Praise rains down on Chelsea midfielder after Euro performance

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour is being praised after his performance for Scotland in their 0-0 draw with Euro opponents England.

In his first Scotland start, the Chelsea youngster was the “best player on the pitch” according to Graeme Souness, a man who knows a thing or two about being a midfielder.

His composure on the ball, range of passing and tenacity left Scotland fans applauding him off the pitch after 76 minutes.

“My God… right up there,” Scotland captain Andy Robertson said when asked about Gilmour’s performance. “Nothing fazes him. He can have as many caps as he wants for Scotland.”

Manager Steve Clarke was also impressed, if not shocked at the Ayrshireman’s talent.

“We knew before we put him in he can play, it’s just getting the right moment. Tonight was his big moment and he took it and no-one was surprised by it, certainly not in our camp,” he said.

Gilmour won the ball back eight times, more than any player on the pitch. It was a complete midfield performance, and one that Souness said England could have done with.

“They need a Billy Gilmour,” he said on ITV. “They need a maestro. The best player on the pitch. Never gives the ball away which is fabulous for a midfielder.”

I’m better now than 2018 World Cup – Harry Kane

Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane believes he is a better player since the 2018 World Cup.

Kane won the Golden Boot at that tournament as England reached the semi finals.

As they prepare for their second Euro 2020 group game against Scotland, after defeating Croatia 1-0 in the opener, Kane spoke about his own progress as a player in the past three years.

“I’ve become a better player and I’ll hopefully continue to do that over the next three years as well,” he told reporters.

“I’ve got a lot more experience, my game understanding is a lot better. I feel like I’ve got better at knowing when to drop deep and when to run in behind, using that to my advantage.

“We all have to believe we can win it. That’s the reason we’re in this competition, to try to win it. That’s the only way you’re going to get far in tournaments. Of course we believe we can win it.”

Euro 2020: Mourinho names two Scotland players to upset England

Jose Mourinho says Scotland need their players to produce a five-star performance for a chance to upset England today.

Writing for The Sun, Mourinho said: “You must believe Scotland’s mentality can make their team much better than the sum of its parts — but England are much, much better.

“Scotland are based on their three best players — Kieran Tierney, Andy Robertson and Scott McTominay.

“And without Tierney against the Czech Republic, they were reduced to two top-quality players.

“I would expect more from John McGinn and Stuart Armstrong, they are good Premier League players.

“Scotland, though, are a team with a good mentality but without real talent, especially in attack.

“I was surprised with Scotland against the Czechs in the way they really struggled to build their game. The quality wasn’t high.

“Their spirit will be doubled at Wembley but England just have to approach the game in a serious way and win.”

  • Euros can’t be won without these 2 players – Rooney warns England

Euros can’t be won without these 2 players – Rooney warns England

Former England captain Wayne Rooney says they can’t get carried away with victory over Croatia in their Euro 2020 opener.

Rooney insists the Three Lions’ main priority should be getting Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson fit.

Both stars were nursing injuries when selected in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the summer tournament.

But Henderson has since featured in England’s 1-0 friendly win over Romania and was named on the bench for the team’s opener against Croatia, while Maguire has re-joined the squad in training.

Derby boss Rooney told Sky Sports: “There’s a lot of quality in the squad, my only worry is a lack of experience – it’s important Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson get fit because they will be vital moving forward.

“Quality-wise they have as much as anyone in the competition and they have a great chance.”

Despite the two stars not featuring in England’s win, the team’s all-time record goalscorer added he was impressed with the performance at Wembley.

“It was a good positive start, a solid professional performance,” Rooney added.

“With the heat it was never going to be an end-to-end game, it was always going to be a game of moments.

“To win that was massive, Croatia are a good team and it will give the players a relief that they are comfortable in the group now.

“They’ll be a bit more relaxed going into the game against Scotland and if they didn’t win they could have been a bit anxious.”

Euro 2020: I knew I had to score here – England matchwinner

Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling was delighted to prove England’s matchwinner for their Euros victory over Croatia on Sunday.

Sterling struck the only goal of the game for the 1-0 win.

He later said, “It feels good to score. I always said if I played at Wembley at a major tournament I had to score and it’s great to finally do that.

“There’s a lot of different reasons why I haven’t scored for my club and it’s totally irrelevant now. I’m here with England and I’m enjoying my football. That’s the most important thing.

“Have I justified my selection? [after several seconds]…I’m trying.

“It’s great to get off to a win and now we have other games to look forward to. It’s been a long season for me but I couldn’t wait to get here and get started with England. With England, I knew it would be a positive one.”

I was offered England and Portugal jobs – Mourinho

New Roma coach Jose Mourinho admits he’s been offered major national team jobs.

Mourinho says he was offered both the England and Portugal posts during his career.

He told The Sun: “England when I left Chelsea, but I realised that it was too early for me.

“Portugal when I was in Real Madrid. It was a crazy bid for a part-time job.

“It’s the kind of job I think I’ll enjoy later.”

  • Leicester City star open to playing for Nigeria

Leicester City star open to playing for Nigeria

Ashleigh Plumptre, who plays for Leicester City’s women’s team, says she is open to playing for Nigeria despite representing England at youth level.

The 23-year-old is eligible to play for the Super Falcons because of her father’s Nigerian heritage.

“The idea of me being able to play for Nigeria, with that being an option, I would happily grab that with both hands,” Plumptre told BBC Sport Africa.

“What representing something that really means to somebody is very important. Obviously, there’s a lot of things I can openly say that I don’t know about Nigerian culture but I want to learn because I know that it’s in me, and it’s in my sister and in my dad.

“We can only get it from my granddad, he’s the only thing that we know in terms of Nigeria. I’ve obviously visited Nigerian relatives in America and in England.

“Seeing this little journey my sister and I have been on, and the understanding of our family heritage, not just that but watching Nigerian documentaries and learning about the past is incredible.”

After establishing herself at club level, Plumptre who has a British mother, believes a potential international career with Nigeria could pave the way for other biracial footballers to follow.

“What it will mean for me as somebody who is British born but with Nigerian heritage is huge. People look at me and they think I’m tanned and that I’ve been on holiday, they don’t think that I’m Nigerian,” she added.

“I don’t think that should be significant in saying whether somebody is Nigerian or not because it’s in your blood, it’s not about what you look like.

“My sister, she looks African because she has an Afro and her skin tone is darker than mine, with that obviously, she’s had different experiences in school than I have had.
“I think with football being my platform, I am using that as something that’s bigger than me. As much as I can resonate with my Nigerian heritage.

“I feel like I can hopefully inspire someone like my sister or other kids like her maybe in this country or other countries to look at me and be like you know what? It doesn’t matter what your skin tone looks like.

“If you can resonate with your heritage and it means something to you, it means you can represent something bigger than you, then that’s what it comes down to.

“I think people too often look at the surface of this rather than actually try to find out inside what our drives and passions are, and what means a lot to us.”

  • England call up White to replace Alexander-Arnold in Euro 2020 squad

England call up White to replace Alexander-Arnold in Euro 2020 squad

Brighton defender Ben White has been added to England’s Euro 2020 squad.

The 23-year-old was selected by Three Lions’ manager Gareth Southgate to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was forced to withdraw from the 26-man party due to injury.

White’s inclusion was announced by the Football Association (FA) on Monday morning as the team continue preparations for their European Championship opener against Croatia.

White made his debut in last week’s 1-0 friendly win over Austria and impressed as he started alongside Tyrone Mings in Sunday’s victory against Romania.

He tweeted: “Beyond proud and honoured! I’ll give it my everything @England.”

Alexander-Arnold was ruled out after suffering a thigh injury late on against Austria and Southgate took his time to decide which of his standby players would come in.

Everton defender Ben Godfrey and Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse were other options who both started the Romania game.

Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins were also on the standby list, but will now return home.

Euro 2020 kicks off on Friday night, with England’s clash with Croatia taking place at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Southgate still has plenty to ponder before then, with fitness concerns remaining over Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Southgate was also unable to call upon the seven members of his squad who featured in the 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League final match.

He will run the rule over Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Mason Mount, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling in the coming days.

  • Rashford penalty kick seals win after England booed for taking knee

Rashford penalty kick seals win after England booed for taking knee

England beat Romania 1-0 thanks to a Marcus Rashford penalty kick in their final pre-Euro 2020 warm-up match on Sunday.

But the game was once again marred by supporters booing the Three Lions for taking the knee.

Fans had jeered England players for showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement at the start of the 1-0 win over Austria earlier in the week.

But, with Gareth Southgate clearly explaining on Saturday that his team’s gesture was motivated by racial injustice rather than politics, boos were still clearly audible once more at the Riverside Stadium.

Potentially deflated by those fans’ blatant disregard for the team’s feelings, perhaps England’s rather subdued start in Middlesbrough had a straightforward explanation.

Southgate’s side did not pose much of a threat until Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho hit the crossbar after the half-hour mark.

The visitors looked as much of an attacking threat as England, but good work from Jack Grealish earned a penalty kick with 22 minutes to go.

Rashford – captain for the day – converted with aplomb, with Jordan Henderson unable to follow suit from the penalty kick spot a little later.

Romania looked much sharper than England initially, with Denis Alibec shooting just wide of the top-right corner and Razvan Marin firing at Sam Johnstone following a flowing move.

Florin Nita in the visitors’ net had very little to do before having the bar come to his rescue in the 32nd minute.

It kept out a ferocious Calvert-Lewin header, and then again six minutes later as Sancho’s bending effort following a clever offload by Grealish had left the goalkeeper looking helpless.

But Romania still posed a threat at the other end, with Deian Sorescu testing Johnstone after being released in behind the suspect Tyrone Mings.

An encouraging aspect was the performance of Rashford, who after a difficult spell at club level, did well in the 62nd minute as he collected Calvert-Lewin’s lay-off.

He burst into the Romania half before shooting wide on the stretch after a lung-busting run.

Rashford was decisive soon after, however, coolly slotting in a penalty kick after Grealish —- who was fouled on five occasions more than anyone else —- found himself tripped by Tiberiu Capusa.

Henderson, introduced at half-time for his first outing since February, passed up the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty kick spot as Nita saved his kick.

This had followed a foul on Calvert-Lewin by Vlad Chiriches.

That came hot on the heels of Johnstone producing a wonderful stop to thwart Andrei Ivan, with England ultimately settling for the 1-0 win.

England now turn their attention to the Euros, with their campaign beginning against Croatia at Wembley on June 13.

  • England goal biggest moment of my career – Saka

England goal biggest moment of my career – Saka

Arsenal whiz Bukayo Saka was proud of his first goal for England last night against Austria.

The strike proved to be the winner of the friendly.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the game, Saka said of his goal: “Probably the biggest moment of my career so far, the biggest moment was getting called up for England the first time and now to score the goal it sounds nice, it’s an amazing feeling for me.

“You dream of that as a kid, scoring for your country, coming through the age groups with England so to now do it here and score for the seniors, it’s an amazing feeling and I hope I can have this feeling many more times.

“Every game is an opportunity to grow in confidence and chemistry with my team-mates, so today is another step in the right direction.

“It’s a big honour to be named in the final squad, grateful to Gareth [Southgate], happy that I get the opportunity to represent my country in a major tournament so I’m looking forward to it a lot.”
