Mmesoma appears before Reps, tenders apology for falsifying JAMB result

Miss Ejikeme Mmesoma, a 19-year-old student from Anambra State, appeared before a House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on alleged Manipulation of Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) result in Abuja on Wednesday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mmesoma presented a letter of apology before the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee, asking for leniency from JAMB for manipulating her 2023 UTME result and dragging the Board to ridicule in the process.

Recall Mmesoma had claimed she scored 362 as against her actual score of 249 in the 2023 UTME JAMB portal.

Mmesoma said she admitted that what she did was wrong, adding that, it was the reason she came to present her letter of apology, titled “Letter of Profound Apology”.

According to her, “I humbly seek your forgiveness for the mistake I made, I sincerely agree that I got the JAMB result from another portal in the course of this, I lambasted JAMB, I apologise.”

She said, “ignorance played a significant role in my action, words cannot describe the depth of pain in my heart. This is the first time I will be doing this, I have never engaged in falsification or any misdemeanor”.

She said it was not in her character to manipulate results and bring public institutions to ridicule, adding that she had embraced genuine repentance.

Mmesoma said she would willingly accept the recommendation of the ad-hoc committee, adding that she had accepted to rectify her mistake and become a better person.

In her words, “I want you to tamper justice with mercy.”

Prof Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar, JAMB, said Mmesoma manipulated her result, aided by the centre where she wrote the exam, adding that the centre had been banned for aiding and abetting fraud.

He said eight centres in Anambra State are currently under investigation over Mmesoma’s case, adding that contrary to insinuations, there was no loophole in JAMB.

He called on the public to be careful in making unfounded statements and have confidence in public institutions, while commending JAMB in its processes and procedure.

According to him, JAMB has introduced innovation that will help to reduce human interference in its operational processes, thereby building confidence in the public.

He said, “Mmesoma’s case was an amateur, there was one falsification by a candidate that I almost went mad.”

Rep. Sanda Soli, the Chairman of the Committee, urged Mmesoma to restitute her ways and not allow such misconduct again.

“You are one of the high scorers, don’t ever think of doing bad things to achieve anything ever again,” he said.

UTME saga: Gov Soludo orders immediate psychological counselling for Mmesoma

Anambra Governor has ordered that Mmesomma Joy Ejikeme, the female student who faked her Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) be handed over to the State Guidance Counselor and Professor of Clinical Psychology.

Soludo, in a letter to Principal of Anglican Girls Secondary School Nnewi where Mmesoma is a student, further directed immediate commencement of psychological counseling and therapy session for Mmesomma, who on Thursday, July 6, 2023 admitted she manipulated the fake results she had been parading.

In the letter signed by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the governor said the directive followed one of the recommendations of the panel constituted to investigate the matter.

“The directive is in line with one of the recommendations of the Committee set up by Anambra State Government to investigate the matter, following the parading of the fake results which elicited interests and generated controversy and misgivings the general public,” the statement added.

[JUST IN] Results manipulation: Anambra panel report has vindicated us – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) declares it has been “vindicated” over its result manipulation allegations levelled against a candidate in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Mmesoma Ejikeme.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this is coming hours after a Committee of Inquiry set up by the Anambra State Government to investigate the claims released its report on Friday night.

The report signed by the Commissioner for Information in Anambra State, Paul Nwosu, and made available to journalists confirmed that Mmesoma admitted to using her phone to inflate her score from 249 to 362.

The Board stated that this had further reinforced its position that its system was not and cannot be compromised.

Having initially come under fire from some quarters for declaring Mmesoma a fraud, JAMB in a statement on Saturday, said it “will not despair in spite of the painful realisation that some Nigerians would do anything to cast aspersions on the good name of the Board.”

The report of the Commission of Inquiry set up by the Anambra State Government, an independent and unbiased body, as demanded by some Nigerians to look into the Mmesoma saga, has vindicated the Board,” the statement said.

“This has further reinforced the position of the Board that its system was not and cannot be compromised. It is to be noted that the Board has built a reputation in terms of the conduct of credible examinations over the years and cannot afford to fail the nation at this critical juncture of its development.

“Therefore, we will not despair in spite of the painful realisation that some Nigerians would do anything to cast aspersions on the good name of the Board. However, in spite of all the posturing of its detractors, the Board remains resolute and uncompromising in its commitment to give Nigeria the best as far as credible and fair assessment is concerned.
In fact, the Board is, more than ever, determined to continue to forge ahead unmindful of the shenanigan of those who desire its fall.”

JAMB appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, who may wish to support and encourage healthy competition by awarding scholarships and other honours to deserving candidates not to be discouraged but should always endeavour to verify from the Board any claim, no matter how innocuous, put forward by candidates.

It also warned candidates to stay away from fraudulent apps that promise to enhance their scores, arguing that the end result would always be anguish and misery.

The Board added that Mmesoma’s case should serve as an eye-opener, especially to those who hold the view that anything goes in Nigeria.

JAMB WILL NOT RELENT IN ITS EFFORTS TO SANITIZE THE NATION’S PUBLIC EXAMINATION SECTOR

“The report of the Commission of Inquiry set up by the Anambra State Government, an independent and unbiased body, as demanded by some Nigerians to look into the Mmesoma saga, has vindicated the Board.

In fact, the Board is, more than ever, determined to continue to forge ahead unmindful of the shenanigan of those who desire its fall.

For the benefit of those who are still doubting the capacity of Ms. Mmesoma to commit this egregious crime and those who are pushing the narrative that the girl is just 16 years old even against all available data that indicate her age as an adult of 19 years, Ms. Mmesoma has owned up to committing the heinous infraction, which was carefully crafted to destroy the very foundation of one of the nation’s agencies charged with the critical role of apportioning the limited educational resource of the nation based on fairness equity and integrity.

It is, therefore, highly regrettable that some Nigerians, who do not believe in the strength and resourcefulness of their nation’s institutions, would latch on to any opportunity to pull the Board down to their level of perfidy.

One vital lesson that Nigerians should learn from the imbroglio, is to learn to appreciate the genuine efforts of their critical national institutions to chart the course of national rebirth.

Hence, this attitude of attacking everything that makes the nation proud even by people who should know better, is disheartening. The flip side of this is to infer that some ethnic jingoists had perhaps been elevated to public office and recognition beyond their mental and emotional capacity.

The Board would continue to be guided by the principles of inclusiveness and fairness as demonstrated by its seamless and unprompted deployment of a dedicated software called the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), which not only eliminates human interference in the admission process, but also engenders equity, fairness, transparency to all as we do not know tribe or religion.

The public is assured of our unwavering commitment to upholding sanctity of the fabric of the nation’s educational system hence our resolve to always deliver credible and fair assessment remains unshaken.

We appeal to all those well-meaning Nigerians, who may wish to support and encourage healthy competition by awarding scholarships and other honours to deserving candidates not to be discouraged but should always endeavour to verify from us any claim, no matter how innocuous, put forward by candidates. Candidates, on their part, are warned to stay away from fraudulent Apps that promise to enhance their scores as the end result would always be anguish and misery.

The Mmesoma case should serve as an eye-opener especially to those who hold the view that anything goes in Nigeria. Ours is a great agency with great potential, which requires everybody’s collective and patriotic support as no nation develops beyond the wishes and trust of its people.

The Board, on its part, will continue to appreciate the unalloyed support of those who even risked being attacked by the social media mob to stand on the side of truth. Your trust in us would never be taken for granted as we also appeal to our detractors to sheathe their swords and be part of the movement to build a greater Nigeria.

To those who have sent apologies after seeing the truth, we call on them to continue to believe in the capacity of the Board to deliver. We commend Anambra State Government for its patriotic and unbiased posture all through the period of the national challenge.

Let us all put our hands together to build the Nigeria of our dreams as we congratulate Miss Umeh Kamsiyochukwu Nkechinyere as the best scorer in the 2023 UTME exercise. Fabian Benjamin, Ph.D. Ag. Director, PAP JAMB.

UTME result: Ezekwesili backs Anambra Cttee report, says Mmesoma needs psychological counselling

A former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has thrown her weight behind one of the recommendations of Anambra Committee report on Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme to undergo psychological counselling session.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) had earlier reported the committee’s findings and recommendations where it was expressly stated that the teenager should undergo a psychological counselling therapy.

While the controversy over Mmesoma’s result was raging with JAMB insisting that she manipulated her result changing her actual score of 249 to 362, Ezekwesili had insisted that a proper investigation into the matter must be carried out.

With the report of the Anambra State panel which was signed by the Commissioner for Information, Paul Nwosu, indicting Mmesoma, the former education minister said she is satisfied with the process which gave the student a fair hearing.

Recall JAMB had withdrawn Mmesoma’s result and consequently barred her from writing the examination for the next three years, sanctions Ezekwesili in a Twitter post on Saturday said she is in support of.

“I have just read the report of the Committee set up by Anambra State Government to investigate and report their independent findings on the Mmesoma and JAMB saga.

“I am satisfied with the process and findings of their investigation which gave Mmesoma a fair hearing to enable the Committee to gather all facts.

“It was necessary to have independent evidence that the result Mmesoma laid claim to publicly was not only fake but that the forgery was personally orchestrated by her.

“There are usually syndicates at the center of perpetration of exam malpractices in Nigeria but it appears not to be so in Mmesoma’s case from the facts of the Committee’s report.

“Mmesoma’s action has consequences. I therefore support the sanctions imposed by JAMB as a deterrent to all who participate in the systemic exam malpractices within our educational system.” Ezekwesili wrote.

[Video] Ejikeme Mmesoma replies JAMB after being accused of forging UTME result

Ejikeme Mmesoma, the Anambra State student has reacted to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) claims of forging her Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result.

Recall that JAMB had accused Ejikeme of using a software to manipulate her score to 362 as against 249.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Mmesoma said that she is not capable of such, and is traumatized by the claim.

According to her, she said: “I am the owner of this result. I went to JAMB portal to print this result and this is what they gave me. This is the result here. This is my aggregate, 362. This is exactly how I downloaded it from that site. So, they (JAMB) now saying I forged my result is what I don’t know; and I’m traumatised that they accused me of forging my own result.

“I am not capable of forging results. This is the evidence. The QR code on the result was scanned and it showed another name, a Yoruba name, Omotola Afolabi, 138. That same person that got 138, they checked again and the person scored 238; meaning that there is problem somewhere.

“We showed this result to the Commissioner of Education, both this one and the SMS they sent to me. So, she snapped it and sent to the JAMB officials. They called back, saying that this was a forged result, that I forged it myself, that the JAMB office doesn’t have a record of this.

“They called the DSS over to come to her office. The DSS took us to their office and we made our statement there. The DSS said they would contact us later, that they are going to investigate this result to know where it came from.

“Instead of them (JAMB) to wait for the investigation to be over, they posted that I forged without confirming. I’m really really sad about it.”

She concluded by stating that she has been a brilliant student from her primary school days and can’t forge results to impress anybody.
