  • EPL: Leeds survive relegation battle as Burnley go down

EPL: Leeds survive relegation battle as Burnley go down

Leeds United survived relegation after claiming a dramatic added-time victory against nine-man Brentford to secure their Premier League survival.

Jack Harrison’s late strike from the edge of the penalty area sealed the win and in the end comfortably avoid the drop by three points.

But Sergi Canos looped in an equaliser two minutes before he was sent off for a second bookable offence.

With a two-man advantage, Leeds controlled the final stages, although it took Harrison’s goal to completely relieve the pressure, with goalkeeper Illan Meslier running the entire length of the field to join in the celebrations and manager Jesse Marsch flat on his back in the technical area as he was swept away by the euphoria.

It means Leeds become the first side since Wigan in 2011 to survive after starting the final day in the bottom three.

    Leeds escape on memorable day

Meanwhile Burnley lost to Newcastle by a solitary goal and booked a spot in the lower division of the English league.

The loss meant Burnley would join Norwich ,Watford in the English championship for season 2021.2022.

At the start of the day, Burnley were above Leeds on goal difference, but Jesse Marsch’s side won 2-1 at Brentford to end the Clarets’ six-year spell in the top flight.

  • We can be crowned champions-Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp

We can be crowned champions-Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp

German tactician and Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp has said that it is possible that his side could be crowned the Premier League winners on Sunday evening.

Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday night to reduce the gap between them and City to just one point heading to the final day.

Liverpool came from a goal down at St Mary’s after Nathan Redmon put the home side ahead, to win 2-1 with goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip.

The last game of the season sees the Reds hosting Wolves at Anfield whilst Aston Villa travels to the Etihad in what book makers have tagged clash of the titans.

Klopp insisted that City remain on course to win the Premier League title once again, but hopes there would be a surprise.

After the game against Southampton, Klopp was asked to rate his side’s title chances, and the German told BBC Sport: “Of course it is unlikely because City play at home against Aston Villa, who play only on Thursday.

“But it is football. I think the time when City became champion [in 2019] it was because of 11 millimetres.

“If someone wants us to be champion, then we have to win first and Aston Villa need to get a point at City.

“It is possible, not likely but possible. That is enough.”

  • EPL: Man City draw West Ham, Tottenham move into top four in crunchy Premier League games

EPL: Man City draw West Ham, Tottenham move into top four in crunchy Premier League games

Manchester City were trailing Westham by 2-0 in the first half of a thrilling encounter before launching a second half comeback to settle for a draw in the crunchy encounter.

Riyad Mahrez had a chance to win the game for City but his 83rd penalty miss ensured both team share the spoils.

Pep Guardiola’s side were in danger of gifting second placed Liverpool a title lifeline after West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen struck twice in the first half.

But City’s stirring recovery showed the character that has already brought them three titles in the last four seasons.

Jack Grealish got one back soon after the interval and Vladimir Coufal’s own goal completed City’s escape act.

The result meant that City are 4 points clear of second place Liverpool who have a game in hand against Southampton on Tuesday night.

While that was a bitter blow to Guardiola, who stood ashen-faced on the touchline, in the circumstances City will be relieved to have moved four points clear of Liverpool with a goal difference seven better than their rivals.

If Liverpool beat Southampton to close the gap to one point, Guardiola’s men can still clinch the trophy with a victory against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on May 22.

A title race for the ages could well go down to the last day of the season, when Liverpool host Wolves, as it did when City pipped the Reds to first place in 2019.

Guardiola said this week he wants players with a “special mentality” as he looks to bolster his squad for next season, personalities who, like him, wake up every day obsessed with winning.

Although West Ham had nothing to play for, they had already beaten Liverpool and Chelsea at home and this was no easy ride for City as David Moyes’ game-plan exposed the flaws in the leaders’ commitment to all-out attack.

Meanwhile Leeds United grabbed an away draw to keep their hopes of surviving relegation alive.

Time looked to be running out but a spirited second-half display was capped by a late Struijk header that lifted the roof off Elland Road as it takes Leeds out of the bottom three by one point at the expense of Burnley, who have a game in hand on their relegation rivals.

That clash comes on Thursday at Aston Villa while Leeds play Brentford on the final day and the Clarets face Newcastle.

Leeds almost made a dream start when Joe Gelhardt’s effort following a corner was inadvertently blocked on the goal-line by the face of his skipper Liam Cooper.

After that early chance, the visitors took over and the opening goal duly arrived, courtesy of more lightweight Leeds defending that has blighted their season.

Rodrigo, the club’s record signing, dithered in possession and Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma was left unchallenged as he came away with the ball.

Leeds still were well set to defend the attack but Welbeck out-paced and out-muscled the hapless Diego Llorente before dinking an excellent finish over Illan Meslier.

Raphinha snatched at a half-opening early in the second period and Jack Harrison blazed over.

Robert Sanchez produced a flying save to keep out Raphinha’s thumping drive from a free-kick and the Brazilian then turned Rodrigo’s arcing low cross just the wrong side of a post as Leeds gave Elland Road plenty to cheer.

However, with time running out, the home fans sensed it was not to be their day and a section turned on the club’s hierarchy.

A chorus of “sack the board” rang out as Welbeck missed a golden chance to seal victory for the Seagulls in the closing stages by heading Leandro Trossard’s cross wide.

But in the second minute of added time, Gelhardt evaded several challenges in Brighton’s box and crossed to the far post where Struijk rose to head home a vital equaliser.

Leeds have hope going into the final day.

However, at White Hart lane Harry Kane’s penalty goal moved Tottenham into the Premier League top four as Antonio Conte’s men struggled to defeat relegation battlers Burnley.

Spurs are now two points clear of Arsenal who have a date with Newcastle on Monday night to seek a return to top four.

Tottenham still need a slip up from the Gunners to return to the Champions League next season, but upped the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s men.

Burnley are only still in the fight for their place in the top flight thanks to a run of 10 points from a possible 12 in the first four games after sacking Sean Dyche.

Defeat at home to Aston Villa last weekend ended that unbeaten run, but there was plenty of encouragement for the Clarets they can do enough to survive in the final week of the season.

The draw against Liverpool took Tottenham to within a point of fourth-placed Arsenal, but their chance of a top-four finish now also rely on the Gunners dropping points in two of their final four games.

Twenty-one points separate the sides, but Spurs have made a habit of saving their best for the big occasion.

Antonio Conte’s men are unbeaten in all four meetings with City and Liverpool this season.

Liverpool are eyeing the quadruple and have a date with Chelsea on the 14th of May at Wembley in the FA Cup.

EPL: Liverpool, Man City in fight to finish as top four battle hots up

In a bid to claim the top spot and cement it ahead of the English Premier League ending in the 2021/2022 season, Manchester City and Liverpool have tricky away ties in week 34 of the EPL.

Manchester City go away to Leeds United at Elland road whilst challenger Liverpool go away to St James’ park to battle Newcastle.

Manchester City and Liverpool must quickly turn their focus from Champions League glory to the battle for the Premier League title, with no room for error in tricky away trips today .

City, who hold a one-point advantage at the top of the table with five games remaining, travel to Leeds, who are also in need of the points to guarantee survival.

Liverpool can go top for a few hours at least if they win at Newcastle, but the Magpies have won their last six home games to storm into the top half of the table since beginning of the takeover by Saudi Billionaires.
Recall that Last season, Leeds city defeated Manchester City at the Etihad by 1-2 with 10 men, Leeds City were trailing by a solitary goal but scored two after a player got a matching order in the feisty encounter.
Meanwhile, Leeds are unbeaten in five games, but are just five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a tough run-in, with Arsenal and Chelsea to come after the visit of City.

The Premier League’s top two remain on course to end their season with another showdown in the Champions League final after seeing off Spanish oppositions in contrasting fashion in midweek.

Meanwhile at Anfield Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp gave fans even more cause for celebration by extending his contract at the club for a further two years and the German tactician will remain at the club till 2026.

However, the German is far from happy at the scheduling of a lunchtime kick-off just three days after a Champions League semi-final.

“It’s brutal but it’s fine. It’s the best situation you can have,” said Klopp.“Just go for the next one and try to play the best football you can.”

In another development, the top four race appears a daunting task for Arsenal, Totteham and Manchester United with the fourth place finish looking like it’s going to be a direct shot between North London clubs Arsenal and Tottenham.

Arsenal have a two-point advantage and both sides will be confident of victory this weekend against oppositions with European semi-finals on their mind.

Arsenal have a date at London stadium with Westham who face a daunting task of upturning a 2-1 deficit at German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League Semi-finals.

Tottenham will slug it out with Leicester city at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium with the foxes looking well in shape to go past Roma in the semi-final of the Europa Conference League tie after first leg ended 1-1 at the King Power stadium.

However, Manchester United may feature in the Europa league come next season but they have a date with Brentford in a monday night football after playing a 1-1 draw on Thursday with Chelsea who appeared to have cemented its place as third on the EPL log.

The battle for title race hots up between Premier League leaders Manchester City and their relentless challengers Liverpool.

Manchester City are hoping to consolidate on their points 77 points and gain maximum points whilst Liverpool expect a slip from them so as to capitalize and overtake them.

In the battle for top four places, Arsenal can deliver a hammer blow to Manchester United’s hopes, while Chelsea can’t avoid another slip against West Ham.

    Pep Guardiola Vs Jurgen Klopp
Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City will have to hold off one of the best teams ever if they are to pip Liverpool to the title.

Guardiola’s side are one point clear of second-placed Liverpool after both teams won comfortably in midweek. In this weekend’s crunchy tie Manchester city play host to relegation battlers Watford whilst Liverpool host city rivals Everton at Anfield.

With six games left, it will likely take just one slip from either team to decide the enthralling race.

Guardiola has acknowledged City would have to win their remaining six games to be sure of winning the title ahead challenger Liverpool who are only adrift with just 1 point.

“Liverpool are one of the best sides in the whole of football history, we are facing one of the best teams ever,” Guardiola said this week.

“They have everything, that’s why being there with them means a lot. The players know it. They’ve faced them and they know.

“We don’t have any chance to drop anything, but we have been in this position and played with this pressure.”

Meanwhile Arsenal can increase Man Utd’s woes Manchester United’s decision to announce the long-awaited appointment of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as their new manager from next season came just two days after the Dutch coach was given a stark reminder of the massive task he faces at Old Trafford.
