    NERC transfers regulatory oversight in Ekiti to State govt

    The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), says it has transfered regulatory oversight of electricity market in Ekiti State to the state Electricity Regulatory Bureau (EERB).

    The commission said this in a statement posted on its website in Abuja on Tuesday.

    The commission said the transfer was in compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended).

    The statement recalled that with the  Electricity Act (EA) 2023, the commission retains the role as central regulator with regulatory oversight on the inter-state and international generation, transmission, supply, trading and system operations.

    According to the statement, the Act also mandates any state that intends to establish and regulate intrastate electricity markets to deliver a formal notification of its processes.

    The statement also said that the state had to request NERC to transfer regulatory authority over electricity operations in the state to the state regulator.

    ”Based on this, the government of Ekiti complied with the conditions precedent in the laws, duly notified NERC and requested for the transfer of regulatory oversight of the intrastate electricity market in Ekiti.

    ”The commission in the Order made the following provisions: direct Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution (IBEDC) Company to incorporate a subsidiary (BEDC SubCo and IBEDC SubCo).

    ”The two distribution companies are to assume responsibilities for intrastate supply and distribution of electricity in Ekiti State from BEDC and IBEDC.

    ”BEDC and IBEDC shall complete the incorporation of BEDC SubCo and IBEDC SubCo within 60 days from April 22.

    ”The sub companies shall apply for and obtain licences for the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity from EERB, among other directives,”it said

    The commission said that all transfers envisaged by the Order shall be completed by October 22.

    NERC had also transfered regulatory oversight of the Enugu electricity market to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

    20-year-old charged with stealing pot of soup in Ekiti

    The police on Wednesday brought a 20-year-old man, Monday Ojo, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged housebreaking and stealing of a pot of soup and other items.

    The defendant, who has  no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of housebreaking and stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Insp Moyosola Adesola, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 14 at  noon on Falegan, Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti.

    Adesola alleged that the defendant broke into the house of one Mrs Modupe Ajala and stole the soup, ‘fufu’, Indomie noodles,  salt and  onions, all valued at N300, 000.

    She said that the offences contravened Sections 322 and 302(1) (a) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    She adjourned the case until April 23 for hearing.

    The Ekiti House of Assembly has described as shocking the death of the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Mr Paul Omotosho.

    The party chairman died in the early hours of Wednesday after a brief illness in a undisclosed hospital in Ekiti

    A statement by the spokesperson of legislative, Mr Babatunde Oke, quotes the Speaker, Mr Adeoye Aribasoye, as saying the sad news of the departure of Omotosho was received with shock and grief.

    Aribasoye described Omotoso as an exceptional statesman, who made indelible marks in the growth and development of Ekiti in different capacities.

    “He was a remarkable and selfless political leader, who was motivated by the common good of our people and our great party, APC.

    “Our heartfelt condolences go to Oba Festus Olatunde, the Olaibiyemi II, the Onimesi of Imesi-Ekiti, the progressives family, the government and people of Ekiti, as well as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

    “Also our condolences go to the immediate family of our dear cheerful, generous, and father, Omotosho, who was full of wise counsel.

    “A frontline lawyer and conscientious politician of progressive bent, late Omotoso would be remembered for his immeasurable courage and patriotic contributions to the constitutional and socio-political development of Nigeria.

    “Though painful to all of us in the 7th-Assembly that he couldn’t take our party to an enviable height he envisaged, we take solace in his legacies as a statesman of repute.

    “We beseech God for the repose of his soul and to strengthen and comfort his family,” Aribasoye said.

    Ex- Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has said that former President, Muhammadu Buhari took Nigeria 50 years backward during his eight-year administration.

    Fayose noted this during an interview on a national tv program.

    The former governor said Buhari’s bad decisions are responsible for the current Economic hardship faced in the country.

    Fayose, however, cautioned President Bola Tinubu to stop describing his predecessor as a blessing to Nigeria.

    He said “he (Buhari) threw us back to 50 years of our history.”

    Fayose described the Buhari government as one of “total regret, and today, the consequences of yesterday are manifesting, and it’s so disturbing and sad.

    He said, “Look at the eight years of President Buhari, what would be left of a country like Nigeria as of today even if Tinubu means well? Where do we place the debts?”

    Police parade suspect involved in killing of Ekiti traditional rulers

    Ekiti Police Command has paraded one Alhaji Baboga for his alleged involvement in the killing of the two traditional rulers in the Ikole Axis of Ekiti On Monday, Jan. 29, 2024.

    Addressing Journalists on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti, the Assistant Inspector General of police (AIG) in charge of Ekiti, Dare Ogundare, said it took the combined efforts of security agencies in the state to apprehend the suspect in the forest between Ayedun and Ayebode

    He said that the suspect had confessed to the crime while efforts are on to apprehend his accomplices.

    The AIG, who said no arrest was made during the rescue operation for the abducted school pupils and their teachers, however, informed journalists that some other suspects had been arrested at Oke Osun, in Ikere Ekiti, Igbo Okah and Iju-Ikere boundary forest.

    On whether ransom was paid to secure the release of the Emure abductees, the police boss said that the Nigeria Police would never encourage ransom payment, commending the Inspector General of Police, and the Ekiti State governor for their intervention in the quick release of the school pupils and their teacher.

    Answering questions from newsmen, the suspect in the killing of the Ikole traditional rulers, Baboga, confirmed his involvement in the crime.

    BREAKING: One dead as Ekiti pupils regain freedom after 7 days in kidnappers den

    Staff and pupils of Apostolic Faith Group School, Emure in Ekiti State, who were kidnapped about seven (7) days ago have finally regained their freedom.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the school bus driver identified as Taye Rasaki, however, did not make it out of the kidnappers den alive.

    Those who regained freedom include five students and three staff of the school while Rasaki was killed by the dare-devil kidnappers.

    Recall gunmen on Monday ambushed a bus conveying the schoolchildren and staff of the school back to their homes at Eporo on the road and whisked nine among the occupants away, leaving the bus on the road.

    The kidnappers were said to have reached out to the families of the abducted pupils and demanded N100m ransom for each of the nine persons in their den.

    The abductors, however, on Thursday reduced the ransom to N15m for all the abductees with threat to kill the victims if the money was not paid on time.

    However, on Sunday morning, reprieve came their way as the bandits set them free.

    The Chairman of Emure Council Area of Ekiti State, Hon. Adebayo Oluwatosin, who confirmed the development, said the victims are in the palace of Elemure of Emure Ekiti.

    He added that the driver was killed while the other eight regained their freedom.

    Confirming the development, Ekiti Police Command Public Relation Officer, Sunday Abutu said:

    “All victims were rescued today at about 1:30am but unfortunately, we lost the driver who was unexpectedly killed by the abductors.”

    Fresh details emerge on abduction of primary school pupils in Ekiti

    An unspecified number of school children have been reportedly kidnapped in Emure Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

    The incident came about the same time when gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, attempted to kidnap three Ekiti traditional rulers but later killed two of them.

    One of the traditional rulers was said to have escaped the scene mysteriously.

    Gov. Biodun Oyebanji, while confirming the abduction of the children on Tuesday, promised to deploy all apparatus possible, to unearth the criminals responsible and bring them to justice.

    The school, Apostolic Faith Nursery/Primary School, situated in Emure-Ekiti, had its school bus conveying the pupils, when they were attacked in the evening on Monday.

    Local sources who spoke on the incident, said the bus was at neighbouring Eporo Ekiti town boundary when the incident happened.

    Reacting, Oyebanji, through Mr Yinka Oyebode, his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, urged for calmness, saying the state government would do everything humanly possible to rescue the pupils.

    He urged citizens of the state not to despair over the kidnapping of the pupils and their teachers, assuring that efforts were on to get them rescued.

    The governor’s statement also clarified that some pupils of the private school in Emure-Ekiti, along with their teachers, and the bus driver, were abducted while returning to Eporo- Ekiti, Monday evening.

    The governor, who described  the kidnapping of the pupils as callous and unacceptable, said nothing would be spared in the efforts to rescue them.

    He assured that security agencies in the state were already on the trail of the abductors, with a mandate to bring the pupils and their teachers back safely.

    He added that security was being stepped up across the state, with a view to flushing out criminal elements from their hideouts.

    While calling on the citizens to remain calm and vigilant, he urged them to cooperate with security agencies, by making available relevant information to the authorities.

    The police PPRO in the state, DSP Sunday Abutu, could not comment on the matter as he was engaged in an emergency security meeting with Gov. Oyebanji over the abduction.

    The governor had engaged all security apparatuses in the state in an emergency meeting in response to the unfortunate situation.

    Protest rocks Ekiti over abduction of pupils, council chairman condemns killing of traditional rulers

    The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU), on Tuesday, embarked on a peaceful protests over the abduction of primary school pupils in Emure Local Government Area and killing of two traditional rulers in the state.

    Some pupils  and three teachers of  Apostolic Faith Nursery and Primary school in Emure were reported to have been abducted on Monday afternoon by suspected kidnappers in Eporo-Ekiti, a border town.

    The protesters marched through the streets  of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, demanding  immediate action of government  and security agencies to rescue the abducted pupils

    The students also condemned the failed abduction, and subsequent killing of two traditional rulers in the state on Monday afternoon.

    Speaking with journalists at the NUJ press centre, Oke Oriomi, Ado Ekiti, the National President of FESSU, Abel Ajibade, described the incident as pathetic.

    “These children were kidnapped in their bus. This is the major reason why we are calling on the security forces, media houses, and the government itself to please rescue the pupils, and bring them back to their comfort zone.

    “Education is our right. If we cannot actually study in a peaceful environment anymore, then, what is our right?”

    “We know the government is doing its best, we know they are trying.

    “Few months back, the government released equipment to security personnels; more are needed, more security is needed and those pupils that were kidnapped, we want them back. That is our own agitation”, he said.

    Also speaking, the Senate President of the union, Mr Omotosho Fasasi, said that the protest march embarked on was to strategic places including state secretariat and police command to draw attention to the incidents of kidnapping in the state.

    Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Oye Local Government Area in Ekiti, Mrs Clara Bamisile on Tuesday, urged security agencies to fish out the hoodlums that killed two traditional rulers in Ekiti.

    Bamisile, who made the call  in an interview in Oye-Ekiti, described the killing of the Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti , Oba Olatunde Olusola and the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, Oba Babatunde Ogunsola as act of wickedness and cruelty.

    The chairperson sympathised with the families and communities of the late traditional Obas, assuring them that the perpetrators would be arrested and be made to face the wrath of the law.

    ”I want to sincerely sympathise with the families of the late traditional rulers over their sudden death.

    ”It is quite unfortunate that our communities that used to be peaceful and devoid of cases of kidnapping have suddenly become insecure.

    ”I want to urge our security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of these evil acts are arrested,” she said.

    Bamisile appealed to residents of Oye-Ekiti and other communities to be security conscious and avoid late night journeys.

    Tinubu condemns Ekiti killings, directs rescue of kidnapped pupils

    President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killing of two traditional rulers in Ekiti state, the Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Samuel Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, Oba David Babatunde Ogunsola.

    A statement by presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, said  that Tinubu condemned the mindless and brutal bloodletting, and pledged that the perpetrators would not escape justice.

    The President condoled with the families and subjects of the traditional rulers, Gov. Biodun Oyebanji, and the people of Ekiti State on this deeply agonising development.

    In the same vein, Tinubu directed the immediate rescue of pupils and teachers of a private nursery and primary school in Emure Ekiti kidnapped around Eporo-Ekiti area of the State.

    He said that security of life and property is the primary responsibility of government, assuring Nigerians that the nation’s security architecture is being robustly fortified for better and expected outcomes.

    On Monday, two of three Ekiti traditional rulers returning from a meeting in Irele-Ekiti were accosted and gunned down.

    Gunmen abducted six pupils and three teachers of a private school and their bus driver at Eporo-Ekiti, on Monday evening.

    Dare-devil gunmen kill two royal fathers in Ekiti

    Some dare-devil kidnap suspects, on Monday evening, shot and killed two traditional rulers said to be returning from a security meeting in Irele-Ekiti.

    The Police Public Relations Officer,  ASP. Sunday Abutu, confirmed the killing to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti but said that details about the incident were still sketchy.

    Abutu said that necessary action was ongoing, saying that the Tactical and Intelligence teams of the command had been deployed to the area of the incident.

    The deceased included the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, Oba David Ogunsakin, and Onimojo of Omojola-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Olusola.

    It was learnt that they were killed between Oke-Ako and Ipao-Ekiti, located in Ajoni Local Government Area (LGA).

    It was further gathered that the Alara of Ara-Ekiti in Ikole LGA escaped when the armed men accosted them and attempted to forcefully take them away.

    In a reaction to the incident, the Chairman of Ajoni Local Council Development Area, Micheal Ogungbemi, said the gunmen tried to abduct the three traditional rulers.

    Ogungbemi said it was “quite unfortunate that two of the Obas lost their lives during the incident”.

    Govt distributes free JAMB forms in Ekiti

    No fewer than 3,000 candidates have benefitted from Ekiti State free Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) e-pin forms in the State.

    Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Olayemi Oyebanji, stated this during the distribution of the free JAMB forms to 3,000 candidates on Monday in Ado-Ekiti.

    According to her, Ekiti State government has expended nothing less than N20 million for the procurement of the JAMB forms for the candidates.

    She said the annual event was a golden opportunity for the beneficiaries to pass the examination with good results that would enable them undertake their desired courses in higher institutions of their choice.

    She reiterated the state government’s commitment to free and compulsory Education programmes through the payment of the West Africa School Certificate Examination fees, parameter fencing of Educational facilities to ensure adequate security among others.

    “It is of note that the Ekiti State government cares for all, the youth and the old. As the government continually embarks on the renovation of buildings in the 912 primary Schools, 200 secondary schools and the three special schools to provide access to friendly learning environment, capacity building for teachers to ensure that students receive sound education,” Oyebanji added.

    Earlier in her address, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Kofoworola Aderiye, charged the students to avoid all distractions capable of stopping them from passing their examinations and choosing courses where their strength lies.

    Also, in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr Folakemi Olomojobi, appreciated the commitment of Ekiti State government in ensuring that Ekiti indigenes of school-going age enjoy access to education.

    She enjoined the candidates to reciprocate the gesture of the Oyebanji-led government by scoring well in the JAMB examination.

    In their goodwill messages, stakeholders, including, the Chairman, House committee on Education, Mr Jacob Awoniyi, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Taiwo Olatubosun, the Chairman, State Universal Basic  Education, Prof. Femi Akinwumi, among others, called on the state committee on Adult Education to organise coaching classes for the students while the beneficiaries should be careful in filling the forms in order not to make wrong subject combinations.

    One of the beneficiaries, Ajide Ifeoluwa, promised, on behalf of others, that they would reciprocate the gesture with good results to encourage the government to do more.

    Nigeria Spelling Bee champion, lands in Uganda for world championship

    Ekiti state born, Miss Flourish Ajibola, Nigeria’s National Spelling Bee Champion, has arrived in Kampala Uganda for the 2023 world spelling bee competition.

    Ajibola and her tutor, Mr Gbenga Ogunlade, both from Ekiti state, left Nigeria over the weekend, following the fulfilment of Governor Oyebanji’s pledge to foot the bill for the trip to the international competition.

    Recall that two months ago, Governor Oyebanji had pledged to foot the bills for Ajibola’s participation at the world championship in Uganda when he received the student of the Saint Lawrence Metropolitan School, Ado Ekiti, in his office, accompanied by her school’s proprietor, Laurence Oluwafemi.

    Governor Oyebanji, on that significant day, not only received Flourish’s trophies but reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to transforming educational values in the state. In a decisive move, he approved the full sponsorship of Flourish’s trip and her teacher to the upcoming competition in Kampala, emphasizing that his commitment to education and human capital development is beyond rhetorics.

    The Ekiti State governor had then approved the full sponsorship of Ajibola’s trip to the upcoming competition in Kampala.
