Iwuanyanwu reels out plans for Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The newly-elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has pledged to use his tenure to revive agriculture and industries in South-East to create jobs for its youths.

Iwuanyanwu made the pledge during a Press Conference after the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide held at its National Secretariat in Enugu on Monday.

Chief Iwuanyanwu was on Sunday inaugurated as the new president-general of Ohaneze Ndigbo after Ohaneze Imeobi – the decision making organ of the group – met  in a meeting attended by Igbo leaders.

Iwuanyanwu said he would set up various councils to see that agriculture, industries, education and businesses received the attention they needed in Igboland.

According to him, youths from the region engages in drugs and arms carrying because of poverty resulted from unemployment, stressing that the challenges will be addressed under his tenure.

The president-general hinted that he would tackle the issue of unemployment facing the zone seriously by reviving cement Industries in the zone, revealing that limestone which was the major raw material in making cement was available in the five states of the zone.

To achieve this, Iwuanyanwu said a committee would be set up to mediate between the group, state governments, and private investors who would be given franchise to operate.

“My concern is to ensure that jobs are created, good and services provided.

“We are also going to use Ohaneze to energize our system through agriculture, explaining that if we develop agriculture, it is enough to absorb most of those who are unemployed and reduce criminality,” he said.

He described education and business as very critical for growth and development of any society, adding that proper recognition would be given to young men and women with skills to have opportunity to acquire education and knowledge which is fundamental to any enduring achievement.

On business, he said: “Our businessmen and women have shown patients, commitment, perseverance and courage from breaking from tears in many places and establishing businesses”.

Iwuanyanwu equally said he would take immediate steps to establish an Ohaneze Ndigbo Investment Company whose equity would be held by Ohaneze Ndigbo States not individuals.

He added that the company would also create goods and services, employment opportunities and sources of funds in implementing some of their projects.

  • Why Buhari must release Nnamdi Kanu before May 29 – Iwuanyanwu

Why Buhari must release Nnamdi Kanu before May 29 – Iwuanyanwu

The new President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release the Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from DSS prison.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Chief Iwuanyanwu made the call at his inauguration as the new president-general of the apex Igbo body held at the old Government Lodge in Enugu on Sunday during the Imeobi meeting (inner caucus) of the group.

Iwuanyanwu said Kanu is very crucial for any key discussion to bring peace to the South East and that it is not possible to negotiate any peace while the leader of the proscribed IPOB is in prison.

Iwuanyanwu said the security situation in Southeast was very disturbing, adding that there was very urgent need for a Peace Summit in Igboland.

“I will therefore make a special appeal to Mr. President, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu before the expiration of his tenure in May 29.

“Kanu is very crucial for any key discussion and it is not possible to negotiate any peace while Nnamdi Kanu is in prison.

“It is also important to note that the judiciary has discharged and freed Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. It will be the joy of many Igbo people and Nigerians to see Mazi Nnamdi Kalu released from detention,” Iwuanyanwu said.

He added that there was a report that his health was deteriorating and, “I feel it is important that he is released to have access to his medical doctors so that he does not die in the prison”.

Iwuanyanwu said he never nurtured the ambition to be the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, instead, he had the ambition of becoming the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I contested for the Presidency on three occasions but I did not succeed. I took my losses in good composure knowing fully well that as a Christian, all powers and promotion come from God.

“But today, destiny has placed squarely on my shoulders the duty of leading the Igbos as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

“I therefore have a duty to valiantly defend Igbo course and I promise Ime-Obi and all Igbo people that by the grace of God I will not fail them,” he promised.

The inauguration was attended by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra state and other prominent Igbo leaders like Labour party presidential candidates, Peter Obi, Enugu governor-elect and former Imo State governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim.

  • Why Iwuanyanwu is right man for PG – Ohanaeze youths

Why Iwuanyanwu is right man for PG – Ohanaeze youths

The youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has endorsed elder statesman and Chairman of Ohanaeze Elders’ Council, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, as the organization’s next President-General.

The Financial Secretary, Ohanaeze Youth Worldwide, Mr Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, said this while addressing newsmen on the outcome of a meeting of the youths and Iwuanyanwu in Owerri, on Saturday.

He commended the leadership of Ohanaeze, the apex sociocultural organisation of the Igbo people, for its efforts to replace the organisation’s immediate past President-General, Prof. George Obiozor, now late.

He said that Iwuanyanwu’s endorsement by the youth wing was borne out of a sincere conviction that he was the right person to steer the sheep of the Igbo nation to the safest waters.

According to him, Iwuanyanwu’s leadership will usher in a period of positive development in Igbo land in the areas of education, sports, security and economic emancipation, among others.

He added that there was need for all well-meaning sons and daughters of Igbo land to support his emergence.

“Iwuanyanwu is an experienced, accomplished technocrat and businessman.

“Having interacted with him , we can assure you that with him as President-General, Igbo land will experience the dawn of positive development.

“With him as apex leader, we’ll be able to challenge our people who are not doing well in government and hold government to account for grassroots development.

“To set the records straight, he is not yet the President-General, as against permutations in some quarters, because due process  has to be followed before his emergence,” he said.

He further called on those fanning the embers of discord in Ohanaeze through factional leanings to desist forthwith and join hands with the leadership of the organisation to move the Igbo nation forward.

“Ohanaeze has no factional elders council, no factional leadership. Some persons want us to believe that there are factions but that is not true.

“There is an existing court order restricting everyone from using the name of Ohanaeze to make press statements, except the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Alex Ogbonnia and Secretary-General, Chief Okey Emuche.

“We call on those with dissenting voices to desist forthwith and come together in the interest of the Igbo nation because we are one family and we cannot afford to be divided,” he said.

He, however, urged the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to enable him to access proper healthcare.

This, he said, would contribute to peace in the land.

  • Iwuanyanwu and the ‘political rascals’ rhetoric – By Promise Adiele

Iwuanyanwu and the ‘political rascals’ rhetoric – By Promise Adiele

Samuel Beckett’s absurdist play ‘Waiting for Godot’ avails itself of multiple interpretative tools with a compelling grip on the moral imagination of the audience. As a timeless piece, it thrives on the hopelessness of the human condition dramatized by two vagabonds, Estragon and Vladimir who waited for a mysterious, titular Godot that never came. One of the features of the absurdist literary tradition portrayed in the play is the failure of language in the verbal context as a means of communication. The verbal exchange between the two vagabonds is evident of misinterpretation. One says one thing, the other interprets it differently. Thus, it calls to question the potency of language in the verbal medium as a means of communication. The preceding analogy reminds me of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and his purported insult to the good people of the Yoruba ethnic group. Perhaps, misinterpretation currently manifests as inexorable content of Nigeria’s absurd credentials.

Last week, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, philanthropist, accomplished businessman, the Balogun Babaguwan of Yorubaland, Ahaejiejemba of Igboland and elder-statesman, while reacting to events that happened in Lagos during the last election when many Igbo people were bloodied and harassed, assured the world that “the Igbo and Yoruba are not at war”. On the heels of that statement came another one “they are Yoruba political rascals”. A syntactic analysis of the two sentences affirms that the Chief never meant to insult the Yoruba ethnic group. Rather, he was referring to rascals in Lagos who maimed, killed, and vanquished Igbos, non-Yorubas, and even some Yorubas with Igbo semblance, stopping them from exercising their voting rights during the election. He also said “we know them and we will deal with them”. Language scholars know that Chief Iwuanyanwu did not mean to insult the Yoruba. Sadly, some social nitwits, victims of acute cognitive impairment, went on a rampage to misinterpret and manipulate his statement to suit their treacherous, mischievous purposes. It is absurd.

Anyone who knows Chief Iwuaynanwu’s antecedent will never ascribe offensive rhetoric to him. He is soft-spoken, conciliatory, and peace-loving. Like every sensible person around the world, not just the Igbo, he was aghast with lurid photos and video evidence of harm against the Igbo in Lagos during the last election. Unfortunately, people who ordinarily frolic in the whirlwind of ethnic hate have seized the opportunity to insult the Igbo ethnic group while using acerbic words on the revered Chief. These people, in their degenerate and diseased mentality, are trying to install a wall of hate between the Igbo and Yoruba. Let me state categorically that the Yorubas are wonderful people whose spirit of brotherliness, conviviality, and tolerance speaks volumes across the world. I have maintained over time that the Igbo and Yoruba share a cordial, interwoven relationship in marriage, business, friendship, association and neighbourliness. The two ethnic groups can never be involved in a conflict. Many Yoruba people have helped many Igbo people to their destinies and many Igbo people have helped many Yoruba people to their destinies too. An attempt for one ethnic group to harm the other will result in serious harm for the two. It is as implicating as that.

Since the presidential elections, keenly contested by different candidates from different ethnic groups in Nigeria, some people have desperately sought to reduce the entire development to an ethnic affair. It is myopic and at once condescending. Does Peter Obi represent the Igbo? Does Bola Tinubu represent the Yoruba? Does Atiku Abubakar represent the Hausa/Fulani? These candidates all have supporters across the country. Of course, they will have a preponderance of support from their ethnic bases. That is the way of politics. Unfortunately, ethnic jingoists have, in the inerrancy of their bleak convictions, reduced the entire political discourse to an ethnic affair especially Igbo vs Yoruba. These people, stranded in the realm of ethnic hate and communal intolerance, have done everything within their powers to inflame ethnic tension to crucible dimensions. It is wrong for anyone to insult a whole ethnic group in whatever guise. In Chief Iwuanyanwu’s case, he has put them records straight by clarifying what he meant, insisting that he was quoted out of context. But the morbid and decadent will not hear of it. They insist that Iwuanyanwu and all Igbo should be roasted alive. As far as these simpletons are concerned, the Chief spoke the mind of all Igbos. How idiotic and harebrained can anybody be?

Recently, some people have also indulged in ethnic slurs. Unlike Chief Iwuanyanwu that clarified himself, Bayo Onanuga offered no apology and insisted on standing by his words. Onanuga spoke for himself and couldn’t have insulted the Igbo on behalf of the Yoruba. MC Oluomo, while registering his socio-political disorientation, spoke for himself when he threatened the Igbo on election day and went on to make good his threat which the police shamelessly called a joke. FFK has also made inflammatory remarks which were his personal opinion and not the opinion of the Yoruba. It is therefore, a function of disabled, primitive awareness for anyone to insult an ethnic group based on the comment of one person. Such insults and abuses expose the quiddity of phenomenal foolishness which, hitherto, was concealed in some people by the façade of education. No, these hate mongers belong to the stone age. Nobody should be deceived by their pretentious liberalism.

The question is, are there political rascals in Nigeria? Definitely yes! These are the particular people Chief Iwuanyanwu referred to concerning what happened in Lagos during the last elections. Of course, all parts of the country have their share of political rascals. It is not peculiar to one ethnicity. Political rascals are those who walk the streets, snatch ballot boxes, stab people due to their ethnic origin and prevent them from exercising their civic rights. They are not educated. They are thugs, street urchins, and never-do-wells employed by politicians to advance nefarious objectives. There are also some educated political rascals. They don’t walk the streets, but demonstrate humane deficiency of unimaginable proportions using social media and sundry news outlets. They spread hate, provoke enmity and fan the embers of war. They incite the uneducated, urging them to bay for the blood of ordinary citizens. Their social media handles are replete with expletives and insults. Abusive engagement allows them to flourish. Another category of political rascals populate government establishments like INEC, the Police and different security agencies. These people compromise the electoral process in exchange for financial inducement and material gains. They are unconscionable, desperate and invidious. Are these people from another planet? No, they are among us. We know them.

The ethnic hate narrative is a device enunciated by the political class to keep the people divided, breaking their rank and file to unite and fight a common enemy. The opposition LP and PDP are convinced that the election was marred by sharp, underhand practices and therefore have gone to court. Is going to court to challenge the outcome of an election a legitimate practice? If it is, why can’t detractors of equitable process allow the law to run smoothly? The call by some decidedly frustrated fellows in search of relevance and pecuniary patronage for the arrest of the opposition presidential candidates is from the pit of purgatory. The propaganda that there is a plan to disrupt the handover ceremony is a bundle of falsehood from the depths of Hades. Or perhaps, the guilty are afraid. Although many Nigerians regard the judiciary with a pinch of salt after their macabre dance of shame in recent times, people of goodwill should advocate for a peaceful resolution of Nigeria’s political challenges. Ethnic rhetoric should stop immediately. People should sheath their swords. Let us all close the road to Rwanda.

  • Ohaneze lauds Afenifere for exonerating Iwuanyanwu

Ohaneze lauds Afenifere for exonerating Iwuanyanwu

The Apex Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has lauded the Pan Yoruba Socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, for exonerating the Chairman, Council of Elders, Ohanaeze, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, over an alleged anti-Yoruba comment.

Afenifere disassociated itself from reports that it berated Iwuanyanwu, for allegedly calling the Yoruba people as “political rascals”.

The group stated this in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, in Enugu on Sunday.

It was reported that Iwuanyanwu had, while speaking in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Saturday at the event to mark the one year in office of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, condemned individuals fuelling ethnic baiting in Lagos State.

Ogbonnia said Ohaneze commended the wisdom and maturity in which Afenifere, led by Chief Ayo Adebanjo, discountenance itself from the handiwork of mischief makers in an attempt to misrepresent the remarks by their patriotic, charismatic and detribalized leader, Iwuanyanwu.

He described wuanyanwu as a thoroughbred cosmopolitan, inter-etnic unifier with diverse national and international contacts; and a committed champion of the Nigerian unity.

Ogbonnia added that it was inconceivable for Iwuanyanwu to contemplate an uncomplimentary remark against any group in Nigeria.

He said: “The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to the Communiqué issued by the Afenifere at the end of its monthly meeting held at the residence of its leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, at Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State, Nigeria.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo salutes the courage, tenacity, dedication, robustness and unwavering commitment to the ideals of pan-Nigerianism and the continued existence of Nigeria without caring whose ox is gored.

“We want to place on record that when the history of Nigerian travails is written, Chief Ayo Adebanjo will feature most copiously on the side of justice, nobility, honour, courage, character and integrity,” he said.

The publicity secretary added that Ohaneze applauded and aligned itself to the resolutions of Afenifere meeting in its entirety and prayed that God Almighty would continue to grant the group the wisdom and courage to always champion the cause of a better Nigeria.

“We are persuaded that the Afenifere resolutions as published are fundamental and foundational to the current socio-political crisis gnawing at the heart of Nigeria; and that those resolutions speak truth to the conscience of the powers that be in Nigeria.

“Ohanaeze supports those resolutions in all ramifications and join in calling on the President and Government of Nigeria to, as a matter of urgency, restore public confidence and hope in the Nigerian project,” he said.

He further added that Afenifere’s unflinching stand on the side of equity and justice had not come to them as a surprise given that the organization had at various times, stood for truth each time Nigeria finds herself at the cross-roads.

“We are not unmindful of Afenifere’s role in restoring democracy to Nigeria through the platform of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

“The Afenifere leaders, with alliances across the national divide and the international bodies, launched the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which eventually gave birth to the Committee for Unity and Understanding (CUU), among others.

“We thank the Afenifere for telling the world the true position on the February 25 Presidential election,” Ogbonnia added.

Ogbonnia stressed that Ohaneze commended the Afenifere for its reassurances of security and support to stranger communities in Yorubaland, particularly Lagos State and for reassuring the people that there was no war between the Yoruba and any other group in Nigeria, especially the Igbos.

“We encourage other ethnic socio-cultural organizations to borrow a leaf from the Afenifere in standing up for principles of equity and justice and to be counted each time Nigeria is confronted with political crises.

“We also join Afenifere in restating our confidence in the the judiciary with the hope that it will acquit itself creditably in the election litigations presently before it without fear or favour,” he prayed.

  • South East, North Central not favoured to win presidency – Iwuanyanwu

South East, North Central not favoured to win presidency – Iwuanyanwu

Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Chairman of the Ohanaeze Council of Elders says limiting the zoning of the country’s presidency to North and South is not in the interest of all Nigerians.

Iwuanyanwu made the assertion at a meeting organised to inaugurate the council’s Finance and Development Committee on Sunday in Abuja.

He said if the zoning principle must be observed, it should be across the country’s six geo-political zones. He said this would give every Nigerian opportunity to aspire for the presidency.

The 57-man committee of eminent Igbo business men, inaugurated by Prof. George Obiozor, the President Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, was to proffer ways of financing and developing economic activities in Igbo land.

According to Iwuanyanwu, the South-East and North-Central especially, is not favoured to win the presidency going by the current North, South zoning arrangement.

“If you want to zone, we have six geo-political zones in the country, zone it along the geo-political zones. If you know you want to zone.

“You say you are zoning it to the North and South. If you zone the presidency to the North, there is no way somebody from North-Central will get it, unless there is a mutual cooperation from the North-West. which is very big.

“And if you zone it to the South, even if a zone in the South has been president several times, by this zoning arrangement, it doesn’t stop them from contesting; which is not exactly what zoning is all about,” he said.

He explained that zoning was to ensure fairness, equity and justice, and to see that the position “goes round”, adding that limiting it to North and South was against the interest of other Nigerians.

While noting that the North had more Local Government Areas, Iwuanyanwu said eastern states had fewer.

“Political power is derived from the party and from delegates, and if you look at recent elections, we have fewer local government areas and for you to penetrate to get other places, you have to have money.

“We were not there when local governments were created, it was created by the military, now they say when it comes to South, the South should go and agree and this is not fair,” he said.

Earlier, Obiozor, President Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, said the meeting was also to give effect to matters of immense importance and relevance to Nigerians of Igbo extraction.

He implored Nigerians of Igbo extraction to stop lamenting, adding that they should critically harness the potential and resources in the region to their advantage.

“We have all it takes to deliver succor, development and a better and sustainable society for millions of our people and indeed Nigeria.

“In this wise, our focus will be on economic activities that will engage our youths through employment opportunities and acquisition of skills.

“This should be in line with our known entrepreneurship models, harnessing of potential in the agriculture value chain through processing, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) which are the comer stones of Aslan economics.

“I am conscious of the fact that the tasks we have set for ourselves will not be easy to achieve, but I am happy in the knowledge that they are doable and that we are on the right historical path,” Obiozor said.

He said that the meeting demonstrated the determined efforts of Nigerians of Igbo extraction to tell their stories in a more positive light.

He said membership of the newly inagurated committee would be expanded as the need arose to enrich its ideas and mode of operation.

He said other committees would also be established to handle critical sectors that impacted on the people generally.

He commended Iwuanyanwu for his sterling contributions towards the growth of Ohanaeze Nidigbo Worldwide as a body and the Igbo nation, and Nigerians in all segments of human endeavour.

He also thanked all those who worked closely with Iwuanyanwu to ensure the success that had been achieved.

Members of the committee include Amb. Okey Emuche, (Secretary), Prof. Charles Nwaekeaku, Sen. Orji Uzo Kalu, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezife, Sen. Chief Chris Ngige, Chief Jim Nwobodo and Dr Okweslieze Nwodo.

Others are Chimaroke Nnamani, Dr Obiora Okonkwo, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, Chief Ogbonna Onu, Chief Martin Elechi, Sen. Sam Egwu, Sen. Pius Anyim, Chief Achike Udenwa, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, Dr Peter Odili, Chief Chibuike Amaechi and Chief Celestine Omehia.

Chief Ned Nwoko, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iwuala, Tony Elumelu, Sen. Ken Nnamani, Prof. Barth Nnaji, Sen. Joy Emodi, Chief Mrs Stella Okoli, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, Prof. Maurice iwu are also members of the committee among others.

  • Stop establishing new varsities, Iwuanyanwu advises FG

Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, University of Calabar, has advised the Federal Government to stop establishing more universities and enhance the standard of existing ones.

Iwuanyanwu gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Atta Ikeduru, Imo, on Tuesday.

He said that instead of frequent approval of new universities, government should concentrate on improving standards in the existing ones to produce quality graduates.

Iwuanyanwu said that the standard of education in Nigerian universities had dropped when compared with what obtained more than 40 years ago.

““During our days in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, before the outbreak of the civil war, Nigerian universities were rated among the top universities in the world but the situation today is something else.

“”Government must do something to change the university system, ‘’ he said.

Iwuanyanwu said that the quality of education was central to the advancement of the nation, adding that emphasis must be placed on specialisation by universities for expected gains in the education sector.

The elder statesman expressed support for the restructuring of the country with a view to tackling corruption, repositioning the local government administration and power sector.

““I must commend President Muhammadu Buhari for his courage in embarking on anti-corruption fight.

“”Buhari embarked on War Against Indiscipline as Head of State and now fighting corruption as a civilian president.

““All I want Buhari to do is to extend the anti-corruption fight to all sectors not at the level of leaders alone because a policeman collecting N50 from drivers on the road is involved in corruption.

“ “The one giving gift to somebody in office is also involved,” he said.

The pro-chancellor said that there must be ethical revolution in order to eliminate corruption for Nigeria to get things right.

On the lingering petrol scarcity, Iwuanyanwu advised the Federal Government to construct refineries in all the 36 states as a way of ending the recurrent challenges associated with short supply of petroleum products.
