In a communiqué signed by Senators Orji Uzor Kalu, Ike Ekweremadu, Anyim Pius Anyim, and others at the end of a bipartisan meeting at Igbere, Bende Council, Abia State; the South East leaders noted that the presidency has rotated between Northern and Southern Nigeria and among various geopolitical zones with only the South East left out.

Amechi O. Danis; Sen. Obinna Ogba; Rep. Makwe Livinus M; Dr. Oliver Osi;; Hon Ali Okechukwu; Hon Stanley Ohajuruka.

The communiqué further stated that the South East as a major geopolitical zone in Nigeria and Ndigbo, being one of the three predominant tribes in the country, must take its rightful position in national polity.

“The Presidency has rotated between Northern and Southern Nigeria and among the various geopolitical zones. Thus, the South West and South-South geopolitical zones in the southern part of the country have produced the President of Nigeria in the persons of His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

“Hence as power is expected to rotate to the South in 2023, the leaders noted that the South East is the only zone in the South that is yet to produce a President of Nigeria in the current democratic dispensation. “With the support of other geopolitical zones and ethnic groups, the position of Nigerian President in the 2023 general elections in all political parties should be zoned to the South East for the sake of justice, fairness, and equity. READ THE COMMUNIQUE IN FULL:

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF A CROSS-PARTY MEETING OF SOUTH EAST POLITICAL LEADERS AT IGBERE, ABIA STATE, ON JANUARY 5, 2021.

    Preamble

Political leaders of the South East across all political persuasions met at Igbere, Abia State, on January 5, 2021 to discuss the political future of the geopolitical zone vis-à-vis the 2023 general election.

    Observations

The meeting recalled that Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious divides fought hard, long, and collectively to enthrone the current democratic dispensation as the surest way to engender national development and guarantee a just and equitable society where every section of the country enjoys a sense of belonging.

The meeting observed that the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has rotated between Northern and Southern Nigeria and among the various geopolitical zones. Thus, the South West and South South geopolitical zones in the southern part of the country have produced the President of Nigeria . Hence as power is expected to rotate to the South in 2023, the meeting noted that the South East is the only zone in the South that is yet to produce a President of Nigeria in the current democratic dispensation.

The meeting further observed that the people of the South East have continued to demonstrate their commitment to the unity and development of the country. Not only has the geopolitical zone actively supported the emergence of Nigerian President of other geopolitical extractions, the people are also known to be major agents of development and heavy investors outside their zone and often the next in population after the indigenes in any state of Nigeria. Our well-pronounced presence and investments in every nook and cranny of the country represent the firmest and most practical demonstration of faith in the unity, peace, and continued corporate existence of the country, for where a man’s treasure is, there his heart lies also.

    Resolutions/Demands

In view of the above and after exhaustive and incisive deliberations, South East political leaders resolved to:

    1. Recommit ourselves to the deepening of the nation’s democracy as the surest way of fast-tracking national development and building an egalitarian society where no man is oppressed for reasons of his class, ethnic, religious or political affiliation and background.

    2. Implore Nigerians across political, ethnic, religious, and geopolitical divides and persuasions to support the people of the South East geopolitical zone to produce a Nigerian President of South East extraction as a mark of good faith and to promote justice and national harmony. For emphasis, we deem this very important in giving every part of the country a sense of belonging and in promoting national unity and solidarity. It is the loudest reassurance of equality of all parts and that the country indeed belongs to all members of the Nigerian commonwealth

    3. Consequently implore all the political parties to cede their presidential tickets in the 2023 general election to the South East in the interest of justice, equity and national unity. To make good our demand and reciprocate such good faith, we have decided, as a geopolitical zone with substantial presence in every part of the country to give a block vote and throw our full weight behind any major political party, particularly the APC and PDP, that zones its presidential ticket to the South East in 2023 general election. We resolved to work for such a party irrespective of our different individual political parties.

    4. To emphasis that what we seek is a Nigerian President of South East extraction, one that will work to further unite and develop every part of the country. Such a President will be President of all Nigerians irrespective of their political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, ensuring that all citizens and every part of the country is given a sense of belonging and treated with utmost sense of justice. Such was the dream of the founding fathers of this great nation wherefore they declared that though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand. For the same reason, they also committed to building a just nation where no man is oppressed so that Nigeria may be blessed with peace, plenty, and prosperity.

    5. Wish Nigerians a happy and prosperous New Year.

I’m not Ekweremadu, you can’t intimidate me, Wike blasts IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Monday said leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu cannot intimidate him.

He said he is not Senator Ike Ekweremadu who was harassed by IPOB members when he traveled out of the country.

Wike was reacting to alleged threat to his life by Kanu whenever he travelled out of the country.

Wike said; “I will walk around Europe or anywhere without looking back, I’m not Ekweremadu, no one can intimidate me.”

The governor also justified the presence of military operation in Oyigbo area of the State.

The military has been in Oyigbo for the past 10 days.

He said that although he did personally invited them to go to Oyigbo, as he has not been a good friend of the military, the killing of six soldiers, policemen and burning of police stations were enough invitation for the military.

“I have never been a friend to the Nigerian Army. I did not send the military to Oyigbo. I am not loved by them.
They are sponsoring a propaganda against me by saying I invited the army to kill Igbo people.”

He stated that when “you kill soldiers and policemen and burn down stations, do you expect them, especially the army to go away?”

On the issue of the curfew in Oyigbo, Wike said it was for the interest of the residents there, insisting that whatever it takes for members of IPOB not Igbos to leave Oyigbo, they should do so.

He, however, promised that the State Security Council would be meeting on Tuesday, to review the security situation in the state, particularly in Oyigbo LGA.

Wike revealed that members of IPOB erected a shrine in Oyigbo, had the effrontery to erect IPOB’s flag there with the photos of Nnamdi Kanu symbolising that Oyigbo is a conquered territory and governed by Kanu.

“There are shrines in Oyigbo owned by IPOB members, when you go there you see IPOB flag and Kanu’s picture in the shrine. I can’t fold my arms and watch people destroy my state, not just destroying, but also annexing my state into what they are doing,” he said.

Wike, who disclosed this on a live Television Programme in Port Harcourt said he knew who is sending the IPOB members to the State because they were interested in running for the Presidency.

“I have relationship with the Igbo, if they want to run for president, I can support them, it doesn’t mean I’m Igbo, I can’t change my identity,” he said.

On the allegations that he is killing the Igbo, Wike explained that he has a long standing relationship with the Igbo, but queried why he should kill Igbo in Oyigbo and not kill the ones in Port Harcourt? He said the propaganda did make sense.

  • Sen. Ekwereamadu mourns Abba Kyari

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, (PDP Enugu-West) has joined other well-meaning Nigerians in mourning the late Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mallam Abba Kyari.

Ekweremadu, on his Twitter handle, @iamekweremadu, expressed deep sadness and heartfelt condolences to Kyari’s immediate family, President Buhari and the entire Presidency.

He also prayed to God to grant the soul of the deceased eternal repose.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing on of the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mallam Abba Kyari.

“It is a heavy loss to The Presidency and the nation, which he gave his all.

“My heartfelt condolences go to his family, the Presidency and the entire nation.

“May his soul rest in peace. Amen,’’ Ekweremadu prayed.

  • Court quashes assets declaration case against Ekweremadu

A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out non-declaration of assets charged filed against former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu by the now disbanded Special Presidential Investigation Panel (SPIP) for the Recovery of Public Property.

In 2018, the SPIP, led by Okoi Obono-Obla, alleged, among others, that Ekweremadu, “without reasonable excuse, refused and neglected to declare his assets upon being served a notice to declare”.

When President Muhammadu Buhari disbanded the panel and sacked its head, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) took over all the cases started by the panel, one of which is against Ekweremadu.

At the mention of the case on Monday, Ekweremadu, who was in court, entered the dock.

Prosecuting lawyer Pius Akutah (an official of the Federal Ministry of Justice) claimed that the lawyer who was handling the case while the SPIP was still intact had allegedly disappeared with the case file.

Akutah urged the court to order the lawyer (whose name he did not mention) to release the case file to the AGF’s office to enable it proceed with the prosecution.

But Ekweremadu’s lawyer Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) said the prosecution lawyer’s position did not reflect a party that was diligent in handling its case.

Awomolo urged the court to reject the prosecution’s request, strike out the charge and free his client.

Ruling, Justice Binta Nyako rejected Akutah’s request, struck out the charge and said the prosecution was at liberty to refile when it wishes.

She added: “You should know what to do. You should not be waiting for me to make an order against an individual.

“So, as it is today, you don’t know the case against the defendant since you don’t have the file. I am going to strike out the case. When you are ready, you can come back.

“The case is hereby struck out for want of diligent prosecution. The prosecution is allowed to come back whenever they are ready to proceed with the case.”

  • Ninth NASS poll: Ekweremadu’s political faux pas, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
The most timid and lame excuse for entering into an elective contest – the exalted position of the Senate Deputy President for that matter – was offered by Prof. Ike Ekweremadu on Tuesday, June 11, 2019. It’s at the inauguration of the Ninth National Assembly.
The 107 (of the 109) Senators-elect present had just chosen former Senate Leader, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, as the Senate President. He defeated his sole opponent and also a former Senate Leader, Mr. Ali Ndume, by 79 votes to 28 votes – a margin of 51 votes.
The presiding officer for the inauguration and Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Mohammed Sani-Omolori, then called for nomination for the position of Senate Deputy President, and Mr. Ovie Omo-Agege was nominated.
A call for any further nomination threw up Senator Ekweremadu, who relinquished the seat on June 6, 2019, when the Eight National Assembly was formally dissolved. He had held the same position for 12 years, from 2007 to 2019.
Following the nomination, a hush fell on the noisy floor of the ‘Red Chamber’ – an indication of surprise by the Senators-elect, as Ekweremadu was never in the jostle for any of the leadership positions.
So, how did it happen? It’s on the spur of the moment, as he supplied. According to him, his decision at the last minute was to redress alleged desecration of the “Hallowed Chambers” by Senator Omo-Agege on April 18, 2018.
On that day, while Ekweremadu was presiding, “political thugs,” accusingly sponsored, and directed by Omo-Agege, invaded the Senate, assaulted some lawmakers and staff of the chamber, and made away with the Mace, the symbol of authority of the Parliament.
In his nomination speech, and as he fielded questions from the press, Ekweremadu said he wanted his colleagues to use the election as a referendum on Omo-Agege.
In other words, he wasn’t in the race to compete, but to stop Omo-Agege from being rewarded for his alleged sponsorship of thugs to invade the National Assembly. Fair enough! But it beggars the question: Would he have declined the seat if he had defeated Omo-Agege?
Well, it’s clear that Ekweremadu’s untenable excuse was to cover up his “inordinate ambition” for an unbroken record four-time occupation of the office. But he didn’t bring this desire to his opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The minority PDP in the National Assembly, relying on its assumed political adroitness, didn’t go to sleep, and allowed its bitter rival (APC) to have its way it couldn’t find in 2015.
It threw its weight behind two APC “renegades,” Senator Ndume and Rep. Bago, who vied against the party’s endorsed candidates, Lawan and Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, for the position of Senate President and House Speaker, respectively.
The PDP backing, conveyed on the eve of the inauguration, said the final resolution on Ndume and Bago was reached at the end of a “decisive meeting” of the party’s leaders, and urged that all senators and members-elect on its platform “are to be guided accordingly.”
If Ekweremadu were in the picture, the party would have factored him in, and made it public. He appeared on a solo run and that, perhaps, explains his summoning of a meeting in his home at the Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, after the PDP leaders had announced their backing for Ndume and Bago on June 10.
Indeed, Ekweremadu said his resolve to vie was taken that Tuesday, June 11 – in the morning of the inauguration. As he told newsmen, the decision was made “because actually, we weren’t minded to run for any office, but we thought that our friends in APC will be able to come up with another candidate to replace Ovie Omo-Agege.”
Definitely, Ekweremadu’s ambition was laced with malice! Because the APC, which isn’t his platform, failed to “replace” Omo-Agege with another candidate, he decided to force himself on the Senators-elect. Or did he have recourse to the PDP caucus?
Evidently hiding under the canopy of the PDP, he joined other ambitious members-elect in the legislature to unnecessarily heat-up the polity with boastful campaigns, and resort to religious, ethnic and regional divides to gain undue advantage.
They probably wished for a repeat of the 2015 scenario in which the majority political party, the APC, was ambushed by two of its “non-conformist” members and their allies in the party.
Working in cahoots with the PDP, Senator Bukola Saraki and Rep. Yakubu Dogara denied the APC the joy of having its “preferred candidates” mount the rostrums of the Senate President and House Speaker.
Having secured the posts for themselves, Saraki in particular, guaranteed that the minority PDP, unprecedentedly in a democratic setting, produced the Senate Deputy President in Ekweremadu.
As it’s in 2015, the APC in 2019 has the majority in the Senate and House of Representatives to swing the votes in its favour – a factor that wasn’t lost on the National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
The former governor of Edo State boasted that this time, the APC wouldn’t share, in whatever guise, the principal offices with the PDP, which, once again, wanted to muddy the waters for the APC.
And he’s right. Besides having the majority, the APC was more cohesive, determined and energized to deliver the presiding officers’ positions to its contesting members-elect, as firstly demonstrated in the landslide victory of Senator Lawan over a boastful Senator Ndume.
That sent a clear and unambiguous message. And yet, Senator Ekweremadu, for the fleetest moment, guessed that as many as the APC members, and even PDP members that ensured his “default” election in 2015, would repeat the same “mistake” in 2019. It’s a costly political miscalculation!
The moral of the inauguration of the Ninth National Assembly is that in democracy, people should be allowed the opportunity to ventilate their aspirations, and test their popularity, such as has humbled Senators Ndume and Ekweremadu, and Rep. Bago.
No wonder Oshiomhole summed up the poll as APC’s “finest hour, particularly when you bear in mind what happened in 2015. It is the mischief of 2015 that we have tried to correct, and I am happy that it has been settled!”

  • I now have time to rest, says Ekweremadu after defeat

I now have time to rest, says Ekweremadu after defeat

A former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, says he is not discouraged by his loss to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who defeated him in the deputy senate election.

Ekweremadu, who was deputy senate president from 2007 to 2011; 2011-2015 and 2015 to 2019; said now that he s no longer in power, he will have time to focus on other things.

He said he ran for the office of the Deputy Senate president to make a statement.

Speaking with journalists after losing the contest, the Peoples Democratic Party stalwart said he only made the decision to contest a few hours before the inauguration of the Senate.

Omo-Agege polled 68 votes to defeat Ekweremadu who polled 37 votes.

Ekweremadu lamented that Omo-Agege, who was accused of snatching the Senate’s mace in 2018, could be rewarded with such a position.

He said, “We need to exonerate ourselves. It was not a contest to win or lose; I wanted to make a statement. For over 20 years, I have been very busy with politics and governance. So, I think I can have a rest and reflect on other things.

“I believe there must be a referendum. Look at what happened on a day I was presiding and the chamber was invaded. It is embarrassing that someone who led that operation will take a bow and endorsed and we all work home like it doesn’t matter.

“I wanted a situation where we could present a referendum in respect of what transpired.”

Ekweremadu said he thought the All Progressives Congress would produce a consensus candidate that we can all be proud of.

  • Ninth Assembly will rise above political, ethnic divides – Ekweremadu

Ninth Assembly will rise above political, ethnic divides – Ekweremadu

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has said that the 9th National Assembly will rise above political, religious, and ethnic divides to address the myriads of challenges facing Nigerians.

Speaking during the dinner to mark the end of the orientation programme organised for Ninth National Assembly members-elect, Ekweremadu described the institution as Nigeria in microcosm.

He stressed that bringing together the members-elect from across the country had not only helped them to garner basic legislative knowledge but familiarise them with one another and better appreciate peculiar challenges faced by various parts of Nigeria.

He said: “After elections comes the onerous business of governance, and I am greatly encouraged by the enthusiasm and determination of distinguished senators and honourable members-elect to rise above narrow politics.

It gladdens the heart that members-elect are aware that once sworn in as distinguished senators and honourable members, we are bound by our oath of office and rules to always act in the overall interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well-being and prosperity of Nigeria.

We are bound by these instruments to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

We may all have come in different vehicles as represented by our various political parties, but poverty and hunger faced by the masses of Nigeria have no political party.”

The lawmaker added that “we may profess different religions, but the insecurity taking a toll on our people has no religion.

Therefore, it is imperative and we are indeed inclined to work as a team for the peace, justice, equity and national prosperity, irrespective of political leanings and diversities.

Ours is a call to service, a call to deliver democracy dividends, a call to meet the expectations of our people, and a call to ensure that the government of Nigeria works for the people, and I have no doubt that we will deliver on our mandates.”

Ekweremadu urged them to remain true to the oath of allegiance they would take on the inauguration day to serve the people.

  • 2019: Ekweremadu speaks on dumping Atiku, PDP

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has described as untrue, reports purporting division in the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2019 General Elections.

Ekweremadu, who made this known in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Uche Anichukwu on Monday, described the reports as “fake news, cheap blackmail, smear campaign and extreme propaganda.”

He urged party faithful and supporters not to be distracted by “the lie mills” as the nation approached the critical stages of the 2019 elections, but to remain focused.

My attention has been drawn to the orchestrated attempts by some characters to create the impression of a divided house in Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the coming presidential election.

Such characters dish out fake and divisive stories without source on a daily basis and attribute same to me.

I refuse to be distracted by such cheap blackmail, smear campaign, and extreme propaganda,” he said.

According to him, it is important to reassure PDP supporters that the party is united and focused.

After the PDP lost the presidency and majority status at the National Assembly in 2015, I made it clear that I would stand by the party, no matter what.

It took other party stakeholders and I a lot of efforts, sacrifices, soul-searching and painstaking negotiations to hold the party together and rebuild it.

If I did not abandon the PDP at its darkest hour, it does not make the slightest sense to say that I abandoned it now that its sun is rising again.

Meanwhile, I have held separate meetings with our Vice Presidential candidate, Peter Obi and the Chairman, South East Governors Forum, Dave Umahi, to work out strategies for the success of our party and candidates in the coming elections.

We are also setting up a meeting of South East PDP stakeholders by weekend to continue to strategise on the coming elections,” he said.

  • PDP speaks on Ekweremadu, South-East govs allegedly working for Buhari’s reelection

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied the statement attributed to the Buhari Media Organisation that the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and South-East governors were working for President Muhammadu Buhari’s reelection.

A statement by the party after its meeting with party leaders in the zone accused the All Progressives Congress of inciting the people of the region against Ekweremadu and the PDP governors in the zone.

The statement signed by the Publicity Secretary for the PDP in the South-East, Dr Chijioke Ekwegh, said the BMO was only playing mind games.

The PDP said apart from poverty, insecurity, electoral fraud, unemployment, gagging the press, nepotism and corruption, the Buhari administration had not achieved anything tangible since 2015.

The opposition party urged Nigerians to reject Buhari and vote for its candidate Atiku Abubakar in next month’s presidential poll.

The statement partly read, “The attention of the South-East zone of the PDP has been drawn to an amateurish propaganda by the Buhari Media Organisation, a pro-All Progressives Congress group, wherein it claimed that Ike Ekweremadu and South-East PDP governors of PDP were working for APC’s victory in the 2019 presidential election.

The fact that it came from the BMO clearly shows that it is a lie from the pit of hell meant to divide and disorganise the PDP ahead of the general elections.

This misadventure by the BMO has, however, helped to expose the source of the lingering attempt to run down our party leaders in the zone, incite the people against them, and create bad blood among Ndigbo. Although we are in an election season, such extreme propaganda and mind games can’t be tolerated.

The PDP remains one big family and every attempt, such as this, to play on our intelligence cannot stand.”

Meanwhile, the pan-Igbo sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has faulted Buhari’s claim that his administration has been fair to the South-East.

Spokesman for the group, Uche Achi-Okpaga, told our correspondent that Buhari was being “economical with the truth”.

The President said during an interview on Arise TV on Monday that he had been fair to the South-East, in spite of the poor low votes (198,000) he got from the region in the 2015 presidential election.

He said though any local government could have given him the figure he got from the zone, he appointed ministers from the region to key positions in his government. But Achi-Okpaga said the appointment of ministers was a statutory matter which made every state entitled to one in line with the constitution of the country.

The spokesman said, “Is that a favour? That is a statutory matter; if it were not so, he (Buhari) would not have appointed any one from the South-East.

Apart from ministerial appointments, what other appointment has he made from the zone? Let him tell us. In all ramifications, he has not been fair to the Igbo. He is being economical with the truth.”
