Kaduna govt speaks on kidnap of six students, teacher

The Kaduna State Government has confirmed the abduction of six students and one teacher of The Engravers College, Kakau Daji, Chikun Local Government Area of the State.

The NewsGuru had earlier reported the kidnap with an official of the school saying six students and two teachers were abducted.

In a statement made available to the journalist, Samuel Aruwan, the state’s Commissioner, Internal Security and Home Affairs, said the Kaduna government “condemns this as a despicable action, a most unfortunate intrusion of crime into the life of young students and the staff teaching them.”

“Governor Nasir El-Rufai has despatched a government delegation to sympathise with the school community and assure them that security agencies are working to rescue the abducted persons,” he said.

Mr Aruwan said he led the state government’s delegation that included officials of other security agencies.

The school’s bursar, Elvis Allah-Yaro, had earlier told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr Aruwan led a state government team to visit the school after the Thursday kidnap.

In the statement, Mr Aruwan said he “spoke to parents and staff of the school and assured them that every effort will be exerted to free the abductees and punish this brazen crime.”

“The school management and the parents of the students will be given updates as appropriate,” he said.

    By Emmanuel Ado

    “War without End.”

    Unknown

Sun Tuz, without doubt was an acknowledged brilliant military strategist. But to the bewilderment of historians, Tuz was constantly more preoccupied with finding ways to avert war, that he was comfortably tagged a pacifist. Tuz , in fact is credited with securing countless victories without having to wage a war. In “The Art of War “, Tuz admonished warmongers to “appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak”, a further confirmation of his cherished strategy that the “wise warrior avoids the battle”, unless it becomes absolutely unavoidable. Bola Ahmed Tinubu a presidential hopeful on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, would do well to arm himself with the seminal works of Tuz, if he is to rescue what is left of his presidential ambition, which seems already in tatters, because of the “Area Boy” strategy he has seemingly adopted.

There is absolutely no doubt that ownership of mass media is a powerful weapon to have at your beck and call in the contest for political power. The purpose of setting up any business is usually to make money, unlike mass media which most times are principally established for the tremendous power and influence it gives the owner to set National “agenda” and to manipulate – what the people watch and how they watch it, what they hear and how they hear it, what they read and how they read it and what they say and how they say it. Unfortunately only a very limited number of the people can filter what newspapers like The Nation or television/radio stations like the TVC constantly pushes out for their daily consumption, nor make that very important connection that they are working for Tinubu’s interest.

There is absolutely no dispute about the immense power of the media. It was the very hostile print media, that compelled the then ruling National Party of Nigeria (NPN) to set up the Kaduna based Democrat newspapers, to counter the Lagos/Ibadan media axis, which gave the late Alhaji Shehu Shagari’s government a bloody nose. The late Chief M.K.O. Abiola who initially provided the NPN with some media cover, compounded the woes of the NPN by withdrawing support for the Shagari administration, following disagreements between him and the henchmen of the then ruling party. But while the going was good, The National Concorde newspapers saw absolutely nothing wrong with the Shehu Shagari administration, while it demonized the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the one time leader of the region. Eventually the NPN was to enjoy some “objectivity” dose of the Concorde newspapers.

The media empire of Bola Tinubu has consistently waged a concerted media war against Nasir El – Rufai, the Kaduna State Governor, who they perceive as a stumbling block to the presidential ambition of their principal. From Idowu Akinlotan’s “The Waspish El-Rufai”, Festus Eriye’s “El-Rufai the godfather Slayer” , Segun Ayobolu’s “El-Rufai’s thoughts and non – thoughts on godfatherism” to Sam Omatseye’s “A Divider In Chief Of KadunaPolitics – El Rufai double talk” the vexatious news reports and articles are what Akinlotan was frank enough to describe as reactions to “Nasir El Rufai’s inflammatory remarks against the “National Leader” of the All Progressives Congress(APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu”. The Nation columnists and reporters deserve credit for fighting real and imaginary battles of their master, thus disabusing the assumption that the media can be neutral and confirming that serving the interest of the public is most often secondary.

On September 15,2019 Barometer in the article “Between El-Rufai and free speech” continued from where the others had left off , in what clearly is a “war without end” strategy of “containing” and ultimately forcing Nasir El-Rufai to abandon any interest in the presidency. Though El-Rufai has not indicated interest, it would be naive for anyone to conclude that at the appropriate time and all things being equal that he won’t exercise his constitutional right to run or not to run for the presidency. It’s clearly lack of knowledge about El-Rufai , that makes some motor park strategists believe that can he be persuaded by rough tactics to jettison the idea. But assuming without conceding that the motor park strategy works and El-Rufai is forced not to run, it’s safe to conclude that Tinubu won’t be getting the support of Kaduna State which is firmly in El-Rufai’s control. Tinubu, the celebrated “strategist” obviously hasn’t given this some hard thoughts.

What triggered the latest volley of unwarranted attack from Barometer, The Nation newspaper columnist, was El – Rufai’s matter of fact statement at the public presentation of “Digital Wealth” by the blogger Japheth Omojewa, that henceforth the kaduna State Government would diligently prosecute any purveyor of fake news, especially if the tweet, re -tweet or the Facebook fake posts lead to of loss of life or breakdown of law and order. Rather than condemnation, El-Rufai deserves praise for upholding the rule of law,and for not resorting to self help, like some other governors have been known to,and for his manifest faith in the judiciary.

In the warped opinion of Barometer, enforcing the law amounts to destruction of the “foundations of democracy”. For the benefit of Barometer and his likes, El-Rufai it must be restated ran for the governorship of Kaduna State on a strong law and order agenda, based on the Rule of Law- and not might – which explains why he sent packing the “big men” who had shamelessly appropriated school lands and paid compensation in cases where the occupiers had valid allocation from previous governments. He has also implemented the Reports of Commissions of Inquiry into the various communal crisis, as a deterrent to those who would want to take the laws into their hands, believing that as in the past they can get away blue murder.

Late Robert Kennedy eloquently made the point that “every community (country) gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on.” While it might be okay for Lagos State where Barometer resides to condone fake news, Kaduna State based on real time experience of the consequences of fake posts would definitely not tolerate them, the point El-Rufai stridently made and for which he owes Barometer no apology. El-Rufai hasn’t in anyway appropriated the powers of the judiciary by declaring the likes of Chidi Odinkalu who clearly crossed the red line guilty, rather the Kaduna State Government has painstakingly made its case against him and others whose actions on the net has precipitated or escalated communal crisis in the state to the law enforcement agencies whose duty it’s to investigate and prosecute.

Following a series of fake posts by “social media activists” and the traditional media about events in Southern Kaduna, there were very unpalatable reactions, which if the other parts of the state had retaliated , Kaduna State would have most certainly witnessed not one , but several civil strifes, which going by previous incidents would definitely had affected other parts of the country. In the specific case of The Vanguard newspaper reports for which Luka Binniyat and Audu Maikori are standing trial,it was without doubt the mother of fake news. The Vanguard newspaper had reported with certainty the purported killing of some students of the Kaduna State College of Education,Kafanchan by Fulani herdsmen. Audu Maikori, a popular music promoter further amplified the false report, that led to increased tension. The college in refuting the report, asserted that the “report was fabricated by the reporter to compound the security situation in the state.”

It beats my imagination why Barometer would have any problem with the El-Rufai’s assertion that there is no absolute freedom. For the avoidance of doubt I reproduce the governors’ statement ; “we should not confuse freedom of expression with freedom to kill. If you tweet something that is fake or you tweet something that is reckless without checking and it leads to the death of people, then you deserve to be tried at least as an accessory before or after the fact of murder. In Kaduna State we have done that very aggressively because there are things that have been put on social media that have led to the death of people. So, we take it very seriously. You cannot sit in Port Harcourt or Lagos and start posting stuff that leads to societal instability in Kaduna and we let you go. We will file charges, we will go and collect you from Port Harcourt or Lagos and bring you before a judge in Kaduna and the judge will decide whether you are guilty.”

The unfortunate side of the Vanguard newspaper report was not only that it was false in its entirety ,but it profiled a particular ethno-religious group as the assumed aggressor. Like Barometer many activists bluntly refused to condemn the Vanguard newspaper or reprimand Binniyat for his tales by moonlight report that was in every material fact a blatant falsehood (the College was not in session, it doesn’t offer any Programme in Mass Communication and it lost no student),but they typically rose up in arms to threaten and condemn the Kaduna State Government for prosecuting people who clearly jeopardized public security. To worsen matters, Binniyat’s backers praised him to the high heavens for his “highly principled” stand and for refusing to apologize to “the powers that be”. An indication that they welcomed the false story which certainly heightened tension in the entire Southern Kaduna area that was already on edge.

Barometer like many other uninformed commentators without facts made very far reaching conclusions on Suleiman Hunkuyi and Shehu Sani. Had Barometer bothered or cared, he would have confirmed that El – Rufai lost several cases at the State High Court and like the democrat that he is, he appealed them. About Hunkuyi and Sani it’s a shame that in order to achieve some political objectives Barometer would turn facts upside down , maybe because Hunkuyi and Sani at the behest of their Lagos based political master displayed an amazing lack of respect for the party that made them and for the leaders of the party including the president,to the applause of the likes of Barometer. Seeing the handwriting on the wall they both decamped and were roundly trounced in the 2019 general elections. Pity that these are they men Tinubu is building his project on.

Hunkuyi, but most especially Sani, are featherweights ,more popular on Facebook than in their constituencies and at the appropriate time were permanently retired from politics. I challenge Barometer to make public details of the court actions both men filed against the government and how interfered in the matter? About Hunkuyi’s property that was demolished, the kaduna State Geographical Information Service duly served him a demand notice to pay up the backlog of ground rents, which he didn’t. The Government acting in accordance with the law, revoked the title and decided to put the place to the use of the general public. Barometer would certainly never ask, why on earth law makers should be law breakers?

There is no doubt that since 2015 Tinubu preferred candidates ( Shehu Sani, Isa Ashiru ,Hunkuyi), that would have gladly resumed work from Bourdlion, which an independent minded El-Rufai would never agree to. Unknown to many people is the fact that El-Rufai has twice defeated these Tinubu’s boys and would any day hand them another crushing defeat. The good people of kaduna State have spoken and the Governorship Elections Tribunal has further reaffirmed the resounding victory to the consternation of Barometer and his masters. So when Barometer writes that

“despite the ruling of the governorship election petition tribunal, there is still no incontrovertible evidence that Mallam el-Rufai won the last Kaduna governorship poll. He is not liked, he is irascible” , Nigerians should ignore his rantings as that of a frustrated Tinubu apologist.

Rather shamelessly after the rigmarole, Barometer having acknowledged that “fake news is a big problem and that tweeters do sometimes exceed themselves by deliberately concocting falsehood”, rather than calling out the media, or urging the media to take a hard look at itself, in the last paragraph he finally showed his hands and left no one in any doubt that his proxy war against El-Rufai is basically about the 2023 presidential election. And I quote” And to think he has interest in the presidency!”. Precisely the problem that Barometer and his fellow travelers must learn to live with!

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has blamed mischief-makers for the posters about some members contesting for 2023 presidency.

The National Publicity Secretary of APC, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who said this at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, said that the party is not concerned about the race for 2023 elections now.

The focus of the party, he said, is governance.

The posters of APC National leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Gov. Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State and the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had been seen in some parts of the country.

Issa-Onilu, who said that the governing party was faced with challenges of governance, security, economy and corruption, said that it would focus on policies, projects and programmes that were imperative to Nigerians.

“As a party, we want to state clearly that having won elections convincingly and having been given the mandate to run government for the next four years, our major and only focus now is governance.

“We are not engaging in any other activity about 2023 elections.

“Wherever you see such (posters) you can be sure it is from mischief makers to continue to take actions to cause distractions for the governing party.

“We are to deal with the challenges of governance, security, economy and corruption as well as other associated issues. That is what we are focused on.

“So, as a party, we understand that the social contract we have signed with the people of Nigeria with the renewal of our mandate,” the party’s

Issa-Onilu also urged the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) not to undermine the order and security, particularly the judiciary as an important institution of the country.

  • El-Rufai gearing up for 2023 elections with son’s enrollment in public school – Shehu Sani

El-Rufai gearing up for 2023 elections with son’s enrollment in public school – Shehu Sani

Senator who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the eight National Assembly, Shehu Sani has reacted to the action of the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who recently took his six-year-old son Abubakar to a public school for his primary education.

Sani said the governor’s intention was to deceive people outside the locality who may not know the level of decay in public schools in the State saying, it was designed to score political goals ahead of 2023 political dispensation.

He, however, described the move as a badly written Kennywood or Nollywood script, designed for the media preparatory for 2023.

Addressing newsmen in Kaduna, he said, the governor’s action, “was simply a 2023 political stunt set up for the media and people who reside outside Kaduna because those who reside here know what public primary school look like in the state.

According to him, “It is not because I have a political difference with him, no, but whoever lives in Kaduna State knew that what the governor did with his son been enrolled into public school was just a comedy.

“Though, it was a badly written Kennywood or Nollywood script, but as far as am concerned that was a bad and poorly written script for the media preparatory for 2023 and nothing else.

“He would have done better by upgrading schools in Kaduna. You cannot spend N195M in a particular school and then take your son and the media to that school and think you have done anything different.

“Let me tell you, we had a governor in this state, Balarabe Musa who has never lived in the government house during his reign and all the while he was a governor he lived in his private house and I also know that the children of former governor Ahmed Makarfi attended this same Capital School.

“I also know that other public officials’ children go to that school too. So if you are not been cony, deceptive and comical, you would have allowed all your children to enrol into public schools. Public school doesn’t mean primary schools alone, there are public secondary schools and public universities.

“He is not new in this kind of drama. It was the same person who was moving around Kaduna-Abuja road with cameras that he was chasing kidnappers. So, this is a new script but as far as am concerned, that is comedy sinnce we are in an era in this state of using public utilities, public hospitals and now public schools.

“So it is also in order that public officials, both elected and appointed should also patronise public toilets in Kaduna. That is the highest form of patriotism and selfless service. You should use what the masses are using which is public toilets.” He said.

Photos: El-Rufai enrols son in Kaduna public primary school

Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Monday enrolled his six-year-old child, Abubakar Al-Siddique El-Rufai into primary one in Capital School Malali, Kaduna, a public school, in fulfilment of a promise he made in 2017.

El-Rufai in a state broadcast in December 2017, promised to enrol his child in a public school when he turns six years.

“The move is part of reforms to revamp public schools in the state to make them more competitive. We are determined to fix public education and raise their standards so that private education will become only a luxury.

“As we make progress, we will require our senior officials to enrol their children in public schools. And I will by personal example ensure that my son that will be six years of age in 2019 will be enrolled in a public school in Kaduna State, by God’s grace,” El-Rufa’i had said.

Briefing newsmen shortly after he enrolled the child, El-Rufa’i explained that it was a commitment that had been fulfilled.

“I made that commitment because I believe that it is only when all political leaders have their children in public schools that we will pay due attention to the quality of public education. I went to a public school like this. The school I went to is not as good as this one, but here I am, because of the quality teaching I got.

“I intend to ensure that all our public schools offer quality education, and so we are encouraging all our senior public servants to send their children to public schools. Once the public schools are improved to a point they are nearly as good or even better than private schools, no one will waste his money taking his child to private school,” he said.

Ummi El-Rufa’i, the mother of the child said: “l am glad that we can send a strong message to our leaders and the elites, that we need to start making things work from within our homes. By the time we start attending public hospitals and send our children to public schools, the system will get better. This is a very huge step,” she said.

On his part, the little child said: “I am sad that I will miss my old school, my friends and my teachers. But I have to help my father keep his promise”.

  • Fake news peddlers in Lagos will not go unpunished -El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has said fake news peddlers living outside Kaduna State will not be spared if they spread false news about his state.

El-Rufai made this known at the launch of a book titled, ‘Digital Wealth”, by blogger, Japheth Omojuwa, in Abuja on Tuesday.

El-Rufai said persons who tweet fake news and those who re-tweet risk being detained if the effect of the fake news leads to loss of life or pandemonium.

He averred that social media could be used for good and also for evil and thus it would be wrong to look at only the negative sides.

El-Rufai added, “We should not confuse freedom of expression with freedom to kill. If you tweet something that is fake or you tweet something that is reckless without checking and it leads to the death of people, then you deserve to be tried at least as an accessory before or after the fact of murder.

“In Kaduna State we have done that very aggressively because there are things that have been put on social media that have led to the death of people. So, we take it very seriously. You cannot sit in Port Harcourt or Lagos and start posting stuff that leads to societal instability in Kaduna and we let you go.

“We will file charges, we will go and collect you (sic) from Port Harcourt or Lagos and bring you before a judge in Kaduna and the judge will decide whether you are guilty. We’ve done that two or three times. The people we have done this to are still being prosecuted.”

During the build-up to the 2019 election, the governor threatened that any foreigner that interfered in Nigeria’s elections would leave in a body bag therefore sparking reports that he was among those placed on a visa ban by the United States.

In 2017, Audu Maikori, the former chief executive of record label, Chocolate City, was arrested by the police on charges of incitement based on a petition by the Kaduna State Government attributed to his tweet on killings in a town in southern Kaduna.

Maikori later withdrew and apologised saying the information was false.

  • El-Rufai hails Tribunal judgement upholding his re-election as Kaduna governor

Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai on Monday hailed the affirmation of his re-election by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

A statement by the Special Adviser, Media & Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, quoted the governor as thanking the tribunal for its verdict and expressing his gratitude to the people whose electoral choice has been reaffirmed.

The tribunal on Monday upheld the election of El-Rufai as the duly elected governor.

The Chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Ibrahim Bako, said the petitioner, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Isah Ashiru, was unable to prove his allegations of massive rigging and other electoral irregularities against Governor El-Rufai, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the petition filed before the tribunal, the PDP candidate had alleged that irregularities marred the conduct of the March 9, 2018 governorship election and asked the tribunal to declare him winner.

The Vice Chancellor, Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Mohammed Bello, who was the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer, had said El-Rufai polled 1,045,427 to defeat his closest rival, Isa Ashiru, the PDP candidate, who scored 814,168.

The PDP and its governorship candidate, Ashiru, had petitioned the tribunal asking it to nullify El-Rufai’s election.

The petitioners, in their final written address, asked the tribunal to cancel 515, 951 votes, which they contended, were unlawfully added to the total votes cast during the poll.

The petitioners called 135 witnesses out of the 685 they assembled to prove alleged massive rigging, ballot stuffing and other irregularities during the poll as contained in their petition.

The petitioners accused the INEC of adding 391,741 votes to El-Rufai’s and 124, 210 unlawful votes to the PDP through wrong or double entry on the result sheets.

They said that declaring El-Rufai as the winner by INEC was illegal, as he did not poll the majority of lawful votes.

The PDP through its legal team led by Mr. Emmanuel C. Ukala (SAN), said deducting 391,741 votes from 1,045,427 scored by El-Rufai and 124,210 from Ashiru’s 814, 168 votes would give victory to PDP and Ashiru, its candidate.

The PDP Chairman in Kaduna State, Hassan Hyet, has said his party will appeal the tribunal’s judgment.

BREAKING: Tribunal upholds El-Rufai’s election as Kaduna governor

The Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Kaduna has upheld the victory of Governor Nasir El-Rufai of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the valid winner of the March 9, 2019.

The tribunal chaired by Justice Ibrahim Bako dismissed the petition of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) candidate Isa Ashiru’s challenging El-Rufai’s victory.

Reading the judgement, Justice Bako said Ashiru, who is the petitioner failed to provide substantial evidences to prove his case.

    Details shortly….

  • Kaduna guber: Tribunal decides El-Rufai, Ashiru’s fates Monday

The Kaduna State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will on Monday, Sept 9, rule on the petition challenging the re-election of Gov. Nasiru El-Rufai of Kaduna state.

The Tribunal Secretary, Mrs Hafsat Suleiman, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Kaduna.

Suleiman said the Tribunal concluded its sitting on Aug. 19 and has fixed Monday, Sept. 9, to pass its verdict on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP and its governorship candidate in the March 9 poll, Alhaji Isah Ashiru, had petitioned the Tribunal asking it to nullify El-Rufai’s election.

The petitioners in their final written address, asked the Tribunal to cancel a total of 515, 951 votes which it contended were unlawfully added to the total votes cast during the March 9 poll.

The petitioners had called 135 witnesses out of the 685 they assembled to prove alleged massive rigging, ballot stuffing and other irregularities during the poll as contained in their petition.

The petitioners had accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of adding 391,741 votes to El-Rufai of APC and 124, 210 unlawful votes to the PDP, through wrong or double entry on the result sheets.

They also contended that declaring El-Rufai winner by INEC was illegal as he did not score majority of lawful votes.

The PDP through its legal team led by Mr. Emmanuel C. Ukala (SAN), said deducting 391,741 votes from 1,045,427 scored by El-Rufai and 124,210 from Ashiru’s 814, 168 votes will give victory to PDP and Ashiru, its candidate in the poll.

The counsel had argued that after the deduction of the alleged unlawful votes, Ashiru will be left with 689,958 lawful votes, while El-Rufai will have 653,686 votes.

Ukala argued that all parties to the petition are bound to argue their cases on the basis of whether or not the petitioners had assembled credible evidence to sustain their petition, as formulated by the Tribunal.

According to him, “only the 2nd respondent premised his argument on the issues formulated by this honorable tribunal.

“The 1st and 3rd respondents went on their own forays.

“It is, therefore, our submission that the argument of the 1st and 3rd respondents should go to ‘no issue’, having not addressed the issue which was binding to all parties, “ Ukala argued.

The petitioners counsel further said that based on the issues formulated by the tribunal, the issue has been narrowed down to the credibility of evidence.

“Based on this simplification of the issue, it is our humble submission that when the evidence led by both sides are placed on the imaginary scales of justice, what is obvious is that the weight of evidence of the petitioners will overwhelmingly weigh in favour of the petitioners as against the respondents, “ he said.

“First, the petitioners called 135 witnesses. All respondents put together, 1st, 2nd and 3rd respondents, called a total of five witnesses.

“What is obvious is that there were so many areas covered by the petitioners that were not addressed by the respondents.”

Ukala further pointed out that the quality of the petitioners’ evidence was more qualitative than that of the respondents, with polling unit agents who actually saw what happened on the election day testifying.

However, in its final written address and reply to points raised by the petitioners, Counsel to APC, Ibrahim Bawa (SAN) said: “our final written address before the tribunal is that the petitioners have not been able to establish their claim before the court.

“There are certain allegations that were made which were criminal.

“The petitioners also complain that certain votes were illegally recorded for the 2nd and 3rd respondents, but unfortunately no evidences were made to prove those points.

“So, we urge the Tribunal to dismiss the petition as the petitioners have failed to live up to the standard expected of them in proving their petition.”

Similarly, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, counsel to El-Rufai, the 2nd respondent in the petition, asked the tribunal “to invoke its majestic powers to dismiss the petition as lacking in merit.

“And to confirm that the 2nd respondent, Malam Nasiru El Rufai as duly elected as governor of Kaduna State in the March 9 election. “

Mustapha further said: “we have been able to tell the court that all the witnesses called by the petitioners failed woefully to prove the ingredient of the fact relied upon in their petition.

“The onus is on the petitioners to come with credible evidence and all the testimonies of the witnesses produced by the petitioners were demolished under cross examination.

“There is nothing that the court will see to be persuaded to give judgment in their favor, we have been able to show with the witnesses we called that the election was conducted in conformity with the provision of the electoral Act.

“We are very satisfied with the proceedings and we are very sure that justice will be done and sure that Malam Nasiru El-Rufai was duly elected by the people of Kaduna State.

“On behalf of the 2nd respondent, the final written address which was dated 2nd August, was filed on 3rd August, 2019, while the 2nd respondent filed a reply on fact of law on August 16,” Mustapha said.

On his part, Counsel to INEC, Aliyu Umar (SAN), urged the tribunal to “dismiss the petition and confirm El Rufai as duly elected Governor of Kaduna State.“

Umar drew the attention of the tribunal to the fact that the petitioners had just served him with a list of additional authorities on the day of sitting.

“And their witnesses have all confirmed during cross examination that no INEC officials connived with any other person.

“The petitioners only called 135 of the 685 witnesses the petitioners said they would call, that is short of the number they were supposed to call to prove their case.

“They are to win their case by the evidence presented not by our witnesses,” Umar said.

The Tribunal is chaired by Justice Ibrahim Bako, with Khadi Adamu Usman and Justice Jude Obiora as members.

Kaduna guber: El-Rufai closes case at tribunal

Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna state, who is the second respondent on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Isa Ashiru at the election tribunal has closed his case on Wednesday, after calling two witnesses.
The second witness who gave evidence on Wednesday was Forensic and a Hand Writing expert, retired DSP Olufemi Ayodele.
Mr. Ayodele who adopted his written statement as evidence before the tribunal explained that only a few witnesses signed the documents of the petitioner, based on his findings.
“After analyses of the signatures on the statement of oath, it was found out that only three persons were responsible for the signing of about 624 signatures of the petitioner. One of them was solely responsible for signing 471, another person signed 144, the third person signed nine signatures,” the witness said.
Under cross-examination, Ayodele said that he is not a consultant but a professional.
However, the petitioner’s counsel, Mr. E. Y Kurah (SAN), referred him to paragraph five of his petition where the witness referred to himself as a principal consultant.
Ayodele clarified that he had referred to himself as a consultant in the document as a way of introduction but as a witness in court, he is a professional.
The petitioner’s counsel asked him whether he was paid to do the job of a Forensic Analyst and the witness answered in the affirmative but refused to disclose his professional fee.
Mr. Ayodele also said that he has no allegiance to the person who hired him, adding that his testimony was to assist the tribunal as best as he can.
