Elumelu’s TNOG acquires 45% participating interest in Nigerian Oil Licence

Leading African investment company, Heirs Holdings, has acquired 45 percent participating interest in Nigerian oil licence OML 17 and other assets from the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Total E&P Nigeria Limited and ENI.

In a statement on Friday, the company said one of its subsidiaries, TNOG Oil and Gas Limited would have sole operatorship of the asset.

The statement also stated that the transaction is one of the largest oil and gas financings in Africa in more than a decade, with a financing component of $1.1 billion, provided by a consortium of global and regional banks and investors.

According to the statement, the investment demonstrates a further important advance in the execution of the company’s integrated energy strategy and the group’s commitment to Africa’s development through long-term investments that create economic prosperity and social wealth.

It partly read, “OML 17 has a current production capacity of 27,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and, according to our estimates, 2P reserves of 1.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent, with an additional 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent resources of further exploration potential.

“Heirs Holdings’ heritage and approach to business fundamentally underscores its commitment to inclusive development and shared prosperity with its host communities. Heirs Holdings is fully invested in the development of the Niger Delta region.

“Heirs Holdings’ strategy of creating the leading integrated energy business in Africa is executed through a series of strategic portfolio holdings. Transcorp is one of the largest power producers in Nigeria, with 2,000 MW of installed capacity, through ownership of Transcorp Power Plant and the recent acquisition of Afam Power Plc and Afam Three Fast Power Limited.

“Transcorp closed the $300 million Afam acquisitions in November 2020. Transcorp supplies electricity to the Republic of Benin, as part of an emphasis on promoting regional integration and delivering robust power supply to catalyse development in Africa.

“Transcorp also operates OPL281, under a production sharing contract with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Similarly, Heirs Holdings’ subsidiary, Tenoil, is the operator of OPL 2008, under a production sharing contract with NNPC. Tenoil also owns the Ata Marginal Field, which will commence production in Q2, 2021, with 3,500 barrels of oil per day.”

The Chairman, Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu, said the group has a clear vision of creating Africa’s first integrated energy, a global quality business, uniquely focused on Africa and Africa’s energy needs.
He also stated that the acquisition of such asset, with significant potential for further growth, is a strong statement of Heirs Holdings’ confidence in Nigeria, the Nigerian oil and gas sector and a tribute to the extremely high-quality management team.

Elumelu said, “As a Nigerian, and more particularly an indigene of the Niger Delta region, I understand well our responsibilities that come with stewardship of the asset, our engagement with communities and the strategic importance of the oil and gas sector in Nigeria. We see significant benefits from integrating our production, with our ability to power Nigeria through Transcorp, and deliver value across the energy value chain.”

Speaking further, he said “I would like to thank Shell, Total and ENI, for the professionalism of the process, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, and the NNPC for the confidence they have placed in us.”

On his part, the President/GCEO of Transcorp, Owen Omogiafo, said the deal demonstrates Transcorp’s integrated energy strategy and its determination to power Africa.

UBA chairman, Tony Elumelu demands apology, threatens to sue Senator Akinyelure over N41bn NITEL fraud allegations

The Chairman of United Bank of Africa (UBA), Mr. Tony Elumelu has threatened to sue Senator Ayo Akinyelure, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions over a statement alleging the involvement of UBA and indictment of Mr. Elumelu in a N41 (Forty One Billion Naira) fraud relating to NITEL in liquidation.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG had reported on Saturday how the bank categorically denied knowledge of the alleged fraud.

Acting on behalf of their clients (Elumelu) , RA Lawal-Rabana (SAN) and Kemi Balogun (SAN) in a joint statement signed on (Friday) 31, July 2020 but released on Monday (today) said the Senator’s claim were false, baseless and mischievous.

Owing to the extent of damages of the allegations to Elumelu and UBA’s image, the legal teams demanded a public apology and retraction of the said statements credited to the senator.

Failure to comply will result in full legal action against the senator.

    Read full statement below:

FALSE AND MALICIOUS PUBLICATIONS BY SENATOR AYO AKINYELURE AGAINST UBA PLC AND ITS CHAIRMAN, MR. TONY O. ELUMELU, CON.

We write on behalf of Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, CON (our Client) whose attention has been drawn to several false online publications credited to Senator Ayo Akinyelure, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions alleging the involvement of UBA and indictment of Mr. Elumelu in a N41 (Forty One Billion Naira) fraud relating to NITEL in liquidation.

Our Client is shocked by this false, baseless, and mischievous allegation as neither him nor any of the organisations associated with him has ever been involved in or indicted for any fraud as was falsely alleged by Senator Ayo Akinyelure.

Our Client is also alarmed and appalled by this deliberate peddling of falsehood and misinformation against an unblemished personal and business reputation, painstakingly built by our Client over several decades with great personal sacrifice and unquestionable integrity.

Our Client rejects Senator Akinyelure’s attempt to use the platform of the respected institution of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to accomplish whatever ulterior motives he may have.

It is important to emphasise that when UBA appeared before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, attention was drawn to the fact that the facts and circumstances leading to the disputes on the alleged financial indebtedness was pending before the Supreme Court in SC/CV/1 12/2020. It was resolved that given the pendency of the matter at the Supreme Court, it was sub-judice and all actions on the matter be suspended. It is shocking and sacrilegious that a matter pending at the Apex Court could be subjected to debate contrary to the Rules of the Senate and by extension, the principle of law that when a matter is sub-judice, it should not be subjected to debate before a decision is reached by the Court. Therefore, the publications ascribed to Senator Ayo Akinyelure is in total disregard of the Rules of Senate and the Rule of Law

Our Client has instructed us to, and we have demanded an immediate open, public and unreserved retraction of the said statements credited to Senator Akinyelure and an apology from Senator Akinyelure for this false allegation and defamation of our Client.

We have our Client’s further instruction to take all appropriate legal actions against Senator Akinyelure and his media agents if our above stated demand is not met within Seven (7) days of their receipt of our demand letter.

  • Elumelu Advocates Collaborations to Boost Africa’s Fortunes, tips Continent as Key Investment Destination

Elumelu Advocates Collaborations to Boost Africa’s Fortunes, tips Continent as Key Investment Destination

The Group Chairman, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Tony O. Elumelu has said that the Corona virus pandemic has presented a perfect opportunity for foreign investors to invest in Africa, owing to the huge opportunities that are inherent in the African economy.

“This is the time to invest. Africa is a land of opportunities; There is huge population and there is now the realisation by African leaders who are creating an enabling environment to encourage these investments,” Elumelu said on Thursday, while speaking at a virtual session organised by the TIME100TALKS on the theme, ‘Empowering Entrepreneurs’.

Bill Gates, Founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and United States Senator, Tammy Duckworth were other thought leaders who also spoke in sessions at the event.

While pointing out that the African continent is well positioned to emerge into a strong digital economy, Elumelu said, there is now more macro-economic stability than ever before, especially given that the young African is energetic, restless and has the ambition to succeed, in the face of difficult circumstances.

“Challenges exist in Africa, but we have huge returns on investments. There is huge population and there is realisation by African leaders who are now creating an enabling environment to encourage investments into Africa. There is no better time to make the multi-million dollar bet I made in Africa, than the times we live in now,” he said in a chat with Kimberly Dozier, a Time Correspondent who moderated the session.

Speaking on the effect that the pandemic has had on the operations of UBA in the last few months, Elumelu noted that there has been a rapid increase in technological embrace and called for the strengthening of infrastructure, networks and digital platforms to support the growth.

“In banking business this whole digital transformation is heightened further by COVID-19, right now, you have less than 15% of our over 20million bank customers that are transacting in the bank. Most of them now transact online, which is 85% of over 20million customers. That is significant. Before COVID, it was about 65%. UBA is seeing an explosion in its digital platforms. Thankfully, the bank invested significantly in technology, and now, they are investing even more so that they can serve their customers better. So, the digital connectivity technical infrastructure should be strengthened in such a way as to aid this explosion we are seeing,” Elumelu said.

He also spoke on how the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which he founded, has been supporting the growth of its entrepreneurs especially in the tough business climate presented by the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

“Through the TEF virtual platform called the TEFConnect, we are able to engage our entrepreneurs on a day-to-day basis; get resource speakers from all over the world and ourselves, to talk to them and to train them and let them know how to manage difficult moments like this. And I can say that at-least 72% of our 9,500 beneficiaries are hanging in there, expanding their businesses. You know most SMEs typically die after their first year, but we are seeing a different trend, where beneficiaries of our programme in different countries are contributing towards fighting the virus in their different countries. We are seeing the creation of jobs, the one million jobs we set out to achieve,” he noted.

The TEFConnect Community is a meeting ground where entrepreneurship ecosystem players share information and ask questions on their business activity. Currently one million entrepreneurs are on TEFConnect

Elumelu seized the opportunity to call on all bodies and key sectors such as the private sector, public sector, development agencies like the African Development Bank and other institutions to work together to make a difference, adding that “What the world needs today and Africans, in particular, is hope and that to me is what will make the difference but that hope has to be backed by tangibility, some substance so that we can make it work.”

In his submission, Bill Gates sought for collaboration between the private and public sector to end the pandemic, adding “Every country has to think through the right policies to stop the spread, there is need to speed up the process of getting new drugs and vaccines, we need a global response.”

Senator Duckworth who also emphasised the need for funding for teaching and appreciation for teachers, advocated for more teamwork at all levels to fight the pandemic, said, “What the country needs is a team that will step forward to deal with the crisis. It is very significant for me to be on a national stage for other Asian Americans, because we often are the forgotten minority in this country.”

He said his domestic staff also tested negative for the virus.

Elumelu, in a statement on Wednesday, asked Principal Officers and members of the House to go for COVID- 19 test over fear of possible mass infection among legislators.

He said: “I, Hon Ndudi Elumelu, Minority Leader House of Representatives, did another Covid-19 test on Friday 3rd of July with my family and other 11 domestic staff, and am happy to announce that the results came out negative.

“I urge every member and staff of the National Assembly to do same.”

There were speculations on possible prevalence of the virus among lawmakers with unconfirmed report claming over 50 of legislators might have been positive but chose to hide their status.

  • Elumelu Advocates Massive Capital Investment for Africa

Elumelu Advocates Massive Capital Investment for Africa

The Chairman, United Bank for Africa(UBA), and Founder, Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu has advocated massive private capital investment as well as increased support to youth development as catalysts for driving the much needed economic growth on the continent.

Elumelu said this while speaking on a panel at the UK-Africa Investment Summit 2020, in London. He stressed the need to invest in critical sectors of the economy such as electricity and human resources, noting that this will galvanise the continent, taking into consideration the huge population which Africa currently boasts of.

According to Elumelu, “Africa needs massive private capital investment to enable us drive the sectors that will develop the economy, especially sectors like power. Access to electricity is very critical if we are to develop our continent. We have a huge youth population in Africa and I think that is our biggest resource as a continent. So, in order to talk about the development of our continent, we must prioritise this segment and focus on how to empower them.

“Empowering the youths will help us create jobs and alleviate poverty and I think that this empowerment must start from creating an enabling environment, from making sure we have roads, mass transportation systems and most importantly, fixing the problem of shortage of electricity on the continent. If we do all of this, we will unleash the enormous potential that resides in Africa and in these young people.”

Through his foundation, the Tony Elumelu Foundation, (TEF), in the past 5 years, over 9,600 youths have been empowered across the continent with seed capital, mentoring and networking to grow their businesses and enable them contribute to economic development.

Throwing more light on what TEF has been able to achieve, he said, “During lunch, I interacted with some alumni of the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship programme who said they were beneficiaries of $5,000 support in 2015 from the TEF, and today, they have just completed raising U$3million becoming one of the biggest food chain providers in Rwanda. These are some examples of what such interventions can do. We support, give them an enabling environment, provide a platform and think of our prosperity in a sustainable fashion,” Elumelu explained.

Other speakers on the panel include the President of the World Bank Group, Mr. David Malpass; the Chief Executive Officer, Development Partners International, Ms Runa Alam; and the Group Chief Executive Officer, Vodafone Group, Mr Nick Read.

On his part, the World Bank President, Malpass, spoke of more focus on digital financial services, stating that investing in Africa will help to take the continent to another level, adding that there is need for more availability of electricity and good trade policies that will boost businesses on the continent.

The UK Africa Investment summit 2020 which was opened by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, for the first time ever, brought together African heads of states, business leaders and investors, to discuss future partnerships between the UK and African nations. Africa has many suitors he posited. ’The United Kingdom is who you should be doing business with. We have no divine right to this business, it is a competitive world but look at what the UK has to offer. We are the partner of choice, of today, tomorrow and decades to come’ said Johnson as he addressed the African presidents and business leaders.

The hall, to be named The Tony O. Elumelu multipurpose hall, is furnished with computers, desks and chairs, measures 839 square meters and has adjoining offices and conveniences.

Elumelu highlighted his motivation: “Education is crucial to Nigeria’s human capital – whether our young people join our national institutions, the private sector or, as I did, take the entrepreneurial path, no one can afford to be cut off from the digital world. It has been a personal mission to ensure that the hall was delivered to specification, for the benefit of the students at the AAU. Success brings with it the duty to give back, and I am just grateful that I am now in a position to meaningfully help the next generation”.

The multipurpose hall was formally handed over to the University, at a ceremony attended by members of the University’s governing council and staff, led by Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ignatius Onimawo.

Speaking at the commissioning, UBA’s Directorate Head, South Bank, Mr. Chris Ofikulu, who represented the UBA Group Chairman, highlighted the contribution of UBA, through its Foundation, to education and development across Africa.

‘As a pan-African bank, operating in 20 countries across our continent, UBA is committed to being a socially responsible institution, and a role model for businesses in Africa. We believe in intervening and building capacity within communities, facilitating projects that will act as catalysts for social and economic development’ he stated.

“Tony Elumelu is a product of this great university and is conscious of the need to give back and there is no substitute for world class educational infrastructure, and this is what has informed the construction of these facilities, that will help equip the future leaders of our great nation Nigeria.” he said.

The AAU Vice Chancellor, Prof Ignatius Onimawo, who expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the gesture by the UBA Group Chairman, noted that one of the most pressing needs of the University for 2020 had been met, and thanked UBA and Mr Elumelu.

He challenged students to make proper use of the facilities provided by UBA, and to ensure that they emerge great leaders and mentors like Elumelu, whose commitment to catalysing entrepreneurial growth across Africa, through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, and institutionalising African philanthropy, had created a strongly positive role model. ‘We at Ambrose Ali university are so proud of our son Tony Elumelu and every time we see him doing good across Africa, we feel joy and accomplishment’ said Onimawo.

  • 9th House minority leadership crisis: How lawmakers unknowingly sign for Elumelu faction

…as NASS gradually wears toga of a rubber stamp legislature

    … it’s laughable- Lawan
The minority leadership crisis rocking the House of Representatives is fast taking a larger than life shape as the Peoples Democratic party, PDP set up committee to probe the matter gradually dig deeper into how it all started.
It all started like a child’s play after the speaker of the House Hon Femi Gbajabiamila last week deliberately refused to honour PDP recognised list for the positions of minority principal officers on the floor of the House.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan had followed due process and diligently endorsed that of the Senate from the PDP.
But before the House drama a female Member of the PDP had invited the Zamfara lawmakers to come over to collect their money.
Innocently they went and collected a million naira each believing it was the vogue for new members only to discover that they were made to sign for the Elumelu led gang.
A lawmaker from the South South privy to this development told the TNG that”it was after the bubble bust on the floor of the House that the innocent lawmakers realised it was scam to endorse the Ndudi Elumelu faction.
“Out of anger, the lawmakers declared that the money would be returned to the female Member who told whoever cared to listen that she is in NASS strictly to make money.
“So many other lawmakers were involved in this scam that made us PDP Reps looked as if we were not organised.
” All members of the opposition parties held various meetings with us before suddenly Elumelu and co decided to disregard our party’s directive in active concert with the speaker.

Asked whether this money for position as emboldened by the ninth Assembly is not a sign of an expected rubber stamp legislature, the lawmaker said:
“The judiciary is already pocketed after the new six justices assume office that’s the end of that arm of government.
“The legislature is almost going same way if the minority now works with the ruling party as Nigerians may soon start experiencing once this statusquo remains.
“All over the world the opposition can never be on the same page with the ruling party because if foreign delegates visit Nigeria the norm is to see the ruling party and the opposition parties.
“But if both opposition and the ruling are on the same page then something must be pathologically wrong which must be addressed now or we’ll soon see democracy collapsing under our nose.
On the PDP committee probing alleged infractions of some members and suspension of some critical stakeholders in the minority positions imbroglio, the lawmaker noted that:
“Before anything meaningful can be done here, the PDP must resolve the matter by ensuring that all warring factions shield their swords.
“But instead they all chose to go and see the president today (Friday) when the committee has not concluded its probe on the matter.
“Like I said earlier, if this matter is not properly resolved the legislature will go the same way of the judiciary.
Another lawmaker from the South West geo-political zone also declared that as it is Elumelu is a Commander without a troop.
The lawmaker who pleaded for anonymity noted that” well if Elumelu continues he may earn the benefits of the office of the minority leader but he can never call a caucus meeting of the PDP.
“He is going to be a Commander without a troop and so shall the situation remain except if the committee resolves the matter amicably.
“The whole thing was a scan properly crafted and well executed by the speaker to work towards making Nigeria a one party state.
“We’ll continue to stand by our party till the last minute and until this abnormality is properly corrected.
Also reacting to a consistent cry by Nigerians that the Nigerian legislature was fast wearing a rubber stamp outlook, Senate President Ahmad Lawan described it as laughable.
Lawan, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa, made this known while addressing a group, Women Parliamentarians, led by Senator Joy Emordi on Thursday in Abuja.
He noted that, believing in President Muhammadu Buhari’ s vision and that of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and his personality should not be misconstrued to mean that he is not independent mind.
According to him, “during my campaign, I was called a potential rubber stamp Senate President to the executive; may be because I am close to the President, or because I believe in his cause.
“There is no time that I will ever be a rubber stamp. Yes, I believe in President Buhari as a person and I believe in my party, the APC, but I believe that our problems as Nigerians are Nigerian problems. They are neither APC nor PDP problems, they are Nigerian problems, that require Nigerian solution. So, we have to work together.”
“We will be there for the executive arm of government all the time in moving this country forward .
“We are going to challenge the executive in a manner that is decent but decisive. As a Minister, you have to do your ministerial job well. We will make government appointees to do what is required of them.
“We have to deal with the issues confronting us. It is not going to be easy, but we have to build a relationship that have mutual respect, collaboration and partnership. It is achievable,” Lawan noted.
“We are not here for self serving. We came here with a lot of experiences to impact positively in our country. We are here and we will remain focus to make this government work”.
The Senate President seized the occasion to charged women to be more involved in politics, saying, “the political space in the country is wide enough to accommodate our women, but the ball is in their court to take the advantages”.
In her remarks, Senator Joy Emordi congratulated the Presiding Officers and the leadership of the 9th Senate for what she described as smooth transition, urging them to use their expertise to better the lots of Nigerians.
Emordi said the group was formed to give support where necessary to serving women in the parliament, adding that, “it is our objective to promote cordial relationship between the executive and legislature, and remove the boundaries on women participation in politics for good governance”.
  • Minority Leadership: Elumelu reacts to suspension by PDP

Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndidi Elumelu on Friday expressed shock over his alleged suspension by the National Working Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over his emergence as the Minority Leader of the House.
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila had announced Elumelu as the Minority leader as against Hon Kingsley Chinda who was favoured by the National Working Committee (NWC), a development that did not go down well with the PDP who summoned Elumelu and his colleagues to appear before the party.
In suspending Elumelu and his colleagues, the PDP NWC hinged its decision on the alleged refusal of Elumelu, and other PDP lawmakers to appear before the committee on Friday morning at the Wadata House.
But in a statement made available on Friday, the Minority Leader said they got the invitation to appear before the party late on Thursday when they had travelled out of Abuja.
He said that out of the respect for the party, he instructed his Special Assistant to notify the party in writing, conveying their inability to honour the party’s invitation as directed and sought for another day to appear only for the party to hastily suspend them, in flagrant contravention of the principles of fair hearing. Hon Elumelu said he and his colleagues selected to lead the opposition parties in the House of Representatives didn’t contravene the laws regulating the selection of members into leadership positions and wondered why his party suspended them from the party they have strengthened over the years.
The Minority Leader noted that their selection as leaders by their colleagues of the minority parties was in strict compliance with Order 7, Rule 8 of the House of Representatives.
He said: “As loyal party members, we had thought that the PDP NWC would have availed us the opportunity of fair hearing, robust and constructive engagements before taking such drastic action on elected representatives who have over years, strengthened and protected the corporate interest of the party and Nigeria in general.
“We have become good ambassadors of the PDP and we don’t deserve this kind of treatment. Our alleged suspension negates the spirit and letter of fair hearing which is at the heart of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution and extant laws of the land.
“We love PDP and we are ready to meet with the party leadership as we have no other party to call our own than the PDP. We, therefore, call on the NWC to rescind its decision of suspending us, in the interest of the PDP, the National Assembly and Nigeria as a whole.”

  • Minority Leadership: PDP blasts Gbajabiamila, Summons Elumelu, Oke, Ikpeazu, others

National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned Ndudi Elumelu and six other members of the House of Representatives over the minority leadership tussle in the lower chamber.
Other members summoned were Wole Oke, Lynda Ikpeazu, Anayo Edwin, Gideon Gwadi, Toby Okechukwu and Adekoya Abdul-Majid.
In a statement issued by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, the party said the decision to summon the six lawmakers was taken by the NWC at its 473 meeting held on Thursday.
Ologbondiyan said that the lawmakers were to come on Friday for a crucial meeting at the party’s national secretariat, in Abuja.
“The summon is in line with the provisions of Chapter 10 (57) (3) of the Constitution of the PDP.
“The members are to appear before the members of the National Working Committee at 10: 00 a.m., the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) has said it would work with the party’s NWC to resolve the minority leadership crisis in the House of Representatives.
The BoT Chairman, Sen. Walid Jibrin, in a news conference on Thursday in Abuja, said the decision was necessary following the fracas on Wednesday, at the floor of the House over the selection of the PDP/Minority, principal officers.
“As a result of the fracas, the BoT and the NWC have decided to intervene immediately by forwarding the party’s list to the Speaker for urgent implementation.
“I want to assure all that the NWC and BoT will continue to work together in order to move the party forward. That is my statement,” Jibrin said.
He, however, did not entertain any question during the briefing.
