Speakership: You can’t give El-Rufai speaker’s position as political benefits – Group tells Tinubu, NWC

…asks Tinubu to nullify Abass’s candidature

…says it’s a clear imposition as it violates Section 50 sub section 1b

A group under the aegis of Renewed Hope Professionals, RHP on Tuesday slammed the APC NWC and President-elect Bola Tinubu for compensating the governor of Kaduna, Nasr El-Rufai with the position of speaker of the House of Representatives.

Declaring that the coveted position is not an instrument to for political compensation.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that on Monday, the NWC announced Hon Tajudeen Abass and Godswill Akpabio as consensus candidates for Speaker and Senate President.

The group in a statement signed by its Coordinator, Kinu Kabirwa, asserted that the announcement of both lawmakers as leaders of the tenth Assembly was a clear violation of Section 50 sub section 1b of the constitution of the Federal Republic as amended.

“Democracy is now under serious threat with this imposition concocted by the outgoing speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and the NWC to further compound the grave political situation in Nigeria.

“As a Group of professionals with the interest of APC at heart we plead with the President-Elect to immediately nullify this organised crime imposed on lawmakers and allow a free level playing ground for the legislators to pick their leaders.

“It’s an abberation that must be quickly checkmated before it develops into an hydread monster capable of turning the legislature into an unwarranted war zone over the personal interests of few disgruntled elements in the party.

“The question bothering us now is how did the NWC and their cohorts carried out the selection process and what yardstick was used to arrive at an Abass that his state delivered just four Reps?

“Was competence, equity, fairness and fairness considered in the scheme of things or it was just an outright imposition to further truncate our shaky democracy?

“The above questions are begging for answers and we want our leaders to truly look into this as the position of Deputy Senate President too has been zoned to North West.

“Automatically, the North West is going to control two powerful positions in the next political dispensation.

Speakership: Despite NWC endorsement, Betara’s aspiration receives massive boost+Photos

…as outgoing deputy speaker, Wase, Doguwa condemn anointment of Abass

…vow to fight for independence of parliament

Aspiration of Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Hon. Aliyu Betara, has received a massive boost with the condemnation of the All Progressives Congress (APC’s) choice of Abass Tajudeen for speakership of the 10th by strategic members who are also race.

Betara’s declaration on Monday night was attended by Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Chairman of the Committee on Navy, Yusuf Gagdi and Hon. Sada Soli, both of whom have declared their intention to run for speakership of the assembly.

Wase during his goodwill message faulted APC’s choice of Abass who he said was not known to members of the House, urging his colleagues to guard against any attempt at hijacking the parliament.

“Again, I want to add that we are here to ensure the independence of the parliament. To ensure that we work together. Every Parliamentarian must rise to the occasion. We will work as a team. We will not allow this parliament to be hijacked. We will not allow this parliament to be made a lame duck. I believe we are loyal to our country first, loyal to our party and loyal to our people.

“When you say you have a consensus candidate, the language for consensus is that there have been mass consultations, people go to the table for discussion. There is agreement. In this case, we just saw and we are hearing rumours, speculations that some people have been made consensus candidates. I don’t know whether that is the meaning of consensus. This place is very sacred. We must be honourable in our action in defence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, Wase said.

Also speaking, Doguwa said the parliament must always be allowed to choose its leaders, noting that it was not for outsiders to decide, who leads the House. “One message I want to send across is that the parliament is one institution that must always be allowed to choose its own leaders. The business of our leadership should be solely our business and no other person’s business.

“In a situation where you have some people in whatsoever guise trying to decide our leadership, to form our leadership from outside without consulting us I think that should be seen as a mere failure. I remain available for consultation until that is done, everyone will answer his father’s name”, he said.

Betara in his speech said he was working in collaboration with other aspirants for the project. “My name is Muktar Aliyu Betara. I am from Borno State. Much has been said about Betara. I invited all of you here to declare for the speakership of the 10th Assembly. I am supposed to read this my speech but I think it will take time. All has been said about me. The most important thing today is for me to declare that I am contesting for the speakership.

“Today is our day for members-elect and for former members of the parliament. You are seeing all the aspirants here. They came to support me because we are one family. We are moving as a group. We have been in the system for years. I was a member in the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Assemblies.

He added: “The deputy speaker that we came in together, we have been close and I think I am the best friend to the deputy speaker when we came in the 6th Assembly. We have been in one family, we are together but in politics sometimes he will be on the other side and I will be on the other side. But today we are together for this movement. When I invited him, he joined me today for my declaration here he honoured it and my DS (Deputy Speaker), I am very grateful for the honour you gave me today.

“For my brother Hon. Gagdi, I remember when Gudgi went for his declaration, he said Betara is one man that doesn’t say no and why I cannot say no to my colleagues is sometimes when your colleague comes to you, he needs your assistance, if I can not provide all, at least I can do small. That is the main reason I cannot say no.

“Honourable Colleagues, as the engine room of the legislature, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila gave me a name, he calls me the Head boy. I was surprised for my friend, my boss to nominate one person outside all of us here. If today the deputy speaker of the House is contesting, the chairman Appropriation is contesting, the majority leader is contesting, then who is closer to the speaker? So nobody.

He is bringing one person that members of the 9th Assembly I can tell you some of us even don’t even know the person he is speaking about – a lot of us don’t know him.

Also speaking, Director General of the Betara Campaign Organization, Hon. Dickson Tarkigir said “our constituents and indeed Nigerians are expecting us to break new grounds and approach the new horizon that will be symbolized by life made better for our constituents, and our nation as the ultimate justification for being elected.

“It has been said that to know a healthy fish, check the head, this simple test, instructively is not for fishes alone, but will be apposite in our situation today, to realise that the nature of the personality who leads the 10th assembly House of Representatives, will substantially influence us to succeed or otherwise as individual members and corporately as the House of Representatives.

“It then behooves on us to realise that we must ensure that we elect the next speaker with clarity of thought and sufficient information on a number of parameters.

To assume that just anyone can do the job will be taking a shot in the dark, and that will be failing in our duty.

“The decision must therefore be made consciously, without fear or favour, or ill will”, he added.

Top contenders for the speakership position in the tenth House, Hon Aliyu Betara, Idris Wase, Sani Jaji, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Yusuf Gadgi and others met in the early hours of Tuesday to review the imposition of Hon Tajudeen Abass from Kaduna State as the anointed candidate of All Progressives Congress APC.

Recall that the APC NWC on Monday evening as Betara was declaring his intention to run for the coveted position announced the anointment of Abass.

Details of the meeting was not disclosed but is not unconnected with the announcement as bitterness pervades many camps gunning for the position.

10TH ASSEMBLY: Betara ignores zoning, declares for Speaker

…as outgoing deputy speaker Wase queries choice of Abass as consensus candidate

Hon. Aliyu Betara representing Biu/Bayo/Shani and Kwaya Kusar Federal Constituency of Borno State on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), has officially declared his intention to run for the office of the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

Betara’s declaration comes same day the ruling party announced that it has zoned the position of Speaker of the 10th House to Hon. Tajudeen Abbas (Kaduna State) and Deputy to Hon. Benjamin Kalu (Abia State), and it was obvious that this decision of the party did not go down well with Members-elect.

Betara accused the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila of sponsoring someone who was not popular in the House to succeed him as the next Speaker.

Betara who is the incumbent Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation was joined by fellow contestants like Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase, Leader of the House, Hon. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, Hon. Sani Jaji, Hon. Tunji Olawuyi among others in solidarity.

TheNewsGuru.com, recalls that the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on May 8 officially zoned the Speaker to the North West, while the Deputy Speaker was zoned to the South East.

Meanwhile, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen (APC-Kaduna) was chosen to succeed Gbajabiamila in the 10th assembly while Rep Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia) was anointed as the Deputy Speaker.

Reacting to the development at his declaration, Hon. Betara vowed to go ahead to contest for the position of the Speakers during his official declaration despite the zoning by the party.

According to him, it was a surprised to him when Gbajabiamila nominated Hon. Abass outside of all those seated at the declaration and had indicated interest.

“If today, the deputy Speaker of the House is contesting, the Chairman Appropriation is contesting, the Majority Leader is contesting, then who’s closer to the speaker”, he queried.

Among those who spoke was the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, who faulted the choice of Hon. Tajudeen Abass, by the APC as its consensus candidate for speakership of the 10th Assembly called on lawmakers not to allow the parliament to be hijacked.

Wase said that arriving at a consensus required discussion by critical stakeholders and wide consultations, but none of that was done.

He said, “Again, I want to add that we are here to ensure the independence of the parliament. To ensure that we work together. Every Parliamentarian must rise to the occasion

“We will work as a term. We will not allow this parliament to be hijacked. We will not allow this parliament to be made a lame duck. I believe we are loyal to our country first. Loyal to our party and loyal to our people.

“When say you you have a consensus candidate, the language for consensus is that there have been mass consultations, people go to table for discussion. There is agreement. In this case, we just saw and we are hearing rumors, speculations that some people have been made consensus candidates.

” I don’t know whether that is the meaning of consensus. This place is very sacred. We must be Honourable in our action in defence of the federal republic if Nigeria.”

Also Doguwa who said the parliament must always be allowed to choose its leaders, noted that it is not for outsiders to decide who leads the House.

He stated, “One message I want to pass across is that the parliament is one institution that must always be allowed to choose own leaders.

“The business of our leadership should be solely our business and no other person’s business. In a situation where you have some people in whatsoever guise trying to decide our leadership, to form our leadership from outside without consulting us I think that should be seen as a mere failure.

” I remain available for consultations until that is done , every one will answer his father’s name.”

Other present at the declaration include the Niger State Governor-elect, Hon. Umaru Bago, a serving lawmaker and a close ally of Betara.

Members-elect from across party divides throng the venue of Betara declaration at Lagos/Osun hall of the Transcorp Hilton.

Avoid technicalities, focus on substance, PEPC panel tells lawyers

The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), sitting in Abuja, has asked lawyers representing all those who filed petitions before the court to avoid unnecessary technicalities and address the substance of their petitions.

The five-member panel with Justice Haruna Tsammani as Chairman, said this at the inaugural sitting of the panel.

Newsmen reports that the panel started sitting on Monday to hear petitions filed by aggrieved presidential aspirants against the declaration of Sen. Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winners of the disputed 2023 Presidential Election.

NAN also reports that other members of the panel are Justice Stephen Adah, Justice Misitura Bolaji-Yusuf,
Justice Boloukuoromo Ugo and Justice Abbah Mohammed.

In his opening speech, Justice Tsammani urged the lawyers not to engage in unnecessary technicalities as such could cause delays in the expeditious hearing of the petitions.

“Election is time bound, let us not waste unnecessary time, let us cooperate with each other so that everyone will leave here satisfied.

“Avoid unnecessary technicalities, we are determined to look at all the matters brought before us.

“Let us look at what is good for our country and avoid time wasting applications,” he said.

He said that there were five petitions and the first three petitions would be heard on Monday while the last two would be heard on Tuesday.

Responding, Mr Wole Olanipekun, SAN, said that as lawyers, they were bound by the law abiding and would adhere strictly to the rule of law throughout the proceedings.

Olanipekun gave the assurance that the lawyers would give their full support to the cause.

Other senior advocates also agreed with Olanipekun.

NAN also reports that shortly after the judges recessed after the opening to prepare to hear the petitions, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, walked into the courtroom and exchanged pleasantries with lawyers and litigants in court.

NAN recalls that Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had declared Tinubu winner of the Feb. 25 Presidential Election.

Dissatisfied with the announcement, the candidates of the Labour Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and others dragged the commission, the APC and Tinubu to court challenging his victory.

Members of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) would adjudicate on all petitions filed against the declaration of Tinubu and the APC as winners of the disputed 2023 Presidential Election.

  • Speakership: Your choice of NW is reprehensible, we reject it outrightly -Fmr North Central Reps tell Tinubu

Speakership: Your choice of NW is reprehensible, we reject it outrightly -Fmr North Central Reps tell Tinubu

Former members of the House of Representatives from the North Central geo-political zone of Nigeria on Sunday outrightly rejected the alleged zoning of the speakership position to the North West saying it is reprehensible.

TheNewsGuru .com, (TNG) reports this position was taken after a meeting of major critical stakeholders under the plank of former House of Representatives declaring in their communique that:

“Our forum considers this position said to have been taken by leaders of the APC as utterly reprehensible and totally unacceptable because of the bad blood and acrimony it is capable of generating among the different zones in the country due to its lopsidedness and total insensitivity to the wellbeing and total disregard to others.

“We find it unimaginable that anybody would even mute the idea of handing over two key positions in the National Assembly hierarchy to one zone, given the much the President-elect had invested to convince Nigerians that he will be fair to all.

Leader of the Forum, Hon Yahuza Yakubu further explained that:

“We wish to state without equivocation, that the issue we are addressing here has been carefully considered and treated with all sense of responsibility, while the position we have taken on the matter is in the best interest of the incoming administration of H.E Sen Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and for the greater good of our dear country, Nigeria.

“Having served as federal legislators at various times and contributed immensely to the development of Nigeria and its democracy, we consider it pertinent to continue on the path of offering wise counsels and to intervene whenever we see that the ship of our country appears to be going adrift.

“As responsible citizens we cannot fold our arms and watch when a major decision capable of fundamentally affecting our dear nation negatively and setting it on the path towards increased suspicion and bitter acrimony is being contemplated.

    THE CRUX OF THE MATTER

“After waiting several weeks for the President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other key stakeholders to guide the present crop of elected federal legislators on the zoning of leadership positions in the 10th National Assembly in order to avoid acrimony and rancor, the forum notes that the principles of equity, justice and fairness which should have guided such processes may not have been explored.

“Rather than dwell on a template to promote unity and fairness for national cohesion, the forum observed that what is emerging is an odious stench of bias and lopsidedness that should not even be contemplated in a democracy.

“Reports reaching us indicate that the position of Senate President in the 10th National Assembly, has been zoned to the South-South geopolitical zone, while the position of Deputy Senate President would go to the North-West zone.

“We noted that when this position was made public, stakeholders across the country accepted it with equanimity and calmness due to its inclusion of other zones not yet captured in the top hierarchy of governance in the next administration.

“But to our utter shock and consternation, we learnt that the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives has again also been zoned to the North-West while the position of Deputy Speaker is still being considered.

    OUR POSITION

“The forum considers this position said to have been taken by leaders of the APC as utterly reprehensible and totally unacceptable because of the bad blood and acrimony it is capable of generating among the different zones in the country due to its lopsidedness and total insensitivity to the wellbeing and total disregard to others.

“We find it unimaginable that anybody would even mute the idea of handing over two key positions in the National Assembly hierarchy to one zone, given the much the President-elect had invested to convince Nigerians that he will be fair to all.

“Much as the President-elect is known as a democrat, the forum is of the opinion that the APC will be hard put to explain to Nigerians how some zones would be totally excluded from governance while some are given more than their fair share if this lopsided template of giving the Deputy Senate Presidency and Speakership to the North-west is implemented.

“The forum recalls that it was not for nothing that a tapestry for inclusion was crafted since the return of democracy to Nigeria in 1999 which accommodates all the six geopolitical zones in governance such that the four principal positions in the National Assembly are shared among the zones other than the zones the president and vice president hail from.

“This, we observed, has served to extirpate suspicion of bias and regional acrimony and has helped to deepen democracy and promote unity and national cohesion over the years.

“We note though there may have been some differences along the line, but these are considered as aberrations that need to be corrected by any administration that prides itself as just and fair.

“Therefore, the incoming administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prides itself as the face of a new Nigeria cannot afford to toe the line of insensitivity as it needs to ensure balance and inclusiveness for all the zones in the country.

“We note that if the APC goes ahead with the position of zoning the Senate Presidency to the South-South and both the Deputy Senate Presidency and Speakership to the North-West, it will only succeed in sending the message to the North Central that it considers it a second class enclave which has no stake in the country and that all its labour and contribution to the success of the party at the general elections are not only taken for granted but not appreciated.

“This, we believe, will be a costly mistake as it would create a feeling of discrimination on regional basis which could fundamentally threaten the unity of our dear country.

“Perhaps it will be well at this point to remind the President-elect that the North-Central gave him the highest percentage of votes in the last presidential elections over and above all the zones in the country except the South-west where he comes from.

“A quick check of the overall percentage of the votes polled by each zone in the last presidential elections would reveal that while the North-central gave the APC presidential ticket 41 percent of its total votes, the Northwest came third with the 39 percent it gave the President-elect.

“Worse still, out of seven states, the APC presidential candidate won only in three states of the North-west losing significant numbers in swing states like Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Katsina while in the North-central, he won overwhelmingly in its swing states of Niger, Benue and Kogi.

“Most worrisome is the fact that it is Kaduna State, where the APC performed woefully by losing the three Senate seats and 11 of the 16 House of Representatives seats that is being considered for the Speaker position.

“We consider this as not just as slight to the North Central but an insult to our collective struggles which must readily and urgently be addressed.

    OUR DEMAND

“We therefore demand that while the position of the Senate President can be given to the South for religious balancing and the North-west the Deputy Senate President, that the North Central must be given its due share in the leadership of the 10th National Assembly.

“We ask that since the North Central gave the President-elect the highest percentage number of votes apart from the South-west, that it should be given the Speakership of the 10th Assembly.

“This would come as the fair and just thing to do since the zone has never occupied the seat of Speaker since the return of democracy in 1999 while the Northwest has held it for 12 good years!

“We know that the President-elect having fought for the return of democracy to Nigeria and had served as a senator and state governor is a thorough democrat, hence it behoves on him to take steps that will preserve and deepen our democracy by ensuring inclusiveness in his administration.

“The North Central can boast of an array of experienced and ranking members who when given the opportunity, can preside excellently over the House of Representatives and ensure quality legislation for the good governance of Nigeria.

“We call on the President-elect not to go according to the plan by a few selfish individuals to patronize their cronies but to administer justice and equity to all so that his administration can start on a sound footing.

“We also call on our party elders from the zone including the national chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu; governors; former national chairmen, former governors; former Senate President; ministers, former ministers and other stakeholders to add their voices to the demand for justice to the zone as their continuous silence will only aggravate the intended marginalization of the North Central zone.

…declares that party is deliberately excluding zone

    … endorse outgoing DS, Wase

… insists NW delivered more votes because they have more states

A group under the aegis of North Central APC Stakeholders, on Sunday declared that it is the turn of their geo-political zone to produce the next speaker of the House of Representatives in this dispensation.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports the north east critical stakeholders disclosed this position while briefing journalists on Sunday in Abuja.

Coordinator of the group, Hon Dominic Anancha who led the stakeholders said the alleged zoning of the speakership position to North West was deliberately done to exclude the North Central.

He explained that the President-Elect Bola Tinubu who rode on the zoning arrangements cannot be a violator of same zoning formula that gave him easy ride.

“We have noticed an abnormally in the APC direction as per zoning and if it’s true that the North West will produce the next speaker it’s not going to augur well for our democracy.

“This is a clear disregard to equity, fairness and justice as these are the principles upon which APC was created.

“The President-elect cannot ignore the fact that we from the North Central contributed immensely to his electoral victory as we scored four over six.

“We have the highest number of parliamentarians in the fold of APC outside the South West, in Benue for instance, APC got ten seats out of eleven in the House of Representatives.

“How many lawmakers did Kaduna and Kano garner for APC, in Kano NNPP got 18 seats. In Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa we delivered more lawmakers in the North Central than the North West.

“As for the presidential election we equally gave a good showing with six states, you can’t compare us with North West that has seven states, if we had seven states we would have done better.

“That should not be used as yardstick in measuring performance because we equally delivered four states for APC, Kogi is still hanging and we will get it.

“Our position is that the position of speaker should be zoned to North Central in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice and our choice is Hon Idris Wase.

Speakership race: Why President-elect, Tinubu must allow lawmakers make their choice – Group

… insists Betara has the track records of playing the role of First Among Equals

As the race for the leadership of National Assembly hots up, a group under the aegis of Ethics and Compliance Officers Association (ECOA) has called on the President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to allow federal lawmakers pick those they considered most competent.

In a statement issued and signed by its Executive Secretary, Kinu Kabirwa, the group insisted “the Parliament is controlled and managed by lawmakers by picking those they considered as first among equals.

“In this clime there should be no exceptions as the parliament is expected to work independently churning out legislations to benefit all Nigerians.

“Zoning out the various positions will go a long way in catapulting this arm of government into an abyss of confusion that will do no one no good.

“To this end, we are appealing to both APC and the President-Elect to put this on the front burner and Tinubu as a former lawmaker who knows what is right.

“The lawmakers also have the right to decide who they believe can champion their cause towards achieving maximum results in legislative business.

“A good legislative product like Aliyu Betara present Chairman Reps Committee on Appropriation who had chaired sensitive positions in various assemblies stands out as one aspirant that cannot be sacrificed on the altar of zoning.

“He is one lawmaker that has performed so well in discharging his legislative duties to the envy of his colleagues and without baggage.

The group further explained that such a performing lawmaker should be given the opportunity to ventilate the experience he has acquired over the years.

“He also enjoys a wide acceptance from his colleagues who are clamouring for him to occupy the office.

Members-elect kick against secret adoption of Abbas, Kalu by outgoing Speaker, others

…says it’s an affront on lawmakers

Democrats Alliance for Good Governance (DAGG) on Saturday condemned in strong terms the report making rounds on the “secret adoption” of one of the Aspirants for the position of the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

In the same vein, a group of Members-elect who frowned at the purported “secret adoption” which reportedly took place on Friday night, described the exercise as “an affront on the Parliamentarians and the National Assembly as an Institution.”

The Coalition’s National Coordinator Dr. Williams Martins stated this in a statement made available to Journalists in Abuja.

He said: “We are most jolted and sincerely betrayed especially when we got the hint that the preferred Aspirant was taking by hand to be introduced to the President-elect.

“This development for us is not only demeaning, but degrading and absurd for the calibre of Nigerians who were elected by over 50 million Electorates who voted during the 25th February and Supplementary elections.”

According to the Group, “Men of goodwill and Conscience as well as elected Public Office holders can not afford to fold out hands to allow someone who is being reported to be adopted as Chief of Staff to the incoming President-elect, although a Member-elect in the 10th Assembly, to in a reckless manner feels he can succeed in imposing any Candidate on the People’s Parliament.

“To allow such means, they (Members-elect) are unfit for the task of representation and will definitely fail in holding the Executive Arm of Government to account when the need arises within the span of four years of the 10th Assembly.

The Coalition’s National Coordinator therefore warned against any action that may frustrate a united 10th Assembly and tenets of democracy.

“To put it succinctly, all the actors in the Nigerian projects should be seen as honourable men and women who honour gentlemen discussion and reciprocate same at all times.

“Rather than doing this, we wish to State unequivocally that none of the us as Parliamentarians will subscribe for anything short of what the Constitution stipulates on Independence of the Legislature.

“You’ll recall that some of the Aspirants met with the outgoing Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila to express our grouse about the unhealthy and unparliamentary actions and inactions of adopting his stooge.

“As if they were taken for a ride, the Convener of the meeting, denied the allegation of adopting our Colleague, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas from Kaduna State and Hon. Benjamin Kalu from Abia State as the Deputy Speaker,” he noted.

While calling for a rethink, the Group Coordinator urged President-elect and the outgoing Speaker to desist from any act that could bring their names into disrepute.

“We actually thought that with the way the Speaker spoke to his Colleagues during the closed door meeting was done in genuine faith, but as you can all see it was a deceptive meeting,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, one of the aggrieved lawmakers who spoke under condition of anonymity dismissed insinuations over the alleged ill-feelings against Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and the Spokesman of the House, Hon. Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia).

He said: “While we do not have anything against the person and aspiration of the gentleman, we wish to stress that the will of the people and by extension of Constituents will determine the choice of who to lead the 10th Assembly.

“For us, what played out some few weeks back has further exposed the hidden agenda of the promoters of division among his contemporaries. Rather than reciprocating the kind gestures extended to him by most of the Ranking Members who out of persuasion and honour, stepped down their Speakership ambitions in the wake to the inauguration of the 9th Assembly.

“But it is glaring that nothing can be done to change the nature of the chameleon.

“History will not forgive us if we fail to put in perspective the fallback of the similar antics that produced the anchor of this failed project of imposition and the ill-feelings created by some of the offers dangled before some of the reception adopted to ensure the emergence of the Tajudeen Abbas project. This time, “No Green Card will work”! I repeat again, “No amount of Green Card will work in the 10th Assembly!!!”

“On this note, we wish to State categorically that we will not cave-in to ongoing plan to impose any Candidate on the House by whosoever until a level playing field is created for all the Aspirants who have their own right to choose their Leaders.

“It is worthy to also put on record that, discussions are ongoing among the Aspirants to turn the Parliament into an appendage of the Executive arm of Government.
