  • For Okowa, Ibori and Uduaghan: the war can’t but end now – By Mideno Bayagbon

For Okowa, Ibori and Uduaghan: the war can’t but end now – By Mideno Bayagbon

    By Mideno Bayagbon

Recently l had a flying visit to Delta State and toured the state incognito. I even attended a few of the campaign rallies where I tried to make myself as inconspicuous as possible. From Asaba, Agbor, Abraka, Eku, Warri, Effurun, Sapele, Idjere and so on, I slept in villages without light and without telecommunication supply. I spoke to the ordinary people on the streets, and in the villages. In all, I tried to get a feel of the political vibrations on ground.

I wanted to get to know, first hand, what the people think about the Okowa government and where the political pendulum is swinging. I wanted an educated-eye-view of the politics of Delta. What I found was truly dumbfounding, confounding but elating. But I will come to that.

Toured Delta North, starting from Asaba, Okpanam, Igbuzor, Oshimili, Umunede all the way to the two Agbors; yes,two Agbors or more properly the two Ika local government areas of Delta State, split by the major road, now properly tarred and decorated by the Governor Okowa administration, with streetlights, which runs through them.

On one side is Agbor proper (local government headquarters of Ika South) and on the opposite side, Owa Oyibu, Ika North East). There seems to be no unasphalted road on either sides of the two Agbors.

Taking a detour and driving through the DDPA Estate where Jim Ovia, General Lucky Irabor, the Chief of Defence Staff and other notable sons of Agbor have their sprawling mansions, is a delightful sight of lush concrete wonders and unending tributaries of well asphalted roads. It could pass as one of the most luxurious estates in Nigeria. In Delta, it is second only to what has happened in Asaba where eye popping, state of the art, luxuriously humongous mansions make houses in Europe look so archaic. That is a story for another day.

At Ethiope East, I chanced on the unique, first ward-to-ward local government campaign of the Governorship candidate of the PDP. I was there, at the background, when Erhiatake Ibori and Olorogun Ighoyota Amori, publicly, for the first time, endorsed the candidature of the Right Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, to a few raised eyebrows and a tumult of joy rippling through the campaign grounds.

There is apparently a campaign to return all the House of Assembly, House of Representative, Senate, Governorship and Presidential candidates of the PDP, in the state, in what they describe as 5/5.

I left the rally, thereafter, and went on my mission to other towns and villages, ending up through Effurun to Ekpan, my Camp David of sorts for a few days.

It is while there that I became one of the first persons to notice a change in the tide of the political imbroglio bedevilling the PDP in the state. I was one of the first to know of the curious invitation by the former Governor of Delta State, the one I call “Bros”, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, to all the major political actors and leaders of Delta South senatorial district, to a meeting at his Warri home. From inside the meeting, messages came from my sources: “Uduaghan don change o. He don dey stand for Sheriff back o.”

Dr Uduaghan, who with the acclaimed leader of the party in the state, James Ibori were the pillar of David Edevbie’s claim to the gubernatorial candidacy of the PDP in Delta?

A digression. A few days earlier, the camp of David Edevbie who had lost all the way to the Supreme Court in trying to quash the eligibility of Sheriff Oborevwori as flag bearer of the party, had held a meeting of their group where they resolved that the fight for the recognition of Edevbie as the candidate of the party was still on.

This is despite the hand of amity which Edevbie had earlier extended to Oborevwori who the Supreme Court ruled was the candidate of the PDP. This, observers had noted, was ostensibly in continuation of the disagreement between Chief Ibori and Governor Okowa, on who should nominate the successor to the current governor. It has been a very major fight by two close friends; three, if you add Dr Uduaghan who sided with Chief Ibori, and political associates.

People had thought that the fight had become a do-or-die affair for both sides as they strategised to have the upper hand. For reasons, only a few, including myself know, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, is vehemently against the choice of David Edevbie as his successor.

This was seen as an affront on the leadership of Chief Ibori, who until then had the major say in PDP matters in Delta State. Okowa’s insistence was interpreted as an attempt to retire Chief Ibori from the politics of Delta State and ridicule someone who has been his major benefactor. That has been the basis of the war, in what turned out to be two factions of the party, in the state, going forward.

Journalistic instincts kicked in on hearing the news from the Dr Uduaghan Delta South PDP leaders meeting. A quick call to the PDP gubernatorial candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori and to his opponent in the PDP race, David Edevbie. “Bros, na wetin me sef dey hear o”, Oborevwori replied. But as usual, Edevbie, was his usual self, aloof, incommunicado. My next call, just after the meeting ended was to ex Governor Uduaghan. He not only confirmed the news but went further to give me reasons why he, as a major leader of the party in the state and Nigeria, had to take a step back and support the party and its candidates.

His reasons accord with those of mine and Chief Ibori’s mutual friend, a former governor of a neighbouring state. Hearing that I was around, he decided to invite me to visit him in his state. In our discussing the Delta State PDP, he proffered a way forward. Both Governor Okowa, an out-going Governor of the State and now the Vice Presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections and Chief Ibori, the undisputed leader of the party in the state, who happens to be a personal friend of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as well as being one of the national leaders of the party, knows that if they don’t resolve their disagreement, they both stand to lose massively.

The All Progressives Congress candidate, also an Ibori associate is standing in the wings to harvest the fall outs of the fight in the PDP. Ibori moving his support to Ovie Omo-Agege of the APC is a two edged sword which could come back to hunt him, badly. Okowa too, if unrelenting, and toeing the part of war could also pay a costly price, losing votes which should naturally accrue to the PDP in the state.

This is especially so, from my findings in the state, when it is realised that for the presidential elections, PDP needs all hands on deck to confront the new monster, called Peter Obi, who is gaining grounds among the young people of the state. For if the presidential elections were to hold today, APC will come a poor third, not hitting the 25 percent votes needed by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The same cannot be said of the Labour Party candidate. From my findings, he is likely to get more than the 25 percent of the votes if the Okowa and Ibori camps don’t resolve their quarrel quickly and join hands.

True, a counter to the Peter Obi phenomenon is on going in the state. The first phase, the ward-to-ward local government campaigns have just ended. It has been a major mobilisation tool as all the PDP leaders, political appointees, legislators, and aspiring candidates have all relocated to their villages and local government areas. A house to house vote canvassing is on. Which is good for them.

That is why the initiative by former Governor Uduaghan in spearheading a reconciliation and going all out to not just unite the camps but also in stomping the streets for Sheriff Oborevwori is most critical at this time. The governor and the candidate must reach out to Ibori with the necessary assurances. Both sides need each other. That, at least, is what I found on the ground as one, as Rt Hon Oborevwori is fond of saying, who also has a lot of local content in the political affairs of Delta State.

“We were pleasantly surprised to witness once again, your great candour, symbolic charisma, and that natural aura of commanding presence and authority which comes so effortlessly to you, as you rolled back the years and held your party members spellbound, with that admirable interaction which contributed greatly in building and consolidating the image and reputation of the PDP into the formidable force we achieved, with you as the leader of our party.

“As though these powerful statements and actions were not loud enough, you graciously embraced our Governorship candidate Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori at the meeting of the Federal Government College, Warri Old Students Association (FEGOCOWOSA) in Effurun, and in your legendary peaceful disposition and display of politics without bitterness, you followed up that ‘neutral ground’ meeting in Effurun by going to visit Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori at his residence in Osubi, accompanied by key stakeholders and candidates from Delta South and Central Senatorial zones, in your entourage.

“In addition, you recently hosted party leaders and stakeholders from Burutu Local Government Area at your residence in Warri, and your very central involvement and robust participation during our Ward-to-Ward Campaigns in the Delta South Senatorial zone, coupled with your consistent charge and admonition for all party members and indeed Deltans, to embrace His Excellency, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the PDP as a collective Delta project because he is one of our own, have all been much more than we could ever have asked for, demanded and even hoped for from you.

“No pledge could be greater, no assurance sweeter and no support more motivational than the immense and inspiring import of your comments and commitment, in your rightful, incontestable status as one of the great leaders of our party, and with the formidable team of candidates we have assembled for the State and National Assemblies, complemented by our own Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, “Ekwueme”, poised for the Vice-Presidency and surely heading to Aso Rock, the cause of achieving overwhelming landslide victories for the PDP at all levels, in the 2023 elections is already in the bag; a “fait accompli”.

“There are absolutely no doubts, from now henceforth, that your support and commitment will serve as a tremendous boost of encouragement and fillip to all our teeming party members, both loyalists, and contestants, to embrace the remaining campaigns with greater zeal and vigour in the knowledge that, with our leaders like you championing the party, our victory is fully guaranteed.

“We thank you most sincerely for this unparalleled vote of confidence, which has reinforced our trust and faith in the party to deliver and we are truly blessed to have a rare statesman and leader like you with a beautiful heart of gold, the genuine spirit of forgiveness and the unwavering conviction of a true peacemaker, in your concerted quest to ensure that peace and harmony reigns in the PDP.

“Thank you, Your Excellency, for being the great leader you are and will always be. By hosting and bringing the PDP family in Delta South together, you have shocked our detractors into confused speechlessness, truncated their temporary, unfounded glee over a non-existent disenchantment within our party, and proven with a resounding master stroke, that PDP is Delta and Delta is still and will continue to be PDP. It can only get better and brighter from now on. We salute you, the one and only Asamaigor! Agberendiden!!”

  • 2023: Uduaghan intensifies reconciliation efforts in Delta PDP

2023: Uduaghan intensifies reconciliation efforts in Delta PDP

Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, the immediate past governor of Delta State has appealed to aggrieved members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) not to leave the party or work against its interest in next year’s general election.

Dr Uduaghan made the appeal in Warri where played host to leaders and party faithful from Burutu Local Government Area of the state.

The meeting was part of peace moves to reconcile aggrieved members of the PDP ahead of the general election.

He tasked all those who clinched party tickets across all levels to reach out to their opponents, admonishing that a simple phone call or visit will calm aggrieved hearts because everyone spent money.

According to him, it is always painful when one loses a contest but the reality is that there are always winners and losers in every contest.

He maintained that the attitude of the winners can make all the differences – either preventing people from leaving a party or further causing polarization as is evident in the many fallouts from the party primaries.

The Delta South leader therefore assured aggrieved members that the position might reach them in the next contest because politics is a slippery venture.

Dr. Uduaghan used his humble political journey as an illustration that God can pick anybody despite our preferences to fill in any position.

He agreed that qualification can give an advantage but it is not the only determinant because all power belongs to God.

However, the former governor expressed assurance that before the elections, the big PDP family will be united because there has been progress in the peace moves across the state.

2023: I’ll do what will directly impact lives of Deltans – Oborevwori assures

Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 governorship election in Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has assured that he will do what will directly impact the lives of Deltans if elected governor of the State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Rt. Hon. Oborevwori, who is the incumbent Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly gave the assurance on Saturday while playing host to the immediate past governor of the State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan.

“My M.O.R.E Agenda is my social contract with Deltans. Amongst all the candidates, I am the one that is in tune with ordinary people. I don’t believe in talking too much but I will do what will directly impact the lives of the people. I am a Warri man to the core. I live amongst ordinary people and so I know their pains very well. I want to be a servant leader,” Oborevwori said.

TNG reports the PDP guber candidate received former governor Uduaghan who visited him to squash rumour making the rounds that he [Uduaghan] and his leader, former Governor Chief James Ibori are quarrelling over his latest show of solidarity for Oborevwori.

Expressing thanks Uduaghan for his support, Oborevwori said: “Your Excellency, your name has been trending in the media because of your recent decision.

“Another move that struck my heart was when you went to your LGA and Ward to campaign 5/5 for us. This is very dear to me. I am happy that you’re campaigning for your brother Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

“I am not the most qualified but I believe it is the will of God. My life’s story is like that of David in the Bible. I appreciate you for believing in our 5/5 and also reaching out to people to ensure that the party puts up a united front ahead of the elections.

“I am a man with excessive local content. That was one of the reasons you appointed me Special Adviser in your administration. I have said this severally but let me say it before you sir.

“Raising the hand of someone who contested against your daughter is very moving to me. You have shown us that we should not sacrifice the general interest of the party for personal interest. You will be remembered by history for a long long time”.

2023: I’m all out for you – Ex-Gov Uduaghan assures Oborevwori

Former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has again assured the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori of his support ahead of the 2023 elections.

TheNewsGuru.com.com (TNG) reports Rt. Hon. Oborevwori is the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 gubernatorial election in Delta.

On Saturday evening, former Governor Uduaghan of Delta paid a visit to Oborevwori during which he said he “wasn’t under any form of compulsion” to support the Delta State Speaker.

He said the visit was to further show his support for Oborevwori’s candidacy and to squash whatever rumour making the rounds that he and his leader, former Governor Chief James Ibori are quarrelling over his latest show of solidarity for Oborevwori.

Uduaghan said: “I wasn’t under any form of compulsion to support you. I am at a stage in my life where I do things based on my conviction.

“The Supreme Court has ratified your candidacy and gave you the go-ahead to campaign. So we are all out to support you. You’re the candidate who has been subjected to court processes the most in Delta.

“I was the sitting Governor who had been taken to court the most. So we share something in common. I declare today again to stand behind you and every PDP candidate in the forthcoming elections”.

TNG reports that after the reassurance, Dr. Uduaghan quickly added a warning that there are landmines ahead which the candidate should be cautious about.

“There is still a lot to be done before the elections. You need to pass through the heat you’re passing through now in order to be Governor. God has blessed you. Don’t take it for granted. Hold him close because there are bumpier hurdles ahead,” he said.

The former Governor used the opportunity to address his relationship with the leader of the Delta PDP and father of the Ibori Political Dynasty, Chief James Ibori, saying: “Chief Ibori and I are not quarreling over this matter. He has accepted my latest decision to support you. He may publicly declare his stance soon and I know he loves the party more than all of us”.

He also spared a word for party faithful: “If you say you’re behind somebody, stay there. If you think you will remain in the PDP and be working for a candidate of another party, in no time, you will be found out. You will not be trusted by those whom you betray your party for. Please if you’re here, stay here because politics is a very slippery venture”.

He charged everyone to support the Atiku/Okowa Presidential ticket even more vigorously as they support the Speaker.

“I want to plead that the issue of our party’s Presidential ticket be taken seriously like the Governorship. The Vice-Presidential candidate -Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa is the first person from our state who has achieved this feat. Hate him or like him, he is a Deltan. Let us support him. His emergence will be to all of our interests.”

In his response, an elated Sheriff Oborevwori thanked Uduaghan overwhelmingly for paying him the visit and declared that the visit is a “great show of love” from his leader and former Governor. He revealed that he has been trying to be the first to come to visit Dr. Uduaghan but was beaten to it by his big-hearted leader.

“Your Excellency, Your name has been trending in the media because of your recent decision. Another move that struck my heart was when you went to your LGA and Ward to campaign 5/5 for us.

“This is very dear to me. I am happy that you’re campaigning for your brother Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. I am not the most qualified but I believe it is the will of God. My life’s story is like that of David in the Bible.

“I appreciate you for believing in our 5/5 and also reaching out to people to ensure that the party puts up a united front ahead of the elections.

“Raising the hand of someone who contested against your daughter is very moving to me. You have shown us that we should not sacrifice the general interest of the party for personal interest. You will be remembered by history for a long long time,” Oborevwori said.

He concluded by giving a hint about his agenda for Deltans.

“My M.O.R.E Agenda is my social contract with Deltans. Amongst all the candidates, I am the one that is in-tune with the ordinary people.

“I don’t believe in talking too much but I will do what will directly impact the lives of the people. I am a Warri man to the core. I live amongst the ordinary people and so I know their pains very well. I want to be a servant leader. We are very happy having you with us sir,” he concluded.

The immediate past Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has said that God has decided to hand over the power of the State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Speaker of State House of Assembly and State PDP Governorship Candidate for 2023 general elections in the state and declared that; “We are behind you”.

Speaking on Sunday, November 13th, 2022.in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, at a meeting of Federal Government College, Warri Old Students’ Association (FEGOCOWOSA), the former Governor said that he had nothing against the Candidacy of the Delta State PDP Governorship Candidate, Rt Hon Oborevwori, adding that he decided to support him out of his personal convictions.

According to him; “I am sincerely excited that you are here today, something happened on Saturday, November 12th, 2022. I said something somewhere at a meeting and it has been trending in the social media. Many people were surprised that I spoke like that, that I have identified with you properly, it was assumed I was critically against you. Like I told them at the meeting on Saturday, there is no transition from a sitting Governor to a non sitting Governor that it is very easy”.

“A Pastor told me when I was passing through my own, if it is easy that you can drink tea with cold water, it is not possible. The tea has to go through hot water for it to be drinkable, that means sometime to achieve something, you must go through some kinds of heat, we all go through it. You are going through your own heat now, you are going through the heat now and by God’s Grace, you will come out well in Jesus name, Amen”, he added.

The former Governor also said that; “I have openly identified with you on Saturday to kill alot of rumours. Since on Saturday, I have not slept, I have been receiving a lot of messages, why did you do that? Why did you do that? I did it out of my personal convictions, we are humans and we have our divisions. We have issues everywhere.

“Always, there are issues even from the swearing in, when you sit on that seat and lead us more until then, problem will continue every minute, everyday, but by God’s grace you have alot of pushings in absorbing every multiple problems and we are part of the push, we are behind you. Delta State will benefit a lot from your administration if elected Governor next year”.

While speaking, the Delta State PDP Governorship Candidate, Rt Hon Oborevwori said that; “My boss, it is a privilege and honour to be here this today . I got the information that the old students of the Federal Government College, Warri are having a meeting and I decided to come over here to greet you people, but didn’t know my boss and immediate past Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan was here.

“When I got here and saw his car, I was shocked and I am happy meeting him here, he is a very humble, very calm and a very focused leader. He is a man of little words, but full of actions because I have worked with him when he appointed me as Special Adviser on Security. I thank you, Sir”.

“I am part of your product because if I am bad, you have a bad product. His Excellency, I am here to greet you and use this medium to talk to you, thank God I have the opportunity to address the house for few minutes, this is not a political rally, I know some will not like it but as a Warri boy, I know you will like it”, he stated.

    The PDP Gubernatorial Candidate who was accompanied by the Deputy Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly, Hon Solomon Ighrakpata and the member representing Warri South One State Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon Augustin Uroye (JP) also said that;

“I know the terrain very well, I know what the people need and I believe this is the opportunity for Delta Central to produce a Governor. I have served for five and half years as a Speaker in the most vibrant House of Assembly in this country and as the Deputy National Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of States Legislature of Nigeria, no Speaker in the history of Delta State has spent three years or no Speaker has moved from one Assembly to another Assembly and no Speaker has held position at the national level.

“The primaries of our party have come and gone and this is the time for all of us to come together as one family and work together to win the election and I will not disappoint Deltans if elected Governor next year”.

Earlier, Chairman, FEGOCOWOSA Warri Home Branch, Prince Akpobome Ejinyere, lauded the Delta State PDP Governorship Candidate, Rt Hon Oborevwori for storming their meeting and said expectations from Deltans from him when elected as Governor in 2023 general elections are high.

He equally expressed gratitude to the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Uduaghan, an old student of the Federal Government College, Warri for identifying with them.
