I have absolute confidence in Akpabio, Otu leadership -Senator Gershom

    Wevole Ezin, Calabar

Senator Gershom Bassey has expressed confidence in the aspiration of a
leading contender for the position of Senate President in the tenth
National Assembly, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, describing him as a sound candidate.

He spoke in an interview with selected newsmen on recent developments unfolding in the country, yesterday in Calabar.

Bassey, who is the Senator representing Cross River Southern
Senatorial District in the Senate, also threw his weight behind the
Cross River State governor-elect, Mr. Bassey Ot u.

He disclosed that Akpabio; a former Senator, is not only a ranking Senator in the South South zone, both also the most qualified considering his antecedent and capacity.

Bassey said he was in support of the ruling party’s decision to zone the position to the South-South zone, adding that it was a deserving concession.

While responding to questions, he said: “My view is that Godswill Akpabio is a sound candidate and it is only fair that a guy like us should be given an opportunity, especially since he is from the
    South-South zone.

“First of all, I believe that South-South deserves it, so I am in
agreement with the APC for zoning it to the South-South. Godswill Akpabio is the most qualified because he is the only ranking Senator that APC has in the South-South and when you look at his precedence, he has the experience and capacity.”

At the state level, he cautioned the Cross River State governor-elect,
Prince Bassey Otu to be conscious of sycophants in the corridor of
power to guide against avoidable mistakes.

He advised the Otu’s led administration to increase the state’s revenue profile in order to succeed.

According to him, without any iota of doubt, Otu will succeed because
he has the required temperament and capacity to lead.

Bassey described Ot u’s victory at the poll as an excellent choice for the governorship seat, adding that it was also a plus for the back to south movement in the State.

He partly said: “Going into governance is a serious business and I would advise him to surround himself with quality people who will not be sycophants, but would give him quality advise and help him in governance and deliver on various sub-mandates.

“He is coming in at a time where Cross River State does not have a lot of money, so I want to encourage him to ensure that he finds a way to increase revenues in Cross River State, and if he can do that, then he would have solved a lot of problems.

“I think he is going to do well because he had the temperament and capacity to do well and I wish him well.”

NASS leadership battle: CSO moves against Betara, Yari, alleges financial infractions

…seeks Court Order to compel EFCC, Police, DSS to arrest, probe aspirants

The NASS leadership battle has taken a new turn as Legal and Investigative unit of Civil Society Central Coordinating Council, (CCC) is currently filling a mandamus suit to compel anti graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to arrest and investigate Former Zamfara Governor and Senator-elect, Abdulaziz Yari and serving House of Representatives member, Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, over alleged money laundering and other financial crimes.

The duo are currently eyeing the Senate Presidency and Speakership seats despite the All Progressive Congress, APC zoning arrangement.

The CCC in a statement by unit head, Maxwell Aleto, is specifically seeking a court order for EFCC, Police, DSS to probe what it refers to as “their questionable source of funds and expenditures above legitimate income.”

The CCC is also seeking a court order to allow security agencies search the duo’s houses and offices and that of their associates.

The statement reads, “Betara who represents Biu/Bayo/Shani federal constituency is the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation. He’s one of the G7 aggrieved speakership aspirants plotting to go against the rules of their party. Reports on the streets is that Betara and Yari are allegedly throwing money around and trying to use that to compromise lawmakers.

“It’s really sad that when the nation is in need for competent leadership, people with questionable income and character are trying to be in leadership position. In particular, Former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari was on several occasions grilled by the EFCC for alleged illegal financial dealings and misappropriation of funds.

“It was reported that in February last year that Yari faced a long interrogation session with detectives at the Lagos office of the EFCC over an alleged attempt to illegally move N300 billion from a corporate account in a new generation bank,” the group said.

10th NASS: CSO alleges ‘Supreme Court’ Gov, Uzodinma is using Hon Miriam to work against Tinubu

… insists Gov should halt activities of Miriam, G7

The legislative unit of Civil Society Central Coordinating Council, has accused Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma of using House of Representatives member, Hon. Miriam Onuoha to work against President Bola Tinubu.

The group speaking through its lawyer, Barr. Anderson Achilike urged the governor to prove that he’s a party man by putting an end to his activities with Hon. Onuoha.

According to the group, despite the decision of the All Progressive Congress, APC national working committee to micro-zone the Deputy Speakership position to Abia lawmaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Uzodimma in his usual selfish nature instead of helping to unite the Igbos towards one just course, is causing division by aiding the ambition of Onuoha.

The group said, “Supreme Court Governor, Uzodimma is part of the brain box behind the G-7 whom are disrespecting and causing disunity in the party. Instead of advising Onuoha to jettison her ambition and support her Igbo brother, he’s using her to do more harm than good. It’s not surprising as the Imo Rep member just like her Governor was unjustly installed despite her closest opponent, Obinna Onwubualiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeating her in the election.

“It’s still unclear what Uzodimma hopes to achieve by going against his party’s choice, but once we uncover it we will definitely not hesitate to let Nigerians know. We urge Uzodimma to put an end to his anti party activities, stop meddling in Nass politics and support APC’s consensus candidate, Hon. Benjamin Kalu as the next Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

Tinubu’s lawyers complain as Tribunal admits BVAS report, others as exhibit

The Presidential Election Petition Court sitting in Abuja has admitted the 2023 presidential election results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s chairman, Yakubu Mahmoud, as an exhibit in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, against the electoral victory of President Bola Tinubu.

The results were admitted following an oral application by the PDP lawyer, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN.

Jegede also applied to tender as evidence, INEC Forms EC8A (which is the summary of presidential election results), Form EC8E series for the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, INEC Certified documents in respect of number of PVCs collected for 2023 presidential election and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System BVAS machine printed report for the 36 states including FCT.

The court then asked the lawyers representing INEC, Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress if they have any objection to the documents that the PDP sought to tender.

Responding, INEC’s counsel, A.B. Mahmoud SAN, did not object to the certified copy of the final results declared by the INEC chairman.

But he said he would object to the other documents because they were bulky and needed to be appropriately numbered.

On his part, Tinubu’s legal team led by Wole Olanipekun SAN did not consent to the admission of the BVAS reports.

He contended that the BVAS reports are more like an evidence that needs to be vetted by them before it can be admitted.

The legal team for the APC also aligned with the submission of Tinubu’s lawyer, Olanipekun.

Nevertheless, the five-man panel of the court led by Justice Haruna Tsammani admitted all the documents tendered by the PDP while taking note of the respondents’ refusal to give consent to its admission.

The court subsequently adjourned to Wednesday for continuation of hearing.

Recall that in its pre-hearing report, the PEPC had ordered that all INEC certified documents be admitted and not objected to at the point of admission, as agreed by parties.

According to the court, this was to fast-track the case.
