He however stressed that even though they managed to reach the final, they are yet to achieve their final goal.

“Each time, the Egyptian team are always favourites to win the tournament. Tonight we played the usual game and we managed to reach the final.

“I will like to thank our coach Carlos Queiroz who was expelled during the game as well as all the players who made the difference with their ardor and grinta throughout the tournament.

“We are happy, it’s true, but we have not yet reached the final objective: the coronation,” he said.

Elsayed also praised their talisman Salah for his contribution to the success of the team thus far.

“A very essential player in our team and who remains the centerpiece for us,” he said.

Also, Man-of-the Match, Mohamed Abdelmoneim praised Salah for his support to the team, adding that he made the difference in a difficult match against a strong Cameroon side.

“It was a good match for us.

“A difficult match against a good Cameroonian team but our team knew how to make the difference with a Mohamed Salah who supported us throughout the match like a great leader.

AFCON: We’re sad but lost to a better team, says Cameroon coach

Cameroon national team manager Antonio Conceiçao has expressed sadness at his team’s failure to reach the finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), admitting however that his team lost to a better side.

Hosts Cameroon were knocked out of the 2021 AFCON tournament after losing 1-3 to Egypt in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time in the semifinals on Thursday in Yaounde.

Conceiçao speaking at a post-match press conference rued his team’s missed chances at goal, adding that the Egyptians exploited their weaknesses.

“The team played well during the 90 minutes trying to score goals but we didn’t succeed.

“We are as sad as the 27 million Cameroonians, but I think the Egyptian team knew how to counter us.

“We’re sad but it’s the reality,” he said.

He noted that his boys lost steam after a very intense first half and failed to conserve their energy for the later part of the game.

“The players felt some signs of fatigue at the end of the match, especially after a very physical and intense first half.

“We had tried to save our energy to counter the opponent but in vain.”

The hosts saw their hopes of AFCON glory and a sixth title on home soil ended in cruel fashion.

The defeat comes as a major blow to the hosts, whose troubled tournament was overshadowed by the stadium crush that led to eight deaths last week.

However, they must still get through a third-place play-off against Burkina Faso on Saturday as they seek to end their campaign on a high.

We want to offer the world very pleasant match, says Egypt’s coach

Egypt coach, Carlos Queiroz, says the goal of his team is to offer the world a pleasant match when they face hosts Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semifinals.

The Pharoahs of Egypt will be seeking a place in the 2021 AFCON final when they lock horns with hosts Cameroon at the Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé on Thursday.

There are no teams that have won AFCON titles more than Cameroon and Egypt.

Between them they have lifted the holy grail of African Football 12 times, seven for the Pharaohs and five for the Indomitable Lions.

Queiroz, speaking at a pre-match press conference in Yaounde, said his team was ready to play a very good match between two great African teams.

“To reach the semifinals is a reward for us. Facing hosts Cameroon is tough as they play very good football.

“We want to offer the world a pleasant match between two great African teams.

“We are ready for this semifinal. It is true that we have played two consecutive matches with extra-time, but we remain ready to play a very good match.

“We have the right team for this kind of games,” he said.

Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shennawy noted that the game against the host was very crucial, adding that he was hopeful that their talisman Mohamed Salah would be at his best ahead of the clash.

“It’s a very important match for us against hosts Cameroon; we want to go as far as possible and try to win the title.

“Our objective since the start was to win the tournament.

“We have one of the best players in the world, Salah, and I hope he will give what we expect from him,” he said.

After a sluggish group stage campaign, Egypt rose to the expectations to oust Cote d’Ivoire and Morocco and reach the semifinals in style.

Now they have to face another tough hurdle in the form of their hosts.

The Pharaohs will look up again to their star captain Salah, who has already scored twice in the tournament, and assisted the winner in the quarterfinals against Morocco.

Minister decries $35,000 Business Registration for Nigerians in Egypt

Alhaji Lai Mohammed has decried the 35,000 U.S. dollars (about N19.2 million) deposit being requested by Egyptian Authority from foreigners including Nigerians to operate a business enterprise in that country.

Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture described the condition as unacceptable during a meeting with the Nigerian community in Cairo.

Newsmen reports that the meeting was on the sideline of a bilateral discussion with Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) on how Nigeria can access funding to support its growing creative industry.

Newsmen reports that Mohammed had led some private sector stakeholders involved in Digital Switch Over (DSO) to Afreximbank to assist them on how they can source funds to complete the wholly private sector financially driven project.

Speaking at the meeting organised by the Nigerian Ambassador to Egypt, Malam Nura Rimi, the minister said such a condition negates the unity that bound African countries together.

He, therefore, promised to take the matter up with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema and other relevant bodies upon his return to Nigeria.

The minister also decries the high number of Nigerian children out of school in Egypt owing to the language barrier and non-availability of registered Nigerian schools in Cairo.

The Nigerian community had told the minister that the official language for teaching in Egypt is Arabic and the few private schools being run by the British and America in that country were exorbitant.

They said no fewer than 7,000 Nigerian children in Egypt were out of school and therefore appealed for the construction of a Nigerian school in Cairo.

They also told the minister that because many of them could not afford the mandatory 35,000 dollars deposit, their businesses had been labelled illegal while they were subjected to regular harassment and arrest by Egyptian security officials.

Meanwhile, the minister has appealed to the Nigerian community in Egypt to disregard most of the negative news about Nigeria, especially on social media.

According to him, most of the news being received abroad about Nigeria are fake news, the country is at peace and the people are living harmoniously.

“There is no country without its challenges, we are facing our own just like Egypt did some. Years back and they are out of it now.

“In Nigeria, we have the challenge of banditry, Boko Haram, and militants but that does not mean that Nigeria is at war.

“Nigeria in the last six years has been making tremendous developmental progress in infrastructure development, agriculture, aviation and other fields of endeavour.

“Unfortunately, the noise of the mischief-makers have drowned the laudable success of the administration

“I want to assure every one of you here that whatever problem we have in Nigeria has nothing to do with religion or ethnicity,” he said.

The minister stressed that in spite of the security and economic challenges that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was facing, it recorded tremendous achievements in many areas.

He listed some of the giant strides of the administration in roads, bridges, rail infrastructure as well as in agriculture, particularly self-sufficiency in rice.

Newsmen reports that some of the people who responded to the minister’s speech expressed happiness particularly on the rail project and the second Niger bridge which the minister said had reached 78 per cent completion.

Newsmen reports that the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Paulen Talen also made a presentation at the event.

AFCON: Egypt defeat Ivory Coast on penalties

Egypt defeat Ivory Coast 5-4 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon following a 0-0 draw.

The North Africans got the upper hand in the shoot-out when substitute keeper Gabaski saved Eric Bailly’s effort in the third round of spot-kicks.

And Pharaohs captain Mohamed Salah netted the decisive penalty to send the record seven-time champions through.

Egypt will face Morocco in the last eight in Yaounde on Sunday.

The finale was somewhat harsh on Manchester United defender Bailly, who had performed superbly at the back while sporting a rugby scrum cap on his return from a head injury.

Yet he took a short run-up for his penalty and placed his effort too close to Gabaski, who dived to his right and stuck out his left hand to push the ball onto the bar.

The Zamalek keeper had come on right at the end of the second half after Mohamed El Shenawy picked up a leg injury, and may well start against Morocco depending on the extent of the injury suffered by Egypt’s number one.

  • AFCON: Game against Egypt, my best match ever, says Simon

AFCON: Game against Egypt, my best match ever, says Simon

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon on Friday said Nigeria’s opening match in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Egypt was his best game ever.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria defeated their Egyptian counterparts 1-0 in their AFCON Group D clash in Garoua, Cameroon.

The Super Eagles had their last training session at the practice pitch of the Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua on Friday before their second group D game against Sudan on Saturday.

Simon while fielding questions from newsmen on Friday said the style and tactics of Coach Eguavoen had impacted positively and improved his game greatly.

“The game against Egypt was one of my best games in the past two years.

“You know we changed our coach and of course, we changed tactics. So, every coach has his own mentality and how he impacts the players.

“With the previous one, I played based on his own instructions and with the current coach, he gives me the freedom to bring what you have in your club.

“So, I believe that has helped me and my teammates alot,”he said.

On missing missing many chances in the game against Egypt, Simon said he wasn’t perfect and was still a work in progress.

“We are working on it with the coach. Of course, we are not perfect.

“The likes of Emmanuel Amuneke and others are legends in the game and we watched them play live on television. So, we learn from them.

“I am not Messi or Ronaldo, everyone makes mistakes and everyone tries to improve.

“We are trying to improve in our game everyday,”he said.

Super Eagles players chose the formation in Egypt win – Eguavoen

Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has said the players themselves decided on the 4-2-3-1 formation which he used to successfully execute the 1-0 win over Egypt in their Group D encounter in the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles are used to the formation, as it was consistently deployed by the sacked manager, Gernot Rohr.

Desperation, however, led Rohr to change the formation to 3-5-2 during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

“It is still the same personnel but I think what we did was I brought the boys together and asked them the formation they are comfortable with because we want to be flexible,” the 1994 AFCON winner told NFF TV.

“I wanted to change but they said this is what we’ve been used to for the past few years so I took it and went to work on it so I improved them on that formation.”

Nigeria’s next game in the ongoing 24-team competition in Cameroon is against Sudan.

A win would mean that the West African giants have qualified for the Round of 16 with a game to spare.
