YIAGA, APC, others react to outcome of Ekiti poll

Some stakeholders in Ekiti state on Sunday, expressed divergent opinions on the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in the state which produced Dr Kayode Fayemi as winner.

Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election after securing 197,459 votes, beating his closest opponent, Prof. Kolapo Olusola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who got 178,121 votes.

Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA), Africa (YIAGA) said in a news conference in Ado-Ekiti that accreditation, voting and ballot collation complied with extant regulations, but pointed at some anomalies in the exercise.

Executive Director of the organisation, Mr Samson Itodo, raised concerns about “secrecy of the ballot box”, vote-buying and bribery in the election.

Itodo, however, commended Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the timely commencement of polling and prompt announcement of results.

He also urged Fayemi and APC supporters to be magnanimous in victory

“For those candidates who did not win, we urge them to accept the results because they reflect the votes cast.

“YIAGA Africa calls on all the candidates, all parties and all Nigerians to show political maturity and to maintain the peace,’’ he said.

On its part, the APC leadership in Ekiti described the party’s victory as “well-won and much deserved.’’

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti, Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Jide Awe, thanked the electorate for the massive turnout and “voting conscientiously for the party.’’

The chairman also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and other party leaders for their support in winning the governorship election.

He, however, called for calm and appealed to the opposition parties and their candidates to accept defeat in good faith.

“The APC thanks the Ekiti electorate for voting for the party in the keenly-contested election.

“The Ekiti electorate have voted for the candidate of their choice who they consider as having a proven track record of performance and integrity, and who will bring about the kind of turn-around the state needs at this crucial period,’’ he said.

Awe assured that the governor-elect would be magnanimous in victory and deliver on the expectations of the people.

Mrs Bolanle Olatunde, a former Special Assistant on Diaspora to former former governor of the state, Chief Segun Oni, congratulated the governor-elect and urged him to put the welfare of the people at the heart of his programmes.

She also said Nigerians must learn lessons from the outcome of the elections, especially on the need for “ anyone saddled with the position of authority to do the right thing at the right time.’’

“Even though, there might be claims of inducement here and there, some things I have learnt especially in Ekiti is that as incumbent, you should do the right thing in terms of discharging your duties.

“While people still talk about stomach infrastructure and all that, this can only be sustained if your performance as governor is good and you don’t waste public funds on irrelevant projects.

“Most importantly, be humble, because when you are humble, you will be promoted.

“In these areas, rural people see and appreciate their governor interacting with the common man, but at the same time these people still go to the same market your wife goes to.

“You should set up SMEs, community development initiatives and sustainable development projects that will bring true governance to the people,’’ she said.

The police in the state also said the election was successfully concluded without reports of violence.

The spokesman of the police in the state, Ikechukwu Caleb, told NAN that the election was peaceful and orderly, adding that no arrest was made during the exercise.

NAN reports that the police had deployed 30,000 operatives, two helicopters and 250 patrol vehicles, including Armoured Personnel Carriers, for the election.

The security operation for the poll was supervised by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Operations, Joshiak Habila, assisted by an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, four Commissioners of Police, eight Deputy Commissioners of Police and 18 Assistant Commissioners of Police.

Mr Maxwell Adeleye, a PDP youth leader in Ilogbo-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti, however, described the conduct of the election as “ a show of shame and mockery of all tenets of democracy.’’

He advised the PDP candidate in the election to brace up for the challenges ahead, saying “ the victory of the APC was without jubilation on the streets.’’

Adeleye , however, congratulated the governor-elect on his victory and wished him well in the governance of the state.

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi’s victory, call to higher service, says APC UK

Ekiti 2018: Fayemi’s victory, call to higher service, says APC UK

The United Kingdom chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the victory of Dr Kayode Fayemi in the just-concluded Ekiti state governorship election as “a call to higher service”.

The chapter stated this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, following the announcement of the outcome of the election by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Fayemi was APC’s candidate in the governorship contest held on Saturday.

The statement was jointly signed by Mr Ade Omole the chapter’s leader and Mr Jocab Ogunseye, its spokesman.

The party described Ekiti people as the “wisest for electing a thorough-bred and respected individual” like Fayemi as their governor, adding that they would not be disappointed by the governor-elect.

“We are confident that Fayemi will not disappoint the teeming followers and the general public of the state who have reposed their trust in his ability and experience to provide good governance for the state.

“Fayemi has done it before; he has also worked in the higher level,” it said.

It said that while he served as Minister of Solid Minerals and Steel Development, Fayemi ensured that the moribund Ajaokuta Steal Company was revitalised.

It added that with Fayemi as governor, the people of Ekiti state should anticipate a new era different from the days of “stomach infrastructure”.

The APC chapter stated that the people of Ekiti would now have an era devoid of hooliganism and deceit in governance that had eroded the value of true governance and era that would not celebrate mediocrity.

“There is no doubt, expectations are great, the ceiling has been raised, the altitude is higher, and the people of Ekiti cannot afford to live in darkness as they have done in the past four years,” it said.

It, however, advised the governor-elect to provide an all-inclusive government irrespective of party affiliation “now that the election had been concluded”.

The chapter acknowledged that everyone had played a role in entrenching democracy in the state especially, and must therefore, be valued and respected.

In the result of the election as announced by INEC, Fayemi got 197, 459 votes to defeat his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent and closest, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, who scored 178,121 votes.

  • As #EkitiDecides on Saturday, Gov. Wike reacts to attack on Gov. Fayose

As #EkitiDecides on Saturday, Gov. Wike reacts to attack on Gov. Fayose

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has condemned the brazen attack on Ekiti State by the Nigeria Police, saying that the attack was an affront on the inalienable rights of the people of Ekiti State to a peaceful, free, fair and credible election.

In a press conference on Wednesday night at the Government House Port Harcourt , Governor Wike said that the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose was lucky to escape with his life after he was battered by the policemen on the orders of the Presidency.

He called on Rivers people to be prepared to defend their mandate in 2019 as the Buhari administration will apply the same technique on all the states.

He said: “I therefore join well-meaning Nigerians to condemn this brazen attack on the inalienable rights of the people of Ekiti State to a peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in the strongest possible terms and warn the perpetrators of the grave danger such actions pose to the survival of our democracy.

“I wish to also draw the attention of the people of Rivers State to the fact that what is happening at Ekiti State is clearly a foretaste of what the APC-led Federal Government has planned to unleash in our State and in deed, the entire country, in their desperate attempt to rig 2019 general elections and retain or return to power having performed woefully and lost the support of the generality of Nigerians.

“As a matter of fact, people did not quite believe me when I told the world that the APC-led Federal Government has plans to assassinate me to enable them capture Rivers State because they know they have no electoral foothold in the State.

“Today, the whole world has seen how Governor Ayo Fayose was barely lucky to have escaped the State-sponsored attempt at his life with a fractured hand and bruised face because, with him around, hale and hearty, they will never win the Saturday elections free and fair in Ekiti.

“In the face of these challenges therefore, I wish to call on the people of Rivers State to be prepared to fight and defend their rights to freely and democratically elect their leaders in the 2019 general elections.”

He assured the people of Rivers State that he will never surrender their mandate, saying that he will defend the interest of the state with his life.

He said: ” As your Governor I will never surrender your mandate and abiding interest of our State to our enemies who seek to keep us enslaved and plundered even at the pain of death.

“I wish to commend and congratulate the irrepressible Governor Ayo Fayose and the people of Ekiti State for standing up and standing firm in defence of their rights to freedom, democracy and good governance.

“I want to assure you of the support of the Government and people of Rivers State at these trying times. You need not fear as God will surely defeat your enemies and grant you a resounding victory come Saturday 14th July 2018.”

Governor Wike said that the reasons adduced by the Police High Command is infantile and shameful. He said that no permission is required for a peace rally.

He said: “In explaining the attack, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations), Habila Joshak shamelessly claimed that they acted to brutalize the Governor and his people because the rally and peaceful road walk he was to address and lead was not authorized by the police. This claim is totally rubbish and should be told to the marines.

“Knowing that it cannot defeat the PDP in a free and fair electoral contest, the APC had earlier threatened to cage the Governor and takeover Ekiti State Government House by brutal force.

“Today’s brutal action was therefore carried out in furtherance of the deliberate plan to intimidate the people of Ekiti State in order to facilitate the actualization of the devilish intentions of the enemies of democracy.”

Just in: Ojudu withdraws from Ekiti gov race, says ‘won’t step on blood to get power’

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on political matters, Babafemi Ojudu, has withdrawn from the Ekiti state governorship race.

Ojudu who was one of the aspirants in the inconclusive All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary on Saturday, May 5 said he is not willing to step on blood to get to power

He announced his withdrawal during a press conference on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Ojudu said he did not want to be associated with a mess, citing that, among other issues, as the reason for his withdrawal.

The APC had initially fixed a repeat of the primary election for Friday but it was later pushed to Saturday.

Ojudu in his statement described the exercise as an “unfair contest”.

He said: “From what has happened since May 5 to date, it goes without saying that this is an unfair contest where the National Working committee chairman has clearly demonstrated that he does not care what happens to our dear party now and in the nearest future. We saw a chairman who has conspired with one of the aspirants in the race to unleash mayhem on others, wreak havoc and violence on ordinary citizens and exposed the state to great embarrassment on national television. We saw an aspirant so unpopular to the extent that delegates called him unprintable names at the voting arena now being imposed on our people, not minding if this means we lose this state forever.

“We do not believe in engaging in an unfair contest and I am not ready to step on blood to get to power. As I have reiterated at different times in the course of the campaign, this was never about me. It was not about an ambition but a mission to give a new lease of life to Ekiti State and the people. It was about safeguarding the future of our children, our grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even generations yet unborn. There is no doubt that we all love this land, that everyone of you had best hopes and aspiration for this beautiful state we call ours and that above all, this state should wear a new look, be adorned with a new reputation and have a new image of itself.

“All my life, I have fought injustice and sought the good of the whole. Therefore, this injustice perpetrated against Ekiti people by the NWC Chairman cannot be allowed to stand. This is why the fight will continue, not as an aspirant but as a party reformer. As a leader and party chieftain, I will inspire a new generation of leaders – of young professionals, businessmen and technocrats to re-enter our politics and change this state. Only then can we have men and women of honour who will take Ekiti out of the wilderness and restore her to her pride of place.

“At the national level, I will continue to support Mr. President in ensuring party reforms. I will work hard to ensure that never again is our party thrown to desperate men who feed on monetary inducements and undermine their own party. This movement continues but I would be stepping down immediately as a governorship aspirant to focus on this new mission.”

Ojudu added that he is not stepping down for any of the aspirants but pulling out of the race completely.
