his presidential ambition and supporting Senate President, Ahmed Lawan.

Clark said that although Kalu was one of the oldest vocal frontline politicians in the South-East, he doubted his sincerity and transparency.

The elder statesman added that it was surprising that Kalu did not only drop his ambition to contest the 2023 presidential election, but also declared his support for the presidential ambition of Lawan who hails from North-East.

Kalu, however, dismissed the accusation and said that rather he is doing his best to reintegrate the South-East into mainstream politics.

“I have great respect for Chief Edwin Clark; he is an elder statesman and a patriotic Nigerian. I want to sincerely commend him for openly supporting the South-East geo-political zone to produce the next president of Nigeria.

“It is imperative I remind him that I didn’t betray my people, rather I am doing my best to reintegrate them into mainstream politics.

“In the last two years, I have been at the forefront agitating for a Nigerian president of South-East extraction, when most of them were all saying “Southern Presidency”, Kalu said.

He argued that none of the actors openly said the South-East geo-political zone should have it.

“I was shocked that even the zone the entire South-East supported in unity including myself in 2011 and 2015 respectively, has the highest number of contestants without thinking of their brothers.

“This is knowing fully well that the South-East zone has remained the only zone in Southern Nigeria that has not produced the nation’s president since the rotation convention dispensation that began in 1999.

“Coming this late hour to support the South-East is rather suspicious to me if they couldn’t do it two years ago.

“The truth is, Chief Edwin Clark knows the South-East cannot get the ticket of any party in an open contest as it is today without a gentleman agreement to concede it to the South-East.

“If all the aspirants from the South-West and South-South cannot support their brothers from the South-East, it is only politically correct to support the North-East geo-political zone, which to me is the shortest route for the South-East geo-political zone to produce the president after their eight years instead of waiting for another 16 years.

“It is rather surprising to me that Chief Edwin Clark didn’t call the majority of other Southerners including governors working against the South-East to order or the names he called me.

“What did you say or do when all the aspirants from South-South and South-West were buying forms to run against South Easterners who have always supported them.

“I know some people want us to keep quiet and then allow other Southerners take turn of South-East. If you meant well for the South-East, you could have discouraged other aspirants against running for president.

“Nothing stops the South supporting only presidential aspirants from the South-East.

“The betrayers are those who don’t care about South-East. We are wiser,’’ Kalu said.

The former governor of Abia further told Clark that majority of the Southerners in his party, the Peoples Democratic Party were secretly supporting a North Easterner to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The welfare of my people is a passion that is driving me, I am not doing anything to advance my personal interest or seek personal glorification.

“I also lost my businesses fighting for the political interest of the Igbos. I cannot betray them now if I didn’t do it yesterday,’’ Kalu said.

Edwin Clarke Endorses VP Osinbajo, knocks Tinubu

Leader of Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Edwin Clark, on Thursday, cautioned Bola Tinubu, an All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential aspirant against contesting in 2023.

Clark said Tinubu should go and rest despite coming from the most sophisticated region of Nigeria.

Featuring on Arise TV, the elder statesman said he would rather vote for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to become Nigeria’s next President.

Clark described Osinbajo as an intelligent man who has what it takes to rule Nigeria in 2023.

According to Clark: “I’m not aware of Jonathan running for presidency. I’m a father to him and he has not informed me about such intentions.

“The southwest is the most educated and sophisticated people in Nigeria, but Tinubu should go and rest. Other than the Igbos, I would vote for the Vice President; he is an intelligent fellow.

“How many times have we heard Tinubu talking about the affairs of this nation or criticizing those in power?”

Tinubu had recently announced his intention to contest for president in 2023.

The former governor of Lagos State had informed President Muhammadu Buhari that his decision to run for the presidency was a lifelong aspiration.

Similarly, reports had it that Osinbajo would soon make his intention known.

However, the Vice President denied such reports.

  • 2023: I will support Saraki’s presidential ambition only if… – Edwin Clark

    2023: I will support Saraki’s presidential ambition only if… – Edwin Clark

Leader of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark, has stated his reasons why he would support Bukola Saraki ahead of 2023 elections.

Clark vowed to support Saraki’s presidential ambition if the Southern part of the country fails to produce a consensus candidate.

He spoke when the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Contact and Advocacy Council, visited him in Abuja yesterday.

The PANDEF leader described the former Senate President as “the best for Nigeria.”

He commended Saraki for his sterling performance as a Senate President in the 8th Senate.

“We have been agitating for the presidency to be zoned to the south. However, if we fail to come up with a consensus candidate in the South, I will have no option but to support Dr Bukola Saraki,” Clark declared.

Recall that the former Kwara State Governor, last week hinted at joining the 2023 presidential race.
