  • If anything happens to El-Zakzaky, we’ll hold FG responsible – lMN

The federal government will be held responsible should anything happen to the lbrahim El-Zakzaky or his wife while in their custody, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has warned.

The group made this known in a statement by its media forum president, Ibrahim Musa.

“Let it be clearly known therefore that, the Federal Government will be held directly responsible should anything happen to the Sheikh or his wife while in their custody.

“This government must be told some doses of the stark truth,” IMN said.

The group noted that, “In the last couple of days, news of a further deterioration of the health situation of our Leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, has filtered through and the government is denying him the necessary urgent medical attention.

“The Sheikh, who was shot severally more than two years ago, losing his left eye in the process, is at a great risk of losing the other eye except something drastic is done.

“He further suffered a mild stroke in January this year, consequent on the stress and psychological trauma he has had to face, associated with his poor physical condition in the illegal detention and the lack of adequate care. He has not fully recovered from that ever since.

“The lackadaisical attitude of the government is simply unacceptable.

“This disturbing situation has not made the government concede to at least obey the court judgement of more than a year ago, which declared him innocent.

  • El-Zakzaky is not dead – DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has on Friday in Abuja said that the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, is not dead, contrary to rumours.

An official of the service who preferred to remain anonymous, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that El-Zakzaky was hale and hearty.

NAN reports that El-zakzakky was arrested in 2015 after his members had a confrontation with the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai in Zaria, Kaduna State.

NAN also reports that 53 of his followers were arrested on Wednesday by the Police in Abuja following a violent protest.

Since the arrest and detention of the group’s leader, his followers had organised series of protests in some cities in the country calling for his release.

  • Don’t sell weapons to Nigeria, El-Zakzaky’s group, Shiites beg Trump

Don’t sell weapons to Nigeria, El-Zakzaky’s group, Shiites beg Trump

Sequel to the continued detainment of its leader despite various court judgement ordering his (Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky) release, a Nigerian Shiite group, Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, has written to the United States government urging it not to sell weapons or any military hardware to the Federal Government.

The letter, which was dated August 17 and signed by the head of the Free Zakzaky Campaign Committee, Abdulrahaman Abubakar, cited “appalling human rights record” of Nigerian military as the reason for the group’s “vehement objection to the proposed sale of weapons and military hardware to the government of Nigeria.”

In the letter, the group stated that “the military’s human rights record in Nigeria is utterly dismal and the Nigerian government’s commitment to the rule of law is even worse off.”

It drew the attention of the U.S. government to “incessant refusal of the government to acknowledge excesses of the military in handling civilian matters, but even tries to justify them.”

IMN alleged the examples of “the blatant murder of 34 unarmed civilians in Zaria in 2014, including the children of Sheikh Zakzaky, without the government doing anything about it.

As if it was not grievous enough, the murderous soldiers returned in December, 2015 with an even more brutal force, resulting in the death of over a thousand innocent citizens. The initial response of the government to this callous disregard for human lives was to say, it was a “military affair.”

The group further alleged that “there is usually no properly conducted inquiries, no prosecutions, no remorse and no public apologies after such acts by the military.”

The Shiites accused the Nigerian government of “shirking in its duties to hold its soldiers to account.”

The Shiite IMN, has however, announced its intention to boycott the public hearings, expressing doubt in the composition of the commission.

The group further cited the case of continued incarceration of its leader, Ibraheem Zakzaky, and his wife “after shooting them at point-blank range, treated them in the most humiliating and denigrating manner before hauling them into incommunicado detention without charges for twenty months.

Even after a Nigerian High Court had ruled that the detention is unconstitutional and ordered their release, the government has continued to contemptuously defy the order.”

The petition therefore called for a complete arms embargo to be placed on the Nigerian military.

It also wanted the embargo to be extended to travel bans and other embargoes for senior military and political leaders “until a genuine commitment to the principles of rule of law, justice, fair play and human rights can be demonstrated beyond rhetoric and half-hearted measures by the government”.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Shiites leader has been state detention in Abuja since December 2015 following a raid of his residence in Zaria by operatives of the Nigerian Army.

  • VIDEO: Why Buhari is yet to release El-Zakzaky – Lai Mohammed

…Says he (El-Zakzaky) is in ‘protective custody’

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said the leader of the Islamic Movement In Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, is still in protective custody because the federal government is yet to build him a house as ordered by the court.

According to the Minister, the court ruled that El-Zakzaky be released after his house has been rebuilt.

He explained that nobody in the country wants to accept him as a neighbour, adding that the federal government decided to keep him in a safe place in Abuja.

Mohammed maintained that contrary to reports, the Shiite leader, who was arrested by the Army in December 2015, is not in prison, Department of State Services or police custody.

Rather, he said El-Zakzaky is in protective custody with his family, adding that the Federal government cannot be accused of disobeying court orders with regards to the Shiite leader and the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd).

Lai spoke during a monitored programme on Channels television on Thursday.

In his words: “I think there is a lot of deliberate misunderstanding on these issues. Number one, if a judgment is given and that judgment is appealed, you cannot accuse the government of violating that order if the appeal has not been decided.

Two, in the case of El-Zakzaky, how many Nigerians know that El-Zakzaky is not in prison custody, police custody nor DSS custody? El-Zakzaky is in a house with his family. This is the honest truth.

He is in what is called protective custody. The court ruled that he be released after his house has been rebuilt but nobody wants to accept El-Zakzaky as a neighbour. So, we have been unable to build the house. So, where do we release him to?

In the case of Dasuki, every government will always thread this very thin line between personal liberty and national security. And I think you must give the government the credit to determine what is national security. In the case of Sambo Dasuki, the issue is a grave one.

If the person is in possession of $1.2 billion; there are records that he moved in one day $1.2 billion in two transactions – we know the banks he moved them to. And you refused to tell us what you have done with that money, I don’t think it would be prudent to jeopardise the national security of a whole nation because of the individual freedom of one person. Because with $1.2 billion, you can destabilise a whole country.

You see, all those who have been disturbing us about rule of law or the other, I just wish they would have the opportunity to be in government for a short time and they will see how difficult it is to balance personal freedom with national security.”

  • Why Buhari wont release Dasuki, El-Zakzaky, others despite court orders – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has explained why the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government is flouting court orders regarding release of former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (Rtd) and leader/founder of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, widely known as Shi’ite, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Mohammed said the government flouts court orders in the interest of national security.

The minister said this while featuring on Osasu show.

Responding to a question on why Dasuki and El-Zakzaky have continued to remain in detention, Mohammed said the judiciary does not have the entire picture on the cases.

Mohammed said, “Every government will balance national security with human rights; every country in the world. It is the level of the balancing.

As a government, I will balance national security against human rights; and then I will take a decision. Because there is security, there is stability, that the courts also exist.

What I am saying (is) that the court has ruled but the court does not have the entire picture when it comes to national security. I am a lawyer too, therefore I have utmost respect for the judiciary”.

The Minister stressed that Nigerians cannot pick one or two cases and conclude that the Buhari government is a government of impunity.

You cant pick two, three cases which bother on national security to condemn a whole government and say this government is a government of impunity.

How many cases are determined daily in Nigeria? I still say every government has that right to balance national security”, he said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that there has been several court rulings ordering the release of both Dasuki and El-Zakzaky from detention.

  • Release Dasuki, El-Zakzaky from unlawful detention now, Sagay tells Buhari

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has called on the Federal Government to obey court orders regarding the detention of embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.); and the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky by releasing them without further delay.

The senior advocate advised the Federal Government to either obey the court order by immediately releasing them or to appeal the orders.

Sagay said this in an interview with The Punch.

“The court orders should be obeyed and I don’t know what reason the government has for not releasing them. If they have good reasons, they should canvass the reasons before the court and leave the court to decide.

“If the court rules against them, then they should appeal against the ruling and then apply for stay of the ruling pending the appeal. That is what the government should do rather than detaining them perpetually,” Sagay added.

The PACAC chairman also agreed with the NBA regarding the prolonged probe of judges without trial.

The NBA had, on Monday, asked the Federal Government to immediately stop the investigation of the judges so that they could return to work.

Sagay, however, called on the government to wrap up the probe by prosecuting the judges immediately or by dropping the cases.

He added, “The Federal Government should hurry up and if they cannot file the adequate charges, then they should inform the people involved and allow them to continue with their careers on the bench.”

The PACAC chairman, however, disagreed with the NBA regarding the non-confirmation of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

The association had called on the legislature and the executive to work out their differences, adding that Magu’s issue had made Nigeria a laughing stock among the comity of nations.

Sagay argued that the NBA’s concern was misplaced as the President was empowered by the constitution to make some appointments without recourse to the Senate.

He stated, “What makes Nigeria a laughing stock in the face of the world?

“It is clear that the President can appoint an acting head of any of the agencies and that has been done. It is also clear from the terms of Section 176 of the Constitution that the President can appoint a person outright head, not even acting, without consulting anybody.

When the charge was read, the defendants pleaded not guilty.
