Sallah: Obi urges deep respect for rule of law, social justice

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to hold onto the values of social justice, peace and human progress, and to continue to observe deep respect for the nation’s constitution and rule of law.

He described these values as very important for societal progress and development.

Obi made the above call in his Eid-el-Fitr message to Muslims. He noted that the Holy Month of Ramadan was a great opportunity for all to practice restraint, decorum and humility, and that it enjoined Muslim faithful, and by extension Nigerians, to be fair and just in all dealings; to help needy and heal the ailing; to also promote mutual understanding and peace within communities.

He observed that the recently flawed Nigerian general elections have continued to create negative ripples that manifest in various forms of uncertainties through the country.

“Our dear country, Nigeria, the only nation we have, is going through uncertainties related to our recent flawed elections and the activities of fringe elements, who do not respect the rule of law, our Constitution or the wish of our people. They have deployed impunity and exploited weak national institutions to subvert the will of the people,” Obi said.

Obi regretted that he and his running mate, Sen Datti Baba-Ahmed, have continued to come under various forms of attacks from the opposition, which he described as unfair. He, however, maintained that they would remain law-abiding in the journey to reclaiming their mandate.

“It is now common knowledge that perpetrators of state capture and their acolytes continue to attack Datti and I, and indeed, the Labour Party and the Obidient Family, for seeking redress in the court of law to recover our stolen electoral mandate. Efforts to dissuade us from pursuing rightful judicial recourse have included the deployment of fake doctored audio, identity theft, impersonation, trolls and fighting words.

“Many other untoward activities have also been directed at our people and nation but we remain resolute in reclaiming our mandate through all peaceful and legal options under our laws and constitution. We continue to implore all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

“We equally remain in prayers that these challenges will be overcome without adverse shock to the economy, nation & national interest,” he stated.

Calling on Nigerians to remain law-abiding and peaceful in their quest for New Nigeria, Obi added: “In the true spirit of Ramadan, I call on all Nigerians to remain focused on peace and the rule of law. I also wish to assure Nigerians and the Obidients that our struggle to reclaim our mandate is in good stead, and on course. A new Nigeria, that is safe, secure, fair and prosperous for all Nigerians is indeed Possible!”

  • Eid-el-Fitr: Saraki urges muslims to match prayers with actions

Eid-el-Fitr: Saraki urges muslims to match prayers with actions

Former Kwara Governor and the immediate-past President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has urged Muslims across the country to support the numerous prayers with actions.

Saraki said that Muslims should back up prayers made during the holy month of Ramadan concerning the nation, with positive attitudes which are necessary for nation-building.

He said Ramadan symbolizes Allah’s way of teaching humanity the attitude of living a virtuous life, where people keep away from all forms of impurities and experience denial of several forms of comfort.

Saraki made his position known while speaking at an event to mark the completion of this year’s Ramadan fasting and also on Eid-el-Fitri celebration.

This statement was contained in a press release signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, the head of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office.

The statement titled ‘Saraki Greets Muslims, Urges Them to Support Prayers With Positive Attitude.’

The statement reads in part, “While all of us seek to stay away from activities that are injurious to our health, our nation, and our fellow human beings, and seek to live a decent life during the fasting period, we should make this solemn and God-fearing way of life a permanent thing.

“We should all extend the lessons of Ramadan to the way we live with our neighbours.

“We should seek peace at all times, promote tolerance of people who speak different languages with us, and worship God in different ways. We should respect the laws of the land and exhibit discipline at all times.

“Our level of patriotism should increase after Ramadan. That is what this just ended holy month signifies.

“I do not doubt that millions of Nigerian Muslims who just completed their fasting as well as their Christian brothers and sisters who earlier this month completed the Lent period of fasting prayed for Nigeria.

“It is the cumulation of all these prayers that have kept this country going despite all the serious challenges confronting her. I believe God will decisively intervene in the affairs of our country and save her from all the existential threats.

“As the 2023 general election approaches and we gradually commence the process that will lead us to the polls when we will have the opportunity to elect new leaders that will save the country, I pray for genuine guidance from Almighty God for all the citizens of this country, particularly the ones that are of voting age.

“May we choose right and may our choice ultimately lead to the redemption, rebuilding, rededication, development, and fixing of the country.”

  • May Day 2022: Why we celebrate Workers’ Day – NLC President

May Day 2022: Why we celebrate Workers’ Day – NLC President

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba has explained the essence of celebrating May Day or International Workers’ Day on May 1st every year.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mr Wabba as saying the day was set aside for workers to be recognised and appreciated for the fact that they create wealth.

“The essence of the May Day or International Workers Day, is actually a day set aside for workers to be recognised and appreciated for the fact that they create wealth.

“It is the celebration of workers that create wealth, ensure stability and also provide all the services that we need to keep our economy growing and the system going.

“That is from the ordinary farmer to the armed forces, and to the highest of all of them, that are workers,” he said.

Wabba also explained that the day was set aside to create awareness on the lack of security and sacrifices of workers and for the political elites to be reminded of what to be done to be able to secure Nigeria.

He said workers, through their unions, have made a lot of struggles for social justices in the system and in some climes, they must be recognised and appreciated for their contributions in creating wealth in Nigeria.

He, therefore, said the theme of the 2022 May Day, tried to capture the mood of the moment with the theme: “Labour, Politics, the Quest for Good Governance and Development’’.

According to him, this is to capture the mood of the moment, whereas there is a lot of challenges, including the security challenge, confronting Nigerians today from different facets.

“But above all, it is for us to recongise our contributions in creating wealth in Nigeria,” the labour leader stressed.

He called for peace, stability, security and good governance as workers mark this year’s International Workers Day on May 1.

The NLC President on Saturday in Abuja stressed that peace, stability, security and good governance were the constitutional responsibility of the government.

“The constitutional responsibility of every government is about ensuring the peace and security of every citizen. This is what is supposed to occupy our political elite today and it is not about the next circle of elections.

“It should be on how we can ensure that there is peace, stability, security in every facet. I mean in every locality in Nigeria and that has not been the case.

“Therefore, it is a very serious challenge that is why we have to look at the theme of the May Day, to encapsulate all of these challenges that needed answers.

“Importantly, it will require a political solution, with the best of strike and best of protest; you can see that the problems have remained the same,’’ he said.

Announcing the 2022 May Day theme as: “Labour, Politics, the Quest for Good Governance and National Development’’, the NLC president said this would be the focus of this year’s May Day celebration.

He also said that the theme was not all about the forthcoming general elections, rather it should be about the people, good governance and the government that would respond to issues effectively.

Wabba added, clearly speaking, we are still not out of the wood yet, the situation have become even more complicated, there are many challenges in the security spheres and other social vices in the country.

According to him, killings, abduction and kidnapping should be a matter of concern to everybody but right now, all we can only think of is elections, when there are challenges in the peace and stability of the nation.

“In all of these, workers have been on the receiving end, in spite of the insecurity, some of our workers have to frontally engage in the issue of insecurity, such as the police, military and para-military, health workers,‘’ he said.

He added that, in spite of these challenges, their salaries wouldn’t take them home, but yet they are still on the front line.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) felicitated Nigerian workers and people on the commemoration of the 2022 International Workers Day.

This is contained in a statement jointly signed by Mr Ayuba Wabba, the NLC President, and Mr Quadri Olaleye, the TUC President.

According to the statement, the national celebration of this year’s May Day will take place on May 1, by 10 a.m, at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

“The celebration will also hold across all the states of the federation.

“Given the imminence of the Eid-El-Fitr Sallah celebration, the national May Day commemoration will only be shifted to May 2, if the moon is sighted today, being April 30.

“This is to allow our Muslim brothers and sisters observe the Eid prayer,” he said.

It said that the time for the May Day celebration would remain the same.

“We will communicate with workers, our invited guests and the general public once there is a postponement,” the statement said.
