Forget foreign coach, retain Eguavoen – Adepoju tells NFF

Former Nigerian international, Mutiu Adepoju has backed Augustine Eguavoen to remain the coach of the Super Eagles.

Following the sacking of Gernot Rohr, Eguavoen was appointed to take the Eagles to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021) in Cameroon.

The team did well in the group stage but crashed out against Tunisia in the round of 16.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) already lined up Portuguese, Jose Peseiro, to take charge of the team on a permanent basis.

But Adepoju believes that Eguavoen is up to the task.

“I don’t have an issue with a foreign coach for the Super Eagles, but I think we have capable hands at home,” he is quoted to have said.

“Eguavoen did well considering the timing, he can build on this. It’s not my decision to make, it’s the NFF. But if you ask me, I will retain Eguavoen.”

In March, Nigeria will play Ghana over two legs for a place at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. The NFF is expected to announce a permanent manager soon

  • Why I took over from Gernot Rohr – Eguavoen

Why I took over from Gernot Rohr – Eguavoen

Augustine Eguavoen has explained why he was appointed Super Eagles interim coach after Gernot Rohr was sacked in November.

Rohr was dismissed after five years in charge of the Nigeria national team, weeks before the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations kicked off in Cameroon.

Eguavoen, speaking with BBC Sport Africa, said as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director, he had to step in before a permanent boss is hired.

“Our former coach was relieved of his duties and it was just weeks before the Africa Cup of Nations.

“As technical director, anywhere in the world that is what is obtainable. If there is a vacancy, it is the technical director that steps in before the coach has been appointed.

“So that’s why you see me taking this role and an interim man,” he said.

The NFF announced Jose Peseiro as the next head coach of the Eagles before AFCON 2021.

AFCON: Austin Eguavoen hits back at Tunisian coach

Austin Eguavoen has responded to the Tunisian coach’s comment where he said the Super Eagles were predictable going into their round of 16 battle at the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

After overcoming the Super Eagles 1-0 in the highly contested match, the Tunisian gaffer told his press conference that Nigeria was predictable.

He boasted that his team nullified Nigeria’s threat by clipping the wings of their wingers, especially Moses Simon.

In response, however, Eguavoen said that Nigeria made efforts and created chances to beat Tunisia even with ten men after Alex Iwobi was sent off.

“When you talk about the Tunisian coach talking about the team being predictable, that’s not 100% correct,” Eguavoen told the press.

“Our wing play is our strength but the only thing is that we have to vary it, we tried to play through the middle which means open up the field and play from the sides, then the ball must come in Awoniyi’s feet or Iheanacho’s feet but it wasn’t coming.

“Why? Because they had a lot of midfield players who tried to block the line of pass.

“We are not a team who want to play long ones behind defenders who possess the ball very well.

“Even at that half chances were being created and towards the end of the game playing with ten we could have equalised and won the game.”

  • I believe Super Eagles, Eguavoen can deliver AFCON title – Chukwu

I believe Super Eagles, Eguavoen can deliver AFCON title – Chukwu

Former Super Eagles’ head coach Christian Chukwu says he strongly believes the team’s players and coaches can excel at the ongoing 33rd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

Chukwu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday that he believes the Super Eagles possess the ability to deliver and record impressive results at the event.

“I believe also in the now age-long experience of Austin Eguavoen to deliver, alongside his colleagues in the technical crew.

“He has got lots of experience as a former player and former national coach of the Super Eagles. His coming back a second time as a national coach is definitely a blessing to the country,” he said.

Chukwu pointed out that Eguavoen’s experience as a coach would help in bringing out the best in the players, whom he described as a good bunch.

He said Nigerians are happy at the team’s impressive performance at the competition’s group stage, adding “the Super Eagles have shown the world that we have the quality to simply be the best”.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles have moved past the group stage of the 2021 AFCON, after winning their three matches in Group D to pick the maximum nine points.

The national senior men’s football team defeated their Egyptian opponents 1-0, before beating their Sudanese counterparts 3–1 and then Guinea-Bissau 2-0.

They are staying on in Garoua, after emerging group leaders, to play their Round of 16 match on Sunday.

Chukwu who captained the team when they were known as the Green Eagles urged Nigerians from all walks of life to continue to pray for the team’s success.

“It is time we step up the support as this is the crucial stage of the competition.

“Personally, I want all Nigerians to rally round the national team with prayers and motivating words.

“They (the team) have done well at the group stage and they should maintain the tempo, even surpass it and move more forward at this knock-out stage,” he said.

The former centre-back who led the Green Eagles to Nigeria’s first title win in 1980 then urged the Super Eagles to stay focused on their target.

”That target is to win the title for Nigeria a fourth time.

“Super Eagles players should know that the lasting legacy they will leave for their children is to be continental champions.

“That is something many people will make historical reference to in the future,” Chukwu who assisted Clemens Westerhof to win Nigeria’s second title in 1994 added.

  • AFCON: Super Eagles’ll not take foot off pedal against Guinea-Bissau – Eguavoen

AFCON: Super Eagles’ll not take foot off pedal against Guinea-Bissau – Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has assured of his players’ total commitment as they file out against Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

Eguavoen gave the assurance on Tuesday in Garoua, Cameroon at a press conference ahead of the team’s last Group D match.

The Nigerian national team currently sit top group D with six points from two games, having beaten Egypt and Sudan.

Struggling Guinea-Bissau have just one point from their draw with Sudan and 0-1 loss to Egypt.

Eguavoen said that despite qualification, the aim of the team was to finish with nine points like the Eagles did in the 2006 AFCON in Egypt, when he was incidentally in charge.

“There is always pressure, finishing with nine points will be very good; we did that in 2006 and with this group that we have, we are ready to do that again.

“It is not expected that the game will be smooth for 90 minutes, our major concern is conversion, we have worked on that and we hope to see improvements,” Eguavoen said.

The coach said with qualification in the bag, the technical crew would bring some changes to give more fringe players game time.

” It is always good to qualify, we have done that with style; expect few changes tomorrow (Wednesday), everyone have come to play. We will make one or two changes,” he said.

On the controversy whether to employ a local or foreign coach for the Super Eagles going forward, he said the focus should not be on the skin colour of the coach but the team’s style of play.

“This question has come many many times but I’m very happy with the position I occupy with the Nigeria Football Federation and yes, if they give me the job, why not.

“If they asked me for it, yes and when we get to that river we will cross,” he said.

Earlier, Super Eagles vice captain, William Trost-Ekong, said the team would still approach the game with the same zeal it prosecuted the first two matches.

“We are approaching the game as the first two, we have enjoyed Garoua, the team will work hard, this is an opportunity to test ourselves and play a good game,” he said.

NAN reports that the Nigeria/Guinea-Bissau match is billed to take place at the Stade Roumdé Adjia, Garoua, Cameroon on Wednesday by 8 p.m.

  • AFCON: Why I haven’t played some Super Eagles players – Eguavoen

AFCON: Why I haven’t played some Super Eagles players – Eguavoen

Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen has revealed why he has not fielded some of the players in the Super Eagles squad for the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have played two matches so far, securing wins against two North African sides, a 1-0 defeat of Egypt and 3-1 thumping of Sudan on Saturday.

And having secured a place in the round of 16, Eguavoen hinted at providing the opportunity for some fringe players in his squad to play.

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner explained that he deliberately left some of the players out of the first two games because he wanted to avoid taking risks.

He also pointed out that some players were new to the squad while others, such as fullbacks, Tyronne Ebuehi and Jamilu Collins, arrived late to camp.

Addressing reporters after the Super Eagles’ win over Sudan, Eguavoen was asked if he intends to make changes to the starting lineup.

“You are already giving a lineup which is good. I have been long enough with this team, as a technical director from afar but this is the closest I have been with this team, which is about three weeks now,” he said.

“We actually started with quite a number of players, to be precise 24 on the fourth of January and on the fifth we flew out.

“On arrival here, nothing happened because we retired to bed at about 2 am and then preparation started on the sixth, and on the 11th we are to be on the field, so that was why when you see the lineup in this first two games it’s a little bit difficult to take risks.

“It’s better to play with people that know themselves so that was why we maintained what we had up to this point in time.

“We made it clear to all the players that everybody that has come here has a chance to play.

“Now coming to the next game with qualification secured, with a win on our mind as well I think we’ll give a couple of players the opportunity to play “

  • AFCON: Super Eagles will play Sudan with utmost respect – Eguavoen

AFCON: Super Eagles will play Sudan with utmost respect – Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen said his team would play Sudan’s Falcons of Jediane in their second group game of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with utmost respect.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria would take on Sudan in their second Group D game of the AFCON, at the Stade Roumdé Adjia in Garoua on Saturday.

Eguavoen told newsmen during the pre-match conference on Friday that the Sudanese were not pushovers and would be treated as such, adding that consolidating on the victory against Egypt, was the ultimate goal.

“I cannot look down on anybody, if you do that, you will be making a very big mistake.

“So, the Sudanese team will not be an exception. We will approach them the same way we did against Egypt.

“They are a respected side and not a weak side at all. We will play them with utmost respect.

“Every game comes with a different plan. Sudan are not pushovers and more so, they are on one point and we have three points.

“We want to consolidate on that, while they will be pushing harder to have a chance to qualify,” he said.

On the tactics he would deploy against the Sudanese, the coach was rather subtle in his response, saying that he expected his opponents to raise their game and his team, to respond accordingly.

“We have discussed as a background room staff and the entire team together.

“As we studied Egypt, the truth is that it is never going to be perfect, but there will always be loopholes and the ability to read the game and get a good result matters,” he said.

The gaffer showered praises on his team, adding that the difference between the present Super Eagles and the former, was about the freedom the boys now had to express themselves.

“The boys deserve alot of credit and praises, because when an instruction is given, they carry it out to the latter and they don’t need too much reminders.

“So that makes it a little bit easier, for me and the coaching crew.

“We haven’t actually done anything differently. It is the same personnel, but it is just about the freedom.

“Feeling free to express themselves and they see me as their father, brother and friend.

“Confide in me but don’t take advantage of me being too gentle and everyone understands that, including the players and of course, the backroom staff,” he said.

On the hype of the Super Eagles being favourite to win the AFCON title, Eguavoen noted that it was too early to draw such conclusions.

“It is hard to say, because it is a marathon. It is only the first game and like you all know Egypt are seven-time African champions.

“They are not pushovers. They are a very strong team and whoever thinks that Egypt are not a strong side, he or she is making a big mistake.

“Yes, we were able to neutralise them, we were lucky at some point as well. We played very well which is very good, credit to all the players.

“But to talk about being favourites now, I think will be too early.

“We are going to look at the next game and approach it with all seriousness and alot of respect as well and after crossing that hurdle, we will then look toward the next game,” he said.

Egypt who currently sit at the bottom of Group D table with no point, would be looking for redemption, when they take on Guinea Bissau from 8.00 p. m.

  • Super Eagles players chose the formation in Egypt win – Eguavoen

Super Eagles players chose the formation in Egypt win – Eguavoen

Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has said the players themselves decided on the 4-2-3-1 formation which he used to successfully execute the 1-0 win over Egypt in their Group D encounter in the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles are used to the formation, as it was consistently deployed by the sacked manager, Gernot Rohr.

Desperation, however, led Rohr to change the formation to 3-5-2 during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

“It is still the same personnel but I think what we did was I brought the boys together and asked them the formation they are comfortable with because we want to be flexible,” the 1994 AFCON winner told NFF TV.

“I wanted to change but they said this is what we’ve been used to for the past few years so I took it and went to work on it so I improved them on that formation.”

Nigeria’s next game in the ongoing 24-team competition in Cameroon is against Sudan.

A win would mean that the West African giants have qualified for the Round of 16 with a game to spare.

  • AFCON: Super Eagles, good blend of youth, experience says Eguavoen

AFCON: Super Eagles, good blend of youth, experience says Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim Head Coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has described his team as a good blend of youth and experience ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

Eguavoen made the remarks after the team’s first training session at the main bowl of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Sunday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zaidu Sanusi of FC Porto, Portugal who arrived the team’s camp brought the number of arrivals to 12 players who participated in the team’s first training session.

The coach, who said that the players were being put through their paces, expressed delight with their performances, adding that he saw a lot of energy and speed in the team.

“I am very impressed with what I’ve seen today. The team is a good blend of both the young and experienced players.

“A majority of the players that made the 28-man list and who participated in the team’s first training session today are quite young.

“So, there is a lot of energy, there’s a lot of speed and that’s exactly what you need in the game of modern day football,” he said.

The gaffer noted that his goal and focus was to ensure the total commitment of the boys as well as their ability to play according to instruction and his pattern of play.

“I expect 100 per cent commitment from the boys and have explained to them the way I want them to play.

“So the next job for me now is to see how they apply their skills and abilities during our training sessions and see those who best fit into the various positions and the way we want to play,” he said.

The coach also expressed his disappointment over the absence of some key players in the squad, noting that their non-availability was painful.

He also said that there was nothing anybody could do about the situation.

“I was in constant touch with Emmanuel Dennis and he indeed made a lot of efforts, but his club (Watford FC) refused to release him and unfortunately, there is nothing anyone can do about the situation.

“As for Victor Osimhen, we all know how eager he wanted to play for his country. He is very committed and a true professional.

“However, we have to always consider the health of the player first. In as much as we want to win the Cup, I think his health is more important.

“He has assured us that even though he will not be with us physically at the tournament, but his spirit will be with us and we believe that.

“Having said that, I am in touch with the rest of the squad and can confirm to you that they will all be available latest by tomorrow (Monday) evening,” he said.

NAN also reports that the Super Eagles will have two more training sessions before flying out of the country on Wednesday to their camp in Garoua, Cameroon.

No fewer than 16 more players are still being expected in the Super Eagles’ camp at the Bolton White Hotel ahead of the 2021 AFCON scheduled to kick off on Jan. 9 and end on Feb. 6.

The group stage will see Nigeria in Group D taking on Egypt on Jan. 11, Sudan on Jan. 15 and Guinea Bissau on Jan. 19.

All three matches will take place at the Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

  • AFCON: I’m bothered about Super Eagles team – Eguavoen

AFCON: I’m bothered about Super Eagles team – Eguavoen

Interim coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen has admitted he is bothered because a majority of European clubs don’t want to release players for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, on time.

Recall that some managers of top European clubs with African players have criticized the timing of AFCON, with the fourth wave of COVID-19 creating more fears.

Eguavoen, who replaced Gernot Rohr as coach of Nigeria national team, said he is worried because he has a list and if he doesn’t release it, then it will be difficult for him to put a team together before the AFCON kick-offs on January 9.

Nigeria is in Group D alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.

Asked to comment on the issue of European clubs not wanting to release players for AFCON and if it bothers him, Eguavoen told NFF TV: “Yes, of course, everyone should be bothered because there is a list out there and if you don’t release the majority how do you put a team together.

“I remember in 2011 just before the Olympic games London 2012, we won all the games, blowing teams up 5-1 like that and 95 percent of the players were from Europe, players like Nosa Igiebor, Nnamdi Oduamadi.

“But when it was time to go to Morocco (for the U-23 AFCON) out of the players who featured during the qualifiers for the U-23 AFCON, I only got like five of them, so it was a problem. So if European clubs are now saying we can’t release them, it will be a problem and to put another team together at this time would be tough.”

Recall that Eguavoen released a 28-man provisional list for the 2021 AFCON a few days ago.
