Man Utd ready to sell Martial to bid for Kane

Premier League club Manchester United will consider offers for French forward Anthony Martial this summer.

The Times says Tottenham striker Harry Kane is attracting interest from United this summer and the club could even sanction the sale of Martial to fund the England captain’s transfer.

Martial has taken a step backwards this season after an encouraging campaign leading the line.

And the Frenchman could be the ‘designated causality’ should United sign a star striker.

Kane is the elite forward who could be available this summer and United could sell injury-hit Martial to fund a sensational transfer.

Martial has also been mentioned as a makeweight in a swap for the England captain.

  • Difficult to play under Jose Mourinho – Rashford

Difficult to play under Jose Mourinho – Rashford

Marcus Rashford has admitted that it was difficult for him to play his best football under former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Rashford burst onto the senior stage at United when Louis van Gaal was in charge at Old Trafford in 2016, before having to adjust to life under a new boss after the Dutchman’s sacking at the end of that season.

Mourinho handed the England international a prominent role in his set-up after moving into the dugout, but he wasn’t able to deliver the goods in the final third on a consistent basis during the Portuguese’s two-and-a-half-year reign, which he puts down to being stifled from a creative standpoint.

Quizzed on whether Mourinho allowed his players to express themselves freely going forward, Rashford told BT Sport: “I think that’s when we play our best football (when we can be flexible).

“Under Jose I would say everything was a bit (points) ‘you play there, you play there, you play there’.

“And yeah, you can do a job, but it was difficult for me to play my best football.”

Rashford’s old team-mate Wayne Rooney also weighed in on Mourinho’s rigid matchday planning, recalling the time he was benched in favour of his fellow countryman for United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in 2017-18.

“I remember a Chelsea game, I was on the bench. Marcus kept me out the team!” the Red Devils legend added on Rio Ferdinand’s Between the Lines show. “I remember he (Jose) played a back SIX.

“And I remember thinking, ‘Jose’s put Marcus up top on his own. Unless he runs in behind, Chelsea and David Luiz, with all that experience, if he comes to feet we’re in trouble.’”

  • I’m getting faster and stronger – Chelsea defender

I’m getting faster and stronger – Chelsea defender

Chelsea fullback Reece James is delighted with his form this season.

James says key to his progress has been his fitness.

He told the club’s website: “Physically I’m feeling good. Last season I had an injury at the start of the season so it took a while getting into it, but this season I’m happy with the amount of games I’ve played so far.

“Being in and around the team right from the start, it always helps. Coming into the season late, when the team’s doing well, is always tough, so being there from the start, from the get-go, is always easier and helps you gel quicker.

“I’ve always been quite a strong and powerful boy, but getting faster and stronger and tougher is not going to make me a worse player, so I’ve always tried to improve on it wherever I can and hopefully it transfers onto the pitch.

“I worked on chesting the ball quite a lot when I was a younger lad coming through in the Academy, but I don’t know, if the ball comes to my chest, I control it with my chest. It’s not something I really think about or do deliberately. Because I practised, now I do it without thinking, I’m suppose I’m just very comfortable controlling it on my chest and bringing it down.”

On the season run-in, James added: “The target this season is, come the end of the season, to have trophies. The aim of the club and everyone here is to win titles and we’re still in many competitions. We need to keep up our good form and keep working together as a team and hopefully we can achieve that.

“I think wherever you learn anything, you can always take it wherever you go, no matter the situation. In football, many situations, they always reoccur, and I just have to take the experience from what I’ve learned and what I’ve got and use it in the challenges that are going to come up towards the end of this season.”

Tottenham set to replace Lloris with England goalkeeper

Tottenham are ready to replace Hugo Lloris with an England goalkeeper this summer.

The Sun says Dean Henderson (Manchester United), Nick Pope (Burnley) and Sam Johnstone (West Brom) are in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad that met up on Monday.

And the trio are all on Spurs’ shortlist to replace Lloris as their No 1.

The club captain, who delivered a stunning outburst at Jose Mourinho’s squad after last week’s Europa League exit to Dinamo Zagreb, has just a year left on his deal.

He is tipped to want to return home to France his summer, leaving Spurs looking closer to home for a successor.

Lloris, 34, has played 363 times for Spurs since they signed him from Lyon for £11m in 2012.

He has been linked with a summer switch to join former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain.

Prince Harry reveals main reason for leaving Britain

Prince Harry said a large part of the reason he and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, left England for a life in the United States was racism in Britain.

In new footage aired on Monday from the interview on U.S. television network CBS, Oprah Winfrey asked if the couple left because of racism, the prince replied: “It was a large part of it.’’

He added that he was urged by an unnamed person at a fundraiser for his charity Sentebale to not do this with the media as they will destroy your life.

The prince said he was told “You need to understand that the UK is very bigoted,’’ to which he replied “The UK is not bigoted, the UK press is bigoted, specifically the tabloids.’’

Harry added, “But unfortunately if the source of info is inherently corrupt or racist or biased then that filters out to the rest of society.’’

  • COVID-19: UK PM announces England-wide lockdown

Nearly 56 million people in England will return to a full coronavirus lockdown, possibly until mid-February, to try to cut spiraling infection rates, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday.

The measures, which include the closure of primary and secondary schools, will come into effect Wednesday, he said in a televised address, after Scotland announced similar measures would come into force from midnight (0000 GMT) on Tuesday.

Some 44 million people or three-quarters of the population of England are already living under the toughest restrictions, as Britain grapples with one of the worst mortality rates from coronavirus in the world.

But they have failed to halt an upward trend in positive cases, which have been blamed on a more infectious new variant.

Johnson said that as of Monday, almost 27,000 people with Covid were in hospital — 40 percent more than at the peak of first wave of the outbreak on April last year.

Last Tuesday, more than 80,000 people tested positive in just 24 hours.

“With most of the country already under extreme measures, it’s clear that we need to do more, together, to bring this new variant under control while our vaccines are rolled out,” he said.

“In England, we must therefore go into a national lockdown.”

The new measures are similar to those during the first, three-month lockdown from late March to June last year.

They include the closure of schools, working from home wherever possible, limits on leaving home, except for exercise, essential shopping and for medical supplies, and no household mixing.

A decision on whether to hold annual national exams for 16- and 18-year-olds will be made after consultations between the education secretary and qualifications bodies, said Johnson.

Shortly before Johnson’s announcement, the four chief medical officers of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland said the country had moved to the highest coronavirus level five.

That means the state-run National Health Service is at risk of being overwhelmed within 21 days if no action is taken.

Johnson said he hoped the restrictions could start to be lifted after the next school holidays in mid-February, and acknowledged the weeks ahead “will be the hardest yet”.

But he said he was encouraged by the roll-out of two Covid vaccines, including one developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, which could see the four most vulnerable groups inoculated in the next six weeks.

“With every jab that goes into our arms, we are tilting the odds against Covid and in favour of the British people,” he added.

England cancel Germany friendly after positive COVID-19 test

The England women’s football team have called off Tuesday’s friendly against Germany in Wiesbaden after a member of their backroom team tested positive for COVID-19.

“While we all wanted to play Tuesday’s game, this was absolutely the right course of action.

“I thank Germany’s staff for their understanding and our FA colleagues for their support,” England coach Phil Neville said in a statement.

The England side have not played a game since losing 1-0 to Spain at the SheBelieves Cup in March.

Chelsea’s Reece James sets unwanted England record

Chelsea youngster Reece James has become the first England player to be sent off on his starting debut as Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions again suffered issues with their discipline in the 1-0 Nations League loss to Denmark on Wednesday.

James was shown a red card after the final whistle for dissent against referee Jesus Gil Marzano, while Harry Maguire was also given his marching orders following a second yellow in the first half at Wembley.b

Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot shortly after Maguire’s sending off, as England dropped to third position in Nations League group A2 and face a battle to qualify for the competition’s finals.

Arsenal star Nketiah breaks all-time England U21 scoring record

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah is now the number one goalscorer of all time for the England Under-21 team.

The youngster did miss a penalty during his team’s 2-1 win over Turkey’s Under-21s in the European Championship qualifiers.

But he redeemed himself, netting his 14th goal at that level in the 88th minute, taking him past Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers.

Nketiah spared England’s blushes, after a very strong team was held for large portions of the game by the stubborn Turks, and will now play in the European Championship.

  • Nations League: England beat world’s top-ranked team Belgium

Nations League: England beat world’s top-ranked team Belgium

England came from behind to overcome the world’s top-ranked team Belgium and record an important Nations League victory at Wembley.

Belgium took a lead their early superiority deserved when Romelu Lukaku sent England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford the wrong way after the striker had been brought down by Eric Dier’s poor challenge.

England were on the back foot for most of the first half but were handed a lifeline back into the game six minutes before half-time when captain Jordan Henderson went down very easily in a tussle with Thomas Meunier, Marcus Rashford scoring from the spot.

Gareth Southgate’s side enjoyed much more possession after the break but needed a large slice of luck to take the lead after 64 minutes, Mason Mount’s effort deflecting off Toby Alderweireld and looping over keeper Simon Mignolet to inflict Belgium’s first loss since November 2018.
