N1bn loan available for entrepreneurs at 9% interest -Finance Minister

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, says the Federal Government is offering businesses including manufacturers in the country credit facilities up to ₦1bn at a 9% interest rate.

The minister, who was a guest on a national Television program said the current administration recognises the challenge of entrepreneurs to access affordable funds for their businesses, hence the initiative.

He said small-scale entrepreneurs can get up to ₦1m in credit facility while larger businesses can access up to ₦1bn at 9% interest rate, which is cheaper than the current interest rate of 26.25 % recommended to commercial banks by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN),

Edun said, “The emphasis is on ramping up food production, the emphasis is on dealing with food nutrition and food insecurity.

“Likewise, the emphasis is on helping small-scale businesses through grants, and nano enterprises through grant funding. That is being rolled out and it’s being done in a manner which, as I said before, is a world-class standard where you identify biometrically the person that is the beneficiary and you pay them through a digital process which you can easily reconcile.

That is the emphasis, to make sure that we ramp up that speed and the scale of the help that is there even loans are 9% for medium scale enterprises, up to 1 million naira for the smaller enterprises and then for the larger enterprises up to 1 billion naira funding at 9% so that those manufacturing firms can invest grow the economy employ people produce more goods that will help to bring down inflation.”

He assured Nigerians that food prices would come down in the coming months.

The minister said though food insecurity is a worldwide phenomenon, the government has dedicated special funding for infrastructure to boost agricultural output.

He said, “Inflation, yes, it is high at 33.65%, food inflation at 40.5% is worrisomely high but the fact is that inflation is coming down, month-on-month. It is slowing and it is expected to reduce as we continue the dry season harvest and then we go into the wet season harvest. That is the place to focus on and a lot of emphasis is being placed on that to get agriculture output up, to get prices down, and that will be a nig factor in bringing down inflation.”

Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last weeks, as Nigerians battle the country’s current economic crisis sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.

  • Google earmarks $6m for female startups, entrepreneurs in Africa

Google earmarks $6m for female startups, entrepreneurs in Africa

Google on Monday said it has renewed its commitment to support startups in Africa with a combined six million dollars funding to startups founders and female entrepreneurs in Africa.

Nitin Gajria, Managing Director of Google Sub-Saharan Africa, said on Monday in statement that It was part of the ongoing plans to double down on supporting Black startup founders.

Gajra said that the programme, in collaboration with the Tony Elumelu foundation, would provide seed capital to 500 women entrepreneurs in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and selected Francophone countries.

He said it would prepare them to navigate their businesses through the start-up and early growth phase.

According to Gajra, as part of Google’s global commitment to support underserved communities, three million dollars was earmarked for Startups Black Founders Fund Africa.

‘’This fund, which is part of the company’s radical equity commitments announced in June 2020, will provide cash awards and hands-on support to 50 Black-led startups in Africa.

‘’Unlike most startup investments, it does not require founders to give up any equity in exchange for funding.

‘’Google will be working with the Co-Creation Hub, a Google for Startups partner and leading tech community hub with presence in Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda, to distribute the funding to the selected companies across Africa.

“We are to help black founders grow their businesses, not just through access to capital but also through access to the best of Google’s resources.

“We are dedicated to building a world where all women can thrive.

“A data collected by the World Bank in 10 African countries revealed that male-owned enterprises have six times more capital than female owned enterprises.

‘’This huge capital gap is not stopping the rise of female entrepreneurs, but it slows them down and makes their journeys that much more challenging.

‘’We hope that the support to the Tony Elumelu Foundation will help accelerate the growth of women techmakers and entrepreneurs in Africa,” Gajria said.

Bosun Tijani, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Co-Creation Hub, said it was encouraging to see Google’s continued dedication to strengthening and elevating the startup ecosystem in Africa.

Tijani said that Google was one of the early believers in tech entrepreneurs on the continent and its support over the last 10 years reflects a thoughtful commitment.

He said that the programme was extremely timely and would not only empower founders across the continent but also deepen the pipeline and unlock follow-on funding from both local and foreign investors.

According to him, Google understands that the growth and success of one player in the startup space lays the path for others.

Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, CEO at Tony Elumelu Foundation, said that as Africa’s leading philanthropy empowering young African entrepreneurs, the grant support would provide financial and technical support for additional women-owned businesses and marginalised groups in the informal sector.

She said that there was no better time to invest in women’s economic participation on the continent than now.

According to her, through this support, women will drive growth for local economies and enable better living conditions for their communities.

  • How entrepreneurs use technology to grow SMEs in Nigeria

How entrepreneurs use technology to grow SMEs in Nigeria

Entrepreneurs behind top small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria have revealed some of the technology tools they employ in growing their businesses in the country.

That SMEs are a driver of the Nigerian economy is no longer news, and the Nigerian government has really put in efforts in recent times to see that this sector of the economy is harnessed.

Entrepreneurs gathered at the Nigeria International Technology Exhibition and Conference (NITEC) 2017 all agree that technology drives businesses.

TheNewsGuru reports one of the best take aways from the NITEC 2017 event is that the challenges of global and local economies are not killing businesses; rather, the challenges are making businesses to define new objectives, applying tech solutions; and customers are now defining how they need to be served.

All SMEs are going online — exploiting the opportunity technology presents to grow the frontiers of business reach.

For SMEs to reach target markets, both offline and online, technology has been a massive advantage, that it has become huge part of businesses. Combining the offline potentials of a business with the online potentials, businesses get a bigger reach. With the growing number of Nigerians using the Internet, especially the social media, SMEs are presented with a bigger advantage with technology.

If a business is just offline-based, it would be limited to the offline reach of the business owner(s), but when it is online-based, the reach of the business is unlimited. Digital marketing tools are replete online and business partners as well, so, it is advisable to go online. For a business to be able to reach a wider population, for Nigerian businesses to go global, entrepreneurs have no option than to embrace technology and go online

Given the power of technology, companies are now designing how to better serve customers by using specialized tools.

    Mobile apps

Going online means a business will have a business domain (website) registered online, showcasing the products and services of the business. Taking it further, businesses are now moving away from just the website to actually developing mobile apps for the business. It works just as the website, but it is more efficient, and as the CEO of DressMeOutlet, Olatorera Oniru, puts it, “One of the most popular apps on my phone right now is Dressmeoutlet.com; we are constantly testing, and we are looking to launch this month our mobile app on iOS and Android”.

    Chat apps

Entrepreneurs understand the importance of keeping the conversation going with customers and clients alike. “We use WhatsApp quite a lot. We are having every of our customers’ phone numbers; so we engage them using WhatsApp,” Ms. Oniru said.

    Translators

SMEs also apply the power of translator apps to transact businesses. The entrepreneurs use the translator because the reach technology provide is unlimited, and calls can come from countries where language differ. “We have to be able to rapidly respond to orders and enquiries in languages other than the English language,” Oniru told TheNewsGuru.

    Google Analytics

Google Analytics tells you the traffic that is coming to your website and what percentage of that traffic is being converted into sales. The DressMeOutlet bosslady said, “We use this tool as well as other tools at our backend for us to know about our abandoned cart rates, as customers sometimes would rapidly check out and found out that, for instance, shipping is too expensively; so, they are gone! When we see our abandoned cart rates, we are able to call such customers to get feedback, and discuss how to make such customers come back to complete their purchase(s).

    LinkedIn

Nigerian entrepreneurs have embraced the power of LinkedIn to reach peculiars customers and clients alike. The entrepreneurs create their business profile page on LinkedIn, and personal profile page with staff profiles linked to the business page so that the clients and customers engaging them would know they are actually employed by the company.

    Payment apps

There is a company called Paystack. It’s a Nigerian payment platform. The good thing about Paystack is that, as an indigenous payments platform, you can actually make payments for business transactions outside of Nigeria.

    Uber

It would surprise you to know that entrepreneurs use Uber taxis to quickly reach their clients and customers, and they say this has been really productive.

    Facebook/Twitter

Entrepreneurs say they use the power of Facebook and Twitter to promote the reach of their businesses to friends, families and persons they haven’t even met before.

    More tools

Other tools used by Nigerian entrepreneurs are human resources tool, tams,Slack; financial accounting app, QuickBooks; Google Suite; Bitbucket Git; and Hootsuite.

Entrepreneurs actually combine all these solutions to growing the reach of their businesses, thereby breaking the barriers of doing business in Nigeria.

NITEC 2017 focused heavily on the future of big data, analytics and applications for SMEs development. It went a long way to show businesses must be able to maximize the power of cloud computing, as given the explosion of technology, big data now demands businesses use cloud computing and analytics to provide cognitive solutions to business problems.

These are some of the solutions technology provides for SMEs in Nigeria. If you think anything is missing on this list, please leave a comment below after seeing this video.
