Mostafa Mohammed of Egypt converted a last minute penalty in the first half to equalize for the North Africans after Meschak Elia’s header put the Congolese ahead earlier in the encounter.

All efforts by both sides to score in the game proved abortive even with the additional 30 minutes extra time.

The encounter was later decided on Penalties.

Abou Gabal missed the vital kick in the shootout before his opposite number, Lionel Mpasi netted the winner to the delight of the DRC travelling fans.

10-man Egypt suffered a shock first defeat to DR Congo at AFCON as they crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The result meant that Guinea who earlier on Sunday afternoon defeated Equatorial Guinea will slug it out against the DR Congo in the second quarter -final fixture on Friday February 2nd.

Egypt sneaked into the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on a night of crazy drama in Group B.

There were four injury-time goals across the two Group B games, with Mozambique scoring twice to draw 2-2 with Ghana.
Results from both centers  meant a draw was enough for Egypt to finish second and qualify – but many of their players didn’t know the Ghana score and were devated when Cape Verde equalized in the 99th minute.
Both Egypt and Cape Verde anxiously await their round of i6 opponents today, while the Black stars of Ghana will have to wait to know if they will go through as one of the best third best place teams in the tournament.

AFCON 2023: Egypt, Ghana draw in thrilling clash

The Pharaohs of Egypt and the Black Stars of Ghana on Thursday in Abidjan played to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

West Ham United star, Mohammed Kudus scored a brace on his return from injury.

Ghana went ahead twice, late in the first half and in the second half but we’re pegged back twice after individual errors by Iñaki Williams and Osman Bukari late in the second half

The game was played in front of 20,808 at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.

Kudus, just back from injury dazzled with his all round play wriggling away from Mohamed ELneny, and Mohamed Fathy outside the Egypt box before firing home a long range shot from a Salid Abdul Samed pass.

The goal came in the third minute of added time in the first half and barely a minute after Liverpool star winger Mohamed Salah went off through injury.

How Super Cup ended with 34 penalty kicks

It took 34 penalty kicks before Modern Future football club finally beat Pyramids FC 14-13 in a nerve-shredding shootout in the Egyptian Super Cup semi-finals on Monday.

This was after the contest had ended in a 0-0 draw.

Modern Future, who will face either Al Ahly or Ceramica Cleopatra in the final match, squandered three spot kicks.

Pyramids lost the match after missing a fourth penalty kick at Abu Dhabi’s Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.

Pyramids defender Osama Galal wasted two penalty kicks, including the decisive one that sealed victory for Modern Future.

Even though at times it felt that the shootout was never ending, it was well short of the 54 penalty kicks taken when Washington FC beat Bedlington Terriers 25-24 last year.

That was in a local cup match in England.

A 2005 Namibian Cup match between KK Palace and Civics featured 48 penalty kicks.

  • Egypt seeks to broker Gaza ceasefire as Hamas, Israel assert demands

Egypt seeks to broker Gaza ceasefire as Hamas, Israel assert demands

The U.S. said “very serious” negotiations were taking place on a new Gaza ceasefire and release of more Israeli hostages.

Prospects for a deal remained uncertain as Hamas insisted it would not discuss anything less than a complete end to Israel’s offensive in the Palestinian enclave.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh visited Egypt on Wednesday for the first time in more than a month for discussions with Egyptian officials who are seeking to mediate another truce.

A source briefed on the negotiations said envoys were intensively discussing which of the hostages still held by Palestinian Islamist militants in Gaza could be freed in a new truce and which Palestinian prisoners Israel might release in return.

Islamic Jihad, a smaller Palestinian militant group that is also holding hostages in Gaza, said its leader would visit Egypt in the coming days as well to discuss a possible end to the conflict.

“These are very serious discussions and negotiations, and we hope that they lead somewhere,” White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday.

But Taher Al-Nono, Haniyeh’s media adviser, told Reuters that Hamas was not willing to discuss releasing more Israeli hostages until Israel ends its military campaign in Gaza and the volume of humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians increases.

“The issue of prisoners can be negotiated after these two matters are achieved.

“We cannot talk about negotiations while Israel continues its aggression.

“Discussing any proposal related to prisoners must occur after the cessation of aggression,” Nono said in an interview in Cairo.

Hamas rejects any further temporary pause in Israel’s military campaign and says it will discuss only a permanent ceasefire.

“We have talked with our brothers in Egypt, outlining our stance on this aggression and the urgent need to stop it as a top priority,” Nono said.

Israel has insisted all remaining women and infirm men among the hostages be released, the source briefed on the negotiations said, declining to be identified.

Palestinians convicted of serious offences could be on the list of prisoners to be freed by Israel.

Now more than 10 weeks old, Israel launched its campaign in the Gaza Strip to annihilate Hamas after its fighters raided Israel on Oct. 7.

They took some 240 hostages and killed 1,200 people, according to Israel.

Since then, Israel has waged a massive ground and air assault on the seaside enclave. Nearly 20,000 deaths have been confirmed by the Gazan health ministry, with several thousand more bodies believed to be trapped under rubble.

International aid groups say Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been driven to the brink of catastrophe by wholesale destruction that has driven 90 per cent of them from their homes and left many malnourished and gravely short of clean water and medical care.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday said he did not expect a second Israel-Hamas hostage release deal to be struck soon, though he added in remarks to reporters: “We’re pushing.”

Haniyeh’s visit to Egypt was a rare personal intervention in diplomacy, something he has done in the past only when progress seemed likely.

He last travelled to Egypt in early November before the announcement of the only ceasefire in the Gaza war so far, a week-long pause that saw the release of about 110 of Hamas’ hostages.

Israel has not commented publicly on the talks in Egypt. But it has ruled out a permanent ceasefire and says it will only agree to limited humanitarian pauses until Hamas is defeated.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated on Wednesday that the war would end only with Hamas eradicated, all hostages freed and Gaza posing no more threat to Israel.

“Whoever thinks we will stop is detached from reality…All Hamas terrorists, from the first to the last, are dead men walking,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The U.S., Israel’s closest ally, has stepped up calls in the past week for it to scale down its all-out war into a focused campaign against Hamas leaders and end what Biden has called “indiscriminate bombing” causing huge civilian casualties.

In a serious spillover from the war, Yemen’s Houthi forces have been firing missiles and drones at commercial shipping in the Red Sea to underline support from Iran’s Arab militia proxies for the Palestinians against Israel, and the U.S. this week set up a multinational force to ward off the attacks.

On Wednesday, the Houthis’ leader warned they would strike U.S. warships if their forces were targeted by Washington.

The United Nations Security Council was due to vote on Thursday on a bid to boost aid to the Gaza Strip after a delay at the request of the U.S., diplomats said.

Aid into Gaza has gradually increased in recent days after the opening of a second crossing into the enclave.

On Wednesday, Cyprus and Israel said they were exploring opening a sea route to bring more aid in, though no final agreement was reached.

  • Egypt’s president, Sisi re-elected for third term

Egypt’s president, Sisi re-elected for third term

The President of Egypt, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has has won his re-election for a third term with 89.6% of the vote, the electoral commission has announced.

Sisi defeated three other candidates with the runner-up finishing a distant second with only 4.5%. of the votes.

Recall that leading opposition candidate, Ahmed Tantawy had pulled out months before last week’s poll, claiming intimidation and violence against his campaign camp.

Egypt’s faltering economy and the war in Gaza were key electoral issues.

Mr Sisi, who is 69, first became president in 2014, a year after he had led the military’s overthrow of his Islamist predecessor Mohammed Morsi.

Mr Sisi won again in 2018. The victory in the latest election means he will be in power until 2030, when he is barred by the constitution from running again.

Under his leadership, huge sums of money have been spent on big infrastructure projects.

Roads have been expanded and flyovers built, and a new capital costing billions of dollars has been constructed near Cairo but is barely inhabited.

Critics say this has drained much of the country’s economic resources and created unprecedented levels of debt that have crippled the economy.

Egypt’s parliament extended presidential terms from four to six years. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was also allowed to run for third term in next election in 2024.

28 premature babies transferred to Egypt from Gaza

Twenty-eight premature babies have been transferred to Egypt from the Gaza Strip to be taken to hospitals in Cairo and North Sinai.

Al-Qahera News television reported that the Palestinian Red Crescent said ambulances departed on Monday from Gaza’s Emirati Hospital carrying 28 premature infants to the Rafah crossing.

Minister of Health Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar oversaw the process in footage on Al-Qahera News that showed each baby transferred into an incubator, and then into an Egyptian ambulance.

Earlier, 31 premature infants were taken from the besieged al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza and to the Emirati hospital in the southern part of the enclave, after two babies died before the evacuation.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), doctors in Gaza said all the babies are fighting serious infections due to a lack of medical supplies and several were in critical condition.

None of the infants were accompanied by relatives, as the Palestinian Ministry of Health could not find close family members, WHO added.
