  • North destroying itself, end to quota system inevitable – Emir Sanusi

North destroying itself, end to quota system inevitable – Emir Sanusi

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, says the north will “destroy itself if it doesn’t change”.

The emir spoke on Monday at the Kaduna state government house during a programme to commemorate the 60th birthday celebration of Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna.

Sanusi said as a leader, repeating the same thing and expecting a different result shows that something is wrong.

He noted that the real change can only occur in the north through those who do things differently.

He commended el-Rufai’s reforms in the education sector, noting that what the governor is doing in the sector is what will save the north.

“It is almost correct now to say that, if you are seen as normal, if you are a governor in the north or a leader in the north, and you are seen as normal in the sense that you continue to do what your predecessors have been doing, doing the same thing, which has been normalised, then, there is something wrong with you. You are part of the problem, ” Sanusi said.

“The real change in the north will come from those who are considered mad people, because you look around and say if this is the way we have been doing things, and this is where we have ended up, maybe we need to do things differently.

“If the north does not change, the north will destroy itself. The country is moving on… If we don’t listen, there would be a day when there would be a constitutional amendment that addresses these issues of quota system and federal character.

“The rest of the country cannot be investing, educating its children, producing graduates and then they watch us, they can’t get jobs because they come from the wrong state, when we have not invested in the future of our own children.”

The emir said no northern leader can afford to be happy in the midst of problems facing the region.

“Nobody who is a leader in northern Nigeria today can afford to be happy,” Sanusi said.

“You cannot be happy about 87 percent of poverty in Nigeria being in the north. You can’t be happy with millions of northern out-of-school children. You can’t be happy with nine states in the north contributing almost 50 percent of the entire malnutrition burden in the country.

“You can’t be happy with the Boko Haram problem. You can’t be happy with all the issues.

“So, we wish Nasir a happy birthday, but we do not want him to be happy as a leader. Because you are happy when you think you have reached a state of delivering and taking your people to where you want them to be.”

He also said el-Rufai should be celebrated as a public officer who is addressing the core problems of his constituency.

“If you look at what Nasir is doing in Kaduna, with 40 percent of his budget in education, that is the only thing that is going to safe the north. I know that, when we say these things, they don’t go down well,” he said.

  • Emir Sanusi’s influence threatened as Kano Assembly finally passes Ganduje’s Emirate Council Bill

The Kano state house of assembly has approved the 2019 Emirate council Bill.

The speaker of the house Alhaji Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa announced the Approval during the house plenary held in Kano on Thursday.

The new bill has approved four additional Emirates council in the state which includes Bichi, Gaya, Rani and Karaye.

The bill scaled through first, second and third readings before it was finally adopted by members of the assembly.

However, last Wednesday, the state House of Assembly was engulfed in a rowdy session over Governor Ganduje’s reactivated Emirate council Bill where members were sharply divided.

Recall that a Kano High Court, presided by Justice Usman Nabba, had nullified the new emirates and consequently restrained the governor, the House of Assembly, their servants, agents and proxies from giving effect to or from continuing to give effect to the (Appointment and Deposition Law) 2019.

In its judgement, the court held that the purported proceedings or discussions taken by the Kano State House of Assembly in respect of the law violated its own rule, adding that the legislators failed to comply with Order II, Rule 3 of Kano State House of Assembly.

Justice Na’Abba pointed out that the Kano State House of Assembly violated section 101 of the Nigerian Constitution which gives the assembly the power to enact its rules and guidelines of proceedings.

The bill is expected to be ascent by governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje soon for immediate action.

Meanwhile, overzealous security operatives attached to the Kano state House of Assembly harassed and threatened to shoot some newsmen, who had come to cover proceedings on Kano Emirate council Bill.

Despite identifying ourselves, the security men remained adamant insisting that they would not allow us entrance into the premises over undisclosed reasons.

However, the timely intervention of the Assembly,Director of Press, Malam Ali Bala saved the situation.

Emir Sanusi attacks FG: Nigeria bankrupt, number of people living with poverty frightening

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi 11 has declared the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s economic policies as unfavourable, adding that Nigeria is on the threshold of bankruptcy.

He identified the bad economic policies of the Buhari administration to include subsidizing petroleum products, electricity tariffs and using 70 percent of the country’s revenue to service debt.

Emir Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), made these revelations at the ongoing 3rd National Treasury Workshop organized by the office of the Accountant General of the Federation at Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

He advised Buhari to cancel subsidy in petroleum subsidy and electricity tariffs if the economy must stabilize.

“The country is Bankrupt and we are heading to bankruptcy. What happened is that the Federal Government do pay petroleum subsidy, pay electricity tariff subsidy, and if there is rise in interest rates, Federal Government pays.

“What is more life-threatening than subsidy that we have to sacrifice education, health sector and infrastructure for us to have cheap petroleum.

“If truly President Buhari is fighting poverty, he should remove the risk on the national financial sector and stop the subsidy regime which is fraudulent.”

He challenged President Buhari to tell Nigerians the fact about the economic situation and also act quickly on it because the nation is already bankrupt.

“Since I have decided to come here, you have to accept what I have said here. And please, if you do not want to hear the truth, never invite me.

“So let us talk about the state of public finance in Nigeria. We have a number of very difficult decisions that we must make, and we should face the reality. His Excellency, the President said in his inaugural speech that his government would like to lift 100 million people out of poverty, it was a speech that was well received not only in this country, but world-wide.

“The number of people living with poverty in Nigeria are frightening. By 2050, 85 percent of those living in extreme poverty in the world will be from the African continent. And Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo will take the lead.

“Two days ago, I read that the percentage of government revenue going to debt services has risen to 70 percent.

”These numbers are not lying. They are public numbers. I read them in the newspapers. When you are spending 70 percent of your revenue on debt services, then you are managing 30 percent.

“And then, you continue subsidizing petroleum products; and spending N1.5 trillion per annum on petroleum subsidy! And then we are subsidizing electricity tariff. And maybe, you have to borrow from the capital market or the Central Bank of Nigeria to service the shortfall in the electricity tariff, where is the money to pay salaries, where is the money for education, where are other government projects.

Sanusi lamented that for 30 years, successive governments have had this project called petroleum subsidy, insisting that this is the right time to stop it so as to save the nation’s economy.
