    EPL: Manchester City claim top spot after beating Leicester 1-0

    Man City have gone top of the English premier league abeit temporarily following their away win over Leicester City at the King Power stadium.

    Manchester City would have to wait for the result between Arsenal and Nottingham forest to know if they will be occupying the top spot at the end of the match day 14.

    City started the match pressing high and  dominated possession throughout the encounter.

    De Bruyne scored  via a freekick in the 49th minute and it proved to be the only goal of the game. Leicester were not attacking at all but they did it at the end of the second half in order to find an equalizer.

    Youri Tielemans was inches away from an immediate equalizer for Leicester when the Belgian’s ferocious drive was tipped onto the crossbar by Ederson.

    Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench and twice went close to a leveller with a snap-shot that whistled just wide and then a close-range effort straight at Ederson.

    City almost contrived to gift Leicester a point in stoppage-time when John Stones’ header hit Ruben Dias and flew narrowly wide.

    EPL: Awoniyi listed in Premier League team of the week

    Nottingham Forest forward, Taiwo Awoniyi has been named  in Alan Shearer’s   Premier League Team of the Week.

    Recall that Awoniyi scored the decisive goal as Forest defeated his former club, Liverpool 1-0 at the City Ground last Saturday.

    His goal proved to be the decider and his side’s second win of the season.

    Awoniyi gave a good account of himself in the encounter before he was substituted in the 75th minute.

    The 24-year-old has now scored three goals in nine league appearances call for the Reds this season.

    It’s the first time he will be named in the Team of the Week following his arrival at Nottingham Forest from Bundesliga club, Union Berlin this summer.

    EPL: Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi ranked premiership best ball passer

    Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi has been tagged the best passer of the ball in the English Premier League in this present season.

    This is evident on the official website, premierleague.com, which states the Everton Playmaker as the best of all this term.

    The Nigeria international is also the joint-second player with the most assists in the EPL (five), along with Manchester City’s Bernado Silva.

    Iwobi has really stepped up his game and has won man of the match for Everton on many occassions in the Premier League.

    Iwobi put up a master-class performance against Crystal Palace Saturday, as he sprinkled his creative passes, assisting two goals and spraying forward passes throughout the game in the Toffees’ 3-0 win.

    He had 53 touches, three key passes, 87 percent pass success rate, created two big chances, 13 final third passes, and two successful long balls. Defensively too, the former Arsenal man had a 100 per cent tackle success rate and four-ball recoveries to emerge as the Man-of-The-Match.

    The balance in midfield has allowed Iwobi to get forward more, and he’s started turning this into returns, with one goal and five assists in his last eight matches.

    The 26-year-old, who has made 476 passes this season, beat Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka (352), Gabriel Jesus (287) and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane (265) to the top spot.

    Other players in the Top 10 are Newcastle’s Joelinton (381), Fulham’s Bobby De Cordova-Reid (362), Brighton’s Leandro Trossard (333), Roberto Firmino (324), Ivan Toney (267), Jadon Sancho (285) and Demarai Gray (265).

    Iwobi has been tested in many positions at Everton and he has really impressed for Everton.

    Even when pressed by the opposition, he was able to break the press or remain calm in possession.

    Since the arrival of Frank Lampard, Iwobi is on the road to resurgence, even more so since the start of the 2022-23 season. Iwobi has never been a conventional winger; he has looked at home when playing as a central midfielder.

    Iwobi not only offers creativity but through his non-stop running, has been omnipresent in the middle of the park. The redefined role has given birth to a new version of Iwobi: composed, creative genius and the heartbeat of the team.

    Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has posited that his winning goal against Liverpool will remain indelible in his heart.

    Recall that Liverpool scouted Awoniyi and was with them for seven years and was loaned out six times with the period.

    Moreso, his failure to get a work permit hindered hom from getting a contract at Anfield.

    The 25-year-old Nigerian came back to haunt his former club by netting the only goal in the 1-0 win at the City Ground on Saturday afternoon.

    The forward made history as the first Nottingham Forest player to score in each of his first three Premier League starts at the City Ground.

    Awoniyi has three goals to his name in his debut season in the English Premier League.

    The Nottibgham number 9 said he’s happy scoring against his former club but the three points is far more important .

    He said “I am happy but the most important thing is three points. To score against Liverpool, I will never forget, “Awoniyi said after the game.

    “I will always be grateful to them for scouting me from Nigeria. It was amazing to score against them.’

    Luiz Jorginho’s dying minute goal wasn’t enough to secure three points  for Chelsea Football Club as Manchester United rallied back courtesy of new boy Casemiro who scored for Man United in the loss time of the encounter to share the spoils.

    Stuart Attwell wasted no time before pointing to  the spot as Armando Broja goes down inside the box under pressure from Scott McTominay in the 83rd minute.

    Jorginho was made a long time to wait to take the spot kick but sends David de Gea the wrong way and Stamford Bridge erupts.

    Man united exhibited a never give up spirit despite conceding a penalty goal late in the match when Anthony Elanga fizzes a dangerous ball across the face of goal as Manchester United mount pressure on the home side.

    Chelsea were so close to three points but Casemiro snatches a point for Manchester United right at the death to ensure that they share the spoils.

    Awoniyi shocks Liverpool in Nottingham’s second win of the season

    Bottom place Nottingham Forest shocked Liverpool to secure their second win of the season.

    Steve Cooper’s side approached the Liverpool game after experiencing a poor run of form in their first season in the English Premier League 22 years after going down.

    Liverpool missed a couple of chances in the first half with Fabio Carvalho wasting a glorious chance to put the Reds up.

    Few minutes later ,Virgil Van Dijk had another opportunity to aim at goal via a header but chose to pass to Firminio who was few seconds late to get to the pass.

    Upon resumption in the second half, Gomez was intercepted by the Nigerian striker Awoniyi and the English defender fouled him.

    It was Awoniyi again who latched on to a loose ball from a freekick to hit the post and the resultant rebound was converted by the Nigerian Striker to put   Steve Cooper’s side one goal up.

    The goal proved to be the decider as all effort for  Liverpool  to get an equalizer  proved abortive in the game.

    The loss is Liverpool’s third of the season and  could drop below top 10 at the end of match day 12.

    EPL: Guardiola apologises to Liverpool for fans unruly behavior

    Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola has tendered his unreserved apologies to Liverpool on behalf of City fans over uncomplimentary attitude in the game between both sides last weekend.

    Guardiola’s apology came following chants by his club’s fans referencing the Heysel and Hillsborough tragedies.

    The fans made the chants during their first defeat of the season which came through Klopp’s Reds at Anfield.

    After the game, Liverpool had expressed their disappointment over chants from City’s fans.

    But while fielding questions from Journalist on Friday, Guardiola apologized to Liverpool even though he said he did not hear the chants.

    Guardiola said, “I didn’t hear the chant. If it has happened I am so sorry. It does not represent who we are as a team or a club.”

    Guardiola added that he does not think the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester City has become toxic after it was reported that City’s bus was attacked at Anfield after the game.

    Mancity will hope to bounce back from last week’s defeatto Liverpool as they face Brighton today (Saturday) at the Etihad on matchday 12 in the 2022/23 English Premier League season

    EPL: Thierry Henry slams Rashford, says use your brains

    France and  Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, has slammed  Marcus Rashford’s technical abilities after the Manchester United forward missed a glorious chance during their 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

    The Red Devils claimed all three points, courtesy of a goal each in both halves from two Midfielders Fred and Bruno Fernades.

    However, United could have scored a third, after Rashford cut in from the left. But the England international could only fire straight at Hugo Lloris.

    Henry and former United fullback, Patrice Evra, analyzed the action after the game on Amazon Prime.

    Henry on Rashford: “You open the goal up. Just finish it. Place it, why hard? Side foot, goal. See you later.”

    Evra: “Not everyone has your brain Henry.”

    Henry: “I know but you have one, use it.”

    EPL: Mount’s double sinks Aston Villa, Man Utd draw Newcastle

    Chelsea continued their winning streak after pounding Steven Gerrard’s tutored Aston Villa by 2-0 at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.

    English Youngster, Mason mount latched on to a loose ball after a Villa defender failed to properly clear the ball in the box  to put Chelsea up as early as the 4th minute

    The home side created a lot of chances afterward but weren’t clinical enough to put the ball at the back of the net.

    Aston Villa had more chances, hit the crossbar, hit the post and saw Kepa Arrizabalaga made several fine saves.

    Mason Mount’s goal ensured the away side ran away with a first-half win.

    Upon resumption, both sides try to press and play a Highline football but it was Chelsea who got another goal in the 62nd minute via Mason Mount’s curling freekick.

    Meanwhile, at the Theatre of Dreams, Manchester United couldn’t break Newcastle’s defense as both sides settled for a goalless draw.

    Rashford bungled a few chances that could have made the difference in the game.

    Newcastle have jumped to 6th position with 15 points after playing in 10 games in the current season.

    They have won three, drew six, and only lost one game so far this season.

    Manchester United are occupying the 5th position with just 16 points from 10 games in the present campaign.

    EPL: Liverpool have been our greatest rival – Guardiola

    Despite Liverpool’s not-too-impressive form so far this season, Manchester City coach, Pep Guardiola has said that the Reds are still their greatest rival in the English Premier League.

    Guardiola posited that Liverpool has always challenged them for the title and can’t write them off now because of their form.

    “Liverpool always have been our biggest challengers and they will be now.

    “Being in the position that we are, with the World Cup, anything can happen,” Guardiola said.

    City have won four of the last five, while the Reds lifted the trophy during the pandemic in 2020.

    Manchester City have won the league with just one point over Liverpool on two occasions in the last five years with the latest one being last season.

    On Sunday however, the reigning champions meet the faltering challengers at Anfield.

    A 13-point chasm already separates the two powerhouses on the table.

    Liverpool host City with their unbeaten home record for 2022/2023 still intact. Klopp’s side have now gone 27 fixtures without suffering defeat on their turf.

    However, the Reds’ are plagued with injuries as some key players like  Arthur Melo, Luis Diaz, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are unavailable for selection due to injuries.

    However, Liverpool rekindled hopes after defeating  Rangers 7-1 on Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League match day 4 in Scotland.

    Kick-off between Liverpool and Manchester City is at 4: 30pm Nigerian time at Anfield.
