Notorious bandit, Ado Aleiro, was turbaned as the Sarkin Fulani in Yantodo Emirate of Zamfara State and his turbaning has been causing uproar in many quarters but he has come out to say he did not request the title, rather that the Emir gave him the title with a reason.

Aleiro who was recently turbaned as Sarkin Fulani (Chief of Fulani) of Yandoto Emirate by the Emir of the Emirate, Aliyu Marafa.

Yandoton Daji is one of the two newly created emirates by the Zamfara government in May.

The turbaning ceremony was held at the palace of the suspended Emir and was attended by the council chairman of Tsafe Local Government and the state Commissioner of Security and Home Affairs, DIG Ibrahim Mamman Tsafe (rtd).

The bandit leader was the arrowhead of a deadly raid on Kadisau, a community in the Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, where about 52 people were killed.

He was declared wanted by the Katsina Police Command in 2019 with a bounty of N5 million put on his head.

Reports have it that in a recent interview in Hausa, the terrorist said, “Honestly I didn’t solicit for the title, I was summoned by the Emirate which initially I rejected.

“After consultations with our leaders over the development, they suggested that I shouldn’t turn down the offer since the new emir insisted it had to happen in his emirate; that was how I accepted it.”

Matawalle bars Emirs from conferring traditional titles

Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has barred all traditional rulers in the state from conferring traditional titles without government clearance.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by Malam Zailani Bappa, the governor’s Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications.

“All Emirs, Senior District Heads and District Heads in the state are hereby directed to officially seek permission from the State Government before conferring traditional titles to anyone,” Matawalle was quoted as saying in the statement.

He said the directive became necessary to check indiscriminate awards and possible abuse of the traditional institution.

“Henceforth, no Emir, Senior District Head, or District Head must appoint anybody into any traditional office without securing official permission and clearance from the state government.

“Compliance to this directive is now mandatory and failure to abide by it will attract serious reprimand from the state government,” he warned.

The directive came after Emir of ‘Yandoto, Alhaji Aliyu Garba-Marafa, conferred the traditional title of Sarkin Fulani on a wanted bandit, Ado Aleiru.

The appointment generated backlash, with the government suspending the emir and constituting a committee to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara, told journalists that though traditional rulers were given the mandate to appoint title holders, the case of Aleru was different.

“The emir ought to have written to government seeking for approval through the governor who will forward the request to State Security Council who will screen to look at the pros and cons.

“None of these were done. It is after the recommendation of the Security Council that the State Executive Council will also have to ratify the recommendation.

“But like I said, this has not  been done that is why the state government felt there was need to suspend the emir,” Dosara said.

According to him, the six-man committee investigating the suspended emir has been working and will soon submit its report.

He said that Zamfara government has no objection if communities reconcile to restore peace, “but there are limitations”.

The commissioner said that local negotiation for peace with the bandits have been going on in places like Dansadau, Kaura Namoda and Zurmi.

“The report government is getting is that there is relative peace there as farmers have gone back to farming.

“In Zurmi Local Government Area for instance, with the peace between repentant bandits and the community, the people are farming together without intimidation or fear.

”So, government has no problem with the localisation of the negotiation, and that is what is going on.

“All we are praying for is that, let this be the root cause of having lasting peace in Zamfara,” he said.

“It also approved the removal of Alhaji Suleiman Ibrahim, District Head of Birnin Tsaba, in Zurmi Local Government Area,’’ the commissioner said.

He added that the government’s decision followed the indictment of the traditional rulers and the community leader by two committees set up to investigate them.

Zamfara suspended the three culprits from office in June 2021.

It set up the two committees to investigate them following their alleged involvement in banditry and land racketeering in their respective domains.

The committees headed by a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police and Commissioner for Security, Alhaji Mamman Tsafe, submitted their findings to the state government earlier.

The Council upheld the outcome of the White paper and dethroned the two emirs and the district head.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Command, has arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly defrauded the Emir of Okuta in Kwara of N33, 399, 999.

Alhaji Idris Abubakar, the Emir of Okuta in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara, was a former member of the House of Representatives

A statement signed by the Spokesman of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, made available to journalists on Monday in Ilorin, said that that the suspect, a native of Stwue in Konshisha LGA of Benue conspired with others at large to defraud the Emir.

Uwujaren said that the suspect deceived the traditional ruler into believing that he had a container of goods meant to be used for the development of the community.

He said that the container needed to be cleared at Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.

“In a petition dated November 30, 2021, the Emir alleged that a group of fraudsters, who operate as syndicate called him on phone sometime in 2020 that they had a container to clear in Abuja.

“The caller requested for the said amount of money to clear his container at the airport.

“He provided different accounts for the Emir to pay the money into, one of which included that of Fidelis Poor,” he said.

Uwujaren said that the people later called the Emir and directed him to call one Evangelist Rose Marry Oni (JP) for handing over of the container.

He said that all efforts made by the Emir to collect the goods or get his money back had proved futile.

“The Commission upon the receipt of the petition commenced discrete investigation into the matter, which led to the suspect’s arrest,” he said.

Uwujaren said that the suspect would be arraigned at the conclusion of investigations, adding that other members of the syndicate would soon be arrested.

“Until their parents agree to allow them marry the men they love, I will not release the girls. This is because if they are forced into the marriage, they might not live in peace as husbands and wives due to lack of love.

“As parents, we must learn to respect the option of our children and we have been preaching on that which to some extent is yielding results,” he said.

He described the sensitisation campaign as “key and timely” as it would complement the efforts of the council in sensitising members of the area against child abuse, early marriage and domestic violence.

Earlier in her welcome address, Hajiya Mairo Mann, Chairperson of the state GBV Advocacy Committee, advised parents to open up on violence perpetrated against them and their children in order to get justice.

She said the sensitisation campaign was to enlighten and educate parents and children on GBV and appropriate steps to take when confronted by such a situation.

Mann advised parents and guardians to be up to their responsibilities by training their children on the right part as well as monitoring the peer groups their children associate with.

Also, Malam Mustapha Yunusa, Director, Child Development in the state Ministry of Women Affairs, said the sensitisation was to educate parents on response and preventive steps to GBV such as what to do to help victims in terms of medical attention and financial assistance.

In her remarks, Hajiya Tallatu Ekawu, Officer in Charge of Women Development in the Council, lauded the committee for bringing the sensitisation campaign to the area which had further expanded their knowledge and opened their eyes on what GBV is all about.

CAN lauds stoppage of installation of Sultan in Edo

A statement by Bishop Oriname Oyonnude Kure, Chairman, Edo CAN, read, “The attention of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Edo State, has been drawn to the purported plan by a certain Arab tribe from Borno State in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, known as Shuwa Arab to install a Sultan in the great Benin Kingdom of Edo State. What a provocative assault on the Traditional institution in Edo State?

“This is part of the subterranean grand design to Islamize our state in particular and Nigeria in general.

“This sacrilegious act must not be allowed to fester in our state under any guise as it could cause very serious unrest as it challenges our traditional institutions and values of our people. It amounts to duplicity of traditional leadership in Benin Kingdom and it will surely work against the peaceful coexistence of the people.

“This act is totally against the peace of our land and, therefore, unacceptable as it is capable of igniting fracas in Edo State. The Christian Association of Nigeria, Edo State condemns it totally in its entirety. It should be shelved and never again should it be contemplated.

“The Benin Kingdom has only one King with the title of Oba that dates back to the OGISO ERA well over 1000 years ago. This so called Shuwa Arab have no cultural, traditional and consanguinal affinity with Edo people and, therefore, has no part in traditional institutions of Edo State and her people. Edo people’s friendly disposition in accommodating strangers should not be taken for granted and abused,” he added.
