The incident, according to sources who spoke to Daily Trust from the palace, said it happened Friday night, around 11pm.

“It was the palace at Kofar Kudu. You know the palace has an entrance from inside while the main entrance is from the front (outside). The key was forced open and what was suspected was that they broke in, set the fire and locked the door.

“The throne, air conditioners and other valuables in the palace have been destroyed,” the source said.

When contacted the Public Relations Officer, Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abudullahi said the command was not aware of the incident as there was no call regarding the incident at any of the agency’scentres.

However, the Chief of Staff to the Emir, Munir Sanusi Bayero, Dan Buram Kano, in a statement confirmed the incident.

He said, “On Saturday, 13th July, 2024 morning, a fire incident occurred at the outer court of His Highness’s Palace, Kofar Kudu. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the damage was minimal.

“The palace is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the palace and its occupants. We are also investigating the cause of the fire and taking steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”

Emirship Tussle: Emir Sanusi meets district heads in Kano

There was wild  jubilation in Kano on Sunday when Muhammadu Sanusi, Emir of Kano, met with district heads in the state.

Emir Sanusi was crowded with people in joyous mood as soon as he ventured outside the main palace on Sunday.

He rode on a royal horse and gesticulated at the crowd who responded with: “You’re the only Emir we know.”

He also met with some district heads, council members, vigilantes, women groups and well wishers who were at the palace to pay homage.

It would be recalled that the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, made a comeback as Emir on Thursday after Abba Yusuf, Governor of Kano, signed the new Kano Emirate Council Law.

The law repealed the 2019 version, which balkanized the Kano emirate into five jurisdictions and was relied upon to depose Sanusi as Emir in 2020.

Despite Sanusi’s reinstatement, some Kano residents are still pledging fealty to Aminu Bayero, the deposed Emir.

The ruling All Progressive Congress at the center has been told not to interfere in the Emirship tussle in the state in order to escalate it.

  • I don’t think God has taken anything away from me – Deposed Emir Sanusi

I don’t think God has taken anything away from me – Deposed Emir Sanusi

Deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, says he will be ungrateful to God if he expresses regret over his removal as emir and he has no regret in spite of the positions he occupied in life.

Sanusi, who is also the current Khalifah, Tijaniyat Movement of Nigeria, said this in Abuja on Saturday at a stage play titled “Emir Sanusi: Truth in Time.’’

The play was written by Prof. Ahmed Yerima, a professor of Drama at the Redeemer University and produced by Executive Chairman, Duke of Somolu Productions, Mr Joseph Edgar.

He said he served as Chief Risk Officer at the United Bank for Africa, and at First Bank, and also as CBN governor; as Emir of Kano for six years and Khalifah, Tijaniyat Movement of Nigeria.

“I don’t think that God has taken anything away from me. So, I have no regret.

“I turned 61 years last year and in those years, I had the honour of having been the Chief Risk Officer at United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the Chief Risk Officer at First Bank.

“I was Governor of Central Bank, Emir of Kano and now Khalifah, Tijaniyat Movement of Nigeria.

“If I have sadness, then I’m ungrateful. How many people have had the opportunity to be just one of those things?’’ he observed.

Sanusi added that many traditional rulers held leadership positions such as army generals, governors, Nigeria Customs chief and others before their appointment as traditional rulers.

According to him, these traditional rulers gave their bits to serve this country.

“We have a long history of service to this country. My father as first Director-General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency set up the agency in1960, the record is there to see.

“My parents, grandparents and great grandparents gave their lives to build this country.

“We will continue to devote energy to build this country. It doesn’t belong to anyone; it belongs to all of us,’’ Emir Sanusi stressed.

He said if he had a choice between sacrificing his principles and holding on to position, he would give up the position.

“History is always the best judge. The things that I said would happen, that caused me so much trouble, have happened.

“For me, I have absolutely no regret and I will continue to speak and voice my views. I will continue to defend this country,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the playwright, Yerima said what motivated him to write the play was when Lamido was appointed as Emir, he prayed: “O Allah, let me die on the throne.’’

He said he wanted people to watch how destiny prevailed on Sanusi’s grandfather, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi who spent 10 years before he was removed, and Sanusi, the grandson who spent six years before he was also removed.

“Also, they lived and live in a society. So, we want viewers to see the society’s attitudes towards their service to humanity,’’ he said.

The producer of the play, Edgar said it was the 14th edition produced by Duke of Somolu Productions.

“With a budget in excess of N40 million, this production is truly historical,’’ he said.

Edgar thanked the more than 35 sponsors of the play who took over 50 per cent of the budget for their support.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was dethroned as Emir of Kano in March 2020 by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, citing “total disrespect to lawful instructions from the Office of the Governor’’.

  • JUSUN strike stalls deposed Emir Sanusi’s suit against Kano Govt

JUSUN strike stalls deposed Emir Sanusi’s suit against Kano Govt

A suit filed by deposed Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, against the Kano State government and others was Thursday stalled due to the strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deposed emir had, on March 12, 2020, sued the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police and Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS) over what he called “unlawful detention/confinement” at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Also joined in the motion with suit number: FHC/ABJ/CS/357/2020 are the Attorney-General of Kano State and Attorney General of the Federation as 3rd and 4th respondents respectively.

The former emir had, in a motion -ex-parte dated March 12 by his team of lawyers, sought an interim order of the court releasing him from the detention and/or confinement of the respondents and restoring his right to human dignity, personal liberty.

NAN reports that Sanusi, after his banishment from Kano, was confined to Awe town, Nasarawa State.
The presiding judge, Justice Anwuli Chikere, however. ordered his immediate release.

Although the deposed emir had since been released after the court ruling, the case is still in court as the originating motion was yet to be determined by the court.

On March 31, the matter could not come up and the case was therefore fixed for June 3.

But the industrial action embarked upon by the judiciary workers nationwide to demand for financial autonomy for the judiciary hindered its hearing.

NAN reports that JUSUN on April 6 directed its members to shut down all courts across the country.

NAN reports that a verdict of the Federal High Court in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, had in January 2014 held that financial autonomy for the judiciary is a constitutional provision that must be complied with by the executive branch of government.

NAN reports that on May 23, President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law the Executive Order to grant financial autonomy to the legislature and the judiciary across the 36 states of the country.

The order also mandates the Accountant-General of the Federation to deduct from source amount due to state legislatures and judiciaries from the monthly allocation to each state for states that refuse to grant such autonomy.

The Attorney General of the Federation Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, said Executive Order No. 10 of 2020 made it mandatory that all states of the federation should include the allocations of both the legislature and the judiciary in the first-line charge of their budgets.

According to the AGF: “A Presidential Implementation Committee was constituted to fashion out strategies and modalities for the implementation of financial autonomy for the State Legislature and State Judiciary in compliance with section 121(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Amended).”

NAN reports that the Nigeria Governors Forum said it will start implementing financial autonomy for the judiciary latest by May ending, a pledge that indicated that an end to the ongoing strike that has crippled the nation’s judiciary may be in sight.

The governors also called on striking members of the JUSUN to call off their two weeks old strike then.

The Chairman of the NGF, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, gave this assurance in an interview with journalists after meeting with “stakeholders” from the state judiciary and legislature at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Fayemi said the modalities for the implementation were worked out at the meeting held at the Presidential Villa.

According to him, the meeting, chaired by the Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, was attended by the Solicitor-General of the Federation, representatives of the judiciary, Conference of Speakers and House of Representatives.

The first line charge status, which is being respected by the Federal Government in respect of the federal judiciary, entitles the state judiciaries to get funds due to them directly from the Federation Account.

Alleged N2.2bn land scam: Court approves probe of deposed Emir Sanusi

A Federal High Court has approved the investigation of deposed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II over an alleged N2.2 billion land scam.

Justice Lewis Allagoa on Tuesday dismissed the fundamental human right suit filed by the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor against Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, its chairman as well as the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice.

Sanusi will face fresh anti-corruption charges three months after his deposition after he resigned for about six years.

He asked the court to restrict the four defendants from investigating him on the alleged land racketeering, arguing the planned investigation was against his fundamental human right.

But the judge held that the anti-graft commission and its chairman had the jurisdiction and powers to probe Sanusi on the matter.

Justice Lewis had in March granted an ex parte order filed by Sanusi to restrict the commission from inviting and investigating him on the land matter pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons.

The anti-graft agency had invested on the embattled Sanusi a Right of Occupancy CON-RES-2016-503, which was reportedly sold illegally by the Kano emirate council to Family Home Fund Limited at the instance of Sanusi as the Emir.

The commission claimed all the alleged illegal transactions for the sale of the landed properties at Darmanawa, Hotoro and Bubbugaje belonging to the emirate was done by the trio of Shehu Dankadai (Sarkin Shanu), Sarki Ibrahim (Makanan Kano) and Mustapha Yahaya (Dan Isan Lapai) based on the alleged instruction of Sanusi.

The issue of the land racketeering suit came up again after the same High Court dismissed allegation of misappropriation of about N4.5 billion against the deposed emir.

  • Peterside shuns CBN Roundtable over Emir Sanusi’s dethronement

The founder of Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc., Mr. Atedo Peterside, has turned down an invitation by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to participate in a consultative roundtable with the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, following the banishment of the dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, from Kano emirate by the state government.

Specifically, the investment and banking expert, who is currently out of the country and attended the Commonwealth Service that held in Westminster Abbey in London yesterday, linked his refusal to attend the roundtable partly to “the monumental events that took place yesterday (Monday) viz the removal of the Emir of Kano from office and the release of information that purportedly seeks to exile him and restrict his movements or confine them to a little known enclave in Nassarawa State.”

In the letter to the CBN Governor titled “CBN Consultative Roundtable: A Conscientious Objection” Peterside said “I have decided to stay away from your Consultative Roundtable and to instead use the opportunity of this letter to draw the attention of a wider audience to my displeasure with the events of yesterday.

Please forgive me because I am in no mood to immediately pretend as if all is well by proceeding with business as usual.”

Peterside, however, offered to share his thoughts in the near future, promising that at an appropriate time he will send his “thoughts on how to quickly eliminate the policy inconsistencies that threaten the stability of our macroeconomy as CBN continues to seek to defy the odds by simultaneously pursuing a low domestic interest rate regime which clearly cannot coexist with high inflation and naira exchange rate stability in the face of collapsed/collapsing oil prices.

During the service which he described as a colourful ceremony which featured speeches by a variety of personalities, including Anthony Joshua, the Nigerian-British heavyweight boxing champion, Mr Peterside recalled that Joshua and other speakers “reminded us eloquently about what can go right when we embrace the forces of modernity whilst recognising and upholding our proud cultural heritage.”

  • BREAKING: Dethroned Kano Emir, Sanusi heads to court vows to challenge Ganduje

Dethroned Kano Emir Muhammad Sanusi II has vowed to challenge his dethronement and banishment in court.

His lawyer, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), declared this in a briefing few minutes ago in Abuja.

He said the restriction of the Emir’s movement and his dethronement were unlawful and gross violation of his human rights. [Details soon]

Similarly, Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has vowed to launch a legal offensive to nullify the banishment of Sanusi II by the Governor of the State, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The Nigerian opposition coalition said it received the news of the illegal and arbitrary dethronement and purported banishment of Sanusi II by the All Progressives Congress, APC led Government of Umar Abdullahi Ganduje with shock.

CUPP, in a statement on Tuesday, signed by its National Spokesman, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, described the dethronement and banishment which it alleged had the tacit support of the APC led Federal Government, as barbaric, illegal, unconstitutional and a grave assault against constitutional democracy and the fundamental rights guaranteed under Sections 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 43 of the 1999 Constitution as amended and a bold move to desecrate an ancient revered traditional institution.

The political parties noted that the sacked Emir was not given the right to be heard, adding that this renders the action of the Kano State Executive Council illegal, arbitrary, unconstitutional and null and void.

“The banishment is a barbaric and mundane assault on Emir Sanusi’s human rights as a Nigerian citizen provided under Sections 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 43 of the 1999 Constitution as amended,” CUPP added.

“His right to dignity of the human person, right to personal liberty, right to a fair hearing, right to freedom of thought and conscience, right to freedom of expression, right to peaceful assembly and association, right to freedom of movement and right to own immovable property anywhere in Nigeria were all flagrantly violated by the Kano State Government and cannot be condoned in a democracy. Such a nonsensical act of banishment is autocratic, dictatorial and in direct conflict with the constitution and must be resisted.”

According to CUPP, no Governor or President has the right to banish a Nigerian citizen or forcefully move him to any location in violation of the right of movement, right to life and a multitude of other rights except by an order of the court.

The parties said that as an opposition, they will not dabble into traditional issues but when Government actions tend to assault the laws of the land and intimidate citizens for speaking out, they must at all times rise to say no.

“The ancient ecclesiastical punishment of banishment and deportation cannot stand in a democracy. This much has been held by the Court of Appeal in the locus Classicus case of Government of Kebbi State vs. HRH Mustapha Jokolo(2013) LPER where the Appellate court condemned and declared that banishment and deportation of a deposed king is unconstitutional,” CUPP added.

  • Eedris AbdulKareem mocks dethroned Emir Sanusi

Nigerian singer Eedris Abdul Kareem mocked the dethroned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, claiming that the former emir’s fate was payback for his previous sins.

According to Eedris, the former Emir championed the ”Jonathan is Corrupt” cause without providing substantial evidence or proof that the ex-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was indeed corrupt.

On his Instagram page, he posted a photo of the dethroned Emir with an open message as a caption.

He wrote; ”Dear Sanusi Lamido, a corrupt man caught stuffing dollars into his babariga removed you from office! It’s an unfortunate situation but this is the price you have to pay for championing the Jonathan is Corrupt cause with no evidence but propaganda.

Today, you are witnessing the real corruption! Good luck!”
