Rooney rejects assistant coaching job at Man Utd, gives reasons

Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has rejected offers to work as assistant coach to newly employed coach Erik Ten Hag in next season’s campaign.

Rooney has said he would remain as chief coach of relegated Derby County

Recall that Erik Ten Hag was officially confirmed as the new Manchester United gaffer after the 4-0 drubbing of the club by Liverpool in the English Premier League (EPL)

He is expected to resume work at Old Trafford at the end of the season when he will take over from interim manager, Ralf Rangnick.

Erik Ten Hag in conjunction with officials in Manchester United are at the moment assembling the rest coaching staff.

The personnel who remained from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure are set to leave the club, with Ten Hag aiming to make a completely fresh start at the Theatre of Dreams.

Rooney, United former captain and all-time record goal scorer, was on the list of the candidates for a position in Ten Hag’s team.

However, Rooney has made it clear that he would only leave Derby county for the number 1 position at any club.

Rooney now looks set to remain in charge of the Rams for next season, although there speculations that Burnley has contacted him for the vacancy position left by the sacking of Sean Dyche

Meanwhile report has it that Ten Hag’s assistant at Ajax are being tipped to join him to resume work at Manchester United starting from next season’s campaign.

EPL: Burnley sacks coach Sean Dyche after 10 years in service

Premiership side Burnley football club have sacked manager Sean Dyche.

Dyche was employed Burnley manager in 2012 and he has taken them to two promotions from the second tier championship to the EPL.

Dyche still holds the record of the longest serving coach in the English Premier League after being appointed in 2012.

The 50-year-old leaves Burnley with the club in the relegation zone. They are 18th in the league, four points behind 17th-placed Everton with eight games left to play.

Mike Jackson Burnley’s U-23 coach has taken over from Dyche and will now oversee the affairs of the club from the Bench. He will be assisted by captain Ben Mee, academy director Paul Jenkins, and under-23s goalkeeping coach Connor King.

The club released a statement confirming the sack of Sean Dyche and assistant.

The statement reads in part: “Burnley Football Club can confirm the club has parted company with manager Sean Dyche, assistant manager Ian Woan, first-team coach Steve Stone and goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer.”

Burnley have only won four league games this season, drawing eight and losing 14 of their 30 matches.

Dyche, who had been due to speak to the media at 1.15pm BST on Friday, is the tenth Premier League manager to be sacked this season, following Xisco Munoz, Steve Bruce, Nuno Espirito Santo, Daniel Farke, Dean Smith, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rafa Benitez, Claudio Ranieri and Marcelo Bielsa.

chairman Alan Pace confirmed Sean Dyche’s departure from turf Moor.

He said: “Firstly, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sean and his staff for their achievements at the club over the last decade.

“During his time at Turf Moor, Sean has been a credit both on and off the pitch, respected by players, staff, supporters, and the wider football community.

“However, results this season have been disappointing and, while this was an incredibly difficult decision, with eight crucial games of the campaign remaining, we feel a change is needed to give the squad the best possible chance of retaining its Premier League status.

“The process of replacing Sean has begun and further announcements will be made to supporters in due course.” He said

  • How EPL clubs spent almost $400 million in January transfer window

How EPL clubs spent almost $400 million in January transfer window

A flurry of big-money moves before the transfer deadline at midnight Monday took spending by English Premier League (EPL) clubsides to the second-highest ever for a winter window.

The likes of Luis Diaz, Bruno Guimaraes and Rodrigo Bentancur in the last few days of January left the league’s gross spending at 295 million pounds (396 million dollars), according to estimates from finance company Deloitte.

It is only the fifth time the 200 million pounds mark has been breached, with January 2018’s 430 million pounds figure out on its own.

But this season’s figure is in line with the “best of the rest”.

The window two years ago accounted for 230 million pounds of spending, pipping 2011’s then-record 225 million pounds total, while 215 million pounds were spent in January 2017.

Dan Jones, head of Deloitte’s sports business group, said: “This transfer window indicates that the financial pressures of COVID-19 on Premier League clubs are easing, with spending firmly back to pre-pandemic levels and remarkably among the highest we’ve ever seen in January.

“The Premier League continues to lead the way globally, retaining its status as the world’s biggest domestic football league in financial terms, once again supported by full stadia and securing strong overseas broadcast deals.

“Other large European leagues are also edging back to higher spending, but it is Premier League clubs that have notched up the largest total spend in this transfer window, spending almost 150 million pounds more than Serie A clubs, the closest competitor.”

The initial 37.5 million pounds fee Liverpool reportedly paid for Diaz is the highest of the window.

It is narrowly ahead of Guimares’ 35 million pounds arrival at Newcastle United who also paid 25 million pounds for ex-Burnley striker Chris Wood.

Lucas Digne was another player to move for more than 20 million pounds, from Everton to Aston Villa.

Bentancur’s 19 million pounds move to Tottenham stood out as the highest of deadline day.

  • EPL: Man United draw 1-1 against West Brom

EPL: Man United draw 1-1 against West Brom

Manchester United have been held to a 1-1 draw away at West Brom in the English Premier League game played on Sunday.

Mbaye Diagne opened the scoring for the home side in the second minute of the game with a header beyond David Gea.

Bruno Fernandes equalised in the 44th minute for the visitors who couldn’t find a winner to keep their title hope alive.

United are now seven points behind Manchester City who still have a game in hand.

It has become apparent in recent weeks that United are extremely unlikely to get their hands on the title for the first time in eight years and another mediocre team performance wasn’t enough for United to claim three points against a team that will likely be playing Championship football next season.

United conceded after just 90 seconds when Mbaye Diagne headed beyond David de Gea after beating Victor Lindelof to the ball.

  • Tottenham go fourth with win at Sheffield United

Tottenham go fourth with win at Sheffield United

Tottenham Hotspur have moved back into the top four in the 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL), thanks to a 3-1 win at bottom side Sheffield United on Sunday.

Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele, with a stunning third goal secured victory for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Spurs are now level with third-placed Liverpool, though the champions can go top if they beat leaders Manchester United later Sunday.

Sheffield United remain bottom with just five points from 19 games, 11 points from safety at the halfway point in the season.

  • English premier League returns tomorrow

The Premier League returns on Wednesday after 100 days in the deep freeze, with Liverpool on the brink of winning the title in a radically changed football universe.

The English top flight follows Germany’s Bundesliga and La Liga in Spain in rebooting their seasons after the coronavirus lockdown, aiming to cram 92 games into six weeks of breathless action.

Aston Villa kick off against Sheffield United, to be followed later on Wednesday by Manchester City v Arsenal, before a cascade of matches.

Despite vocal complaints from some clubs and stars including Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, “Project Restart” has largely gone smoothly, with regular testing of players and staff yielding few positives.

But when Villa and Sheffield United kick off, the watching world will be confronted with a jarring spectacle, with an eerie silence in the usually noisy stands.

Piping crowd chants into stadiums, cardboard cut-outs of supporters and live video fan walls will add colour but it will be impossible to mimic the usual vibrant atmosphere.

In total, about 300 people will be allowed in stadiums for each match, with strict health protocols in place.

There will be widespread disinfection of changing facilities, dugouts, matchballs, goalposts, corner flags and substitution boards.

People other than players and coaching staff on team benches must wear face coverings.

The games themselves will look different.

Players have been told to maintain social-distancing during goal celebrations and encouraged not to spit.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits players will have to find motivation without the urgency provided by fans.

“The game is different,” he said in his pre-match press conference on Monday.

“The intensity drops a little bit. That urgency from the crowd doesn’t exist any more, how passionate the crowds are in England. We have to adapt.

“We have to experience it. We have to find ways to motivate our players as well in moments.”

But Aston Villa manager Dean Smith said his players were desperate to return, talking about the honour of playing the first game.

“The eyes of the world will be on us and we are looking forward to it,” he said.

“The players have been itching to get back.”

The hectic fixture list, warm summer temperatures and a lack of preparation time could lead to more injuries, so world governing body FIFA has given the green light for five substitutions per match.

  • English Premier League searches for new CEO

Susanna Dinnage, who was due to take charge as new chief executive of the Premier League in England, has changed her mind.

The league said in a statement on Sunday that she would not be replacing Richard Scudamore after all.

“In spite of her commitment to the Premier League in early November, Susanna Dinnage has now advised the Nominations Committee that she will not be taking up the position of Chief Executive,” read the statement.

“The Committee has reconvened its search and is talking to candidates. There will be no further comment until an appointment is made,” concluded the statement.

Executive chairman Scudamore will relinquish his duties at the end of 2018.

The Premier League has decided to split his role, with Dinnage lined up to take over as chief executive before her change of heart.

Dinnage is currently the global president for Animal Planet at media organisation Discovery Inc.

She has previously worked as president for Discovery Networks UK and Ireland.
