JUST IN: Embattled Emefiele challenges DSS detention in Court

The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday approached the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, challenging his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).

In his originating motion on notice, Emefiele is praying for the court to enforce his right to liberty and freedom of movement, as there is no basis for his continuous detention.

However, the Attorney General of the Federation as well as the DSS have insisted that the detention of the suspended CBN Governor is lawful.

In a preliminary objection filed against the fundamental rights enforcement suit instituted by Emefiele, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the DSS told the Federal Capital Territory High Court that the detention was backed by the order of a magistrates’ court and prayed for the court to dismiss the motion with cost.

They noted that the arrest of the former CBN governor was an administrative decision of the DSS.

The AGF is also challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit, as the originating motion filed by Mr. Emefiele ought to have sought that the court set aside the order for his detention rather than seek enforcement of rights.

The DSS, on its part, is also challenging the motion for bail filed by Mr Emefiele.

The case has been adjourned till July 13 for ruling.

Just In: Court orders DSS to grant Emefiele access to lawyers, family

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) and its Director General to immediately grant the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, unrestricted access to his lawyers and family members.

Emefiele was arrested by the DSS on Saturday, hours after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu on Friday evening.

The order came from Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting at Maitama Abuja on Friday, following an application by J.B. Daudu SAN, counsel to Emefiele.

He informed the court that he had written letters to the DSS, particularly on June 14, for the purpose of taking further instruction from him, but the DSS has refused to respond to the application.

On the other hand, counsel to the second and third respondents, I. Awo, told the court that the DSS did not have the penchant for refusing such a request and that it was wrong to do so.

However, he expressed certainty that the security service would abide by the order of court and grant access to the listed lawyers and family members of Emefiele to see him, while counsel to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation did not oppose the application.

In another development, counsel to the DSS, as well as the Office of the AGF, requested extension of time to file their respective responses to the originating motion, which was granted and the suit was further adjourned till Tuesday, June 19 for hearing of the substantive suit.

FFK in his tweet, wished that Emefiele’s “pathway be filled with sharp thorns, the horrors of the night and pain and may the Angel of the Lord pursue you along a dark and slippery path.

“May your story and end be a graphic example and instructive reminder to the evil and wicked that man is nothing before God, that earthly power is ephemeral and transient, that all power belongs to the Living God and that the Lord alone rules in the affairs of men and forges the destiny of nations”.

Let Nigerians hear from Emefiele, don’t lock him up – Omokri

Former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri has warned President Bola Tinubu against arresting the Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Omokri said Tinubu should allow Emefiele to defend himself of any allegation levelled against him.

He urged the president to allow Nigerians to listen to the former CBN gov before arresting him.

Tweeting, Omokri wrote: “Where is Godwin Emefiele? The Tinubu administration should not lock him up and begin to make public allegations against him. This is precisely what Buhari did to Jonathan administration officials as soon as he took over in 2015.

“They were locked up, and while incarcerated, allegations were made to turn the public against them, without giving them an opportunity to defend themselves.

“We had hoped those dark days were behind us. Question Emefiele and even accuse him, but let him have the chance to defend himself against these rumours and innuendo.

“Where is he? Under what legal order is he being held? Let Nigerians hear from him. Having begun so well, President Tinubu should not continue the draconian practices as his immediate predecessor. This is similar to what Abacha did, which drove even Tinubu to exile in 1994.”

CSO congratulates Emefiele over National Honour

…hails him for preparing ground for Tinubu’s govt economic stability

The Economic Assessment Unit of the Civil Society Central Coordinating Council has congratulated the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele on his Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic national honour conferred on him by the outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday.

Head of the Unit, Ihuoma Adaelu in a congratulatory statement described the CBN governor as a pragmatic and transformational leader, who has fearlessly encouraged innovations for economic development.

According to the group, Emefiele has created change that will shape the future of Nigeria’s economy and as well prepared ground President-elect Bola Tinubu government economic stability.

The group said, “This national honour of
Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic is well deserving, because Emefiele’s vision and mission over the years are in tandem with those of the apex bank. He has been focused, fearless even in the face of unwarranted and scathing criticisms. He never shied away from his duties nor allowed emotions to cloud his judgment.

“Under his leadership, The CBN has become one of the most efficient and effective world’s central banks in promoting and sustaining economic development. CBN has been on the spot since the recent policy on the redesign of the naira, but Emefiele has remained focused in the face of unwarranted criticisms, even by those who do not have a proper understanding of the modern concept of central banking. We commend the outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari for deeming Emefiele worthy of this award, it’s an honour well deserved.”

Netizens raise query against Emefiele’s nomination for national honour

Nigerians have queried the inclusion of the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emiefele, in the list of recipients of national honours.

A total of 339 persons were nominated on Sunday by the Federal Government to receive the awards.

Among those nominated for the category of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic is the CBN governor.

Surprised by the development, some Nigerians wondered how he made the list despite calls from different quarters demanding a probe into the failed new naira policy initiated under his leadership.

The outgoing Zamfara governor, Bello Matawalle, had called for the disapproval of Emefiele’s alleged request for study leave while accusing him of overseeing the mismanagement of the country’s financial and monetary systems.

He insisted that the CBN governor must stay to give an account of everything that happened under him to the incoming administration.

Just recently, Kogi lawmaker, Senator Smart Adeyemi, said he should be invited for questioning, while he recalled that the situation the new naira policy was greeted with could have degenerated into anarchy but for the prompt intervention of the judiciary.

Netizens on the micro-blogging website, Twitter, however, questioned the rationale behind his choice for the honour.

A user who goes by the handle, Onochie Anyaoku, wrote, “Imagine National Honours on Emefiele? There is no noble practice that Nigeria cannot Nigerianize?”

@eleyiLagos also wrote, “Emefiele that we will arrest after swearing-in. Asiwaju must collect back that honour. Buhari didn’t use merit to give those honours he has been sharing since January”.

Another user @TheYemiKing stated that “Godwin Emefiele has just been rewarded with CFR Award by President Muhammadu Buhari for overseeing the shambolic dehumanisation of Nigerians and destruction of the Nigerian economy, especially with his insipid cash confiscation policy.

A tweep @daemperor007 said, “Emefiele sef collect award. Miracle no dey tire Jesus?”
On her part, Sade wrote, “This Nation Honours List sha. I am sorry no beefing, but it’s a NO (for me). Seeing names like Emefiele’s on it nullifies it for me…though, some on the list are very dear to me. See no need for this hurriedly compiled list.”

Youths leaders, ACJHR hail Emefiele’s CFR National Award, say It’s evidence of hardwork

Ethnic Youth Leaders and African Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR), have congratulated the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele on his Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic national honour conferred on him by the outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday.

The groups in a joint statement signed by ACJHR strategic communication consultant, Chinomso Nduka Edede said, the conferment on Emefiele by Buhari is a sign of appreciation for his hardwork all these years.

According to the groups, Emefiele’s honor shows that the outgoing President appreciates competence, hard work by those who meant well for the economy of the nation.

The groups said, “We wish to sincerely commend President Muhammadu Buhari for the thoughtful decision to confer a national honor of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic on Emefiele. It is a fact that the President’s action is worthy of commendation and it is indeed important that when the right thing is done it is appreciated. Emefiele over the years has worked hard to reposition the apex bank. He understands that central banks in developing countries perform both traditional and non-traditional roles.

“From the onset of his tenure, he noted that the vision of the CBN draws inspiration from the understanding of the multiple mandates of the Bank to pursue both price and financial system stability as well as provide complementary developmental functions. Emefiele also understood that central banks in developing countries also needed to serve as financial catalysts by performing developmental and promotional activities, because developing countries do not have vibrant capital and money markets. He has never relented and has worked so hard particularly aggressive in development financing, especially in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors. We congratulate him on an honour well deserved.”

Emefiele implemented disastrous naira swap, don’t grant him ‘study leave’ – Matawalle warns Buhari

Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle has warned President Muhammadu Buhari not to approve any study leave or whatever kind of leave for any officer critical to the take-off of the incoming administration of Bola Tinubu.

The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, in a statement on Monday said Emefiele implemented the recent disastrous naira swap policy which put Nigerians into trauma.

“One of such persons that has been speculated in the media to have sought a study leave is Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

“If the leave has been approved, as reported in the media, the President should cancel it in the interest of peaceful transfer of power, accountability, and good governance.

“The CBN Governor, Emefiele, superintended over the management of the country’s financial and monetary systems. He is the one who initiated and implemented the recent disastrous naira swap policy, the naira confiscation program, which put Nigerians through untold woes and trauma and set our economy backwards.

“Two of my brother-governors and I took the Federal Government to court over this ill-advised policy and fought resolutely until we got a respite for our people from Emefiele and company. This same Emefiele now wants to proceed on study leave when he has some 10 months left of his tenure apparently in a bid to evade rendering accounts. This is unacceptable. President Buhari should not countenance this.  Emefiele must stay at his job to give full accounts of all that transpired under his watch to the incoming administration. He must answer all the questions the new regime may have for him particularly when he still has some months left of his tenure.”
