What I’ve learned from past jobs – Rooney

New Plymouth boss Wayne Rooney has opened up about his past failures in management.

Rooney was sacked by Birmingham City midway through last season, with the club narrowly relegated at the end of the term.

Now the Manchester United and England legend hopes that he can strike the right chords next season.

“I had my playing career but you have to move on,” he said.

“I have put a lot of work and time in to try and better myself as a coach, I want to be a coach who helps players, academy players are really important. I was a player who came into the first team at 16, a lot are good enough but don’t get the chance.

“The clubs I’ve been at have all had challenges, administration with Derby, I went out to DC to experience something a little bit different, improve and develop, and I found my way here to Argyle and I feel I am the best shape I can be in.

“Since January I have had time to reflect on my previous job. Coming here last season with Birmingham, I was really impressed with the fans and the set-up so once this role way available I really wanted to explore it.”

Euro 2024: Rashford exluded as Southgate releases 33-man provisional list for England

Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford has been left out of the Three Lions of England squad to the Euro 2024.

England boss, Gareth Southgate released provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday with Rashford’s name conspicuously missing on the list.

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Chelsea skipper Reece James were among the other big names missing out on the list which will still  be trimmed to a maximum of 26 before the tournament in Germany begins later in June.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is rewarded for the Eagles’ brilliant end to the Premier League season with his first-ever call up.

Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones are the other uncapped players selected with Southgate short on defensive options.

England face Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 3 and Iceland four days later before jetting off for Germany, where they are one of the favourites to win the tournament.

The array of forwards available at Southgate’s disposal was responsible fpr he omission of Rashford.

This is the first time Rasford wouldn’t be selected for a major international tournament for the first time since the 2014 World Cup.

Rashford has scored just eight times in 42 appearances for his club this season and only recently returned from injury.

Henderson’s move to Ajax in January after a short spell in Saudi Arabia has not done enough to earn the 33-year-old a place.

The same goes for Jadon Sancho despite his renaissance on his return to Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund on loan from United.

Raheem Sterling and Kalvin Phillips were also overlooked despite shining for Southgate in the past at major tournaments.

I don’t know why fans boo me – Jack Grealish

Manchester City ace Jack Grealish says he doesn’t know why he’s booed by opposition fans.

Grealish admits he’s baffled why he’s signaled out by crowds across the country.

He said: “I always wondered why opposing fans booed me. My Mum often asks me about this. And I don’t know the reason. In every away match the stands whistle at me, but I don’t know why. I try to take it as a compliment.”

On City’s season run-in, Grealish also said: “I trained almost throughout the entire international break without days off. We have two matches against Real Madrid, games against Chelsea and Aston Villa. I hope I was able to help the team and coach.

  • England eye fifth Champions League spot as gap closes on Germany

England eye fifth Champions League spot as gap closes on Germany

Victories for West Ham United and Aston Villa in the Europa League and Conference League respectively could open the door for a fifth English club to qualify for next season’s revamped Champions League.

An expanded Champions League will feature 36 clubs rather than 32 in a re-structured group phase, meaning two extra places for Europe’s best-performing leagues in UEFA competitions.

Ahead of the week’s matches across the three competitions, Italy and Germany were placed first and second in UEFA’s coefficient table with England in third place.

However, West Ham overturned a 1-0 deficit against Bundesliga side Freiburg, hammering the Germans 5-0 to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

While Aston Villa beat Ajax Amsterdam to reach the quarter-finals of the Conference League.

England remain just behind Germany but have five teams left in Europe to the three of Germany and will be favourites to move ahead of them in UEFA’s table.

This means the team finishing fifth in the English Premier League will likely qualify for Champions League.

Usually only the top four qualify with the team in fifth spot playing in the Europa League.

Villa, who face seventh-placed West Ham on Sunday, are currently in fourth place although Tottenham Hotspur would move above them if they beat Fulham on Saturday.

Manchester United are in sixth place but are only six points behind Tottenham and despite a mediocre season could yet find a backdoor route in to the Champions League next season.

“I’m pleased if the country can get another Champions League opportunity.

“The Champions League is a great competition and brings in a lot more finances to the Premier League.

“I don’t know if it’ll be great that we’re the ones that have helped somebody else if it’s not us being fifth and I’m not totally sure about the coefficient situation overall,” West Ham manager, David Moyes, said on Friday.

Asked whether West Ham could finish fifth, Moyes said: “Probably not realistic that we can get fifth but we have to keep believing there’s an outside chance we can do it.”
