Senegal become first African team to beat England

Senegal became the first African team to beat England in 22 games on Tuesday, winning 3-1 in a friendly at the City Ground in Nottingham, UK.

The result meant Senegal stretched their unbeaten streak to 24 games, thanks to goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly.

England’s loss, which included a disallowed late goal from Jude Bellingham for a handball in the build-up, was their first defeat in four games under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

“Not good enough,” captain Harry Kane told reporters.

“We had moments, but with and without the ball things aren’t clicking, we’re not finding the right tempo. We’ve lost that aggressive nature that we had.”

England — with 10 changes from Saturday’s 1-0 lacklustre World Cup qualifying win over Andorra — took the lead when Kane struck in the seventh minute.

This was after Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved Anthony Gordon’s shot but spilled the ball into the striker’s path.

The hosts conceded for the first time under Tuchel when Sarr caught Kyle Walker napping to poke in Nicolas Jackson’s cross in the 40th minute.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 62nd when Diarra latched onto a ball over the top then fired through goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s legs.

Sabaly struck deep into stoppage time, prompting boos from England fans after the final whistle.

“We’re not going to panic but we know we need to be better,” Kane said.

“New ideas, there’s new players coming into the team that don’t have experience at international level.

“It’s a mixture of things but no excuses. We need to find it quick, the World Cup is going to come around really fast so every camp is really important right now.”

Senegal peppered Henderson with nine shots on target to England’s four, including an early header from Sarr that the goalkeeper pushed wide of the post.

Gordon squandered a glorious chance to give England a two-goal lead in the first half when he mis-hit Walker’s cross from close range.

Mendy made a great late save to deny England what would have been an equaliser from Bukayo Saka before Senegal added their third.

“Disappointing result, not sure if we didn’t deserve a little bit more result-wise,” Tuchel said.

He added, “But felt again a bit frozen, not active enough for a long time of the match.

“We conceded the first two goals, very easy goals, that we needed to defend better.

“The reaction was good after we were down, suddenly more active, more free, more fluid, more aggressive toward the opponent’s goals. We had then big chances to equalise.”

2.5m people in England likely to have hyperactivity disorder

Almost 2.5 million people in England are likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), figures suggest.

ADHD is a neuro-developmental disorder and people with the condition may have trouble concentrating or sitting still.

Other symptoms include being easily distracted, forgetfulness, finding it hard to follow instructions or organise time, and making impulsive decisions.

It is the first time an estimate has been made publicly available of how common the condition may be among the population.

According to NHS England, a total of 2,498,000 people may have ADHD, including those without a diagnosis.

Of this number, an estimated 741,000 are children and young people aged five to 24.

The figures were developed using estimates from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice), which suggests that around 3-4 per cent of adults and 5 per cent of children and young people have ADHD.

While ADHD is not usually diagnosed in children under five as some traits can be part of typical development.

While the prevalence in youngsters aged four and under have been calculated to give an insight into how many may go on to be diagnosed in the future.

According to the NHS estimates, some 147,000 under-fives are likely to have ADHD.

The figures also suggest that more than half a million people (549,000) in England were waiting for an ADHD assessment at the end of March 2025.

This is up from 416,000 a year earlier at the end of March 2024.

Of the 549,000 likely to be waiting for ADHD assessment in March this year, some 304,000 had been waiting at least a year while 144,000 had been waiting at least two years.

More than two-thirds (382,000) were aged between five and 24.

Louise Ansari, chief executive at Healthwatch England, said the figures are “a first step in understanding the scale of demand for ADHD care”.

“Our new research highlights that many people with ADHD may simply be going without support,” she added.

“Long waits for assessments are one of the reasons people who show ADHD traits don’t seek help, while those waiting for an assessment struggle to navigate the long waits.

“While we welcome today’s publication, however, there is a way to go to ensure data is comprehensive and robust.

“A move to official waiting list data in the longer term would give a clearer picture of waiting times, including who is experiencing the longest waits and why,”she said.

Tuchel hails Bellingham, cautions on his emotions

England manager Thomas Tuchel has told star midfielder Jude Bellingham he needs to “channel his emotions” if he is to contiue being a leader in his squad.

Speaking to the press after England’s 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Albania on Friday, Tuchel gave the 21-year-old a stark warning.

Tuchel said: “He (Bellingham) loves to talk to the referee and the linesmen. He’s a very emotional player once he’s on the pitch and I think you just see that he hates to lose and does everything that it takes. He expresses himself.

“You see the hunger and the desire to win. I think he will keep this hunger and learn to channel the emotions a little bit.

“That’s never a problem. It’s good to have him as he is. We will try to make the most out of it because he is a key player.”

Bellingham now has 41 senior England caps at the age of 21, breaking Wayne Rooney’s previous record.

Jude Bellingham made his 41st senior England appearance in their World Cup qualifier against Albania, surpassing former Man United forward Wayne Rooney’s record haul for any player aged 21 or under.

The 21-year-old was, unsurprisingly, called up by new England manager Thomas Tuchel as part of his first squad.

Bellingham provided the assist for Myles Lewis Skelly’s debut goal, penetrating Albania’s low block with a pin-point pass into the 18-year-old.

Despite his apparent seniority, Lewis-Skelly was the only player in Tuchel’s first squad who is younger than the Real Madrid super star.

England will face Latvia in their second game of the March international break as Tuchel seeks to end the nation’s 60-years of hurt at the 2026 World Cup.

The central midfielder will return to Spain after the break as Real Madrid face an uphill battle to beat Hansi Flick’s free-scoring Barcelona in the race for the La Liga title.

Why Foden better for Man City than England – Lescott

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has weighed in on the debate about Phil Foden.

Many fans and pundits have been debating whether the City star is good enough for the Three Lions.

Foden has not impressed for his national team in the past couple of years, despite having six Premier League titles and a Champions League to his name.

Lescott, speaking to the Filthy Fellas Podcast, said: “It’s not a position it’s just getting players into areas where they can affect the game.”

“It’s like the Trent one,” Lescott said, referencing Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool.

“He doesn’t have to be (starting) in midfield but can you get him into those areas of the field where those passes can be made?”
