    Apongbon market inferno leaves shops destroyed

    Fire, which broke out on Wednesday morning, has destroyed many shops at Apongbon market on Lagos Island.

    The fire caused a gridlock on the Eko Bridge.

    As at press time, the cause of the inferno was yet to be known, as men of the Federal and Lagos Fire Services were seen at the scene of the incident trying to put out the fire.

    In a tweet via its Twitter handle, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announced that the fire outbreak has resulted in the slow movement of motorists and advised that they use alternative routes.

    It tweeted: “There’s currently fire incidence underneath Eko Bridge which has resulted to slow movement of motorists.

    “Motorists who are yet to connect Eko Bridge are advised to use alternative routes such as Third-Mainland Bridge and Carter Bridge.

    “Emergency Responding Agencies like Fire Service, LASEMA, LASTMA are all on ground.”

    Nigerian-born comedian, and compere, Josh Alfred popularly known as Josh2funny, and his brothers escaped an armed robbery attack on New Year’s day.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the ugly incident happened on Eko bridge, Lagos State as the robbers smashed the vehicle Josh2funny and his brothers were in with bottles.

    Known for his hilarious comedy skits, Josh2funny said: “Armed robbers for Eko bridge, see wetin dem do o. Carry bottle, smashed [our] moving vehicle.

    “If no be say God dey alive, na wetin we for dey talk now? We just escaped robbery. First of January. Dem don fail”.

    TNG reports in the vehicle with Josh2funny, whom he refers to as brothers, are comedian Davidsyn and Bello Khabir Olajide, popularly known as Bello Kreb.

    FG reopens Eko Bridge, commences repair of airport flyover

    The Federal Government has announced the reopening of Eko Bridge, which had been under repairs, to traffic on Friday (today), August 13.

    The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, in a statement on Thursday night, said the 10-week rehabilitation works on Eko Bridge was completed on schedule.

    He also said traffic would be diverted for the rehabilitation of the burnt Lagos Airport flyover from Aug. 13.

    “The Alaka to Costain section of Eko bridge which was closed to traffic since 4th June, 2021 will now be opened on Friday 13th Aug. 2021.

    “The Honorable Minister of Works and Housing thanks the motoring public for their cooperation while the rehabilitation work was ongoing,” he said.

    He added that additional works to be carried out on the Eko bridge would not require closure.

    TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Eko Bridge was shut on June 4, with traffic diverted for the second phase of the rehabilitation of the Costain-bound section of the bridge.

    Popoola also said traffic diversion towards the rehabilitation of the burnt Airport flyover bridge in Lagos would begin from Friday, Aug. 13 until Sept. 22.

    Eko Bridge shut for 10-week emergency repairs, alternative routes announced

    Lagos State Government has announced 10 weeks partial closure of Eko Bridge from Costain to Alaka in bound National Stadium for emergency repairs by Federal Government from June 4 to Aug. 13.
    The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, said in a statement that the repair was necessary to complete the rehabilitation works at the opposite side of the bridge earlier embarked upon by the Federal Government, hence the need for a notice of routes diversion.
    He said that pending the commencement of the rehabilitation works, alternative routes have been made available for the awareness of motorists, to manage traffic during the period of repairs as highlighted below;
    ” Traffic from Apongbon to Alaka, Stadium, Inner Surulere or Ikorodu Road will be diverted to Eko Bridge to access Costain Roundabout to Iponri through Alaka and Funso Williams Avenue.
    ” Similarly, motorists from Eko bridge will have to navigate their desired destinations through Costain Roundabout to Abebe Village( by Nigerian Breweries Plc) through Eric Moore to Bode Thomas to Adeniran Ogunsanya, to access Shitta Roundabout by Stadium under bridge to Funso Williams Avenue to Dorman-Long Bridge and Fadeyi-Ikorodu Road.
    “Motorists can gain access to Apongbon through CMS Outer Marina Road to connect Ebute Metta Ikorodu Road to access their destinations.
    ” Motorists from Apongbon can pass through CMS to Outer Marina to Adeniji Adele, Third Mainland Bridge, Adekunle to Herbert Macaulay Way, Jibowu and Ikorodu road will also be available,” Oladeinde said.
    He appealed to residents of the state, especially motorists that ply these corridors, to take note of the diversion routes.
    The commissioner further urged motorists to bear the inconveniences, as the project was aimed at achieving a seamless, safe and efficient transport system that would meet the transportation needs of a larger population.
    He, however, advised road users to comply with directives from the State’s Traffic Management Personnel.
    “In like manners traffic directions and road signals would be made available to minimize inconveniences that may be experienced while the construction work lasts,” he said.

    Repairs: Fashola orders re-opening of Eko, Marine Bridges Monday

    After concluding urgent repair works on Eko and Marine Bridges in Lagos, the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has directed that both bridges be reopened to traffic on Monday.

    The approval for the reopening of the completed First Phase of the repairs on the Bridges by midnight on Sunday 18th of October, which was given by the Minister on Friday was sequel to the report by the contractor handling the projects, Messrs. Buildwell Plant & Equipment Industries Limited that the repair works on the First Phase had been completed 100 percent.

    In his directives for the reopening of the bridges, Fashola thanked Lagosians for their patience, understanding and cooperation while sections of the bridges were closed.

    He also directed that members of the public should be informed of any restrictions to traffic while work was ongoing on the Second Phase of the project.

    The Minister added that while the completed section of the Eko Bridge (Lagos Island bound) should be reopened to traffic, work should commence immediately on the Alaka bound side of the project.

    Explaining further on the next phase of repair works on the bridges, the Director, Highways (Bridges & Designs) in the Ministry, Engr. Emmanuel Adeoye, said work was taking off without the need for either partial or complete closure of the bridges, adding, however, that the public would be informed adequately should such a step become necessary.

    The 1,350 metre Eko Bridge, built in phases between 1965 and 1975, links the Lagos Island to the Mainland. It was closed to traffic in March this year in order to replace faulty joints and bearings. But, as a result of COVID-19 lockdown, actual repair works commenced in the first week of June.

    Work commenced in May on the first of the three phases in which repair works on the Marine Bridge was divided.

    The repairs on the bridge, which is part of a network of complex bridges with several loops taking traffic in and out of the Apapa area of Lagos, included jacketing and skin repairs of the piers, lifting the bridge section deck in order to change the electrometric bearing, milling and placing a new wearing course of asphalt among others.

    The repair works on the Eko and Marine Bridges is part of the ongoing Federal Government’s bridge maintenance programme which involves the repairs and rehabilitation of over 37 bridges nationwide with a substantial number already completed while others are at different stages of completion.

    ALERT: FG shuts Alaka Bridge in Lagos

    The Federal Government on Tuesday night shut the Alaka Bridge linking Eko Bridge in Lagos for repairs to prevent its total collapse, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    NAN reports that officials from both Lagos State Ministry and Federal Ministry of Works and their Transportation counterparts converged on the bridge at about 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday for the emergency closure.

    The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Adedamola Kuti, told NAN in a telephone interview, that the emergency closure was to prevent total collapse of the bridge.

    “We are all here closing the Alaka to Costain portion of the Eko Bridge because some bearings are bad.

    “We just discovered that the bearings are broken and we are here to shut it down for the safety of motorists.

    “We are shutting it down now so that we can carry out full investigations on the extent of damage to the bearings to begin the repairs,’’ Kuti said.

    He explained that only Alaka flyover portion from Alaka to Costain section of the Eko Bridge was bad but from Costain Bus stop area beside the National Theatre is in good condition.

    The Controller said that the traffic regulatory agencies were on ground to ensure that impact of gridlock as a result of the closure was minimized when commuters use the road on Wednesday morning.

    He advised motorists going to Lagos Island to connect the Eko Bridge through the service lane at Alaka through Iponrin to Costain Bus Stop area to connect the bridge.

    He also advised use of the National Theatre, as alternative route to connect the Eko Bridge on the other side.
