Uduaghan faults Delta South Senatorial election

Former Governor of Delta, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, has called for the cancellation of last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly election in the state.

He made the call in a statement issued by his Media Assistant, Mr Monoyo Edon, on Tuesday in Warri.

Uduaghan, who contested for the Delta South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the election was marred with irregularities.

“I wish to state that the election was fraught with a lot of electoral malpractices and ballot stuffing.

“It was also crippled with electoral violence in some parts of Burutu, Bomadi, Patani, Warri North and Isoko North Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

“I have already petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the irregularities during collation and final announcement of result at the Senatorial Collation Centre in Oleh, Isoko South,” he said.

Uduaghan, however, appealed to APC supporters and the people of Delta South to remain calm as further directives would be communicated soon.

He thanked them for their loyalty throughout the electioneering period.

According to the result announced on Tuesday by INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Oladipupo Adesina, Sen. James Manager polled 258,812 votes to defeat Uduaghan, who scored 125,776 votes.

  • Tabai crowned king after losing 8 siblings to barbaric tradition

Delta State Government on Saturday presented staff of office to HRM Francis Fedode Tabai as the traditional ruler of Tuomo clan in Burutu Local Government Area of the State.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports at the presentation ceremony, the story was told of how the Tuomo traditional ruler lost 8 siblings to the barbaric tradition of the killing of twins.

According to the narrative, mother of HRM Tabai had two sets of twins before his birth. Tabai was a single birth. After him, the mother had two more sets of twins. All the sets of twins were thrown into the high sea to drown within hours of being born.

“As the story was being told at the ceremony yesterday, people developed goose pimples even under the hot sun,” former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who was present at the ceremony, said.

“I was imagining what those children would have become today. Happily we were told that a few years after that, it took a bold and courageous headmaster a lot of energy and determination to stop the killing of twins in that area,” Uduaghan, who described Tabai as his friend and elder, added.

According to the Delta State former Governor, at 76 years, Tabai has already achieved a lot in life, at Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta states, and the Federal levels.

“All these achievements were under his control. HRM Rt Justice Tabai has a very rich CV. Something was however, not under his control. He is an only child, having lost 8 siblings to the then cruel “customs and traditions”. Like several traditions in our communities back then, twin children were murdered.

“Today, there are still several customs and traditions that have to be stopped. HRM Rt. Justice F. F. Tabai and his colleagues must be bold enough to stop them. One that must be stopped immediately is female circumcision.

“Congratulations HRM. You started life as a victim of tradition. At well over 76 years, you are back to take control of customs and traditions. I wish you a long and successful reign,” Uduaghan stated.

    Uduaghan mourns Odogwu

A former Delta Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has commiserated with the family of late Chief Sunny Odogwu over the death of the business icon, describing it as a monumental loss to Delta and Nigeria.

Uduaghan told newsmen in Warri on Wednesday through his Media Assistant, Mr Monoyo Edon, that the late Odogwu was always providing useful ideas geared toward moving the state forward.

The former governor said that he also had the opportunity of tapping from Odogwu’s global experience in business.

He extolled the humility of the late philanthropist and industrialist, saying that in spite of his global connections, he returned home and was made a prominent traditional chief in Asaba (Ide Ahaba of Asaba).

“I received with a heavy heart the news of the passage of a renowned businessman, philanthropist and industrialist, Odogwu.

“Odogwu, like many other great businessmen who hail from Delta, brought pride to the people of the state.

“His death is a great loss to our dear state, Delta, Nigeria and personally to me, who had the opportunity of tapping from his global experience in business.

“He was very committed to the development of Delta and Nigeria and provided insightful suggestions and ideas that moved the state forward.

“Whenever I called on him as a governor, he will always give me that listening ear and support,’’ Uduaghan said.

According to him, throughout the period of the construction of the Ultra-modern Government House, Asaba, he visited the site regularly.

“On the first day he landed at Asaba Airport from Lagos, he drove to my office and said, `Thank you governor. I never expected that I will land with a plane into Asaba in my lifetime’.

“In my early years in government, he prepared my mind to what I was going to experience in Asaba. I was therefore not taken unaware when some of those things started happening,’’ he said.

Uduaghan said Odogwu brought innovations into the Nigeria’s business circle through his vast knowledge in commerce.

“On behalf of my family, I mourn with the Odogwus, the Asagba of Asaba, Asaba Traditional Council of Chiefs and the entire Anioma Nation for this painful loss. May his soul Rest In Peace. Amen, ‘’ he said.

The elder statesman died on Nov. 5 at the age of 87.

  • I dumped PDP to promote peace, dev. in Niger Delta – Uduaghan

Former governor of Delta State, Mr Emmanuel Uduaghan has said his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC), was informed by the desire to promote peace and development in the Niger Delta.

Uduaghan, the immediate past governor of Delta state under the platform of the PD between 2007 and 2015, stated this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of APC Caucus held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday night.

The ex-governor was among those that attended the APC National caucus meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and other party members.

According to him, he also moved to APC because of the massive development being witnessed in the Niger Delta region under the APC-led Federal Government.

“Politics is about interest. I’m from the Niger Delta and I managed a lot of crises in Niger Delta.

“Sometimes I went to the creeks and engaged the boys, and my principle when I was managing the Niger Delta was out of engagement, and the current APC government has succeeded in managing the crisis they have met through engagement.

“The President was seeing a lot of leaders from the Niger Delta while the Vice President went from state to state of oil producing states, making a lot of engagements, and agreements were reached.

“Nobody at that level had gone from state to state before in Nigeria, this was the first time and of course if that is happening, they need to be supported by those of us from the Niger Delta who are passionate about Niger Delta so that in moving forward we can have solutions to the crisis of Niger Delta.

“If a new person comes he would start putting agreements up again and all that,’’ he said.

Uduaghan further explained that he was attracted to join the APC because of the massive infrastructural projects embarked upon by the Buhari administration in the Niger Delta region.

He cited the recently rehabilitated rail lines in Delta state and the inauguration of a committee to actualize the Gas City project in the area.

He said: “Secondly in the area of infrastructure, this government has done very well.

“Talking about my state, for the first time a rail line came to Delta, for the first time the gas city which we have been talking about, a committee has been officially inaugurated and for the first time we have human capital development projects, school feeding; a lot is happening in Niger Delta.

“So for me, let me join the party to be able to effect changes because we cannot achieve anything by working from the outside in the Niger Delta.

“Some of us have to join the APC train and many people are going to come with me so that we can achieve a lot more in the Niger Delta for the APC government.

“Politics is about regional interest and I’m interested in the Niger Delta.’’

  • Uduaghan’s defection: ‘We are Stronger,’ Gov. Okowa’s aide reacts

Uduaghan’s defection: ‘We are Stronger,’ Gov. Okowa’s aide reacts

Personal Assistant to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has reacted to the recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) of Emmanuel Uduaghan, immediate past governor of the State.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Uduaghan defected from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (APC) on Tuesday and immediately attended with President Muhammadu Buhari the APC national caucus meeting that held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Politics is a game of interest, no permanent friend and no permanent enemy. On the current defection, there is no panic because we are Stronger,” Ossai Ovie Success, PA to Gov. Okowa on Media, stated on Wednesday.

Uduaghan, who served two terms as governor of Delta State after former Governor James Onanefe Ibori, made his defection to the APC known in a statement he personally signed and exclusively sent to TNG before his meeting with Buhari.

Ibori and Okowa had intervened to convince Uduaghan to remain in the PDP to no avail.

In the statement, Uduaghan revealed that he is going into APC as “John the Baptist” to the numerous Deltans that are coming in soon, very soon, behind him.

He said that since the inception of the current APC administration at the federal level, there has been an encouraging interest and activities by Buhari to bring a permanent solution to the Niger Delta question.

“This has pointed in a direction that is at once progressive and developmental. Rather than using the military to harass our people, the Buhari administration has embarked on various engagement processes that have led to agreements and brought hope to the people of the Niger Delta,” Uduaghan said.

    Read Uduaghan’s full statement below:

The toughest challenge for any leader in the Niger Delta since 1997 has been the issue of Peace and Security. For over 12 years, I was deeply involved in the management of the issues of the region, first as Secretary to State Government, SSG, and then as Governor of Delta State for 8 years.

Strategically, we had ENGAGEMENT as our major tool. This involved government officials, with me in the forefront (sometimes personally going into the creeks without security at nocturnal hours), community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, our youths, retired military officers, activists, etc. Of course, ensuring that Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, was active was also part of the engagement process.

Since the inception of the current All Progressives Congress, APC, administration at the federal level, there has been an encouraging interest and activities by President Muhammadu Buhari to bring a permanent solution to the Niger Delta crisis. This has pointed in a direction that is at once progressive and developmental.

Topmost in these activities are the ENGAGEMENT PROCESSES. Rather than using the military to harass our people, the Buhari administration has embarked on various engagement processes that have led to agreements and brought hope to the people of the Niger Delta. In the last years, Mr. President has personally engaged several regional leaders and youths.

Senior officials of his administration also engaged many Niger Delta leaders and youths. Very significant is that Mr. President mandated the Vice President Prof Yemi Osibajo SAN, to visit virtually all the oil producing states, engaging various stakeholders. This is unprecedented in the history of the region. Such engagement processes have brought some measure of peace in the Niger Delta. Things can only get better.

Beyond the engagement processes, however, the Buhari administration has embarked on some infrastructural and human capital development activities in the region. In Delta State, the opening of a Maritime University; the setting up of a steering committee for the EPZ (GAS CITY), the plan for a deep sea port, the dredging of the Escravos-Warri River; the opening of the railway line to Delta Steel Company, the soon to be flagged off, by Mr.

President, the Omadino-Escravos Road that will pass through many riverine communities; the various road construction works by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the various TCN projects across the State are some of the positive activities in the region.

There are also various human capital development programmes especially the school feeding and the “social security net” that is making 5,000 Naira available to the poor, the continuation of the YouWin programme, the various SME programmes, and several other projects across the region have brought hope to the people.

Indeed, once Mr. President was able to set his priorities pursuant to creating an environment for peace in the region, it became incumbent on every well-meaning Niger Deltan and Nigerian to assist the process of building an economically prosperous nation.

In this era of partisan politics, it is necessary for the people of the Niger Delta, and Delta State in particular, to identify more with the Federal Government led by the APC. By so doing, we can push some of the agreements between our leaders and the Federal Government through, and also engage the government to do more.

Politics is about interests. The Niger Delta is a major area of interest for me, because I staked my life going into the creeks severally without security and sometimes coming back at night negotiating peace. I will, therefore, give the strongest support to any President that shows commitment in the affairs of the Niger Delta. I call on, and enjoin, other well-meaning leaders in the region, who have very useful contributions to make, to come on board and join hands in helping this Federal Government to pursue a robust development agenda that would uplift our people. Whatever milestone that appears not to have been achieved yet is not for lack of efforts. Joining hands with and supporting the process will lead to a faster delivery on expectations.

It is in the pursuit of this noble objective that I’m offering myself to help drive a process that would give the lives of our people in the Niger Delta more meaning. President Muhammadu Buhari needs people who will join hands with him to uplift our people. From my political experience, you have to be well represented and actively so at the “board room” when decisions are being taken. Delta State must be well represented. Niger Delta must be well represented.

It is noteworthy to state that some organisations have been deeply involved in efforts to develop the Niger Delta and can always be relied on to collaborate with our President. It is also noteworthy to add that some previous administrations made significant efforts to develop the region. The current administration made such a significant impact in spite of the fact that apart from Edo State, President Buhari did not score the required 25% in the entire Niger Delta in the election that brought him into government in 2015. This speak volumes of his genuineness to uplift the Niger Delta. Such an administration should be encouraged by the people of the Niger Delta. We can never be sure of the genuiness of another person who becomes the President.

I have, therefore, after series of consultations and prayers, taken the decision to leave the PDP and join the APC. In doing this, I want to thank the numerous leaders, supporters and interest groups that have been urging me to remain in PDP. I am happy that after explaining some of the deeper issues to you, some of you that are politicians have agreed to join the APC in the near future. So I am going into APC as “John the Baptist” to the numerous Deltans that are coming in, soon – very soon.

National task: Predecessor prays wisdom for Gov. Okowa

Given certain national political burden on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, his predecessor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has prayed for wisdom to direct the Delta State Governor.

Former Governor Uduaghan said the prayers in a goodwill message to mark the 59th birthday of Governor Okowa.

“You are celebrating your birthday this year at a very critical period in the history of our dear country, Nigeria.

“A period in which multiple security challenges have become a source of concern. A period in which religious harmony has become a challenge. A period of build up in political activities that will eventually lead to elections.

“As the Governor of Delta State, and a leading member of the main opposition party, the PDP, you are going to be involved in critical decisions and activities that will stabilise this nation.

“It is my sincere prayers that the Grace and Mercy of God will give you the wisdom, critical mind, knowledge, patience & the spirit of discernment to be a major contributor in seeing the nation through.

“May God also equip you with a lot of wisdom to lead Delta State through this period,” Uduaghan prayed.

  • Warri Economic Summit: Warri Port to function optimally again

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and his predecessor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, have said machineries are in motion for the dredging of the Forcados River which will lead to full operations of the Warri Port.

The duo spoke at the maiden edition of Warri Economic Summit held in Warri, Warri South local government area of Delta State.

According to the Governor, “it is our sincere hope that with the anticipated dredging of the Escravos bar, bigger ships can berth at the Warri port and this should lead more businesses to return to Warri, the industrial hub of Delta State.”

“Let me use this opportunity to commend the Nigerian Port Authority for awarding the contract for the dredging of the Escravos channel; this project is necessary for the port to regain its pivotal role in the economy and it is my belief that we can use the port as a platform to promote the growth and transformation of the State and national economies,” the Governor said.

The Governor disclosed that to ensure hitch free movement to the Warri Port, his administration has secured more than 50 hectares of land through the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom for the construction of tankers’ park.

While asserting that his administration was committed to providing a congenial atmosphere for private enterprises to flourish by proving peace and the building of strategic infrastructures across the State, the Governor stated, “the theme for this summit: Warri Rising is most appropriate, Warri is no doubt the economic nerve center of the State and also the most populated; it is that, which makes this summit critical to our overall vision to develop the State; Warri began trading with Europe more than 500 years ago.”

Governor Okowa urged the people to remain peaceful and avoid criminal activities.

To former Governor Uduaghan, “the youths must accept that the Warri Port must work, this whole exercise is about the youths, their future and I congratulate Hon. Tidi for organising this event.”

He noted that efforts are on for the dredging of the Forcados River adding that blame game should stop and the people should take responsibilities for their actions.

Former Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Prince Raymond Temisan Omatseye, said, Warri Port cannot function with collaborative efforts with other local government areas.

He emphasised that the Escravos Bar will be dredged for the Koko and Warri Ports to be functional and called on the youths to ensure peaceful environment for development projects to take place.

Chairman of Warri South local government area, Hon. Michael Tidi had in an address, said the economic summit was important because, “Warri needs to regain her pride of place as a business hub in Nigeria and in West Africa and the 2-day summit is to rebrand Warri away from negative connotations of the last decade or two, identify sector Warri can be number 1 or 2 in business within the next 3 years and identify what can be done to revive maritime trade in Warri within the next 6-12 months.”

  • Uduaghan speaks on senatorial ambition, boasts of capacity

Uduaghan speaks on senatorial ambition, boasts of capacity

Immediate past governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has reiterated the fact that he has the capacity to give good representation to Delta South Senatorial District at the National Assembly come 2019.

Speaking to media men last weekend, the Itsekiri-born politician said his desire to go to the Red Chamber was not for the fun of it, but to ensure more development comes to Delta South and other senatorial districts under Delta State.

Dr. Uduaghan, a PDP stalwart, revealed that having consulted with his immediate family, the Itsekiri people and stakeholders from the other ethnic groups that fall under Delta South Senatorial District including Ijaw, Isoko and even Urhobo, he was confident that the time has come for him to represent his people.

The ex-governor also declared that Delta South deserved more projects and development even as those who represented the district as senators in the past had worked tirelessly to achieve this.

He particularly lauded Chief James Ibori, the former governor, under whom he served as Commissioner for Health before taking over as governor himself as well as the incumbent governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for their efforts in sustaining peace being enjoyed in the state.

While soliciting the support of the people in the district to ensure he emerges victorious both in the primary and the general elections, Dr. Uduaghan noted that his performance in the senate if elected would double his laudable achievements when he was the governor.

“I know it is the turn of Itsekiri to go to the senate, but I need the support of my brothers and sisters from both Ijaw, Isoko and part of Urhobo that make up the senatorial district.”

“I know that my past performance will also speak for me, hence I am canvassing for the support of the people.”

“Am not going to the Senate because am Itsekiri. My aspiration is not ethnic but knowledge and capacity based.”

“We also need to look at laws that will improve income accruing to oil-bearing communities. There should be a law that compels every company operating in the Niger Delta region to contribute a percentage to the host communities. This is done in Arizona and the Netherlands. Ours, here, should not be an exception.”

“And to ensure a near absolute peace and security in the Niger Delta, local youths should be engaged to assist security men in intelligence gathering; through this, we’ll be able to reduce a lot of criminal activities in the creeks. These and more I have in store to undertake as a Senator from the region come 2019” the ex-governor said.

He also advised the people not to regard elections as a do-or-die affair, explaining that Nigerians should continue to play politics without bitterness.

  • Femi Fani-Kayode calls Emmanuel Uduaghan “idiot”

Femi Fani-Kayode on Sunday referred to former Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan as “another lily-livered useful idiot and accursed slave” after the former governor’s comment on looters’ list.

TheNewsGuru reports Uduaghan, who is an aspirant for Delta South Senatorial District, had on Saturday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) put itself under unnecessary pressure by asking the government to produce the looters’ list.

“PDP started the trouble. You said the government should mention the names of those who looted the treasury and they brought out the first list, second list and the third is being awaited.

“We’ve given work to ourselves and people are now struggling to go to court to clear their names. We’re now the ones busy, trying to defend ourselves and the government is just laughing; APC is just laughing.

“So, whatever list you’re publishing, saying this is APC’s list of corrupt people, you’re just wasting your time.

“I always advise people to be careful when you’re confronting the government, because the government has access to a lot of information.

“There are things you might have taken for granted or forgotten and somebody has recorded it and it’s in the hands of the government.

“I don’t think the PDP should have challenged the FG on the list issue; it was a big mistake and we’ll suffer for it,” Uduaghan said.

Reacting to the Uduaghan’s comments, Fani-Kayode said, “Another lily-livered useful idiot and accursed slave has spoken”.

“To think that this man was once a Gov. on the platform of the PDP sickens me,” he added.

  • JUST IN: Olu of Warri, Uduaghan, Pinnick, Ayiri storm State House Abuja with demands

President Muhammadu Buhari today received at the State House Abuja the Olu of Warri, HM Ogiame Ikenwoli and a delegation of Delta state indigenes including former Delta state Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Also on the entourage are the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, Chief Ayiri Emami, Chief Brown Mene, and others.

Speaking with State House correspondents shortly after meeting with Buhari, the Olu said the essence of the visit was to intimate the President on the need to give attention to key projects of national importance domicile in his kingdom, that rottening away.

“Our ports are not working,” he said, stressing that the Warri Port and Coco Port are “very good and solid” ports.

“While other ports in other areas are working, ours are just left unutilised and so we want the ports to be activated so that they can start working, and that will mop up a lot of youths from the streets,” he further stated.

Drawing attention of President Buhari to the gas city, which the king described as “a fantastic project,” he said, “The last president did the ground breaking before he left but since then nothing has been happening. We want the federal government to hasten action on it because that will mop up over 300,000 youth from the streets. When our youths are engaged, the restiveness will be minimised”.

“We have the Escravos road, the railway that is going on now, we want it to come to the area. By that, the economic activities will thrive better and Nigerians will be happy for it,” he added.

The Olu assured that Buhari will attend to his requests saying “he will do his best,” adding “His hands are tied because everybody demands his attention, that he will follow to ensure things are done”.

The immediate past governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan, who was part of the delegation also spoke briefly and said he was encouraged with the president’s response on the challenges presented by the Olu of Warri.

“We presented the challenges of security, you know we are in an area in the Niger Delta where there has been a lot of insecurity challenges.

“We also have challenges of ecological problems, we also have the problem of infrastructure development, problem of access to ports which is very critical. Delta has six ports and to be able to get to the ports there is a place called Escravos bar which has been very shallow.

“Even the water channel is highly stilted and so he was appealing to the federal government to dredge the Escravos channels so that the bigger ships will be able to come into the ports of Delta, especially the Warri ports,” Uduaghan said.
