Speakership: 12, out of 14 Oyo Reps-Elect throw weight behind Abbas, Kalu

Twelve Oyo state House of Representatives members-elect have thrown their weight behind Honourables Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.

In some documents obtained from a session held by the lawmakers, 12 Reps-elect out of the 14 seats in the State appended their signatures supporting the duo’s positions as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

Among those who endorsed the duo are Reps members from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and those of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The list as sighted by TNG correspondent, shows the Reps members who endorsed Hon Tajudeen as Speaker and Hon Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker:
Hon Akeem Adeyemi, Hon Stanley Adedeji, Hon Abass Adigun Agboworin,
    Hon Lafisoye Akinmoyede and
    Hon Bayo Adepoju respectively.

Others include Hon Ojo Sunday Makanjuola, Hon Lamiju Alao-Akala,
    Hon Kareem Tajudeen Abisodun,
Hon Oyedeji Oyeshina, Hon Olaide Lateef, Hon Aderemi Oseni and Hon Akin Alabi.

The lawmakers, made up of both returning and newly elected members chose to work on the side of the Joint Task – 10th Assembly, a coalition of members from the 8 political parties with seats in the incoming House which drives the APC zoning and the Abbas/Kalu joint ticket ahead of the June 13th inauguration.

Speakership: G-7 will soon fizzle out – Joint Task Group declares, vows to deliver Abass, Kalu

…slams group for saying Abass is not popular

The Joint Task Coalition of the incoming 10th National Assembly has said that the G-7 group comprising of eminent lawmakers will soon fizzle out into oblivion.

The group also advanced moves and processes aimed at making the delivery of Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively, a smooth sail on the day of inauguration on June 13, 2023.

Recall that the Coalition which is comprised of the 8 political parties (APC, PDP, LP, NNPP, APGA, SDP, ADC and YPP) that won various seats in the incoming 10th National Assembly at the just concluded February 25 general elections resolved to work together with a view to implementing the APC zoning arrangement and prevent any form of rebellion within the House against the ruling party and its incoming administration.

Consequently, the group has since backed the nomination of Abbas and Kalu by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as its preferred candidates for the offices, just as it also seeks to promote cooperation between the legislature and executive, amongst others.

Speaking on behalf of the group on an Arise TV programme titled “This Week” monitored in Abuja, its secretary a returning member-elect from Kano State, Hon. Aliyu Sani Madaki said the members have resolved to give a block vote, adding that the G7, a group of other aggrieved aspirants poses no threat whatsoever to them, saying it would soon fizzle out.

He said: “If you look at it, the Joint Task itself is a kind of gang up. I’m from NNPP, the co-chair (Chinda) is a PDP member, the Chairman is of the APC. A few days back, a greater chunk of the opposition came together and endorsed Abass. I can bet you the 10th Assembly intends to work as a group and on that day, we will work as a group and speak as one.

“By the time we finish this interview, they could become G2 or G1, these are all people I know who are my friends and who are qualified to be Speaker but, we can only have one Speaker at a time. And the best amongst all is Hon. Tajudeen Abbas,” he declared.

Madaki also said that the stepping down of the trio of the outgoing leader of the 9th Assembly, Hon. Ado Doguwa, Hon. Abdulraheem Olawuyi and and Hon. Makki Abubakar Yalleman was a needed boost to their campaign.

The highly outspoken lawmaker added that the country needed the best hand at the national parliament to effectively drive the machinery of governance.

He also revealed that they from the NNPP have the blessings of the party’s leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to support Abbas.

“On three contestants stepping down for Tajudeen Abbas, that should not come as a surprise to Nigerians. That’s part of politics and politicking, I believe that’s good for our democracy.

“We at the Joint Task-10th Assembly Coalition believe that we should have a very robust democracy and rancour free House of Representatives where our main concern, main focus should be the well-being of the Nigerian citizen, and how to do it is to select leaders based on competence, intellect, capacity. We believe if that’s done irrespective of party, we will have an Assembly that Nigerians will be proud of.

“As at now, it’s not about having a working relationship between the APC and the NNPP. It’s about having a National Assembly that will work for Nigerians irrespective of tribe, religion or whatever differences we have in this country.

“If we don’t have his (Kwankwaso) blessings, you won’t see myself and other members being in the Joint Task.

“For this country to move forward, we have to do away with all these sentiments and pick the best from amongst ourselves. The Joint Task wants to do what’s obtainable everywhere.

“The best practice in democracies is that the party with majority of members in that Assembly is allowed to pick who will be the presiding officers.

“But in allowing the party, we at the Joint Task decided to have certain criteria, and those are: what’s your level of intellect, your contribution to the House? Abass Tajudeen, if you look at his resume, you will see he has brought 74 bills, and 21 of them have been assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari. That’s not a small feat.

” I have been in the parliament for eight years, I have only one bill to my name, although in the Eighth Assembly, I have the highest number of motions”, he said.

The Secretary of the Joint Task Team however disagreed with those who ascribed unpopularity to the person of Abbas, describing it as an “indictment on them” to say that a lawmaker who sponsored over 74 bills and got 21 of them assented by the President was not known amongst his contemporaries.

Madaki who vouched the credibility, intellectuality and comportment of Abbas, said he remains the most competent to lead the 10th House.

“I beg to disagree, what’s the process of getting your bill assented to? It goes for first, second readings, then public hearing and third reading to get it passed. If you have 21 bills in an Assembly, any member in that Assembly claims not to know that person, that means that member doesn’t go to sittings. That will be a very big indictment on that member. Maybe, his statement is part of politicking.

“He has the comportment to handle issues in the House. I have known him for eight years and I can attest to the fact that he’s somebody who can tolerate a lot of things. He’s willing to listen, he’s total level of comportment is very suitable for a Speaker of House of Representatives.

“Abass was a primary school teacher, a lecturer, was a manager at British-Nigeria Tobacco Company. He’s a member of House of Representatives from 2011 till date. That alone tells you that he must have come to the place with something which makes his constituents elect him three times. Currently, he’s the Chairman Committee on Land Transport and he’s a Ph.D holder and he has 21 bills assented to by Mr. President”, Madaki said.

The lawmaker also denied speculations in many quarters that Abbas was a project of the outgoing House Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as APC’s compensatory measure to the contributions of the outgoing Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.

In his opinion, the aspirant’s lofty ideals, patriotism and qualifications distinguished him from others.

“Why didn’t El-Rufai give it to any other member in Kaduna? They have 16 members from the state, why Tajudeen? Because he felt he has the intellect. To have any bill passed you must have a good working relationship with your colleagues.

” If members don’t like you, your bills won’t see the light of day. And it’s not true that the zoning is a compensation to El-Rufai. The main person who brought the idea that Tajudeen should contest for Speakership is the vice chairman of his committee not Gbajabiamila.

“The Speaker was sold into the issue by members especially Tajudeen’s Deputy Chairman. And let me tell you something about the House of Representatives, if you’re Chairman of a committee, your biggest enemy is your Deputy. They don’t see eye-to-eye. So, for Abass because of his character and attitude his Deputy Chairman started this whole thing. He’s a man that will deliver”, Madaki said.

Speakership: Member elect, Dr. Midala Balami predicts Betara’s victory +Photo

The newly elected House of Representatives member representing Askira Uba/ Hawul federal constituency, Dr. Midala Balami has predicted a total and comprehensive victory of Rt. Hon Mukhtari Aliyu Betara as the speaker of the 10th assembly.

He noted that the election of Batara as the speaker of the 10th assembly is sacrosanct considering the massive support and goodwill he commanded from both the newly elected and ranking members of the house of representatives.

Balami who was elected on the crest of PDP made the prediction on the sidelines of the 76 general church council (GCC) Majalisa 2023 of the Eklisiyar Yan Uwa a Nigerian (EYN) where he and four others were honoured over their electoral victory, stated that no fewer than 200 newly elected members have made up their minds to elect Betara as the next speaker of house of representatives.

“Without hedging or the fear of contradiction, I stand here today to reveal to you that God’s willing, Betara is our next speaker. I’m telling you for a fact that no one stands a chance against Betara as far as election is concerned.

“Betara is a broad-minded, down to earth and the most cosmopolitan and progressive ranking member in the house of representatives. If election is a game of numbers, then the victory of Betara is a concluded issue because he enjoyed a cult like followerhip by both the new members elect and the ranking members.

“He is also a rallying force, a bridge builder, and the most reliable pillar upon which the unity and stability of the house rest. He is one man whose primary concern is the unity and development of Nigeria. He treats people fairly and with dignity without recourse to their class, creed or social status. He is the most detribalised and urbane leader in the house. That is why he is the candidate to beat in the next election,” he said.

Balami who excoriated the ruling party for zoning the speakership position noted that the posture of the ruling party to exclude many from joining the race is anti-democratic urging the party to recant the undemocratic stance or has itself to blame.

“As a PDP member I’m not party to the zoning arrangement of the APC it is their own party affair. But form a broader perspective, I want to say as an independent legislature, that action does not resonate with me and when I consulted with my people, they unanimously rejected the approach.

“That kind of approach is a wrong approach for democracy. To deepen our democracy, we require an independent legislature. And the legislature can only be independent when it is allowed to elect a leadership that will pilot its affairs without interference. Today, I have an opportunity to particularly endorse Hon. Mukhtari Aliyu Betara for the speaker of the 10th assembly 2023.

“By the grace of God we will be there and we are going to vote for him because he has the skills, he has the experience, he has the capacity and competence to not only pilot the affairs of the legislature but also to carry other Nigerians along.

“We are at a cross road in Nigeria, this calls for efficient and effective leadership that will work for the unity and progress of Nigeria. That is why we will vote Betara,” he said.

Surrender to us after handover, EFCC tells Gov Matawalle

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has advised Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle to surrender after handover over alleged N70billion fraud.

Recall it was earlier reported that EFCC said it was currently probing Matawalle and there was therefore apprehension at the Government House, Gusau.

Also, Matawalle of Zamfara had accused the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, of being corrupt.

The governor, in a press statement on Wednesday, personally signed by him and sent to media channels, had said Bawa should also surrender himself for investigation.

According to Matawalle, he and some eminent Nigerians have evidence to substantiate Bawa’s corrupt practices and abuse of office.

Meanwhile, in a press release, the anti-graft agency on Thursday said Matawalle would be arrested as soon as he handed over on May 29.

“The Commission would like to put the nation on notice to expect more of the kind of wild allegations made by Matawalle as those at the receiving end of EFCC’s investigations, fight viciously back.

“But the real issue with Matawalle is that he is being investigated by the EFCC, over allegation of monumental corruption, award of phantom contracts and diversion of over N70billion.

“The money which was sourced as loan from an old generation bank purportedly for the execution of projects across the local government areas of the state, was allegedly diverted by the governor through proxies and contractors who received payment for contracts that were not executed.

“The Commission’s investigations so far reveal that more than 100 companies have received payments from the funds, with no evidence of service rendered to the state. Some of the contractors who had been invited and quizzed by the Commission, made startling revelations on how they were allegedly compelled by the governor to return the funds received from the state coffers back to him through his aides after converting the same to United States Dollars.

“They confirmed that they did not render any service to Zamafara state but were allegedly directed to convert the monies paid to them into United States Dollar and return to the State governor through some of his commissioners, notably the Commissioners in charge of Finance and Local Government Affairs.

“One of the contractors, a popular Abuja property developer, collected N6billion on a N10billion contract without rendering any service to Zamfara state. Another contractor collected over N3billion for a contract for the supply of medical equipment but the Commission traced a payment of N400million from his account to a Bureau de Change operator. The contractor confessed the payment was to procure the dollar equivalent allegedly for the state governor.

“As part of the extensive investigation of contracts awarded by the Matawalle administration, especially for phantom projects in the local government areas, the Commission has recovered a sum of N300million from a company, Fezel Nigeria Limited. The funds were traced to the Zamafara Investment Company.

“The EFCC investigation is the source of anxiety in Government House, Gusau, with the governor in mortal dread of his fate once he steps down as governor on May 29. In Nigeria state governors and their deputies enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution while in office, a reason the EFCC has yet to arrest Governor Matawalle.”

  • Blinken’s call to Tinubu: Keyamo mocks Obi, says he should climb down from his high horse

Blinken’s call to Tinubu: Keyamo mocks Obi, says he should climb down from his high horse

… insists there’s clarity as to the basis of the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken’s call to @official ABAT

Festus Keyamo, SAN has taken a swipe at LP’s presidential candidate Peter Obi advising him to climb down from his high horse after his attempt to query US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken’s call to President-elect Bola Tinubu.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports Keyamo who was apparently reacting to Obi’s comment that his call to Tinubu was ill-timed, the Minister of Labour and Productivity rubbished his position via his tweeter handle saying:

“Your Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, | am sorry, but there is clarity as to the basis of the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken’s call to @official ABAT and their pledge for support and cooperation.

“It’s obvious that you and your supporters have overrated your noise and tantrums after the election as having any real effect internationally.

“No, they have not had any such massive effect as you would wish. Unfortunately for you, the US have dealt with so many opposition figures around the world and they know exactly how to separate facts from fictions. They know you lost, fair and square.

“They know that in a complex society like Nigeria you could not have won with your message of ‘religious war’.

Keyamo further explained that:”They know you’re just a splinter of the main opposition, the PDP, so it amounts to delusions of grandeur to think that you won when you actually came third.

They also know the declaration of a winner. They also know the declaration of a winner already announced by INEC has the force of law and is the only acceptable legal framework upon which to proceed than your Petition in court that is yet to be decided upon.

“You really want this country to stand still because you have a case in court? Is that what we have practiced in this country for decades?

“Recall, sir, that when you won your second term in office as Governor of Anambra State, your opponents were in the Tribunal when you were sworn in and you got congratulatory messages from across Nigeria and the world.

” Did you reject those congratulatory messages because your opponents were in court? Why are you now misleading these largely hapless mob trooping blindly after you? Why? As you are going about with this pretentious holier-than-thou attitude, a court of law just nullified the nomination of a number of your Party’s candidates at the last election.

” Are you not more worried about this development, even as it affects your own nomination as the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate? Mr. Peter Obi, your pontifications about the last are getting very worrisome they are beneath you

“Party’s Presidential candidate” Mr. Peter Obi, your pontifications about the last Presidential election are getting very worrisome. They are beneath you. They are designed only to appeal to the mob.

“You know you lost the election; we know you know; and you know we know that you know.

“Please, come down from your high horse @ Peter Obi. There is still a lack of clarity on the basis of the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken’s call to APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on 16th May 2023. The most fundamental tenet and core value of democracy is the rule of law.

Court shuns Apapa faction’s lawyer, others, refused to recognize them

There was confusion on Friday at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja as justices of the court failed to recognise counsel for the Lamidi Apapa led-Labour Party faction.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that just last Wednesday the factional leader was humbled out of the court.

The drama started when the tribunal began pre-hearing session of the petition filed by Labour Party and its candidate, Peter Obi, prompting Awa Kalu to announce appearance for the party.

Kalu, was however, countered by Oba Maduabuchi, another counsel, who rose to announce appearance also for the Labour Party, the Lamidi Apapa faction.

He informed the court that he was handed the brief to represent the party.

The Court subsequently intervened, stating that the Apapa faction did not file the petition, and as such cannot present legal representation for the Labour Party.

The court further added that there cannot be two counsels representing the party.

  • Independence of legislature will strengthen Nigeria’s democracy -YAPJEN

Independence of legislature will strengthen Nigeria’s democracy -YAPJEN

Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu, the Executive Director of Youth Advocates For Peace Justice And Empowerment Network (YAPJEN), a global goals, good governance and human rights advocacy organisation, has called on Nigeria’s National Assembly members-elect to exert the independence of the legislature by electing among themselves the most competent lawmakers without corruption baggages.

Nwachukwu while speaking in an interview with Kaftan Television, Abuja, explained that under the Nigerian constitution, there are three branches of government: the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary, while the three arms have their functions cut out for them by the constitution, saying that they exist to complement one another and are not expected to operate as standalone bodies or foes.

“Democracy is built on the independence of the three equal arms, namely Executive, Legislature and Judiciary and hence it thrives on the principle of checks and balances. Thus, having a country that works for all requires synergy and collaboration between the Legislature and the Executive, which will ultimately bring about good governance for the country.”

Nwachukwu observed that; “The interference and intrusion into the legislature by the executive arm of the government by earmarking and anointing a leadership for the presidency of the senate made up of 109 senators and a speaker for the House of Representatives made up of 360 elected representatives from different political parties which serves as the melting pot of Nigeria’s democracy.”

He warned that a legislature leadership appointed by the executive arm of the government cannot checkmate the excesss of the executive or carry out its constitutionally assigned oversight function which include monitoring, reviewing scrutinizing and evaluating the performance of the executive arm of government or its agencies on a continuous basis to ensure effectiveness, efficiency and good performance.

“Where the leadership of the legislature is appointed by the executive, such legislative arm becomes an appendage of the executive commonly referred to as rubber stamp’ parliament. Thus, its resolutions would ultimately be ignored and sometimes its summons will not be obeyed by members of the executive branch of government.”

X-raying the outgoing 9th Assembly, Nwachukwu observed that the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives worked in partnership with the executive arm, even when their cooperation portrayed the two legislative houses as rubber stamp by approving foreign and local loans for the executive without due deligence and oversight, thus plunging the nation into a debt ridden crisis that may take decades for Nigeria to exit.

He advised that the newly elected and re-elected lawmakers should elect a principal officers that will not pander to the whim and caprices of the executive but would rather be responsible, responsive, accountable and answerable to the generality of Nigerians whose mandate they hold in trust.
