TNG Special: Obio/Akpor embassy in Abuja where constituents ‘smoke garri” on arrival from Rivers

    By Emma Ovuakporie

    …only Ikwerre music is played

…established 5years ago by Rep Kingsley Chinda for his constituents

    …guests also enjoy free transport

Obio/Akpor Embassy is located in the heart of Suncity Estate in Abuja, the Federal Capital city, arguably one of the biggest estates in Africa.

One of the amazing features of the embassy is the ‘smoking of garri’ by guests on arrival from Obio/Akpor constituency where Kingsley Chinda represents in the House of Representatives.

In a chat with TNG, Chinda tells the story of how the embassy came to being from his University days in Rivers State University.

    Hear him:

The Obio/Akpor embassy idea started way back as an undergraduate when I went into the Rivers state University, I discovered that no son or daughter of Ikwerre descent has been the president of the student union and I also saw that the Ikwerre students there were weak generally and I thought of what to do in order to sensitize and conscientize them.

So the first thing I decided to do even as a new student, a first year student was to set up what I call the Ikwerre embassy in the school, we got a banner, flew the banner in front of my room and went home to get a bag of garri knowing that students are always looking for garri to drink.

And so if you come to the Ikwerre embassy, we always give you free garri to drink and that attracted a lot of students coming to our room to get garri to drink and that popularized the room and also the Ikwerre embassy.

So anywhere on campus, if you are too hungry the next thing you hear is that I am going to Ikwerre embassy to smoke garri.

And we also played traditional Ikwerre music very early hours of the morning which we call eregbu, we will play that cassette and students will also be screaming and cursing and shouting, asking why are this Ikwerre people disturbing us, why won’t they allow us to sleep and all that.

But because they had that palliative of getting free garri from us nobody would want to attack, nobody would want to actually show any sign of strong enmity and so that helped to grow the Ikwerre student union in school.

Those who had issues knowing that there is an Ikwerre embassy, both girls and boys who had issues with accommodation or who had financial issues will always run to the embassy to tell us their problem and we struggle within our limits to solve them.

Now when I became a commissioner for environment in Rivers state I also had several calls from our people, some stranded in Lagos, Abuja that they don’t have money for accommodation, money for transport back home, either they came for visa application or for job interview and all that.

And those days the technology that we have now was not fully developed, so transfers were a little bit difficult. Where I wanted to assist, I had to either look for a friend who is in Lagos or Abuja to give money to such stranded persons to come back home.

So it occurred to me that perhaps the local government council can even build a hotel either in Lagos or Abuja, where some of our persons could have either subsidized or free accommodation, if they come for official purposes, not pleasure trips.

So when I had the opportunity to run for the house of Reps, I just made up my mind that one of the things I would do is to see how I can tackle accommodation to a reasonable extent for my constituents.

And so I assured that once we step our foot in the national assembly, that we are going to set up the Obia/Akpor embassy which will provide hospitality services for constituents that are coming for official purposes and that we would provide that for just three nights, so you have three nights free of charge a place to sleep, that will enable you carry out your business and go back home.

And to that we added a free transport scheme. So every month a bus leaves Abuja for Port Harcourt and takes people back.

  • Brazil follows U.S. lead, to move its embassy to Jerusalem

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Brazil’s President-elect Jair Bolsonaro told him that it was a matter of “when, not if” he moves his country’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

The far-right Bolsonaro, who takes office on Tuesday and is hosting Netanyahu and the leaders of other countries for his inauguration, has said he would like to follow the lead of U.S. President Donald Trump and move the embassy.

But he has come under intense pressure from Brazil’s powerful agriculture sector not to do so, as it could hurt Brazilian exports to Arab nations.

Such a move by Bolsonaro would be a sharp shift in Brazilian foreign policy, which has traditionally backed a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Arab League had told Bolsonaro that moving the embassy to Jerusalem would be a setback for relations with Arab countries, according to a letter seen by Reuters earlier in December.

“Bolsonaro told me it was “when, not if” he moves the embassy to Jerusalem,” Netanyahu said on Sunday during a meeting with leaders of Brazil’s Jewish community in Rio de Janeiro.

“We attach enormous importance to Brazil, and Brazil in the context of Latin America,” he added. “This heralds a historic change.”

Netanyahu, who met with Bolsonaro on Friday, said that the Brazilian accepted his invitation to visit Israel, a trip that is likely to take place in March.

Netanyahu is the first Israeli prime minister to visit Brazil.

After he met the Israeli leader, Bolsonaro said that “we need good allies, good friends, good brothers, like Benjamin Netanyahu.”

  • U.S. Embassy explains temporary suspension of consular services in Abuja

The U.S. Embassy Nigeria, says it has temporarily suspended its consular services in Abuja due to reasons beyond its control.

The embassy in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja maintained that its Consulate Office in Lagos was not affected by the development.

While expressing regret on the inconvenience the development might have caused to applicants, the embassy expressed hope to resume its operations soon in Abuja.

The embassy in its website earlier did not give reason for the suspension of its consular services in Abuja which it however latter did in a statement.

“Due to reasons beyond our control we are temporarily unable to provide regular services for visa and American Citizen Services (ACS) in Abuja, but other offices within the embassy remain open.

“Please note that consular functions at the U.S. Consulate Lagos are not affected and will continue.

”Until further notice, applicants are encouraged to contact the Consular Office in Lagos for immediate emergency travel,” the embassy stated.

The embassy advised applicants to please monitor the Facebook and Webpage of the U.S. Embassy for updates on consular operations.

It stated that scheduled visa and ACS applicants for Abuja would be contacted for rescheduling.

”American citizens in northern Nigeria with emergency services needs should continue to contact the after-hours emergency number for Abuja at 09461-4000 and press “0” to go to the operator to request assistance.

  • Pence says U.S. embassy move ‘tangible’ sign of Washington’s commitment to Israel

Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday said that the controversial decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is a “tangible” sign of Washington’s commitment to Israel.

Pence on the second and final day of his visit to Israel, made this known at a meeting with President Reuven Rivlin in Jerusalem.

He said:“President Donald Trump has directed our State Department, working with Ambassador [David] Friedman to complete the transition of moving our embassy here to Jerusalem by the end of 2019.

“We look forward to that as a tangible sign of our enduring commitment and alliance to the state of Israel and to the people of this great nation.”

Palestinian businesses closed on Tuesday in protest of Pence’s scheduled to visit the Western Wall, a Jewish holy site in East Jerusalem, and the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.

No Israeli officials will accompany Pence to the Western Wall, which is located in territory annexed by Israel and claimed by Palestinians for their future state.

A united front of all Palestinian factions called for the strike in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in response to Pence’s visit and Washington’s move to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Palestinian schools were also closed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, however, businesses in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip remained open.

Trump’s Dec. 6 Jerusalem declaration, which included a promise to move the U.S. embassy, upended decades of U.S. policy towards the divided holy city.

Palestinians saw the move as endorsing Israeli control of East Jerusalem, which they claim as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Israel occupied the eastern half of Jerusalem, now home to over 300,000 Palestinians, and later annexed the territory in a move that was not internationally recognised.

In a speech before the Israeli parliament on Monday, Pence expedited Trump’s promise to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying it would happen by the end of 2019.

His speech, full of biblical imagery and met with rousing applause from most Israeli lawmakers, was slammed by top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat as “messianic.”

  • Trump cancels UK visit, says will not unveil new U.S. embassy

U.S. President Donald Trump canceled a visit to London scheduled for early this year, saying he was disappointed with the “Obama administration having sold” the U.S. embassy in the British capital.

“(The) reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars,” Trump said in a tweet late on Thursday.

However, the embassy website showed that the decision to move the location was taken months before Barack Obama took office in January 2009.

The U.S. Embassy & Consulates in the UK said in October 2008 the embassy would be relocated for security reasons.

“Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!,” Trump said on Twitter.

The Daily Mail earlier reported the cancellation of Trump’s UK visit in which he was expected to inaugurate the new embassy.

The U.S. is leaving behind an imposing 1960 stone and concrete embassy in London’s upmarket Grosvenor Square, an area known as ‘Little America’ during World War Two, when the square also housed the military headquarters of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The new embassy on the South Bank is a veritable fortress set back at least 100 feet (30 meters) from surrounding buildings, mostly newly-erected high-rise residential blocks, and incorporating living quarters for the U.S. Marines permanently stationed inside.

The one billion-dollar-edifice, overlooking the River Thames, was wholly funded by the sale of other properties in London.

  • U.S. embassy unlikely to move to Jerusalem before 2020 – Tillerson

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. embassy in Israel was unlikely to be moved to Jerusalem before 2020, national media outlets reported.

“It’s not going to be anything that happens right away,” U.S. news daily the New York Times quoted Tillerson’s speech at the State Department.

“Probably no earlier than three years out, and that’s pretty ambitious,” the head of the State Department added.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Dec. 6 the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and his intention of moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The declaration serves “the interest of the United States and the peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” said Trump at a televised speech.

Speaking of the moving of the U.S. embassy, Trump said the State Department will immediately begin to hire architects and engineers, so as to make the new embassy “a magnificent tribute to peace” when completed.

Trump’s decision, which was seen as undermining the Middle East peace process and further destabilizing the region, has drawn condemnation and opposition globally.

  • BIAFRA: US Embassy, spokesman sued over comments on IPOB

The Embassy of the United States of America‎ (USA) in Nigeria and its Spokesman, Mr. Russel Brooks, have been dragged before a federal high court sitting in Abuja over the comments and the stand of the US government on the Indigenous People of Biafra, when it was proscribed by the Nigerian government last month.
‎The federal government last month secured an ordered of the court proscribing IPOB as a terrorist organisation.
But the US Embassy, through‎ its Spokesman said IPOB is not a terrorist organisation under US laws.
In the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/977/17, dated and filed 11th October,2017, the plaintiff, Nze Charles Ugwu, through his lawyer, Simon Kanshio, Esq.,‎ UGWU claimed that Nigerian laws are not inferior to laws of other countries and that the statement by the US Spokesman was to undermine the sovereignty of the Nigerian state which is anchored on its constitution.
He therefore, wants the court to compel the spokesman to withdraw his statement and declare the embassy as a promoter of terrorists activities in line with the Terrorism Act.
‎The plaintiff asked the court to determine the following questions:
*Whether by a true interpretation of Sections 1, 4 and 5 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the United Nations Convention on Terrorism the 1st Defendant’s statement endorsing the proscribed terrorist group named Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) does not amount to promoting terrorism in Nigeria?
*Whether the United States of America represented in Nigeria through the 2nd Defendant is no longer obligated to be bound by the United Nation Convention on Terrorism which the United States of America signed and ratified?
*Whether the 3rd Defendant as the Chief Law Officer of the Federation is not duty bound under the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 to advise President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR to declare the 1st Defendant a persona non grata for supporting the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a proscribed terrorist group, thereby promoting terrorism in Nigeria?
The plaintiff, in an affiidavit in support of the suit said Kanu and his fellow members of IPOB went about his so called freedom agitation in a violent manner which has led to killing of hundreds of persons and destruction of properties worth billions of naira within the last two years, thus necessitating the arrest of Kanu and some of his men.
He said Kanu, who is standing trial and is currently on bail breached all his bail conditions and went about his agitation in a manner that is capable of inciting genocide against Igbos in the Northern part of the Country.
“That I know as a fact that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu established his own Biafra National Guard (BNG) together with Biafra Secret Service (BSS) and was training men to raise arms against the Nigerian State.
“That I am know that recently the Nigerian Army had a clash with some boys trained by Mazi Kanu during the Operation Python Dance II, a routine operation which is usually carried out by the Nigerian Army, leading to the destruction of lives and properties.” He noted
  • Aisha Buhari refutes claims of VIP treatment from Embassy in UK, dares accusers to show proof

Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has refuted claims that she receives special treatment from Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom, UK anytime she visits the country with her entourage.

Recall that an online news medium (not TheNewsGuru.com) had reported on Thursday that the High Commission spends a minimum of £7,000 for hospitality on each of Mrs. Buhari’s trips to the United Kingdom.

The report claimed that some documents show that the sum of £14,100.80 was paid to a company, Savanna Construction Limited, for what was described as “call out report on 31 air-conditioning units in the High Commission building.”

But Aisha, in a statement signed by her S.A Media, Adebisi Olumide Ajayi, refuted the claims saying they were all lies and baseless accusations.

The statement reads in full: “The attention of the Wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari has been drawn to a report in Sahara Reporters where, she was amongst other things accused of abuse of privileges at Nigerian High Commission in London.

“It is not in her interest to join issues with anyone or defend others mentioned in the report, it is however paramount to put the record in proper perspectives as its concern her trips to UK vis-à-vis the Nigerian High Commission in London.

“Aisha Buhari has never traveled to London with a large entourage as was carried in the report. The highest number of people on a trip involves her three kids, ADC, and her personal physician.

“The Nigerian Commission in London has never offered any favor either monetarily or materially to her or her so called entourage on any of her trips to London.

“The state house in Abuja caters for her meal when necessary, and other healthy food or variety needed by her children are her personal responsibility. It is on record that the Nigerian Commission in London does not receive Aisha Buhari at the airport with any official distinction or privileges as was accorded other first ladies before her drivers are privately arranged without any recourse to the embassy for staff.

“She has never complained or raised dust about any of these acts by the High Commission because of the understanding, as clearly spelt out and practiced by her husband, that public office must be separated from the private lives of the occupants.

“She has always been an advocate of good governance where officials of government are responsive and appealing to their constituents, it therefore baffles the imagination that one could believe she would corroborate with any government official however highly placed either at home or abroad to shortchange the Nigerian people.

“These records are not hidden for a non-mischievous reporter who really intends to inform the people and not to disparage the family of the President just to add weight to a report.

“Aisha Buhari would have ignored this, like all of such baseless accusations, but the angle to which the report was presented has a corruption and abuse of privileges connotation which negates the fundamental principle upon which this administration thrives.

“Consequently, Sahara reporter or any of the embassy staff is hereby challenged to provide any concrete evidence either in hard or soft copy to contradict Aisha’s Buhari’s position as it concerns her trips to London.

“Sahara reporter should take the challenge and come out with the true version in relation to Aisha Buhari if not for her reputation and that of her family, but for the sake of good Nigerians who deserve to know the truth at all times,” the statement added.
