“Therefore, we are calling on members of the public to know that the Police in the State is working together with the military and other security agencies and are with full capacity for providing the adequate security to everyone as we are committed to carrying out our statutory duties as provided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Therefore, as the Police Command is leading other security agencies to sustain the peace and peaceful coexistence for overriding interests, miscreants should stay clear of violence in all its ramifications and should not take advantage or hijack the current situation to launch unprovoked attack on people, property and infrastructure of the State. Any person found with such a tendency will be ruthlessly dealt with according to the law of the land.”

Kano Emir, others condemn kidnapping, selling of northern minors

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has condemned the trend of kidnapping and selling children, mostly northern minors, to southern parts of the country.

The Emir expressed his concern on Saturday in Kano while addressing newsmen.

Represented by Dan Malikin Kano, Amb. Ahmad Umar, the first class traditional ruler said the Emirate would no longer condone abduction and trading of children in the state.

He said the issue has gotten out of hand that proactive action must be taken to curb it.

“This ugly trend must stop. We have to rise up against it. We will no longer condone a situation whereby our children are kidnapped, sold and their tribe and religion were changed.

“This illicit act must stop. We have to rise up to check the situation as it is going out of hand. The situation cannot stop itself, it is we that will make it stop. It happened few years ago and now it has happened again. Only God knows how many of our children had been kidnapped and sold,” he said.

The kano state Police Command on Dec. 27, 2023, said it had dismantled a human trafficking syndicate that specialised in abduction, buying and selling of minors.

The command added that nine suspects had been arrested from the syndicate, which was operating around Kano, Bauchi, Lagos, Delta, Anambra and Imo States.
It also rescued seven children, majority from Bauchi state, from the suspects.

He said the emirate had expressed great disappointment over the abduction of minors.
Describing the situation as disturbing, he called for punishment on the perpetrators to serve as a lesson to others.

The royal member noted that Kano had been accommodating visitors for hundreds of years, emphasising that the visitors should not take the advantage of the hospitality received by the state to commit crimes.
“Kano, for hundreds of years has been welcoming visitors and take them as its sons. Recently we have seen a disturbing and unfortunate incident of rescuing children trafficked to Lagos through Kano.
“The Emir expressed serious disappointment of Kano and northern Nigeria about the incident and wants to see a lasting solution to the problem,” he said.

In his remarks, the leader of Igbo community in Kano, Eze Ndigbo, Boniface Igbekwe, alao condemned the act and called on authorities to bring the perpetrators to book.
Represented by Prime Minister of the Igbo Community, Chief Nwaimo Efanyi, he said the Igbo community had received the news of the kidnapped children rescued by the police with shock and disbelief.

He said the entire Igbo community in Kano had dissociated themselves from the suspects and any kind of heinous acts committed in their name, stressing that they are always committed to live peacefully with one another.

“We condemned the act in its entirety in whatever guise and call for punishment on the perpetrators. We Igbo dissociate ourselves from this criminality. We call for peace with one another,” he stated.

The Eze Ndigbo commended the Kano Police command for dismantling the syndicate and rescue of the victims, urging it not to rest on its resolve until all kidnapped children were rescued.

Speaking earlier, the state Chairman of the ACF, Dr Goni Faruk Umar, lauded the political commitment demonstrated by Gov. Abba Yusuf and the Police Commissioner, Mr Hussaini Gumel, for their commitment and support to the victims and their parents.

“Our call is to Police to double up their efforts in searching and bursting these criminal gangs.

” We really commend the police for this breakthrough. We thank them immensely.
“Our call is also to the judiciary. They should fear God. At times these suspects would be charged to court by police but later on you see them released and moving freely.

“We therefore call on the judiciary to be diligent and ensure the perpetrators face the wrath of the law.
“To legislators, we urge you to make robust legislation against this act of kidnapping and abduction of people. All hands must be on deck to check this ugly trend,” he said.

  • Tinubu mourns late Kuwait Emir, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah

Tinubu mourns late Kuwait Emir, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah

Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday sympathised with the ruling Sabah family, the government, and people of the State of Kuwait after the announcement of the  passing of the Emir, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

The special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale made this known via a statement released by him on Saturday in Abuja.

Tinubu while applauding the achievements of the late Emir in such a short time, described the him as a man of great compassion, peace, and mercy, who granted amnesty to political prisoners and dissidents, fashioning a progressive and stable state.

Tinubu also commiserated with the ruling House of Sabah, and all those who mourned the painful loss.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to show the Emir mercy and grant him a place in Aljannah Firdaus.

Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah died on Saturday at the age of 86.

Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah al-Sabah, the minister of his emiri court, made the announcement in a statement aired on state television on Saturday.

  • SAD! Kuwait Emir Sheikh Nawaf is dead

SAD! Kuwait Emir Sheikh Nawaf is dead

The ruling emir of oil-rich Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, died on Saturday aged 86, the royal court said, after three years in power marked by repeated political disputes.

With great sadness and sorrow, we mourn… the death of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait,” said a statement aired on state television.

The channel had cut its regular programming and switched to a broadcast of a Koranic recital before the announcement.

In November, Sheikh Nawaf was hospitalised “due to an emergency health problem”, according to the official KUNA news agency. It did not provide details about his illness, but he was later declared to be in stable condition.

Given his age, concerns about his health were commonplace during his rule.

Sheikh Nawaf ascended to the role of crown prince in 2006, appointed by his half-brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. He assumed the position of emir upon Sheikh Sabah’s death in September 2020 at the age of 91.

In 2020, Sheikh Nawaf faced the challenge of navigating the economy through a crisis triggered by a fall in oil prices.

The current crown prince, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, another half-brother, is 83 years old. Attention is now focused on whether the family will appoint a younger generation ruler.

Around 14 months after he was appointed emir, Sheikh Nawaf transferred key constitutional duties to Sheikh Mishal.

    ‘Emir of pardons’
Sheikh Nawaf’s reign, though not the shortest in Kuwait’s history, was notable for issuing numerous amnesties, earning him the title “emir of pardons”, according to Bader al-Saif, an assistant professor of history at Kuwait University.

Last month, Kuwait’s Council of Ministers approved a draft royal decree calling for pardons for political prisoners convicted during the past decade. Similar pardons were also issued in 2021.

Sheikh Nawaf would also “be remembered for his unique personal attributes: soft spoken, devout, modest, low profile”, Saif said.

Kuwait, a conservative country where sovereign powers are concentrated in the hands of the ruling Al Sabah family, is home to the most active and powerful parliament in the Gulf.

But repeated standoffs between elected lawmakers and cabinet ministers installed by the ruling family have hindered development efforts and discouraged investors.

Following a succession of resigning governments and dissolved parliaments, Kuwait’s current cabinet is its fifth in a year.

Sheikh Nawaf’s rule also saw the Gulf country hold three parliamentary elections in as many years.

The political deadlock has delayed necessary reforms and blocked development projects, leaving infrastructure and education in disrepair and much of the population disgruntled.

Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was the fifth son of Kuwait’s late ruler from 1921 to 1950 Sheikh Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

He started his political career at the age of 25 as governor of Hawalli province, remaining in the position until 1978 when he began a decade-long tenure as interior minister.
