” If you want to make enemies, try to change something.”
Woodrow Wilson
Man inadvertently makes enemies either at work place or in his social relationships and there are legion of reasons – from the mundane to the serious- why people dislike people. The other interesting dimension about the hate business is that whether people love you or love to hate you is certainly out of your hands, it’s definitely beyond the control of any man. Even genuine efforts at correcting perceptions have in several instances tragically failed because of deep seated hatred or for some inexplicable grudges. The only option is developing a thick skin and learning to live with those who intensely dislike or hate you , because there is no known script on how to avoid making enemies.
Nasir El-Rufai , the governor of Kaduna State has powerful political enemies most of whom by the way he made in the line of duty, as Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises(BPE), and as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory where to the acclaim of many he restored the master plan of Abuja and introduced many landmark policies like the Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS). How can El- Rufai demolish the houses of the high and mighty and that of the poor without making enemies for life or courting their anger? Though Nasir El-Rufai has been portrayed as one who has sinned more , than he has been sinned against, the fact is contrary. But the narrative is understandable considering that his known political enemies includes the likes of Atiku Abubakar, the Vice President under whom he worked in the BPE , Bukola Saraki the President of the Senate and the likes of Senators Shehu Sani and Suleiman Hunkuyi who were essentially deployed to harass El-Rufai.
Like Woodrow Wilson said ” If you want to make enemies, try to change something.” Wilson must have had the reformists like El -Rufai in mind because rocking the boat, shaking up things in a determined bid to make them better is the essential Nasir El – Rufai,Mallam to his legion of fanatical supporters. In his desire to reposition Kaduna State , El – Rufai has obviously imbibed the eternal words of Abraham Lincoln that “You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.” Which is not to say that he doesn’t worry about the perception of people about him,but what can he do when he is constantly misunderstood?
Nasir El-Rufai a die hard reformist has since he became governor shaken up every sector- from the Public Service to the Agricultural Sector, which kaduna State surly and obviously needed, but entrenched forces including civil servants have vigorously resisted. Kaduna State, the Center of Learning lagged behind states like Jigawa and Katsina in about every area, most especially in education, infrastructure and the public service which use to be the envy of other states. In one word kaduna State was creaky and had stagnated.
El-Rufai like every man wants to be liked, but obviously for doing what is right and not for condoning wrong. His zero tolerance for the “routine” , it can be argued comes from his questioning nature ,that rebels, that challenges status quo, from a DNA that didn’t come with a “play safe” mode. Nasir El Rufai is not courageous, but conviction personified which explains why has taken not one difficult decision ,but several difficult decisions in his first term, which other politicians have usually pushed to their second term. Take for instance, the dysfunctional public service that was largely unproductive, an aging workforce that lacked capacity to deliver, but very focused on taking care of itself – recurrent budget is always implemented as opposed to capital expenditure. For El – Rufai this clearly was repulsive, because government is for the common good of all and not a tinny minority, that in actual fact already “over” benefit from the resources accruing to the state in terms of wages etc. Thankfully the budget figures released by the Economic Planning shows an expenditure that’s in favour of capital expenditure, which explains the steady growth the state has continued to witness.
There was never any doubt about El – Rufai’s capacity to “shake up” a stagnant Kaduna State, which had predictably fallen into a state of decay, with the likes of Namadi Sambo and his protege Ramallan Yero ,who lacked vision and any conviction as governors. Sambo and Yero are “twin towers” of governance defined more by looks – starched babanriga and designer sunshades- than by substance.Their times as governors remain dark chapters in the history of Kaduna State.Sambo whose motto from day one was”promises kept”,kept none of his unwieldy 11 point agenda. His legacy remains the 20 billion naira office complex, that is in every respect in terms of functionality an architectural nightmare , which compared to the brand new Government House Complex built by Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State for less than 10 billion naira is a rip off.
The real area where El -Rufai has obviously stepped on toes is in the political arena. For the political merchants who were used to all manner of appointments Nasir El-Rufai is bad news. Even though the opposition have made efforts to masquerade behind the various reforms, like the urban renewal programmes, the civil service revitalization programme and the sales of the badly dilapidated government quarters to fight him , the truth remains that groups like the Kaduna Restoration Group, made up of enlightened people , many of whom in fact hold citizenship of countries like United States, are fiercely opposed to El- Rufai, for appointing non – indigenes into executive positions. When it suites groups like these they question the indigene and non indigene policy, but when it shuts them out they cry foul. The big question is how can a Nigerian be shut out from contributing his/her quota to a state where by birth he/she should comfortably lay claim to? The political brouhaha of some Kaduna State “stakeholders” has to do with the governors demonstrated faith in Nigeria and trust in people from other parts of the country.
The kaduna State Citizenship Programme of Governor Nasir El -Rufai by action and by words demonstrates this patriotism. In practical terms the policy seeks to acknowledge everyone born or resident in Kaduna State as a citizen, with same rights as an indigene. Clearly the governor and groups like the Restoration group are miles apart,in terms of their World views. In a warfare, all is said to be fair, but there is and there must be a limit to politics. It is deeply worrying that the opposition to the so called “non-indigenes” is based on their tribe, and this definitely has dangerous implications for our dear country.
America has remained great, unlike other once great countries like “Great Britain” that collapsed , because it has continued to renew itself by attracting the very best from all over the world. Arnold Schwarzenegger,an Austrian- American only migrated to America at the age of 21, and that didn’t stop him from becoming a two term Governor of California state, the fourth largest economy of the world. Arnold Schwarzenegger in fact is the second foreign born governor of California. Back home in Nigeria,Adams Oshiomhole, the former governor of Edo State literally hijacked the late Olaitan Oyerinde from the Nigerian Labour Congress to be his Principal Private Secretary, because like El -Rufai he was looking for loyalty, trust, capacity and competency. So the three (3) Ibos in his cabinet are first and fit most Nigerians who happen to be Ibos.
The problem of El – Rufai with the opposition was no doubt been worsened by the very “lean” government of the All Progressive Congress(APC), at the State and federal levels. So in the Sahara desert of appointments, the political elite believes that the “foreign” appointees “short changed” Kaduna State indigenes, hence the loud noise. Nigerian elites are appointment driven,so Kaduna State or Nigeria is only okay depending on whether they are patronized or not.Thats not to say that they are not entitled to rewards for their efforts in getting El- Rufai, the snag is that the money is not just there anymore to support the retinue of Special Assistants, who in the true sense are only important as Party delegates.
In the United States of America, people back candidates who will initiate policies – lower taxes, or embark on healthcare reforms or other programmes that will further free enterprise, in Nigeria everyone wants lucrative appointments and not incentives for manufacturing, because they have never manufactured and have no plans of ever manufacturing anything in their life. Not many people remember the famous K.O is not OK headline of the Daily Times newspaper. K. O. Mbadiwe, the flamboyant politician from present Imo State had been left out in the cold by President Shehu Shagari,in spite of his “timber and caterpillar ” contributions to the success of the National Party of Nigeria at the polls. K. O only became OK, when he was eventually settled with an ambassadorial position.
All public policies have costs and benefits, winners and losers. But the fact remains that overall good should guide public action. His actions in the FCT and in Kaduna State definitely hurt some few people who by the way broke the law. The benefits he left in Abuja was an organised, orderly city, with high quality of social services. And in his first term in Kaduna State, Nasir El- Rufai has definitely given a credible account of himself – from the swift implementation of governance reforms, like the Treasury Single Account, zero-based budgeting, taxation, investments, a digital land registry and public procurement, government anchored on pro-people development to his policy of national unity. He has shown the way to national unity and cohesion. Like Anwar Sadat the late Egyptian president said” There can be hope only for a society, which acts as one big family, not as many”.

2019: El-Rufai clears air on death threats to foreign election observers
Following massive reactions that greeted his statement, Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has clarified his comments, saying the reactions that followed his comments were false outrage, which he said must stop.
In a statement he issued through his media aide, Samuel Aruwan, El-Rufai insisted that his comments were not call for violence, but a powerful defense of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The Governor said he merely stood up for Nigeria’s dignity in the wake of those who would traduce their country and reduce it to the status of a colony in their vain quest for power.
According to him, “A notorious trait of the characters that constitute the opposition in Nigeria is the manufacture of outrage on flimsy grounds. However, contriving anger on false premises and summoning a din of feverish commentary will not alter the facts. Election season is regarded as silly season in some quarters, but it is a very serious moment.
“When Malam Nasir El-Rufai appeared on NTA’s Tuesday Night Live, he made comments every patriot can understand. He stood up for Nigeria’s dignity in the wake of those who would traduce their country and reduce it to the status of a colony in their vain quest for power.
“The video of his comments is in circulation. Any fair-minded person with modest familiarity with the English language and unimpaired comprehension can understand it. It does not contain any call for violence. What it is a powerful defense of sovereignty? Are some sections of our political class implying that they will acquiesce in or collaborate with foreign intervention in our country?
“Affirming that a country will defend itself against needless intervention is the kind of statement you expect to hear from a patriot. It is not a call for violence. Warning about the consequences of meddling in another country’s affairs is legitimate.
“Non-interference in the affairs of other countries is a basic principle of international law. Threatening to intervene in another country implies the use of force. Those who are basing their electoral calculations on foreign intervention need to be discouraged. Only the lawful votes of the Nigerian people should make or unmake governments.
“Malam Nasir El-Rufai has issued a powerful call for vigilance and a clear notice that other countries should not mistake the supine posture of the opposition for national weakness.
“Malam Nasir El-Rufai has stood firmly against those who have been trying to divide Nigerians on ethnic and religious lines. He is resolutely opposed to violence, and firmly committed to peace and harmony.
“Let the false outrage stop,” El-Rufai said.

2019: EU replies El-Rufai over death threats to foreign election observers
The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) on Wednesday replied Governor Nasir El-Rufai and said its observers were invited for the February poll by the Federal Government.
It said its observers are always impartial and do not interfere in the electoral process.
It also clarified that its observers will continue their work across the country in the run-up to – and beyond – the 16 February elections.
The EU EOM, which made its position known in a statement in Abuja, said the “security of EU observers is of paramount importance and will remain under constant review.”
The statement said: “We are aware of the comments by the Governor of Kaduna about non-interference by foreigners during a talk show on the elections Tuesday 5 February.
“The EU only deploys an election observation mission when it is invited to do so by the authorities of a country. The EU has been invited to observe all of the general elections in Nigeria since 1999. Thus this is the sixth time the EU is observing elections in Nigeria.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission invited the EU to deploy an observation mission for the 2019 general elections.
“EU election observation missions give commentary and analysis and make recommendations about the electoral process. EU election observation missions are impartial, do not interfere in the electoral process, and operate according to a strict code of conduct.”
Notwithstanding, the EU said its observers will continue to do their work while their security remains under constant review.
While the security of EU observers is of paramount importance, and will remain under constant review, EU observers will continue their work across the country in the run-up to – and beyond – the 16 February elections.
The statement added: “For the last month the mission’s team in Abuja, as well as 40 long-term observers across the country, have followed the elections.
“We have met with a wide range of candidates, parties, election officials, security agencies, and civil society organizations, and have enjoyed good cooperation at federal and state levels.
The mission looks at all aspects of the election, including the campaign tone, the transparency of the election administration, the neutrality of security forces, and the independence of the judiciary.“

CCT Trial: El-Rufai knocks Onnoghen, says even Dangote can’t forget $1m in account
…Insists CJN must go
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Friday dismissed as untenable alleged claim by the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN),Justice Walter Onnoghen that he (Onnoghen) forgot to declare $3million dollars in his accounts.
El-Rufai said in Kaduna that even Alhaji Alio Dangote with all his wealth cannot forget $1million in an account.
The governor spoke while receiving a solidarity letter from members of Coalition of Civil Society Organizations who took to the streets of Kaduna to express support for the action taken by President Muhammadu Buhari against the suspended CJN.
He said: “the case with Justice Onnoghen is a very sad one. Othman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto caliphate wrote that the worst form of corruption you can find in any public service is judicial corruption. This is because when the president is corrupt or the governor is corrupt, it is to the judge that ordinary people can take their case to.
“The president did the right thing by asking him to step aside pending investigation. It is the proper thing to do. It is what is done in every organized and civilized society.
“Unfortunately, some people in Nigeria are trying to make white black and black, white. They are using technicalities to delay bringing this man to justice.
“Mr. President did not remove Onnoghen from office. He said in honour of the judiciary, he should step aside so that the charges against him can be investigated and prosecuted.
“But the man does not want to go.It is time for Nigerians to come all out and tell him he must go. Our judiciary must be clean. Our judiciary must consist of judges who cannot be bought.
“The case of Justice Onnoghen is the case in which somebody who has worked in government for the past 20 years suddenly has millions of dollars in his account, he has admitted but says he has forgotten about it.
“I do not think Dangote will forget $1 Million in his account.”
Leaders of the civil society organisations, Comrade Zubairu Muktar and Arc Abubakar R Abubakar hailed Buhari for taking steps to restore the lost glory of Nigeria’s judiciary .
They pledged the coalition’s continued support for government to “purge out corruption embedded in the Nigerian system which has become a hindrance to the economic, political and social development of our dear nation.”

El-Rufai foresees poor outing in Southern Kaduna, defends choice of Muslim deputy
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has said he is aware that 67 per cent of Christians in Southern Kaduna will not vote for him in the governorship election even if he picks the Pope as his running mate.
He added that there was a need for competence to be given priority over religion and ethnicity, hence his decision to run with a Muslim/Muslim ticket.
El-Rufai, who was a guest on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily programme on Thursday, said Nigeria ought to divorce religion from politics.
The governor, who is a Muslim, had come under harsh criticism from the Christian Association of Nigeria and other interest groups for picking a Muslim as a running mate.
El-Rufai, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, said even his outgoing deputy, Yusuf Bala Bantex, who is a Christian, was treated like an outcast because he was in the APC.
El-Rufai said, “What if I tell you that no matter who I choose as my running mate, even if I choose the Pope, 67 per cent of the Christians in Southern Kaduna have made up their minds that they will never vote for me. This is what the polls show.
“So for me, that is not the issue. The issue is this. Kaduna State is divided; it needs to be united. The way to begin to unite it is to take religion or ethnicity off the table. Since 1992, every deputy governor of Kaduna has been a Christian. What has it done for the state? Has it united the state? Has it assuaged the feelings of the Christian minority that they are part of the government?
“My current deputy governor is a Christian and I didn’t pick him because he is Christian, I picked him because we were colleagues from university and I know him to be a brilliant, focused and just man; but did that change anything? In fact, what it did was to bring disrespect to him. No one respected him in Southern Kaduna because he is in what they call an Islamic party. So, there are complicated issues in Kaduna which people sitting from a distance will not understand.”
The governor said his choice of a female Muslim running mate would help Kaduna State to see beyond politics and religion.
El-Rufai said the federal character principle in Nigeria was stifling development.
He said although his decision to pick a Muslim running mate was an unpopular decision in some quarters, he was confident of winning the election in March.

PDP successful rally in Sokoto and El-rufa’i’s political frightening – Sokoto Govt
The recent claim by Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-rufa’i that PDP hired supporters from Niger Republic during the flag off of the Atiku/Obi Northwest Presidential campaign in Sokoto is nothing but blatant lie, evident of political frightening and an attempt to score cheap political goals.
The outcry by El-rufa’i is a testimony to the fact that APC and its leadership were shocked by the gargantuan crowd the rally recorded in Sokoto which serve as the final burial of APC government in the Northwest and Nigeria in general because of perpetual failure, bad leadership, massive corruption, failure to end terrorism and other security challenges bedeviling our nation since the inception of Buhari’s administration in 2015.
For the purpose of setting the record straight, El-rufa’i should not forget so soon that his hands were deeply involved in messing up of the present administration as a result of his bad governance and policies as a governor of Kaduna state, through mass sacking of innocent primary school teachers, unnecessary demolition of peoples landed properties, disregards and disrespects to traditional rulers, Northern elders, leaders and other respected institutions, escalation of insecurity, refusal to obey the court orders and rule of law among several others.
El-Rufai is coldhearted. It was the same Northwest people that he and his party begged for support in 2015, but because the failure of APC government, incessant hunger and poverty all over the region, that have made them to decamped to PDP, He is now calling them foreigners.
What scared El-rufa’i and his co-travellers was the success recorded at the Sokoto PDP campaign rally. The Sokoto gathering no doubt instilled fair in the minds of El-rufa’i and his cohorts so much that in their wildest imagination their party, the APC will fight it impossible to record a replica of such mammoth crowd in any state of the Northwest including El-rufa’I’s own state of Kaduna. We therefore challenge El-rufa’i and APC to do same if at all they can in any of the state in Northwest.
With Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal at the helm of affairs as Governor of Sokoto state and campaign coordinator of PDP in Northwest, El-rufa’i will receive the shock of his life in Kaduna state and entire Northwest during the fourth coming general election.
Tambuwal as master political strategist who became second during the Presidential primaries of PDP will defeat APC hands down and deliver the entire Northwest to PDP because of massive support, love and loyalty of the people of the Northwest to him.
Governor Tambuwal appreciate the political courage of the entire people of Northwest, their support and loyalty to PDP and sincerely thanks them and appeal to them to come out en masse during the forthcoming general election to lead PDP to victory.

Muslim/Muslim ticket: Buhari helped me in choosing my running mate — El Rufai
Governor Nasir E’rufai of Kaduna has explained how he chose his running mate for the 2019 election.
In his first public response to criticisms over the decision, Mr El Rufai said he benefitted from President Muhammad Buhari’s counsel in deciding the candidate.
Mr El-Rufai last week named Hadiza Balarabe, the current Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, as his deputy governorship candidate.
While some have applauded the choice of a female candidate, critics have accused the governor of insensitivity in picking a fellow Muslim for a religiously delicate state as Kaduna.
But speaking Tuesday when he received a delegation from Sanga LGA who came to thank him for selecting their daughter as his running mate, Mr El Rufai gave an insight how the decision was made.
According to him, Mrs Balarabe defeated 32 other nominees to emerge as his running mate.
“We started piling list of people for consideration, and I had up to 32 names, including names of some people seated with me here today,” he said. “Then, we started selection and dropping of names based on merit. From 32 manes to 17 to 12 and then five names, three males and two females.
“At that point, and as usual of us, when we are taking serious decisions, we consult President Muhammadu Buhari, because he is the only person I know that has worked in the army, he has been governor, minister and president.
“So, when I told him, he said anyone older than you should be dropped, then one name was dropped, remaining two men and two women, then he said, since you are interested in a woman pick the best woman. That was how I picked Hadiza because she was the best.
He responded to criticisms about the “Muslim-Muslim” ticket, the first in years for the north west state.
“Meanwhile, from the beginning, I had told my team that, I will never choose or deny anyone appointment because of religion or ethnicity,” the governor said.“But some people have started all manner of things, ‘Muslim-Muslim ticket’ and so on. But government house is not a place of worship, we come here to work for the people.
“The people that have criticized me most on this are people who never voted me in the first place. So, are they not supposed to be celebrating if in their own opinion I have made a wrong choice? Then, why are they mourning?” Mr El-Rufai asked.

El-Rufai: Why I choose Hadiza Balarabe as my Running Mate
Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has given reasons over the choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate in 2019 gubernatorial election, saying Balarabe was chosen based on her competence and antecedents.
The Governor made the clarification on Tuesday, while playing host to people of Sanga Local Government, where Balarabe hails from, who paid him a ‘thank you’ visit over the choice of their daughter.
While narrating the journey that led to the choice of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, Governor El-Rufai said, “About a year ago, the Deputy Governor, Architect Barnabas Yusuf Bala told me he was going to contest for Senate, I was in dilemma to get a replacement for Architect Bantex.
“So, we started filing list of people for consideration, and I had up to 32 names, including names of some people seated with me here today.
“Then, we started selection and dropping of names based on merit from 32 names to 17 to 12 and then five names, three males and two females.
Explaining how he tried to get in touch with Balarabe, the governor said the next challenge for him was how to get Balarabe’s number and that it was his third wife that gave it to him after he made some calls.
“When I called her she said she was in Kenya, I told her that she will be my running mate in the 2019 elections and I asked her whether she will accept it.
“She did not give an answer immediately but she called me back after some minutes and said she accepted,” the governor explained.
He said after making the choice, many respected persons called to tell him that he made the right choice as Balarabe is hard working and competent.
The governor added:”From the beginning, I had told my team that, I will never choose or deny anyone appointment because of religion or ethnicity”
While speaking on Balarabe’s giant strides in her previous assignment, El-Rufai said his running mate has repositioned the state primary healthcare development agency where she was Executive Secretary.
Earlier, the Sanga people said the appointment of their daughter, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as the running mate to governor El-rufai for the 2019 election has given them hope that they actually belong in the affairs of governance.
Speaking on behalf of the community, the traditional ruler of Numana, Etu Numana, Brig-Gen. Aliyu Yamma (Rtd), said over the years, the successive governments had forgotten the people of the area as far as participation in governance was concerned.
The traditional ruler noted, “The governor couldn’t have made a better choice than the selection of Hadiza. We now feel a sense of belonging in Kaduna government”.
He also appealed to Governor El-rufai to ensure establiahment of Army Battalion in Sabon Gida village because of insecurity in the area.
He said, “The Sabo Gida has become a hideout for criminals, these criminals run from Plateau state to hide here, so we are calling on the governor to help us with the establishment of Army Battalion in Sabo Gida”.

Stop the hate speech- Obi cautions El-Rufai
The Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Peter Obi, on Saturday asked governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State to stop making provocative statements that could incite hate amongst Nigerians.
Obi was reacting to El Rufai’s tweet that Obi is “a tribal bigot.”
El Rufai had tweeted that Obi stopped him from moving around Anambra State during the governorship election in the State in 2010.
But Obi while reacting to the allegation at a youth programme in Nnewi, Anambra State, said he was shocked to read such an outbreak of hate from El Rufai, especially when “the statement came unprovoked.
He said, “This is suggesting that it was what he sat down to think of rather than thinking about how to solve the many problems plaguing the country.
“What His Excellency, Gov. Nasir Ahmad El Rufai said about me has been brought to my attention. I believe that as we grow older and are saddled with more responsibilities, we are expected to become circumspect in our thinking and avoid recklessness in our speeches and utterances.
“How does the circumstance he referred to relate to bigotry to warrant such a label?
“All I do for people like El Rufai is to pray for them and encourage them to concentrate on doing those things that will better the lots of Nigerians rather than engage in hate speeches that will divide and destroy the country.
“At this difficult times in our country, when thousands of our brothers and sisters across ethnic divide are killed all over the country, including innocent citizens in Kaduna state; millions of our children from all the parts of the country are out of school; millions of Nigerian youths from all the parts of the country are without jobs, our pre-occupation, especially among those that are in government should not be making reckless speeches.
“What our leaders should be doing today is seeking solutions to the numerous problems of our dear country.
“I am aware that during the said election he referred to, security agents merely restricted his movement because he had no business being in Anambra as I would not have been in Kaduna on an election day.”
The former governor of Anambra State urged Nigerians, to avoid what he called “the dominance of the vice of hate” over the virtues of love in whatever they do.
