  • Another whistle-blower in trouble over false information on Ekweremadu

For allegedly providing false information to the police in connection with the raid on the house of Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, an Abuja Magistrates’ Court has remanded a whistle blower, Ahmed Echoda, in prison.

Echoda was arraigned on Tuesday for allegedly misleading the Nigerian Police with information that led to the raid on Friday.

Although the one-count charge indicated two defendants, only Echoda was present in court to take his plea.

According to the charge, the men, Echodo and Maiwada Adamu were accused of conspiring to falsely inform the office of the IGP that Ekweremadu’s residence at number 10 Ganges Street, Maitama, Abuja and occupied by Oliver Ogenyi is being maintained and used for criminal activities, such as the maintenance of arms and ammunition.

Echodo pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Umar Kagarko subsequently ordered that he be remanded in prison pending ruling on his bail application fixed for June 5.

Recall that TheNewsGuru.com had earlier reported that Ekweremadu’s house [his official Guest House in Maitama, Abuja] was on Saturday said was raided by the Police on Friday.

The deputy senate president commended the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris for prosecuting the false whistle blower.

  • Biafra Day celebration: No group should force people to stay at home – Ekweremadu

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremmadu, has advised that Biafra Day celebration as well as the sit-at-home order declared by some right groups in South-East for May 30 should be optional.

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra had called on citizens of South-East to stay at home on May 30 to observe their anniversary.

Ekweremmadu gave the advice on Sunday at an Inter-denominational church service at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Abakaliki, to commemorate 2017 Democracy Day and Gov. David Umahi’s second year in office.

He noted that while the agitation and concerns of the groups are genuine, they should not be pursued with force or other forms of armed struggle.

“Individuals who operate private businesses and want to stay-at-home on that day should stay, while those who want to operate their businesses should be allowed to do so.

“I believe that civil and public workers should be ready to go to work on that day as I appeal that no group should force people to stay at home against their wishes,” he added.

The deputy senate president called on the agitators to embrace dialogue and constructive engagement in pursuing their agitation; not coercion or other forms of armed struggle.

“The struggles and concerns are genuine but with the collaboration of all and constructive engagement, we will surely get to our destination no matter how long it takes.

“Black Americans agitated for a long time before Barack Obama became president in 2008, likewise in India, it took constructive engagement for the people to actualise their agitation.

“South Africa despite racial disturbances and black oppression, employed constructive engagement and intervention of the western world and African interests such as Nigeria’s, to dismantle apartheid,” he said.

Ekweremadu congratulated the people of Ebonyi on the second year in office of their governor.

He noted that the state had matured politically and socially, adding that any indigene could aspire for any political office in the state.

In his remark, Umahi noted that no individual or group would force the citizens of the state to stay-at-home on May 30.

“I have met the leadership of these groups on various occasions and discovered that most of their agitations are correct but the ways they seek to actualise them can be faulted.

“I have also met the leadership of market unions in the state and we resolved that markets would be open on that day and no trader or any other individual will be molested,” he said.

The governor said that the case of Ebonyi was different as the state had suffered untold marginalisation right from its days in old Anambra, Imo, Enugu and Abia states.

“The deputy senate president is fighting marginalisation of the Igbos at the federal level; when this is addressed, we will start our own agitation of marginalisation as a state.

“Ebonyi does not believe in regional government because we will continue suffering deprivation but believe in the restructuring of the country to address all imbalances,” he said.

In his homily, Rev. Fr Abraham Nwali urged political and economic leaders in the state to build industries instead of embarking on ‘non-direct-impact’ projects such as hotels.
“The governor should be supported in his desire to ensure that sachet water companies are constructed in the three senatorial zones of the state,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prayers were said by officiating ministers of the Presbyterian Church for the unity of the country and peace in Ebonyi. (NAN)

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu has said that men of the Nigeria Police Force from the Inspector- General of Police Special Squad, raided his official guest house on Friday at about 8:00 a.m.

He said the Police, however, did not find anything incriminating during the raid at the premises located at No. 10 Ganges Street, Maitama, Abuja.

”They met the steward, Oliver Ogenyi, and some of Ekweramdu’s staff and their children in the house.

”In spite of the fact that they were informed that the property is the guest house of the Deputy President of the Senate, they nevertheless proceeded to thoroughly search the house without establishing any contact with the Deputy President of the Senate or any of his senior staff.

”The steward was taken away by the Police to the Special Anti-Robbery (SARS) Office, Garki, Abuja, where the IGP Special Squad’s office is also located.

”Ogenyi was later released after making a statement.

“The Deputy President of the Senate is a law-abiding citizen and does not dispute the fact that the security agencies are empowered by law to carry out searches on premises in accordance with the law.

”However, the law requires that the owner of the property or his representative must be informed and should be present during the search, ” the spokesman noted.

Ekweremadu, according to the statement, is worried about the manner in which his guest house was raided.

“The questions are: Was there a search warrant? What were they looking for? Who searched the police officers before the search? Who supervised the search?

The statement recalled efforts in the past to incriminate the deputy president of the senate.

Meanwhile, the Force Pub.ic Relations Officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood, told the News Agency Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) that the raid was not carried out by the Nigeria Police Force.

  • May Day: You can’t win anti-corruption war with N18,000 minimum wage, Ekweremadu tells Buhari

May Day: You can’t win anti-corruption war with N18,000 minimum wage, Ekweremadu tells Buhari

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has said the anti-corruption war embarked upon by the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration would only have a meaningful impact if the minimum wage is reviewed from N18,000 to N50,000.

Ekweremadu stated this in his goodwill message to workers on May Day.

He said the current N18,000 minimum wage was no longer realistic, given the hyperinflation in the country, which he said had made it difficult for overwhelming majority of Nigerian workers to afford the basic needs of life.

He said: “I felicitate with our workers who toil day and night to move the nation forward. But we must collectively show the workers that we care beyond lip service. Importantly, it is high time we raised the minimum wage from N18,000 to N50,000. It does not make sense to preach anti-corruption alone without giving people the opportunity to earn honest and meaningful living.

“The truth is that, the take-home pay can no longer take the workers home. Where it does, it cannot keep their homes happy, because they can hardly afford a bag of rice, let alone pay school fees, and foot other basic bills”, Ekweremadu said.

He added that, the nation could afford N50,000 minimum wage through proper management of the economy and prudent expenditure by government at all levels.

  • Biafra: Fayose, Ekweremadu to steer fund raising committee for Kanu

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwemeradu, are set to raise support fund for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu to perfect his bail conditions and also cater for his immediate family.

The governor had on Tuesday stormed an Abuja Federal High Court where he showed solidarity with Kanu.

Speaking on the development on Wednesday, the governor said “I’m trying to work with other well meaning Nigerians to raise funds for Kanu so that he can fund his lawyers and meet his immediate family needs.

We are going to ensure that the injustice meted out to him does not destroy him. He has parents, wife and children to take care of. I appeal to Nigerians to support this just cause.”

Fayose, who is the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, called on lawyers to join the struggle for liberation.

As many lawyers that are willing to fight the oppression should join the struggle for liberation from the oppression.

Those willing can send their correspondence to Governors Office or reach me on my telephone line 070300000393 or myemail:mystory2006@yahoo.com.”

Fayose confirmed that Ekwemeradu will be part of the coordinators that will steer the fund raising committee.

The account will be raised in Kanu’s name and will belong to him.

We are just driving the cause. As soon as we receive his account details we will make it available. The money will be used for him and others in incarceration with him.

We believe in coexistence of Nigeria. People have the right to agitate for independence. Even in traditional institution people agitate for autonomy.

When people agitate and they cannot get it, they drop the idea. It is not for you to silence them. That is oppression. Agitation is legitimate”, he said.

Similarly, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, urged Nigerians to use the occasion of the Easter celebration to rededicate themselves to the virtues of justice, forgiveness, and reconciliation, which he said were the essences of the ministry of Jesus Christ on earth.

Ekweremadu said no nation would make progress unless the people were willing to forgive the past, reconcile their differences, and enthrone justice for all, irrespective of their religious, ethnic, and political backgrounds.

The immediate past President of the Senate , Senator David Mark, also asked Nigerians across the religious or socio-political divide to close ranks and work harmoniously in order to overcome the challenges facing the country.

  • Buhari’s govt made Naira Africa’s worst currency – Ekweremadu

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration of making the Naira Africa”s worst.

Ekweremadu said the economy had suffered more crisis under the new government than any government.

Ekweremadu stated this at the Peoples Democratic Party’s national stakeholders’ meeting held at the Ekiti State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, yesterday.

He was quoted by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Uche Anichukwu, as saying, “They told us that one US dollar would be one naira when they take over. Has that happened?

“Today, our currency is the worst currency in the whole of Africa. Is that the type of democracy we looked forward to? I can see a situation where the price of oil is going up and the value of naira is going down. What type of economics is that?”

Ekweremadu, called on members of the PDP faithful to remain strong as the party would “work with Nigerians to restore true democracy and hope to our people.”

He said, “I believe that with determination and sticking together, we will triumph and Nigeria will be better for it.”

He also said the solidarity of all key organs of the PDP for the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee, despite the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal on the party’s leadership tussle, showed that “it is not the hood that makes the monk.

“Such flagrant manipulation of critical institutions of democracy is not only dangerous, but bad news for the nation’s democracy.‎”

  • No Cause for alarm over A/Court on PDP – Ekweremadu

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has enjoined PDP members not to be anxious over ruling of Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt, on lingering party leadership tussle.

This is contained in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr Uche Anichukwu, on Friday in Abuja.

He said there was no cause for alarm, as the party leadership would meet soon to take a decision on the best way forward.

“I enjoin party faithful to remain steadfast as we will surely emerge stronger from the present challenges.

“Those dreaming about the death of the opposition in Nigeria will have to sleep much longer and still wake up to meet us much stronger.

“This is because a vibrant opposition is the beauty of democracy,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt on Friday upheld former Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, as the authentic National Chairman of the PDP.

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt in 2016 declared Makarfi as the chairman of the party, while another court of coordinate jurisdiction in Abuja, headed by Justice Okon Abang, ruled in favour of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff.

Following the leadership tussle, Makarfi and Sheriff have been working from offices other than the national headquarters of the party at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, due to its closure by security agencies.
