  • We are not taking NIMET’s warning with levity, Osun, Ondo Ekiti govts.

We are not taking NIMET’s warning with levity, Osun, Ondo Ekiti govts.

The Osun, Ondo and Ekiti governments have assured residents in the states of proactive measures being taken to avert flood disasters in 2023, even as they solicited the support of the people to maintain a clean environment and refrain from dumping of waste in drains and waterways,

In separate interviews officials of the states, stakeholders, and residents were all unanimous that warnings by some Federal Government agencies of possible flooding in some states in the South-West region must not be taken with levity so as not to suffer human and material loss.

The Osun Ministry of Environment and Sanitation, says it has taken proactive measures to avert incidents of flood disaster in the state well before warnings by agencies of the federal government of possible flooding in some states in the South-West region.

Mr Tunde Odesanmi, the Director of Flood in the ministry, said that all structures along waterways in the state have been removed and the ministry regularly carries out dredging of streams to prevent them overflowing their banks during the rainy season.

“The state government just finished the first phase of dry season dredging and this is part of the proactive steps government is taking to prevent flooding,’’ he said.

Odesanmi said that the ministry had compiled lists of streams and rivers to be dredged ahead of the rainy season, adding that the ministry’s blueprint to mitigate flood disaster in the state will soon be presented to a committee set up by government

Also, Mr Rufus Oyegbile, Special Adviser to the governor on Environment and Sanitation, said the state government had been making judicious use of the ecological fund to tackle ecological problems in the state.

Oyegbile, who noted that though the ecological fund was not regular, said that the state nevertheless does make judicious use of what is available.

He said the state government had embarked on environmental protection projects and also tackling all ecological issues in the state.

The special adviser said the state government had been proactive in terms of preventing natural disaster from causing serious damage in the state, adding that dry season dredging of streams was one of the measures he state government had adopted to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

Also, the Ekiti State Government has promised to intensity current efforts, aimed at addressing problems associated with flooding and other environmental disasters in the State.

The Director, of State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Mr. Kolade Okeya, made this known in Ado-Ekiti.

He said that one of what the state government was doing in this regards was regular clearing of drainages and water channels across the state in preparation for rainy season.

Okeya said that the government was concerned about the warning of possible flooding in the state, hence the need to prepare adequately.

According to him, the State Emergency Management Authority is prepared to prevent heavy flooding in view of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) alert.

He said that SEMA had taken note of the three local government areas that NIMET had warned could be affected by imminent flooding and had alerted residents in the areas particularly those living in plains and near waterways to relocate to higher grounds.

NAN reports that NIMET had warned of imminent flooding in Ado, Ikere and Irepodun/Ifelodun LGAs of the state during the rainy season, warning people in communities living in harms-way to relocate to safer areas.

Okeya said that the agency has also embarked on sensitisation campaigns through conventional and social media to warn the people against dumping of waste in drains and waterways to prevent possibility of flooding.

Meanwhile, an Environmentalist, Mr Samuel Adewunmi, has attributed rapid population growth, urbanisation and hitherto poor physical planning, whereby residents build in flood prone areas, such as river banks, wet lands and low-lying areas, were the causes of flooding.

He said to control flooding, a combination of hard infrastructural solutions and ecosystem- based adaptation, should be pursued, to include construction of dams and reservoirs, so as to able to hold excess water and riverbank protection.

Adewunmi advised that there should be appropriate drainage system and storm water management regimes and dredging of some of the rivers in the states that NIMET has warned may experience flooding in the rainy season.

He said government should create awareness in the media and sensitisation programmes to educate residents on disaster risks.

According to him, the state governments need to strengthen it’s regulatory, governance and institution capacity in the areas of spatial planning and regional cooperation on trans-boundary water resources management.

Another stakeholder, Mrs Foluke Akanji also said efforts should be intensified on emergency response, flood prediction and enforcement of environmental and spatial planning Laws.

She advised government on the need to re-introduce environmental inspectors, so as to allow for effective policing of the environment against offenders.

The Chairman of Ikole Local Government Area, Mr Sola Olominu also said his administration had started evacuating refuse in the drains, to curb flooding during the rainy season.

He assured residents that his administration was committed to keeping the drains and waterways clear and appealed to residents to also clean drains in front of their residence on daily basis.

The Ondo State Emergency Agency (SEMA) also said that it constantly engages with MDAs saddled with the responsibility of maintaining the environment to prevent and reduce incidents of flooding in the state.

The Secretary of SEMA in the state, Mr Femi Obideyi, said that the agency, as the lead coordinators in emergency management, always ensure preventive mechanisms were put in place so as to reduce or prevent sharing of relief materials for events that could be prevented.

“We are the lead coordinators, as SEMA, other responders such as the Waste Management Board and the Ministry of Environment, are our stakeholders, they are the ones with the major work.

“We have been having continuous meetings with them so that they intimate us on their level of preparedness.

“For example, the Waste Management Board has the responsibility to ensure that debris on water ways were cleared and disposed properly.

“Where there is necessity for enforcement, they should carry out enforcement. Once the waterways are cleared, it will prevent incidences of flash floods,” he said.

Obideyi said the ministry of Environment was saddled with the responsibility of laiasing with the contractors in charge of dredging of water ways.

He said that his agency would continue to embark on massive sensitisation by the end of March to ensure that market women, traditional rulers and religious leader are carried along on the mass advocacy.

“We will sensitise people that they should stop dumping refuse inside drainage channels, this is not normal. The gutters and drains are not meant for that, so there must be a change of attitude in respect to this.

“Once the Waste Management Board is up and doing, the Ministry of Environment is up and doing and we carry out our advocacy, flood incidents will be drastically reduced,” he said.

He also added that his agency always interface with the Ministry of Urban and Regional Planning to ensure it does not give approval for structures on flood plains and waterways.

FG reveals plans to make Ekiti a Free Trade Zone

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to make Ekiti a major Free Trade Zone in Nigeria.

The government said this would support the state in delivering economic and knowledge-free zone where education-based industries and technological companies could operate.

Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authority (NEPZA), said this during a courtesy visit to Gov. Biodun Oyebanji, in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday.

Adesugba said the establishment of the economic zone would boost the economy of the state and increase its Internally Generated Revenue as well as reduce over-reliance on federal allocation.

He commended Ekiti Government for being proactive by creating education and knowledge zone.

He gave the assurance that the free trade zone would be ready within 18 months, adding that he was in Ekiti to confirm the commitment of the Federal Government toward the successful completion of the project.

He called on drivers and captains of industries to invest in the state when the zone was ready.

“I personally came to Ekiti to express the commitment of the Federal Government of Nigeria to support the state in delivering economic and knowledge free zone

“Government is committed to making Ekiti home of block chain technology, where technological companies and other industries that have things to do with education will be ready to invest.

” Ekiti is known for education and ideas innovation and this is where we are going to show the world that Nigeria has arrived,” he said.

The NEPZA managing director further said that the first thing was to get presidential declaration to make Ekiti a free zone.

”Oyebanji has given a matching order and within 18 months, we will get so many industries, both virtual and on-sight there,” he said.

Adesugba gave the assurance that people were already planning and working, and on the part of NEPZA, it would ensure the approval of the president.

In his remarks, Oyebanji said there was the need for the Federal Government to fast-track the completion of the project to attract more investors to the state, adding that productivity would always lead to shared prosperity.

The governor said that it was not wise for any state to drive its economy on monthly federal allocation, as it could not be used for effective wealth creation.

He noted that there was the need to fast-track declaration on Ekiti Knowledge Zone.

”My administration campaign is on a mantra of shared prosperity and that a people cannot prosper if they are not productive,” he said.

Oyebanji said that whether the Federal Allocation Account Committee came or not, if a society was productive, there would be wealth creation.

According to him, the fact is that the only thing Ekiti is known for is its intellectual resources.

“As a government, I am ready to lead from the front, I am ready to provide every support that is needed to drive this to ensure success.

“It will be fine, if we are able to meet the stipulated deadline because without that certification, we will not be able to do anything and investors will not come,” he said.

The governor added that Ekiti Government had invested a lot in infrastructure to drive the zone, and that much resources had been put on the Airport project.

He appealed to the Federal Government to execute the project.

Femi Adesina reveals why Buhari did not push for Fayose’s impeachment

President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, has disclosed that the president refrained from removing former Governor Ayodele Fayose from office at a time he had the powers and opportunities to remove the Ekiti governor.

Adesina made the disclosure in an article he wrote to commemorate Buhari’s 80th birthday anniversary, slated for December 17.

In his weekly article titled: ‘Buhari at 80: No Malicious Bone In His Body,’ the presidential spokesman recounted how Fayose had criticized Buhari during the 2014 campaigns.

Adesina noted that after the president won the

election, he could have retaliated against Fayose by mobilizing the state House of Assembly against Fayose.

The article reads: “How about Ayo Fayose, the Irunmole that eats Jollof rice. The former Ekiti State Governor had taken a stand against Buhari since 2014, during the campaigns. There was that infamous advertisement he placed in newspapers, displaying a coffin, and insinuating that if Buhari was elected, he would not last the distance.

“Fayose’s party was beaten black and blue, and entered President Buhari. What would an average, vengeful person have done, if he were in the mould of the man with the teacup and saucer?

“When Buhari came, the Ekiti House of Assembly was largely populated by APC members, whom Fayose had inherited. What to do? Just give a directive: remove that Governor within a week, and he directs the Inspector General of Police to lock down the Assembly chamber. But not Buhari. Why? Because he has no malicious bone in his body.”

He recalled that Buhari gave Fayose a warm handshake during a Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa.”

Ekiti House of Assembly reinstates 3 suspended lawmakers

Ekiti State House of Assembly has reinstated three lawmakers suspended from activities of the House following their roles in the stalling of the passage of the 2022 revised appropriation budget.

The lawmakers are Mrs. Yemisi Ayokunle, Mr. Ajibade Raphael, and Mr. Tope Ogunleye.

Their reinstatement followed the adoption of a motion moved by Leader of the House, Mr. Bode Adeoye at plenary on Tuesday.

The motion, seconded by Mr. Biodun Fawekun was unanimously adopted by members.

The Speaker of the House, Mrs. Olubunmi Adelugba had earlier read the letters of apology written by the three lawmakers at the plenary.

The lawmakers apologized for not following the directive of the party, the All Progressive Congress on the choice of Speaker to replace the late Funminyi Afuye who died on Oct. 19 after a brief illness.

One of the suspended lawmaker, Mrs. Kemi Balogun (Ado Constituency II) had earlier apologized and was reinstated on Monday.

  • Aribisogan’s impeachment as Speaker, irreversible, Ekiti Assembly replies Afe Babalola, Falana

Aribisogan’s impeachment as Speaker, irreversible, Ekiti Assembly replies Afe Babalola, Falana

The Ekiti State House of Assembly says the impeachment of Gboyega Aribisogan, who spent only six days as Speaker is irreversible.

This is contained in a counter statement issued on Thursday night by Adeoye Aribasoye, the new Chairman, House Committee on Media and Publicity, on behalf of the lawmakers.

Aribasoye said that contrary to impression created by the seven Senior Advocates of Nigeria, the removal of Aribisogan had come to stay, and that the new Speaker, Mrs Bunmi Adelugba, shall remain in office.

The seven eminent Ekiti lawyers, who are of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) rank, led by Aare Afe Babalola, had called for reinstatement of Aribisogan on the ground that his impeachment was “ill-conceived, illegal, null and void”.

Others Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN); Dele Adesina (SAN); Olu Daramola (SAN); Femi Falana (SAN); Dayo Akinlaja (SAN) and  Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), had on Wednesday night, issued a statement, condemning as unwarranted, Aribisogan’s purported impeachment and calling for his immediate reinstatement.

The senior lawyers also said that Mrs Bunmi Adelugba, elected as Speaker after Aribisogan’s impeachment should stop parading herself as the new Speaker, saying her purported election was irregular.

However, in a swift reaction, Aribasoye said: “The attention of the Ekiti State House of Assembly has been drawn to a letter circulating on the social media written by a combination of Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

“The letter is about the concern of the legal luminaries led by Aare Afe Babalola about the recent change of leadership in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, leading to the impeachment of Rt. Hon Gboyega Aribisogan, who was replaced with Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba.

“We recognise the right of the legal luminaries, as stakeholders in Ekiti State and we respect their opinions and advice, but that is where it ends.

“We wish to let the reading public know that members of Ekiti State House of Assembly feel a sense of injustice by the one sided opinion and biased intervention of the legal luminaries, who are also elderstatemen.

“The principle of justice all over the world is that all sides to a conflict must be heard and it is only then that justice can be seen to have been done.”

According to him, it is unfortunate that our elderstatemen did not hear from the side of the new Speaker and the remaining 16 members, who impeached the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Gboyega Aribisogan and elected Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba remains the validly elected Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and she enjoys the support of overwhelming majority of the Honourable members, party leadership and the government of Ekiti State.

“Therefore, the advice of the legal luminaries that Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba, who was duly elected by 17 members  should stop parading herself as the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, is unwarranted and we believe this is based on wrong information by the impeached Speaker.”

He said that the House has neither breached any section of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, nor its own Standing Rules concerning the impeachment of Aribisogan, and the election of Adelugba.

Aribasoye further explained that on Monday, Aribisogan was duly served an impeachment notice and was thereafter impeached by two third members of the whole House.

“We, however, wish to remind our legal luminaries that when a serious infraction of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was committed during the PDP  administration of Gov. Ayodele Fayose where seven members, impeached the then Speaker, Adewale Omirin, we didn’t see a convergence of legal luminaries condemning the action.

“This same Aribisogan was equally suspended by the fifth Assembly during the tenure of Gov. Fayose, but there was no whimper from our legal luminaries.

“We wish to reinstate that peace has returned to the Ekiti State House of Assembly. since the inordinately ambitious Speaker was impeached and suspended alongside his cohorts.

“Mrs Adelugba has presided over parliamentaries and plenaries, with majority of members present.

“She has announced appointment of new principal officers and she has constituted all Committees of the House,” he said.
