  • Ekiti APC Primary: Tinubu denies anointing any candidate

As aspirants slugged it out for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in the party’s primary election in Ekiti on Saturday, APC National Leader, Sen. Bola Tinubu said in Lagos that he had no anointed candidate.

Tinubu spoke with newsmen in Ikeja as the APC held its ward congresses in Lagos.

The winner of Saturday’s primary election will fly the party’s flag in the July 14 Ekiti governorship election, in which the APC is seeking to oust the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

”I believe those in charge of the primary in Ekiti will do the right thing. I have put my own political gear in neutral.

”I have no anointed candidate. Everyone there aspiring and contesting are very dear members and they deserve the right to participate.

”About 33 of them in all, and we only need one seat for governorship. We have had leadership discussions. I like the fact that they showed up respectfully and committed to the peace and stability of the party in that State,” Tinubu told newsmen.

He said that feelers from Ekiti showed that things had been going on smoothly.

“We have responsible leadership around there.

”Sincerely, I had wanted to be in Ekiti but when you have this situation where Congress is holding the same time their primary is holding, charity begins at home; I must stay in Lagos to ensure that I help them.

” There are capable leaders over there that will see to the smooth exercise of the primaries in Ekiti, ” Tinubu said.

Speaking on the ward congresses in Lagos, Tinubu urged party members to conduct themselves peacefully to help the country grow and progress democratically.

He also urged them report any complaint at the party headquarters, rather than take laws into their hands.

”Until the various officials conducting the congresses write their reports, my own decision is to continue to appeal to the party to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with the rule of law.

”If they have any complaints, they should write to the party headquarters and just don’t take laws into their hands.

”I am proud of what is happening. I am very proud of the leadership. The leaders are for everybody; no biases, and they should move on peacefully and help the country to grow and progress democratically,” he said.

Tinubu said he was impressed with the turnout of members at the ward congresses

“I am very happy and proud of our party, All Progressives Congress, the APC. We are demonstrating to the people across the country that we are a law abiding political party.

”We believe in the tenets of democracy and that we demonstrate the openness in the congresses across the country, particularly.

”I can speak emphatically about Lagos that things are going according to plan, very open and transparent. People queued up behind whoever they want, no pre-ordained candidate. The turn-out is very impressive.

”The membership of the party is growing in leaps and bounds and open to all democrats who want to be identified with us.

”This is one of the best ways to energise the party that is almost remaining dormant at grassroots level and you could see the sense of belonging and the activities of ordinary people. It is a great joy for me,” he said.

  • BREAKING: Ekiti APC primaries stalled as agents clash over alleged irregularities

The governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State was on Saturday suspended due to alleged irregularities and subsequent outbreak of order by party agents.

Voting was ongoing and a good number of delegates had cast their votes when suddenly delegates raised the alarm that a candidate, the Minister of Mines and Steel, Kayode Fayemi, was breaching the rules without any caution from the organisers.

The agents of the other aspirants alleged that the process had been compromised due to some practice allegedly introduced by delegates voting for Fayemi, a former governor of the state.

The agents immediately disrupted the process, forcing security agents to cordon off the voting area to secure the ballot boxes and papers.

There was sporadic shooting by security personnel to ensure calm.

Efforts by the Chairman of the organising committee, Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa, to call the primaries to order were unsuccessful as at 5.00 p.m.

However, Fayemi’s representative, Abejide Adewumi, said other agents realised that his candidate was coasting home to victory and decided to disrupt the process.

He said the other aspirants should have allowed the process to go through even if they had grievances.

He also added that the organisers should resume the process and allow the remaining delegates to cast their votes.

In a swift response, the director general of the Babafemi Ojudu campaign, Ranti Adebisi, said the process could not continue because it had been compromised.

“The process has been compromised. When there was a rule that you can only bring in two people. He brought in 18 observers. He cannot come here and disrupt what is going on in Ekiti State,” he said.

Other agents complained that the party had no clear guidelines as to how the process should be conducted, changing the rules intermittently without informing those participating in the process.

They also alleged that some security operatives close to the voting area were telling the delegates how to vote and to vote for Mr Fayemi.

They want the process stopped and all their observations considered before the primaries could continued.

Meanwhile, the organising committee has called for more security reinforcements to ensure that the situation does not degenerate further.

Two former governors and three former senators are among the 33 governorship aspirants testing their popularity in Saturday’s primaries.

Fayemi could not, however, be immediately reached for comments as at the time of filing this report.

Gunmen on Saturday kidnapped the Financial Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Mr. Kayode Oni.

Oni was reportedy kidnapped on the Efon-Erio-Ekiti Expressway while returning to Aramoko Ekiti in the Ekiti West Local Government Area around 4.30pm.

He revealed that the kidnappers had established contact with his wife and younger brother and demanded N30m ransom.

He added that Oni was carrying his daughter and grandson in his car at the time he was kidnapped.

“The family told the abductors that the entire family can’t even raise N1m. Our party is not resting as well. We are trying to ensure that he is safe,” Adebayo added.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdullahi Chafe, said he was out of Ekiti and had not been briefed.

“I can’t confirm now; there is no way I will know because I am not in Ekiti State as I speak to you,” the CP said.

After the meeting, Tinubu told reporters that the meeting was aimed at putting the APC house in order ahead of the party’s governorship primary in Ekiti State fixed for May 7, 2018.

He said the aspirants were invited to get their commitment to cooperate with one another as well as the party’s leadership for a transparent primary.

Tinubu said, “We invited them; they came over and they have been here for hours. For what purpose? Free and fair primary that is transparent, that is not tainted, that is incorruptible, that is indisputable and they said that is what they demanded of us.

“We have, therefore, agreed to guarantee that there will not be interference in the political situation and to pledge our support for them.”

  • Ekiti 2018: DPP holds guber primaries May 10

Ekiti 2018: DPP holds guber primaries May 10

The National Chairman of the Democratic Peoples’ Party (DPP), Mr Garshon Benson, said on Thursday that the party would on May 10 hold its primaries for the Ekiti governorship election.

Benson said the party would hold credible primaries and was seriously preparing for it.

He said DPP would ensure that a credible candidate would emerge as its flag bearer for the July 14 governorship poll.

He said that three aspirants had already indicated interest to contest for the governorship seat under the party.

“We are confident that INEC will do a good job by creating enabling environment and a level playing ground for all political parties and their candidates to participate in the poll.

“We believe we are going to give a proper account of ourselves in Ekiti when the time comes.

“All the three aspirants that have declared their intension so far are popular and they are sons of the state.

“It is the delegates that will decide who will be the party’s flag bearer,’’ he said.

Benson, however, advised those had yet to register in the ongoing nationwide continuous voter registration to do so.

“We encourage anybody that is 18 years and above that had not registered to go and register and get his or her PVC.

“It is with your PVCs that you can determine the fate of any government. You can vote in or vote out any government,’’ he said.

  • Ekiti 2018: I’ve been receiving strange, threatening calls, text messages – REC

Ekiti 2018: I’ve been receiving strange, threatening calls, text messages – REC

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, Prof. Abdulganiyu Raji, has raised the alarm over receiving constant strange, threatening calls and text messages who politicians in the state.

Raji said, “Most of these threats are from elders alleging that we are one-sided.

“But they have forgotten that there are two sides to a coin, if you don’t want INEC to do some things, you too must be cautious. How could a party go and induce INEC members of staff? This is unacceptable.

“We will use over 10,000 youth corps members for this election, can all of them be saints? Some will misbehave but we have to use an appropriate way to deal with them.

“Let me assure you this, I have told you that I will abide by the rules and I know my members of staff will comply with my stand,” he assured.

Speaking at a Stakeholders’ Forum in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Raji said no fewer than 23 political parties had formally notified the commission of their primaries.

He, however, said only 21 out of the 42 political parties existing in Ekiti were qualified to participate in the July 14 governorship poll.

He appealed to all security agencies in the state to come to the aid of the commission by fortifying security around INEC officials as well as the over 10,000 corps members to be used for the conduct of the election.

The state Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Chafe, warned political parties and aspirants participating in the July 14 gubernatorial election against embarking on campaigns without first seeking clearance.

He said this was without prejudice to the need for cooperation with other agencies.

According to him, other security agencies are also to enforce the laws guiding such rallies and processions, particularly those specified in sections 94, 95 and 96 of the Electoral Act 2010 that forbid certain conduct at political rallies, procession and campaigns.

He warned that since punishments were prescribed for misconduct, the police and other security agencies had a duty to arrest erring persons and bring them to justice.

The police boss, who announced that he would be retiring from the service on the very day the APC would be conducting its gubernatorial primary on May 5, 2018, clarified that a new police commissioner to be soon deployed, would start from where he would end.

He said the command was ready for the election, and that security of lives and property of residents and officials were guaranteed.

  • Ekiti 2018: APC will use federal, state, local powers to defeat Fayose – Fayemi declares

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development and governorship hopeful in Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will deploy all resources at its disposal to wrestle power from incumbent, Governor Ayodele Fayose in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

He also threatened that once the PDP was roundly defeated, Governor Fayose would be prosecuted for mismanaging the economy of the state.

Fayemi, a former governor of the state, spoke on Saturday at a rally in Ado Ekiti, where he declared his ambition to seek the APC ticket for the July 14 governorship election.

He however assured that whoever emerged from the party’s primaries would be supported by other aspirants to ensure victory at the polls.

Fayemi was governor between October 16, 2010 and October 15, 2014, after he was defeated by the incumbent.

“They said the June 21, 2014 governorship poll was free, fair and credible, so that of July 14, 2018 too will be free, fair and transparent,” Fayemi said.

“They will accuse us of so many things. They will accuse us of using federal might, but we will not care.

“We will use local, state and federal powers to take over Ekiti from a rapacious and government being run by a brigand in Ekiti.”

The rally, which was well attended by party supporters, created a traffic snarl that left motorists stranded for several hours.

The minister who used the declaration to highlight his achievements during his tenure as governor, said he would want to bring back the “good days” and ensure the state was rescued from the “misrule” the current government had brought the state to.

He, however, stressed the need for members of the APC to be united during and after the primaries.

“Let me say this, I am a loyal party man and I am ready to support whoever the party fields as the candidate,” he assured.

“Yes, I am holding an important position in this government through the grace of God and by the magnanimity of our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, and I am satisfied with it if politics that I play is for me and my family alone.

“But there is an unfinished business in our State. We have to complete and bring back those projects we initiated when we were in the saddle.

“Again, politics to me, is not about title but about service and sacrifice”.

On the rising acrimony among the APC aspirants, the Mr. Fayemi urged the State Working Committee to set out a code of ethics to regulate the conducts of every contestant, describing the tirades against his person as unacceptable.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for aspirants to indulge in abuses, use intemperate languages against one another. If we do this, we will be damaging the brand the APC is known for,” he said.

“Each contestant should sell his brand to the party delegates who will decide our fates.

“We should be ready to support whoever the party picks as the candidate, provided the process is free, fair and transparent if truly we are loyal party men. I will see whoever fights after the primary as a mole who was sent to destroy our party.”

The APC acting chairman, Kemi Olaleye, said the party would do its best to be transparent in the primary.

“We are in a sensitive time and we need ourselves. No one can win election alone, so I beg of you to not use your writeups on our platforms to destroy our party,” she said.

“Let us be united and know that we have only one enemy, which is Fayose for us to be able to win.

“Our minister has been supportive of the party. We are proud of him for using his Ministerial position to help Ekiti and APC members.”

  • Ekiti: Study Reveals Community’s Disconnect From Governance

Ekiti: Study Reveals Community’s Disconnect From Governance

A study on Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti state has revealed a near disconnect of the 24 indigenous communities making up the area from the process of governance. It also shows that the people are hardly consulted by any layers of government on matters concerning development projects sited in the area.

It says “Inclusion of various groups in the society in development plan and budgeting process is yet to assume wider coverage of all constituent groups, especially with regards to involvement of women, the physically challenged, youths and those who do not play active roles in party politics”.

The research titled “Baseline Study on the Level of Inclusion of Community Members in Budgetary and Development Processes” also states that the people seem to have lost confidence in officials of the local government, saying that they are not responsive to their demands and yearnings.

Commissioned by Community Life Project (CLP) with support from Ford Foundation, the study urgently calls for the need to regain the people’s confidence. “Those in governance should try as much as possible to build or regain, as the case may be, the confidence of the people so as to make them participate actively”, it says.

In contrast however, the study which was presented by Mr Gbenga Adejare, a PhD student of Sociology at the University of Ibadan, says the people have “greater level of confidence in their traditional leaders and chiefs”.

The study is of the view that “The barriers limiting the involvement of women in all strata of authority, especially at the traditional level should be removed.” “Since Ikole people are predominantly involved in agricultural activities, policy makers must tailor their policies to capture this demographic in the area”, it says.

While noting that “Youth unemployment is pervasive in Ikole and inhibits their full participation in all process of budgeting and governance”, it recommends “the need for intervention” to prevent “youth restiveness and other forms of urban unrest”.

Also observing that a high level of cooperation is necessary to “achieve sustainable development holistically”, the study however notes that “Inter-community rivalry makes it difficult for all the communities in Ikole to pursue development with a united front”.

Inter-community rivalry must be minimised if not eradicated. This can be possible through re-orientation of people and projects. Lop-sidedness in the level of development across the communities should also be addressed”, it says.

The study indicates that residents of Ikole “communities decry poor and inaccessible facilities like pipe borne water, roads and electricity which they see as very critical for the development of Ikole Local Government Area”. It posits that the challenge of inadequacy of electricity can be met by harnessing the resource of Itapaji dam which presently lies fallow.

The dam can also be used to solve the problem of irrigation for farmers and water scarcity in various Ikole communities”. “The challenge of bad roads should also be tackled head-on with the required urgency”.

It is not all knocks. Although the area is made up of 24 communities with their respective sovereign kings, the study notes that “Ikole have good potential for development due to the availability of good and accessible agricultural land, agricultural produce, local markets and symbiotic cohesion to which 87.7%, 82.6%, 61.5% and 84.2% of the total respondents acceded to respectively.”

The people are also “moderately literate with, at least 3 out of 5 people possessing a least secondary school certificate and 4 out of 5 having at least primary school educational qualification”.

Intra-community cooperation, security and community cohesion are also held in high premium in Ikole. The communities “possess high potential for development given their level of communal cohesion and resilience and readiness to influence governance positively”.

Summing up the community’s travails at a workshop in Ikole to review the report, Mr Ayoposi Areola, former speaker of the Legislative Council says,“Projects are usually done here only at the behest of the governor, the people’s interest is hardly considered”. Quoting from the popular lines of Walter Rodney’s epic work, “How Europe Underdevelop Africa”, Areola contends that “Any development designed for me without me is not for me”.

Appraising the study, Mr Leye Fagbemi, a retired permanent secretary, Ministry of Budget and Planning, Ekiti state says, “If there’s budget preparation without monitoring, nothing will happen. To make the budget sustainable, the people must be included. We also need to strengthen the capacity of the technocrats who will implement the budget”.

Mr Blessing Oluwole, public relations officer, Odooro Development Union is of the opinion that “local governments have become mere salary paying organs in Nigeria. While it is working in America, here it has almost collapsed. I’m just appealing that we need to do more to push our interest”

While commending the outcome of the study, Professor Abiodun Johnson Olatunji, director of Advancement and Linkage programmes, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti says, “We need to have political will to be able to implement it”. “The research finding is good but how will they implement it? There’s no sane government that will not embrace it. We need to identify resources that the people can latch on. It’s important we look at the area of value addition”.

Olatunji, also a Geosciences scholar however miffed at the absence of some vital geographical charts depicting the agricultural and other mineral resources available in Ikole LG that will facilitate any engagements with development partners.

Conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Ibadan led by Dr Akanle Olayinka, a Sociology scholar, the study was initiated by CLP to assess the resource/assets of communities in Ikole LGA. The focus was also to examine the perception of community members in the area about their resources/assets. It was muted to unveil the various forms of exclusion of the people and examine some challenges associated with the practice of inclusive governance. It was also done to explore available opportunities for development through inclusive governance in Ikole LGA.

According to the CLP Programme Officer, Mr Francis Onahor, several economic programmes have been initiated by different levels of government to end poverty and improve the economic conditions of citizens but these programmes have not resulted in any significant improvement in the living conditions of Nigerians.

One of the key failures of these programmes, he argues, is adduced to the “lack of participation and ownership of the programmes by grassroots communities who are supposed to be the ultimate beneficiaries of the programmes”.

Programmes and projects are decided by government with little or no input from the communities. Communities are still not empowered enough nor understand their civic rights enough to place persistent demands on the government for consistent and efficient service delivery”, the CLP notes in its fact sheet.

If we must reverse this trend, the organisation says, “programmes aimed at promoting real development and improving the lives of the citizens and communities must include active participation of citizens in decision-making on public spending patterns and priorities. There is need to ensure that the voices of citizens and local communities are heard in deciding how, when and where public money is spent and what it is spent on at the local level”.

Onahor explains that Ikole LGA was being used as a pilot project so that the communities can design their master plan and engage government on the basis of their own charter of demands.”It’s important the people do a needs-assessment of the community and arrange to present it to government”, he says.

Present at the validation workshop to review the report of the Baseline Study include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Mr Vincent Omodara, the Director, Local Government Administration, Mrs Adenike Olasheku, and Chairperson, Ikole LGA Mrs Abiola Olukayode who was represented by Mr Ayo Ogunbayi. Also at the event were the Elekole of Ikole, Oba Adewunmi Ajibade Fashiku who was represented by Chief Lanre Owoeye, the Olu of Itapaji, Oba Azeez Kareem Adebanjo and CLP’s Programme Officer, Mr Francis Onahor.

  • Ekiti governorship election, a ‘must-win’ for APC, says Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun, on Monday declared that the forthcoming July 14, 2018 Ekiti governorship election is a must win for the party.

Oyegun made the remark in Ado Ekiti during the kick-off of fresh membership registration drive of the APC in Ekiti.

According to him, the party will deploy every available resources to win the election which he described as a litmus test ahead of 2019 general elections

He promised all the 33 APC governorship aspirants that the party would conduct a free, fair and credible primary in the state.

He ruled out the possibility of delegates’ list padding and other fraudulent practices that could vitiate the outcome of the May 5 primary.

He also assured that the national secretariat of the party did not have any favourite among the aspirants as being insinuated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the State Chairman of APC, Chief Jide Awe, reportedly in hiding over an alleged murder case, made a surprise appearance at the event.

NAN reports that the Ekiti State Government had been after Awe, over his alleged complicity in the murder of Juliana Adewumi and Ayo Jeje, who were killed in Erinjiyan Ekiti on May 30, 2014 during the administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi.

Oyegun hinted that the delegates’ list to conduct the primary had been compiled and would be made available to aspirants with good financial standing for verification.

“We will work hard to ensure that Ekiti returns to the progressive fold after the July 14 election.

“Though, we are in power at the centre, but that doesn’t mean we should not work hard.

” President Muhammadu Buhari, as you know, will not rig or compromise or subvert the will of the electorate, so we must work hard to deserve the victory that will come to us,” he said.

NAN reports that Oyegun had earlier on arrival made a stop-over at the party secretariat where he flagged-off of the new membership registration exercise.

Oyegun was received by party chieftains, including the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, the Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Segun Oni and members of the State Working Committee.

Other aspirants at the event included Sen. Gbenga Aluko, Sen. Ayo Arise, Wole Oluyede, Wole Oluleye, Capt. Sunday Adebomi, Bimbo Daramola, Dr Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, Victor Kolade, Mr Kola Alabi, Mr Diran Adesua, Dr Bayo Oriire and Femi Bamisile.

Others like Mr Opeyemi Bamidele, Sen. Babafemi Ojudu and Mr.Bamidele Faparusi sent representatives.

“We have got your demands and we are giving you assurances that there will be no imposition and that the primary shall be free, fair and credible

“To all the aspirants, you must not campaign as if there won’t be tomorrow. Don’t campaign in a way that breeds enmity. I learnt that you are above 30, but the large number shouldn’t be a source of problem.

“Let me say this clearly, anybody who wants to fly the flag of our party must maintain decorum. We shall be fair to you as much as possible because there can’t be peace when justice is denied

“We must not also have bad losers, you must work with whoever the electors pick as their candidate during the primary.

“All aspirants must ensure that there is no division before and after the primary. We are also barring members of SWC from joining the bandwagon of campaign for any of the aspirants, because this can cause further division,” he stated.

Oyegun said the choice of Ekiti to flag off the programme was strategic, saying this conveyed a vivid and strong message of love for the people of the state, especially with regards to the July poll.

“I am happy with APC in Ekiti with the level of mobilization from our aspirants. You have shown that you are desirous to join the progressive fold. We didn’t choose Ekiti for the flag off of this programme by accident

“We have decided that this election is one that we will particularly work hard and leave no stone unturned, because to us it is a must-win election”, he said.
