PWDs threaten to sue INEC if excluded from electoral process

Persons With Disabilities, (PWDs) have threatened to sue INEC if they are not included in the electoral process of Ekiti governorship election, slated to take place june 18.

They are also demanding that INEC and other stakeholders create accessible voting points and necessary facilities that would ensure their improved participation in the electioneering process seamlessly.

This submission is in a report by the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities, tagged: “Pre Election Assessment of Independent National Electoral Commission preparedness for Persons with Disabilities Participation for June 18 governorship election.”

The report obtained by newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, said the request of the group for inclusion was already a matter of law, hence it must be obeyed, so as not to disefranchise the special persons.

According to the Executive Director, Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), Dr. David Anyaele, the research is done to ascertain INEC’s preparedness in carrying along PWDs and ensure their security throughout the electoral process.

He urged INEC to collaborate with the security agents to ensure a credible election devoid of malpractice and hitch free.

He said: “The key reason for the research is to hold INEC accountable, urging them to train PWDs on their rights and make them understand the provision of the law which will better shape their participation in election.

“INEC should collaborate with the security agencies to reassure electorate of their safety, to reduce tension and brace up security challenges, especially in some flashpoints.

He said this would ensure accessible, credible, free, fair and peaceful election.

“They should also provide Disability Desk Officers at each INEC LGA offices and this position should be held by a PWD.

“INEC should also provide Umbrellas and shades for albinos or allow them vote as early as 8 a.m. to avoid them being under the sun and prone to skin cancer.”

Anyaele, however, discouraged PWDs from being involved in vote buying and selling, noting that it’s their civic responsibility to vote a candidate of their choice.

“Poverty is not particular with PWDs alone, but I urge you not to sell your votes because of money. It is our responsibility to discourage any form of vote buying and selling.

“It is everybody’s responsibility, not just PWDs because poverty does not discriminate; as it hits PWDs, it also hits persons without disability.”

Others who contributed to the report included the Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons Living with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Kayode Owolabi, who urged INEC to take bold steps to improve the communication between them and JONAPWD.

He said there was an obvious disconnect and lack of proper engagement between both parties.

He urged INEC to make election materials and facilities accessible for all PWDs, including Form EC40H, polling units and assistive resources such as sign language interpreters, tactile ballot jackets, and magnifying lenses.

Other recommendations include the need to train polling station officials adequately, to understand and respond to PWD needs.

The importance of sensitising the public to the needs and challenges of PWDs to reverse negative public perceptions and attitudes towards them was also recommended.

June 18: NGO signs peace commitment with candidates in Ekiti

Ahead of the June 18 Governorship election in Ekiti State, three candidates in the race have signified their commitment to embrace peace and play by the electoral laws.

The commitment followed an engagement by The New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative (NIGAWD), on the Vote-Not-Fight (VNF) and Stop-Violence Against Women In Politics (STOP-VAWIP) campaigns.

The Vote Not Fight (VNF) Southwest campaign is being led by the Chief Executive Officer of NIGAWD, Mrs Abimbola Aladejare-Salako, who is also the Convener of Ekiti Youth Agenda campaign.

Aladejare-Salako told newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, that the VNF campaign promoted constructive youth participation in Nigeria’s political and electoral processes.

“The youth are expected to promote peaceful and constructive engagement with stakeholders before, during and after elections.

“We have also succeeded in getting the endorsement of the three principal actors in the June 18 Governorship election for the campaign and also expressed their commitment to the request to implement Ekiti Youth Agenda Document.

“The document is currently being reviewed by Ekiti youth groups and they individually assured us of the implementation if emerged as the next Governor of Ekiti State come June 18.

“The candidates that we visited and those we considered principal actors in the June 18 Governorship election are: Hon. Bisi Kolawole: (PDP), Hon. Biodun Oyebanji (APC), Engr. Segun Oni (SDP)

“Don’t get us wrong, all political parties, especially those that are participating in the election are all important.

” But because of time, we cannot go round, hence we choose the three candidates, but I can assure you that we are also monitoring others to ensure that the election is free, fair and violence-free,” the convener said.

The convener, further disclosed that the team was on an advocacy visit to Gov. Kayode Fayemi and Wife of the Governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, where they both pledged their commitment to the Vote Not Fight and Stop Violence Against Women In Politics campaigns.

Aladejare-Salako said the organization would continue to champion campaigns that would promote credible electoral system in the society.

Newsmen recalled that the Ambassador of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and Nollyhood star, Iniobong Edo, recently embarked on a three-day advocacy visit to Ekiti State on (S-VAWIP), to ensure that women have the rights to vote in a free, fair and violence-free poll and also be voted for.

The candidates in the peace pact called on stakeholders in the state to make sure the next election was conducted without rancour.

They promised to identify with the campaign which centered around peaceful election, non-violence against women in politics and empowerment of Nigerian youths.

They further called on political leaders and their followers to ensure peaceful election on June 18 because no election was worth the blood of any Ekiti man or woman.

The candidates urged the electorate to embrace peace because no society could grow in the midst of crisis.

They further promised to encourage women participation in politics and also ensure that, if elected governor, more women would be appointed into government because they were more effective in administration.

Ekiti community residents urge Gov. Fayemi to improve security network

Residents of Ijesa Isu-Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti on Saturday appealed to Gov. Kayode Fayemi to tighten security in the community.

Residents who spoke with newsmen appealed to security agencies and the state government to arrest kidnappers tormenting the community.

One of the residents, Mrs Ronke Adebayo, appealed to Gov. Fayemi to plug security holes that had been giving kidnappers to have field days in the area.

Adebayo noted that sons and daughters of the community had stayed away from home for fear of being kidnapped.

“It is quite unfortunate that our community that used to be very peaceful has become the den of kidnappers.

“Our sons and daughters outside Ekiti can no longer come home to visit us; instead they prefer to speak to us on phone.

“I appeal to Gov. Fayemi to install good security measures that would secure our lives and rescue us from kidnappers,’’ she said.

Another resident, Mr Sola Oni, said it was time the state government swung into action and eradicate kidnapping in Ekiti.

Oni condemned security agencies for not taking proactive measures to arrest the perpetrators of the evil act.

“The currently security challenges that we are facing in Ijesa Isu-Ekiti are not good, especially when we have active security agencies.

“I advise the governor to give priority to the safety of indigenes because kidnapping has become a business in the state.

“We want the kidnappers to be arrested and prosecuted because they are not bigger than the government or the security agencies,’’ he said.

Mrs Felicia Akanbi, also a resident, condemned the evil acts of unknown gunmen who had been kidnapping people in the community.

Akanbi noted that the town had been known for peace and love without any evidence of unlawful activities for decades.

She appealed to the state government to flush out the perpetrators of kidnapping in the community and make them to face the law.

Yet another resident, Mr Bode Oguntuase, said he moved his family out of Ijesa Isu-Ekiti to a safer town where he could visit them in peace.

Oguntuase noted he was only in Ijesa Isu-Ekiti to move his remaining property to a new house which he hired in another town.

He appealed to Gov. Fayemi to eradicate kidnapping and restore peace to the community.

Between March 21 and March 30, a total of 21 persons were kidnapped along Ijesa Isu-Ekiti to Ikole-Ekiti Road after which huge ransoms were paid for their release.

Youths in the community consequently staged a public protest against the kidnaps.

APC leaders protest alleged ‘unfair treatment’ in sharing political offices

Some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ado-Ekiti Constituency 1, Ekiti state, have alleged “unfair treatment” in the sharing of political offices in the state.

They made this known in a protest letter to the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti and made available to newsmen.

The letter titled, “Inequality, unfairness and marginalisation in political office sharing to Ado Constituency 1” was signed by seven wards chairmen, women leaders, youth leaders, secretaries and councilors in the constituency.

According to them, Ado-Ekiti Constituency 1 with the largest voting strength in the metropolis, has only 28 political appointees, while Ado-Ekiti Constituency 2, has more than 31 appointments in the present dispensation.

The aggrieved APC members alleged that they have been shortchanged by “unfair and unacceptable sharing formula”.

The leaders said that though they had let go the anomaly in the interest of the party, they needed to present their grievances to the governor to ensure fairness, justice and equity in the next dispensation.

They said: “Ado-Ekiti Constituency 1 is embittered at the way and manner our collective interest has been shortchanged in the sharing of political positions.

“It is our belief and this has been our stand all the while that APC success is our success, but in a situation where political appointments were lopsidedly shared and uneven allocated between constituencies within the metropolis is no longer acceptable to us and it is becoming counter productive”.

They warned that concentration of political appointments in one geographical area of an environment gives room for a drift loyalty, particularly when it get to the point of “the-power-that-be” not being sensitive enough to correct the anomalies.

They reminded the leadership of APC in the state that the opposition party, particularly the Social Democratic Party (SDP), had picked its deputy governorship candidate from the Ado-Ekiti Constituency 1.

The aggrieved APC members said that if something urgent was not done to salvage the situation, the opposition party may take advantage of the voting strength of the geographical area.

“The only thing that we all believe is for the leadership of APC to considerably focus attention to Ado-Ekiti Constituency 1 through zoning of elective positions to the constituency.

“If all these our agitations are not attended to and ensure that they are corrected on time, it is no threat that we may lose the constituency to the opposition that has picked it’s running mate from our constituency,” they said.

The aggrieved members also copied the State Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi; and a former Deputy Governor in the State, Mrs Modupe Adelabu; as well as Chairmen of the party in state and Ado-Ekiti Local Government.

Ekiti APC Chairman, urge members to focus energy on governorship election

Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti, Mr Paul Omotosho, has appealed to members to campaign solely for the June 18 gubernatorial election in the state rather than jostling for other elective positions.

Omotosho said that winning the governorship election would serve as the pedestal to winning other elective positions in the state.

“Mr Biodun Oyebanji is our governorship candidate and we must ensure victory for him at the election. It is important that we all come together and work for him.

“Any member aspiring for any other elective position must first work for the victory of our flag bearer at the governorship poll since that is the only way the party can attain other heights in Ekiti politics,’’ the chairman said.

He was addressing a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ado-Ekiti to review the outcome of the March 26 national convention of the party.

Members from the 16 local government areas of the state attended the meeting where the chairman lauded them for their commitment to party activities.

His charge was made known on Wednesday at Ado-Ekiti in a statement issued by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Segun Dipe.

Omotosho enjoined members to be more determined to ensure that the party emerged victorious at the June 18 election.

He also charged members, especially political appointees, to return to their wards and be actively involved in the campaign by providing both moral and financial support for canvassers.

Speaking at the meeting, Gov. Kayode Fayemi observed that members had more than enough issues to campaign with, considering the number of projects executed by his administration.

Fayemi said that the party’s continuity agenda was sustainable and should be the bedrock of the coming campaign.

Dipe stated that other matters discussed at the meeting were the flag-off of the governorship campaign, and how to embark on “house-to-house’’ canvassing for votes that would begin soon.

Sixteen out of the 18 recognised political parties will contest the election according to a list released in March by INEC.

Ekiti: Fayemi’s aide resigns, to support Segun Oni

Mr Olaiya Kupolati, Senior Special Assistant on Electoral Matters to Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state, has resigned.

In a letter dated March 23, addressed to the Secretary to the State Government in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, Kupolato said his resignation took effect from March 30.

Kupolati said he has also defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), on whose platform he aspired to contest for the state House of Assembly seat.

He said he will formally join the SDP at his ward in Iye Ekiti, Ilejemeje Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

Kupolati said that his resignation was in line with the provisions of the new Electoral Act.

He appreciated the governor for giving him the opportunity to serve the good people of Ekiti state.

“I perceive former Gov. Segun Oni as the best man for Ekiti after Fayemi at this trying time and I am ready to support him.

“The former governor is a man of the people. A man of integrity, with unblemished records.

“He has a better pedigree. He performed very well while in office in his first term, so he deserves a reelection by every standard.

“I am also following the trend in town, especially my people in Ilejemeje, they are totally for Segun Oni and as a good leader and community person, I don’t want to work against the wish of my constituents,” he said.

Kupolato said that it would be a gross betrayal of trust, if he work against the wish of his people, in the June 18 governorship poll.

  • Fayemi Is eminently qualified, competent to lead Nigeria – Afenifere

Fayemi Is eminently qualified, competent to lead Nigeria – Afenifere

A Local Government Chairman in Ekiti State and Publicity Secretary of the Afenifere Renewal Group, Mr Michael Ogungbemi, has declared that the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has the requisite qualifications and competence to lead Nigeria to a greater height if elected President.

He described Fayemi as one of the few eggheads within the All Progressives Congress (APC) enclave in the Southwest, who can be trusted with power, having exhibited his mettle thrice as a state governor, federal minister and Chairman of Nigeria’s governors’ Forum.

Mr Ogungbemi, who is the Chairman of Ajoni Local Council Development Area, made this known on Monday during a chat with newsmen at Iyemero-Ekiti, his country home.

He said without a scintilla of doubt, Gov. Fayemi had garnered enough of cognate experience in politics to lead Nigerians to greater height of development, prosperity and enviable standard that can usher in all-round transformation that would benefit every citizen, regardless of status.

Ogungbemi expressed confidence in the governor’s competence, capability, capacity and strong character to lead the country and unite all ethnic groups in such a fashion that can guarantee unity of purpose to be able to defeat all adversaries.

Ogungbemi said: “As a seasoned and respectable professional, administrator and technocrat in Nigeria and across the world, Dr Fayemi will elevate to a national status the magical “Rescue Mission” he brought to Ekiti in 2010 that had radicalised the land and rejigged the economic, political and social systems in an enigmatic fashion.

“Dr Fayemi’s experience as a Historian, Political Scientist and War Expert specializing in Civil-Military Relations, are indicative of the fact that he has the requisite knowledge and sound understanding apart from being well informed” to lead the country.

Tracing Gov. Fayemi’s scholarly contributions to national and global growth, Mr Ogungbemi said: “Some of his research and policy interests include democratization, constitutionalism, security sector governance and regionalism in the global context – an indicator that he had gone through the right democratic tutelage”.

“With the presidential ticket oscillating to the Southwest in 2023, Ekiti from the Old Ondo Province will produce the next Nigerian President and Fayemi has the advantage of age on his side, Christian background and a liberal Nigerian leader

“Added to these is the fact that he is an International scholar, respectable researcher, thorough-bred and well respected Nigerian politician with a workable document for the development of Nigeria, known as “Development Agenda for Progressive Nigeria”.

Ogungbemi noted that Nigeria is in dire need of a young, credible, vibrant, knowledgeable and energetic democratic leader like Dr Fayemi with impressive and sound political and democratic credentials, to provide leadership direction to usher the country into prosperity in 2023.
